@alh-harem maybe u hav not been to Anambra b4.try and come nd see for urself, jigawa state is ok, but their problem is there high level of illitracy, is killing them there

asha 80:

you do not know anambra state for the bolded reasons

I have lived in anambra for some year, infact nnewi north but i do not intend to say the street.

There are non- indigenes in anambra but when compared to other states, it is not much

It seems Nigerians (save for the south easterners) are not good travellers as it would seem they don't know much about other states save for the one they are resident upon.

It is evident from the misinformed comments of some nlers on some states like Anambra.

Wrong very wrong, everyone in the country migrate to different city, I know anambra

the are high level of northerners and yorubas there but compare it to other states i mentioned then,,.,.,.

For those flaunting the prominent indigenes of Anambra as a basis for determining Anambra, why then are they putting Lagos and Rivers ahead of their Anambra, because neither of these states has produced as much as Anambra has produced? But they wont, because it will be most laughable to put any state ahead of Lagos in terms of popularity! But after settling those 2 indisputable, they now redefine popularity to mean 'no of prominent people' and smuggled in Anambra, and by their fraudulent manipulation, they left out Ogun which clearly ranks higher than, or for avoidance of argument, compares with Anambra in no of eminent personalities.

Some other people even used popularity to mean population, and still rank Anambra ahead of Kano and Kaduna!

It appears some guys are just giving different meanings to popularity to smuggle in their state. And fyi, I'm not from any of those states, I'm from Kwara.

Anambra is popular, no doubt, but any reasonable definition of Top 5 Most Popular States in Nigeria, it can't make Top 5.
Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by olawalebabs(m): 7:50pm On Oct 10, 2011
Some people don't even know what this thread is all about. One clear fact is that Anambra is not among the top 5 state in Nigeria. If it's because of the personalities it has produce, Ogun and Katsina also does, and their population far exceed that of anambra.
Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by chy101: 7:53pm On Oct 10, 2011
You have to understand the indices of development employed to determine popularity in this sense. If we are talking about states with most prominent and distinguished citizens Anambra comes first in mind. Then if we bring in other factors like economy, then Lagos 1st and Rivers comes 2nd positions followed by Anambra on the 3rd position. One of the major parameters for measuring economy of any state is bank concentration; you will notice that Lagos comes first with the highest number of banks followed by Rivers and 3rd largest concentration of banks is Anambra (check bank locator machines). Again Anambra has been rated the least poverty state. So marshal out any parameter and indices of development, it will always tilt the way of Anambra
Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by Onlytruth(m): 7:54pm On Oct 10, 2011
I laugh when I see folks trying to piggyback on the regional influence of Lagos to claim popularity ahead of Anambra.
Minus Lagos (which a lot of folks still mistake for a state in SW), I don't see any SW state more popular than Anambra state.
What informs my position?
Well, by popularity I mean places that people go to for one thing or the other; eg business.
Since people don't do much of tourism tour in Nigeria (due to crime and lack of electricity), I have to stick to business migration; 'cos folks would do business no matter what (it is a survival thing  undecided).
I know that Onitsha and Nnewi attract more business people from Nigeria and Africa than any SW cities (minus Lagos of course). If you are from outside Nigeria, and you mention cities to non-Nigerians, chances are that they would recognize Onitsha and Nnewi more, (because of business).

The ONE thing that masks this fact is that Igbos are not into noticing, harassing or brooding over non-igbo in their midst.
Most are busy hustling and don't care whether the next guy is from Mars.
Okada riders in Nnewi these days don't even speak Igbo, and I HATE THAT. angry

So, my take is that apart from Lagos, and maybe Kano (city, not the state), there is no other state more popular than Anambra.  QUOTE ME ON THAT.  cool

You need to go there and look properly.

I even think that Kano is so because it has an international airport. BIG DEAL.
If Anambra has any such airport, then, no other state would even come close.
Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by chy101: 8:00pm On Oct 10, 2011
Anambra will soon have its airport, Anambra International Cargo Airport (presently under construction)

no comment, top 3 state without an airport. Hmm, what comes to mind when anambra is mention is onithsa, nnewi (not as the former), chris uba governor kidnap saga, okija shrine. I think these factors make the state more popular than any other factors. @onlytruth. Are you saying lagos is not part of SW or what?

I am saying it is not your typical south west state because it used to be a federal capital territory. I was only saying that other SW states shouldn't piggyback on Lagos to claim more popularity, because in all the years I've been travelling from Onitsha to Lagos, I've never gone beyond Lagos. My only other visit to areas outside Lagos was during my youth service which was in Ijebu (Ago Iwoye). I've never gone back there ever since.

Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by PhysicsQED(m): 8:32pm On Oct 10, 2011
The cities in Nigeria are far more well known than the names of the states, in most cases, and that's understandable, given that the names of the states for many places only gained any national prominence two or three decades ago.

To those who aren't that geographically informed, I bet the name of the city of Calabar would be known much more widely than the state that it's in; same with Jos and most other major cities.

Yes I know that, but Lagos (thanks to what some would call conspiracy) keeps holding firm to some of the most important national institutions. I'll give some examples.
All the professional medical and other associations still have their headquarters in Lagos. WHY?
One of my relation wanted to obtain his license in order to practice his profession. He had to travel all the way to Lagos to do that. He had all his education and Youth service in Anambra, but had to travel to Lagos (for the first time in his life) to do this. Why couldn't he do it in Awka or Enugu?
The same applies to most professions I know.
But, I believe that all these would be redressed soon, 'cos it makes no sense at all.

