It is a bubble.

Weather is horrible, houses are small.
Mindset of the citizenry is small.
It is a has-been Nation.
I think there is more to life than 'just being comfortable'

I can earn more in Canada doing the same job.
...and one thing I know about Canada is the houses are not tiny.
🤣

Australia is good.
Weather is fantastic.
Just far from Naija (and the rest of the world).

America would have been the best...
God's own Country.
But I will have to start writing exams again and all.

In the end I want to contribute my quota to Naija sha.
God has already blessed me small.

The funny thing is that the reasons here if slightly modified is the reason why I LOVE THE UK

This country has not been infected by rapacious capitalism and consumerism YET.

We ship major foodstuff from naija twice a year, so spending is minimal. Wifey is confirm hussler and super saver too, this helps also. You save more when you work as a team.

Subtract tax and cost of living. Then the cost of earning that money

That is after tax. Good enough the taxes were refunded after filing because we did not earn up to a certain threshold.

on point

I always tell my people how Nigeria has helped so many of us from poor home. If not for subsidized education, I'm pretty sure i wouldn't be able to afford education.

Be that as it may, please sir can you help your fellow Yoruba man relocate to US? I love Nigeria as a country but i need to survive and help my family. I graduated 2021 with almost first-class and I'm yet to secure any reasonable Job. I cannot even afford to feed myself nor support my family. I'm considering going through study. I'd have Kickstart my application for spring but i do not have a passport yet. You know i can't continue to love my country when my life is gradually wasting away. I need to look for legal means to better my life and that of my family. I'd be 28 this year with nothing to show for it. Please can you support me in any way you can?

I honestly do not understand the point of this thread Nor be by force to travel out. You can stay and enjoy Nigeria if you want. Other Africans with better country still travel. Europeans migrate and the last time I checked, no country is begging Nigerians to Immigrate.

What works for me may not work for you and I do not see the need to justify myself to anyone.

If I tire abroad, I travel back to Naija. No big deal. Shikenna.

I am in the United States and all these things you listed happens everyday. People who have spent 40 years or more in prison for crimes they did not commit. Allowing LGBT+ peeps to lecture kids in schools. Blocking road for festives is common here too. So what are you talking about. Police kill innocent people in their homes, random shooting of people in public places etc. What culture are you on about. USA public school system is presently one of the worse in the world. Several parents are sending their kids to Boarding schools in Nigeria. Even Trump is currently facing corruption charges. Here churches are being financed on a multi million dollars level. I have up to 6 churches within 4 miles of my home. What are you talking about?
I ma more scared here for my children than Nigeria.
In Nigeria I live in an Estate with 24 hrs electricity. I have solar panels. My children attend good private schools. Here the private schools are beyond my reach while the public schools are nothing to write home about. Many people are home schooling their kids. Kids cannot step out of their homes cos of kidnappers. Every single day kids are being kidnapped. In Nigeria, my kids can walk in our estate without any fear. Here, any mad guy can just shoot you for no reason. What da f.. are you talking about.
Rest joo. What stvpid culture is here?
No culture is better than my Yoruba culture of contentment, respect and love of family! None!
Even to get a doctor appointment here is a struggle. People are going back to Nigeria to get quality treatment for less money. Guy stop living in fantasy!

I think rather than leaving a lucrative job in Nigeria to do menial jobs abroad is not wise.

Rather, there are so many ways of earning in dollars in Nigeria without travelling abroad.

That should be the goal right now - earn in dollars and spend in naira.

Most people remain in these 'so called sane' countries cos they have hold the world economy hostage by giving superficial value to their currencies. You see them as gods just like your fore fathers and they are using you as an advance slaves. Giving you jobs they can't do and then place you in a supposedly high position. Then you think you have arrived and start condemning your culture and value. They gave you scrums for you to deny your culture which you are happily doing. lol! When will you people stop being foolish by celebrating those that put your country in that bondage in the first place? Tuehh!

Misery sure loves company. So you guys don't have friends abroad that are 9-5ers?

To be fair, the thread is appropriate as we don't know how many Nigerians who emigrated via standard 9-5 work visas compared to those who resorted to menial jobs after emigrating. This thread reminds me of the Nairalander who emigrated to Australia to join his wife. Before emigrating, he was a senior accountant earning 1.1 million per month from his audit business. Today, he is a certified forklift driver. It is people like him we need their experiences. https://www.nairaland.com/7825207/japa-confused-please-advise/11

In this japa movement, all sides should be analysed so that future players know their left from their right.

From my personal experience, the so called menial job is fetching more than legal (not fraud) earnings of state or federal Permanent Secretaries.

