Yoruba started Nollywood yet, most Yoruba actors and actresses didn't break through the English version of Nollywood from baba suwe to Mr latin down to Femi adebayo.

The Igbos gave Nollywood life and since Yoruba actors and actresses couldn't break through the English version of Nollywood probably because there english sucks, Dem kuku create Nollywood Yoruba to console themselves.

Igbos hold this Nigeria intact.
From crude oil and gas deposits in Igbo land and rest of the Niger Delta to anything that keeps Nigeria alive - all are related to the Igbo.

Others outside the old Eastern region clutch tight to one Nigeria because of proceeds from crude oil and gas deposits.

Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani hardly go to settle outside their enclaves.

Some people actually think that Nollywood started with 'Living In Bondage ' and 'Domitila'. Smh.

Aisha is even schooling them for free when they should be paying to recieve this kind of knowledge.

Everything about entertainment in Africa, from the first TV station to the first stadium etc, has its root in Ibadan, the heart of Yorubaland through the vision of our forebears. Thank you Aisha for the free education you are giving them.

Entertainment business is total package and it's bringing in billions into Nigeria through the Nigerian music, sports and film industry pioneered by the Yoruba and still owned by the Yoruba.

The chart bursting Nollywood films are produced in Yoruba but subtitled in English, Asake sings in Yoruba, all the Nigerian music Stars that performed at his UK show, including Tunde Baiyewu of Light House, are Nigerians and Yoruba with link to Nollywood. Most of those sound tracks in Yoruba films come from these Yoruba global Musicians.

Even Gospel musicians like Tope Alabi are connected to Nollywood while World Boxing Champion Anthony Joshua, World Athletics record-holder Tobi Amusan, along with Odunlade Adekola, Olamide, Teni and others are Glo Ambassadors, Iya Rainbow, Lateef Adedimeji, Dele Odule from Nollywood as Airtel Ambassadors, with their faces all over local and international Nigerian entertainment contents sponsorship.

Yoruba started Nollywood when the rest of Nigeria and Africa had not even seen or watched a TV in their lives and the Yoruba still own Nollywood till date.

The Yoruba can teach others in Nigeria and Africa how they sustain this global feat and dominance of entertainment if others are humble enough to learn from the Yoruba. We are all Nigerians/Africans and we can learn from one another.

you are very ignorant to say this non sense every region had its own version of indegenous language films, from way back, foolishness is when you compare traditional Yoruba movies to mainstream Nollywood, when we talk about mainstream Nollywood only ignorant people will say Yoruba started it, na craze be dat, everyone contributed to the growth of Nollywood even those from the south east were even more of pioneers, the Nollywood that travelled across Africa and the Caribbean, was not your Yoruba indegenous Nollywood.

The first film produced on video in Nigeria is 1988's Soso Meji, produced by Ade Ajiboye. Subsequently, Alade Aromire produced Ekun (1989) on video.[4] However, the boom experienced in this era is generally believed to have been kick started by Kenneth Nnebue's Living in Bondage (1992). Do you know why? When it comes to business or to make something boom....you know the tribe to contact and remember is not how far but how well. Learn to remove tribalism from everything

That Yoruba own nollywood is pure academic. Igbos own Nollywood and Nigeria movie industry and have even taken it to Ghana.

It's like Africa claiming jazz in America today. Stupid, inferior idiots everywhere.

Nigerian movies suck. They should lift their standards and get away from lazy storylines and cheap plots

Look at businesses too tell me how many Yoruba's dey in the same category with the Igbo's. She is right youruba is the pioneer of nollywood.

When you start a business but limited it to a tiny patronage, then others took the business to global patronage, why come to the media to gloat on your starting the business but not praise those who took the business to global patronage?

The same Nollywood they were crying out for Igbo domination is the one they claiming they started. When Nollywood was at its infancy they were mocking Igbo, calling it alaba production. As soon as it got better all of them wanted to reap where they didn't show. Envy and lies(propaganda)are they trade marks

Reap where we did not sow, how?

We actually started it and commercialized it. That’s fact. So how are we reaping where we didn’t sow

First is a top Yoruba actor and second are not even the most popular in Nollywood

Before I start the main point, I would like to say that the Late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo started the first television in Nigeria specifically the Western regional television in Ibadan.

