agabusta:Not anymore. Before APC came, the annual salary of the civil servant at that grade level could buy a clean tokunbo car(not brand new like before). With the way things are currently, the annual salary of the same civil servant at that grade level can’t buy Nigerian used tokunbo. So sad. |

Stupid analysis. 1975, a brand new car in the U.S was $300 - $700, today you need to have $50,000 for a brand new car. A 3 bedroom home in cali in the 80s was around $47,000, today, you need to gave around $1.4million to buy same house. Inflation is a global phenomenon, not just a Nigerian thing. Secondly, technology has an influence over inflation. Back then, these cars were simple and skeletal, today, cars come with electric windows, hybrids, GPS, touch screen infotainment, heater seats, more advanced engines, etc. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Keep on blaming Obi while tinubu keep on messing up the country. After praising tinubu you'll come out to blame PO. what a shame!!! Why didn't atiku step down for PO? is it's wise to you for a northerner to take over from another northerner? Make use of your brain if it's working and stop all these tribal sentiments. jazzman7711:Image the kind of dull comment u just comment. See the kind of low thinking wey most of u guys get for Nigeria, no wonder Nigeria nor fit pass where e dey so. You are saying nonsense and still comfortably telling someone who said the right thing to apologise for spreading wrong information, whereas u are the one saying nonsense First of all, the other dull guy was the one who said minimum wage was 80 naira in 1975 and not the person u quoted. Secondly even if minimum was 60 naira then, at least 3yrs salary can get u the Nigeria made Peugeot u claimed and u will still have enough money remaining on u. But can 10yrs current minimum wage salary get u the 7 million Innoson vehicle u are calming now? U guys should stop all this propaganda at least for once and join in fighting for a better Nigeria. |

How many people have such cars in 1975? What was the population of people that could buy this sort of car then?🤷🏾🤷🏿♀️🤦🏿♂️ As poor as the country is right now up to 50m will buy #1500 bread. Can 50m people of that generation buy the Peugeot cars? If the car was easy to buy then almost everybody in Nigeria would own it in 1975. The value of #1500 right now and then isn't the same and the work you would do to earn that #1500 is not even the same with now. In 1975, General Yakubu Gowan was the head of the state, the man who claimed that Nigeria had so much money but couldn’t think of what to do with it, hence, failed to develop the country and built factories and industries, above all , electricity but mass looting. 1 Naira = $3.00 so #1700 was $5,100. This is equivalent to $29,417.52 today. $1 today is #1700 today so a loaf of bread is about $1. How much was a loaf of bread in the USA & U.K. in 1975? In 1975 in the U.S. price for a loaf of bread was as low as $0.14 (14 cents) and a loaf of bread cost just 11p in the U.K. So things are always more expensive in Nigeria because we imported everything to make breads such as flour, sugar, yeast, etc. 😭 In 1975, minimum wage was like 80 naira a month, so that Peugeot you are looking at was beyond the reach of average Nigerians. Back then things were hard, and food was costly, especially meat. Back then we ate one or two small pieces of meat with the rice. Nothing like ‘assorted’ back then.🙉🙈🙊 The average income in Nigeria in 1975 was #80 about $240 equivalent to about $1,961.17 today. Please do the Arithmetic/Maths!!! Nigeria problems started long time ago for lack of planning so don’t blame the present President. 😡🥵 May God guide and give wisdom to our PABAT in all his efforts to make Nigeria great .🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🇳🇬 |

iukpe:Thanks for the R.T. Briscoe memories and more. It resonated with me. The Peugeot 504 couldn't have been sold for the N1500 amount the OP quoted on this thread as of 1975. You also clearly indicated that your mother's brand new Peugeot 404 pickup was N4000 as of the late 1970s. I've been wondering how people just shamelessly lift up half-truths and relentlessly spread them online without fact-checking with credible sources. Indeed, I remember full well that R.T. Briscoe and J. Allen were the dealerships or places to go to if you wanted to purchase brand new cars back in the 1970s and beyond. My father too had a Lada saloon car in the early 1970s, and a red Volvo from R.T. Briscoe in the late 1970s. He later got a brand new German-made caramel-brown Opel (the Opel somersaulted due to a bad tyre pressure at a bad expressway section in Kontangora when my dad and his younger brother where traveling in it from Lagos to Kano in 1978 but they both survived with injuries due to the seatbelts they wore), a brand new Russian-made Moskvich for his company use, and a brand new Volkswagen Igala for my mum (all in the late 1970s). The cheapest cars in Nigeria we're majorly the Japanese car brands in the 1970s oil boom era through to the 1980s. You could get brand new cars if you were credit-worthy by making down payments in the 1970s right into the 1980s. P.S. @sukkot, @naptu2, How's it going? Can we get some fact-checks from you to know if the OP of this thread is right about a 1975 Peugeot costing N1500. I CANNOT recollect that 504 car costing as low as N1500 when VW Beetles and Peugeot 404s went for N4000 in the late 1970s. At least some of us the OGs here on NL can confirm with clarity some specifics from the 1970s and 1980s. Thanks. 1 Like 2 Shares |

Patrioticman001: What's the population of Nigeria back then in 1975,the percentage of Nigerians who can afford the car then,is much more than the percentage of people who can afford it now. Then back in those days our parents were working with strength and they got good salary for it. Not now when we have our leaders as thieves only. My father's salary then can buy a bag of rice, pay nitel and nepa bill, provide for the house needs and feed us full but nowadays can 35k minimum wage buy half bag of rice? 1 Like |