You are not spending naira in the UK or US. Your expenses are dollar/pounds denominated, stick to it. Stop the imaginary conversions.

From those I have observed online, it seems Germany is good to reside in. But what about France and Belgium?
As for Austria, I have a friend that went their doing customer care job, but I haven't really heard from him this year, I reached out to him on all social media and got him on fb but he replied casually, I wonder what the problem is. And no be say I dey ask am for money. In fact he's the one that greets me most of the time, but I just felt it's unusual for him not to reach out. I just hope he dey good.

Yes, it is a good place to reside if one has a good job and speaks German. France and Belgium aren't that good, ditto Austria. In all, living abroad is sweet when one has a good job and knows the local language. So, if you are a tech bro in Germany, you would enjoy it, just like anywhere else.

The people who emigrate via standard work visas and PR route would not do menial jobs for long. Last last, it might be 2-4 months when they first arrive, and then they move to better paying jobs.

The Nairalander who you're talking about who's a certified forklift driver can't tell me there aren't audit jobs available for him in Australia. It is his personal choice that he chose to tow that pathway.

There are also people who choose to stay in care jobs for 5-10 years.

I agree that all sides should be analysed but with the way all these care jobs are springing up, one would think that there aren't other jobs available for immigrants.

Nigerian degrees are not respected/accepted in most of the abroad. So you have to get a masters degree or in the case of medicine, pass the board exams. I am not sure if accountants need degrees or just need to pass licensing exams.

Going abroad usually means starting again from 0,wiping the slate clean.

What usually works is if you come in through a multinational - one which has the same culture nationwide. But if you are exited from the multinational before you have perfected your resume...

There is also another issue, a lot of so called accomplished Nigerians are actually very lazy in the workplace and with competence gaps. Things you can get away with in Nigerian as a Nigerian in American as Ana American, but not in America as a japa Nigerian

There is a lady engineer I remeber who could not understand the most basic things as a trainee. She got a good job and we were all trying to train her at the time. She literally resorted to paying people to do her work for her. She also understood how to play dirty politics very well. Today she is a big person where she works. What do you think will happen if she japas as an engineer? Will she be able to cope without a foundation?

What about using PR to canada?
humilitypays:
This is an interesting topic that deserves wide exposure to get real life opinions of different Nigerians based on their real life experiences and to enlighten those planning to make a move, but the issue is, Nigerians are not honest people when it comes to issues like this. Even if they are suffering and regretting, they will never tell, they will not even share their regrets with their closest friends and relatives talk more of sharing it with strangers.

They can only share such regrets with someone far better than them whom they strongly believe would assist them, if not forget it.

But from my own experience, I would advice Nigerians earning good income in Nigeria not to abandon it outrightly to Japa with study route to countries like; UK or Canada. If you get a job offer with sponsorship you can go but do not abandon your lucrative job in Nigeria for a study route to UK or Canada right now.

UK is filled already, the only available jobs for those that are not in healthcare and not top IT experts is care job, security job and all those odd jobs that will hardly earn you 2,000 pounds a month. If you convert 2000 pounds to Naira it will look big and juicy, but remember you are not going to be spending the money in Naira? By the time you deduct tax, deduct bills like gas, electricity, car insurance if you have one, feeding and rent, you will definitely need another odd job to meet up with your bill, which means you will be working almost round the clock just to pay bills to remain in the UK.

Canada is not much different, just slightly better than UK but the extreme weather condition in some provinces will make you regret ever moving to Canada.

The best route to Japa to UK or Canada now is work visa if you are working and earning well in Nigeria, but if you are struggling or in an uncertain job in Nigeria with no future or job security, you can Japa even with study route because the future of Nigeria looks scary with the crop of people in charge of federal government of Nigeria now.

Yea, Briefly..
Graduated as a geologist in 2008, served '09. Got a job as a site supervisor 2010 and started with 35K but was 50k when I left the company in 2018. Got a high prospect job with one of the oil servicing companies 2018 and I was elated. pay was good, in excess of 300k. Then Nigeria happened. After a few months we were replaced by guys from the north (the chairman of the company is from Kano, and he literally replaced us with his kinsmen). I felt betrayed, and I made up my mind to leave, at least to where hard work is rewarded. Migrated with my family 2022 to Canada, and God has been faithful. I am not there yet, but I have hope now, I have a clear path and direction, I can plan. There are obvious challenges, but I hang on to the positives. Currently running a post grad diploma. Miss home, food, social circles, but I need the money, comfort and security too. I cant complain. Grateful to God for his mercies in all.

Please and please, if you want to japa, have the proper documentation and follow the routes approved by the government, the system will take care of you.