Lagos is still the de facto federal capital in many ways.
Calabar never enjoyed such protracted privilege.

Every Nigerian knows about it. The only thing I have to say (as a typical Igbo man) is that it is not anyone's fault.
There is nothing that cannot be reversed.
It makes no sense to have all the most important national registration councils in Lagos alone.
We solved the Nigerian law school issue by spreading it out.
The same should apply to other such institutes.

Seriously speaking, I don't regard Lagos as a southwestern state just the same way I wouldn't regard Abuja as a northcentral state
Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by dayokanu(m): 9:39pm On Oct 10, 2011
And thankfully its not about what you regard rather about what it is.

I can as well say I dont regard Edo as a SS state because they have more similarity and share ancestry to Yorubas than to ppl from Cross River, Akwa Ibom RIvers etc.

Same with Kwara.

Edo desite sharing a similar culture to Yorubas is still NOT a SW state and Kwara is still not a SW state

If only you know.

I know ppl from my town travel more than anyone in this country per capita.

Check the number of Ogbomoso ppl all over the North and even in places as far as Ghana

Check the number of Ejigbo ppl in Cote D Ivore which is called Abidjan by Yorubas

haha dayo i know ogbomosho guys are the most travelled yorubas in nigeria.but anyone else?abeg o na lie.nnewi people travel more.proof?85% of igbos that control spare parts business in nigeria are from nnewi.go to spare parts outlets in west africa(let us not even talk about nigeria).up tp 60 percent of those are nnewi guys.
Re: Which State Is Least Known In Nigeria? Jigawa? by dayokanu(m): 10:01pm On Oct 10, 2011
When I said per capita that means you cant compare figure for figure

If we have 40m Igbos and 15m outside Igboland and you have 2m Ogbomoso ppl with 1m outside that means we have more Ogbomoso ppl per capita outside.

Evidence. Go to any Northern City and see the number of recent Ogbomoso migrants. especially in places like Jos, Minna, Kano and Kaduna

Who would be in Jos and not know about Ogbomoso ppl, Also you know a lot of tem have blended with the local population.

A lot of prominent Northeners are actually Ogbomosho ppl. e.g Some of these NFA ppl either Sani Toro or Amos Adamu (Not sure) one of them is Ogbomoso claiming North.

While serving in the North I saw many of them who have changed names e.d An Abraham Sunday, Dorcas Emmanuel etc

Then also in Ghana, I think the current King was actually brought from outside Ogbomoso

As traders, Yoruba in Ghana contributed to the spread of Islam and Christianity.4 Migrants from Ogbomoso town in particular established branches of Baptist Church in both the rural and urban areas of Ghana. By 1948, they had formed Baptist associations reporting to the Baptist Convention until 1964 when they formed their own Ghana Convention.5 In the 1940s equally, Muslim traders from Ogbomoso established Nurudeen Society for the spread of Islam in Ghana. They established Mosques in Tamale, Accra, Secondi, Suhum, Koforidua, Tarkwa, Tema, Kumasi and others.

ok i understand.but if i may ask how come ogbomosho people are like that unlike other yoruba groups?i can testify to this because most yorubas i have met in the north say they came from ogbomosho

also is segun odegbami from ogbomosho because i know he was born and brought up in jos.

Dapo I really cant say, I think they go for business etc.

Also I think Ijesha ppl travel too. But the Ogbomosho one is almost an epidemic It was really an issue around 1993 during the June 12 crisis when different ppl were coming back to Ogbomoso looking for their family house and the only description they has was that there was a tree in front of it. Obviously it was their parents generation tha travelled and they relied on mouth to mouth news

Jigawa state came into being after the old kano state was divided on Tuesday 27th August 1991 by the then military junta of IBB.
The capital is sited in a rocky town called Dutse. Dutse is a Hausa word which means rock.
The state has 27 LGAs shared by the 5 emirates. The 2 largest emirates, Dutse and Hadejia, represent a senatorial zone. While the remaining 3 smaller emirates, Gumel, Kazaure and Ringim are merged into one senatorial district.
Inter-emirate rivalry is common and this seriously militates against the development of the state.
This writer is from Gumel town, where the state NYSC orientation camp is located.
The present governor is Alhaji Sule Lamido, a statesman with vast political experience and socialist leanings.
The deputy governor is Alhaji Ahmed Mahmud Gumel, a patient, humble and loyal politician.

DK: Why do Ogbomosho people travel so much?

I suggest that it is because of the expansionist tendencies of the Old Oyo empire. The Oyo were basically expanding their territorial and military spheres of influence. Ogbomosho obviously could not match this, but they excelled at trade on the back of the Oyo Empire's military conquests. It has now become a strong part of the Ogbomosho people's DNA to travel and trade.

Over 90% of the citizens are Hausa-Fulani and practicing Muslims. Though there are very few indigenous Kanuri tribe and Christian communities, who enjoyed freedom to practice their faith freely.
Farming is the largest source of employment, as subsistence and commercial farming are practiced both during the rainy and dry seasons. Fishing and animal rearing are also prevalent.
