The major reason why people marry is for procreation purpose.
The man fences the woman with certain ceremony and legal proceedings to ensure that the children that come out of her are faithfully his and not a product of extra-marital affair.
Marriage is like coming together in love and understanding to raise a family. That way, there is continuity in the family line.
