The Federal Government through the Association of Power Generation Companies has grown the power capacity of the national grid from 13, 000megawatts recorded a few years ago to about 14,000 MW.

APGC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Joy Ogaji, while speaking with The PUNCH on the sideline of the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria’s 2023 annual international strategic conference last week Thursday, said electricity generation capacity to the national grid has increased to almost 14,000MW.

Dr Ogaji explained that the increase was brought about due to the addition of a $1.3bn Niger state-based 700MW Zungeru hydroelectric plant which came on stream in the second quarter of the year.

“The national grid now has an installed power generation capacity of about 14,000 megawatts, and this was made possible due to the Zungeru plant that came on stream this year,” she said, adding that it was an opportunity for interested investors to partner with the Gencos.

The Federal Government had in February, announced Mainstream Energy Solution Limited as the preferred bidder for the concession of the plant. The company had offered a fee of $700m per year for a period of 30 years to operate the plant.

Despite the 14,000MW claim by Ojagi, checks by The PUNCH on the records of the Nigerian Electricity System Operator showed that the latest on-grid peak power generation as of Saturday, was 4,803.60 MW.

Experts have said Nigeria needs at least 30,000MW to reach sufficiency.

Lies, deceit & propaganda has destroyed the country. Since Nigeria now generates 14,000mega Watts of electricity, why is there blackout all over the nation.

Dont come & say the infrastructures for the transmission & distribution of the 14,000 mega Watts are non existent. Are they just knowiing that If they are not available, what is the sense of coming out tö lie that 14,000mMW has been added to the National Grid For what purpose are the lies when Nigerians gain nothing from lies & propaganda

Not long ago the grid fell below 2000megawatts.

Why do this emilokan mandate thieves always blow the trumpet of lies & deceit. A curse upon APC

What's the point of having a generation capacity of 14,000MW when we can only transmit 4500 max

Why 8 years of APC yet they haven't improved our transmission capacity at all

And yet there's no light. In Buhari's administration at least we use to njoy 7-10 hr power supply daily but ever since Tinubu came in if u see 2 hrs light in a day just thank God. I almost believed Tinubu will be better than Buhari but i've lost every belief i had. True true dirty channel no fit produce clean water. My dad kept saying this from the onset.

Distribution is the issue..

One funny thing about this kwan3 is if you're living in an area that enjoy certain privileges, you won't experience certain things.
In where I was leaving before, we barely had light for 5hrs in a day. Whenever there's a grid collapse, we can stay for days without light with the excuse that the grid has collapsed.

Where I am now, we usually have light for like 15-18hrs in a day.

The last time the grid collapsed, we had light almost the whole day. I was even surprised when I saw the news on nairaland. This country ehn.

Same country, different rules...

By the way, where's El-rufai?

Beyond the dogon turanci, the taste of the pudding is in the eating.

This 14k mw will make sense when I have light 25 hrs a day.

Work on paper, nothing to show for it

Just the way our unemployment rate miraculously jumped from 30 something percent to 4 point something percent with nothing to show for it

So what is the need of making this info public when actual power generation is no where close?
Note: Actual power being distributed has not been factored in.