I ones read an interview in which Chief Edwin Clarke confronted Chief Awolowo for not extending television to the Midwestern region but Chief Awolowo told him that Midwestern region did not generate revenue for his government so he can not extend television to the Midwestern region.

That is just by the way side.

The Yoruba actress is correct in saying that the Yoruba started Nollywood in Nigeria.

She is actually saying the facts.

I quite agree with her. She is stating the facts.

But at some point in time after the death of Chief Hubert Ogunde the Yoruba movie started falling in popularity and cinema operators were folding because of low patronage.

She also mentioned this point during her interview.

I would like to state here that there are three era as far as the film industry is concerned in Nigeria.

1.CINEMA HOUSE ERA
2.VIDEO CASSETTE ERA
3. DSTV DECODER ERA

CINEMA HOUSE ERA 1973

The Yoruba started the movie industry in Nigeria when there was Cinema Houses in Nigeria.

There was no Video Cassette Player VCR.

Hubert Ogunde movie were shown in cinema houses in Lagos, Ibadan etc

VIDEO CASSETTE ERA

The Igbo movie became a brand from the video cassette era.

This was during the 1990s

As video cassette player became popular Igbo movie took off from there.

Before the video cassette era the likes of Pete Edochie a veteran Nollywood actor were airing "Things Fall Apart" through the NTA ( Nigeria Television Authority)

SATELLITE TELEVISION ERA (DSTV DECODER ERA )
This is the era of satellites television.

It comes with monthly paid subscription.

The movie industry in Nigeria is at this stage.

Very baseless and unnecessary argument at this age and time!
Who cares where Nollywood started from?

Despite having multiple tribes in India, when have you seen an indian actor or actress boasting that Bollywood came from a certain tribe in the country?

India just recently become the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the south pole of the moon and no one is searching for the tribes of the Indians who made it possible but here in Nigeria,we are hilariously looking for the tribe that started one thing or the other to brag!

Other countries are concentrating more on innovations and how to make life better their citizens while one tribal big.ot from the acclaimed 'giant of africa' is shamelessly echoing which tribe started Nollywood!

Chai....

Its not about their English, its about the politics involved. Infact, some of the igbo actors English are terrible. Most of the yoruba guys with good English hid their yoruba names to break into the industry e.g Desmond Olusola Elliott .

The marketers in alaba n aba are igbos, they call the shot with their money and demand for igbo actors

NL really full of kids, actually no tribe or region can boast of owing nollywood.because Nollywood is actually a name or category of film being make in Nigeria,by Nigeria and maybe for Nigerians.
Some of you are mentioning some movies, have you asked yourself the question that who is the producer of that film, the narrator,or the director of that film . A lot of film being categories as Yoruba might even be produce by an Igbo producer or director same way, some film being categories as igbo are being produced by a Yoruba producer or director.so what are we saying?,
The 3 regions, Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba have different intentions in making movies that is why they are not on same level .
Generally, igbo do commercialized any movies they make with the sole aim of making money and maybe fame.so they put in all things to make it look appealing to sight..that is why before the Advent of Internet in Nigeria wide space, any movies that has not been marketed at either Alaba, idumota or Aba where the real movies marketer are such film will make no return money wise also such movie might not be reckon or popular.
Yorubas actually make film for entertainment, not the money aspect of it.it is actually few decade ago they started monetizing their film .so if you make or invented something and that thing is not known to anyone,is just as you have not invented anything..so yoruba can't really lay claim they own Nollywood .so as igbo too can't lay claim they own it too.
I must be straight forward without baise, yoruba are really trying to break through into international scene.the story of who own or started Nollywood is not what they needed right now.
Hausa are actually good in film making too,but the religion restrictions is actually killing a lot of their talent, so also Hausa too can't lay claim they own Nollywood even though they have actually coined their fate in kannywood, film like AMINA are film that really portrail Africa culture and beauty.
Some of you are talking about music, artist is actually not the reason you are hearing that song but the promoters.so if a Yoruba artist should sing a song, and the song is being sponsors and promoted by Igbo man who sole aim is to make his cool profit,so u will be in your room be shouting or claiming yoruba own the music industry. Have you guys asked yourself why some artist DNT get popular again after sometimes ,do you guys think maybe because they cant sing again or they are tired of singing no, their promoters might have dropped them for another person. I think the questions you guys should ask is
Who are the movies sporsonrer and promoters, cause they are the one that determines how far any acting will go .
