I went home to celebrate Easter and grandma prepared egusi soup for me,see let me tell you egusi belongs to the yoruba people. It originated from the SW states and I can tell you egusi can be used to make many stuffs by us
Now let me ask you can igbos make ewedu elegusi, robo elegusi, alapa. Even all this talk talk that igbos make soup most in nigeria I don't believe, go to calabar and all the SS states and see many of their precious delicacies that igbo people copied.
I wish to visit calabar soon honestly, their soups are the best

Aside alapa, robo elegusi etc, there's even Egusi funfun, Egusi oshiki etc. Yoruba's have several varieties of cooking Egusi as a matter of fact, even as the name egusi is a Yoruba name.

Where in the SE are the main ingredients for Egusi , Ogbono and Okro soup found or cultivated ?

How can you claim ownership of a delicacy as your ancestral meal when none of the main ingredients are cultivated or found growing wild in your region.

Lies has become you people's benchmark now abi?

You people have now added cultural appropriation into your long list of thievery .

Ogbono is Edo delicacy made from the seeds of bush mangos.

Okro is farmed mostly in the north and was introduced by Europeans into Nigeria. In the US they refer to it as lady's fingers.

Egusi that some of you are lying through your teeth here claiming it's your delicacy is from the middlebelt with the Igala , Ebira, Idoma and Tiv people who cultivate the melon plant . Can you barefacedly lie that you guys own any of these delicacies when not one of the main ingredients of Egusi , Okro and Ogbono is not found or farmed in your SE?

Jesus you people are really something else

YORUBA IS THE BOTTOM IN NIGERIA WHEN IT COMES TO SOUP.

OIL IS USUALLY TOO MUCH.

EGWUSI IS DEFINATELY NOT A YORUBA WORD.

I'm very sure there are still some old people in your village that can still tell the story of how and when cassava, corn, egusi and some other staple food items were introduced to igboland.

AmuDimpka:
Yoruba no Sabi cook anything apart from Amala ati Ewedu

No be only cook. Lol. The lie you tell yourself. Egusi even has several delicacy varieties cooked by the Yoruba to start with.

It's Igbo who claim other people's delicacies.

Yoruba simply cook their own delicacies which are several, as mentioned below. In fact, Yoruba have got these several delicacies because that was what was required whenever a sick person was brought to an IFA man in the old time. The first thing required was to cook several delicacies for the sick person to eat because it could be hunger that got the person sick in the first place. That was how Yoruba got their several delicacies. Through IFA creative ideas and principles. Egusi which is a Yoruba word is an Orunmila's soup as a matter of fact.

Egusi has got several delicious delicacy varieties cooked by the Yoruba.

Dsimmer:

I thought Oka was Amala. People learn everyday though.

That's some good list.

Yoruba have got lots of cuisines tbh.

They've even got several varieties for each.

For example, there are several varieties for Iyan which includes :
Iyan gbere
Iyan ikoko.
Iyan isu

Amala also has its varieties such as:
Amala fifun (Lafu)
Amala dudu.

There are other food such as :

Ebiripo
Pupuru
Ekuru
Eba
Eko
Sapala
Ogi
Ofada
Garri
Akamu (Oka baba) (the baby guinea corn).

Other foods includes:

Ojojo
Akara
Moimoi
Egusi Alapa
Asaro
Langbe
Jogi
Kokoro
Adun re
Dodo ikire
etc.

There are also several varieties of Yoruba soups.

For example, efo soup has its several varieties such as :
Tete,
Soko,
ewuro,
elegede,
Yanrin,
amunututu,
iroko,
gbure etc.

Ila also has its several varieties such as:

Ila asepo ,
Ilasa,
Ila asepo,
Ila funfun,
Orunla.

Egusi also has its several varieties such as, efo elegusi, egusi funfun, ogiri etc

Aside these, there are other soups such as:

Ayamase
Ishapa
Ikokore
Obe Koowu
Ata dindin
Imoyo
Gbegiri
Ewedu
Bokolisa
Marugbo/Eweta
Obe iru
Luru
Osiki
Akuku
Apon
Opa
Eku

Yoruba have got several varieties of cooking food, soup and vegetables, considering the several varieties above. In fact, using IFA as timeline, In the old days when sick people are taken to the Awo, the first thing the person was asked was if he or she had eaten. If he's not eaten, several varieties of nutritional foods are prepared for him to eat before any other thing because it could be hunger/lack of food which got the person sick. Besides, one needs to eat food before taking medication. That's what some later term as aseje. The idea behind it was to ensure one had eaten food first before taking medication, considering most of the sick people were left at the Awo place in the old days. Same principles of eating before medication is employed in the hospital today.

If Nairaland is a microcosm of Nigeria, then it will take a miracle to get tribalism out of Nigeria. And it will take God's intervention for Nigeria to grow and prosper. Nigerians can bicker and fight over something as insignificant as "egusi soup".

Egusi is a plant that is grown mostly in the middlebelt and in some parts of Kebbi and also in Taraba and southern Adamawa.

The melon plant has to be exposed to dry and ferment in the field before it is harvested and so its growing cycle is best in areas like the middlebelt which do not have a longer and wetter rainy season like the south.

You do know I can easily get data on Egusi production by state from the web ?

ANSWER THIS QUESTION, WHICH SOUP DO YORUBA COOK THAT REQUIRES THE LEVEL OF DETAIL YOU GET IN EGWUSI?

HAVE YOU SEEN THE REST OF IGBO SOUPS AND THE DETAILS?

Y ARE THEY IDENTICAL TO EGWUSI?

The fact we cook Jollof Rice doesn't take it away that it is originated from Senegal.

It's a research paper by Muddasir Ismaila Moyi and Francis Attah Egu (an Igbo man).

You can do well to do your own research and come back.
