@Sage, Hustler,I-man and gabriel,

Where have you guys been all been all these while when I have been trying to educate peeps here to broaden their scope of European football.

Some peeps would give their world first 11 with 11 EPL players. Some people would tell me Mertesacker and Hitzfeld are unknown players (Hitzfeld Player?) imagine??

If we can all open our mind and watch all these leagues or follow them on the internet at the minimum It would make us better analysts. Someone said Hleb is a new

player yes a new player to the EPL but not to football cos he played for Stuttgart in many years before moving, Berbatov is new cos he just joined Spurs, same with

Voronin, even Rosicky. All these players have played at least 4 seasons in the Bundesliga before joining EPL teams. Now see the quality these players e.g Hleb,

Berbatov, Rosicky and lately Hargreaves brought to the EPL, These 4 are some of the most exciting players to watch in the EPL yet they would tell you

the Bundesliga where they were coming from is boring. The fact is that a lot of them are newbreed DSTV fans Arsenal fans who don't know Steve Bould. Everton and Tottenham are

big teams but Hamburg, Marseille,Fiorentina, Lens and Athletico Madrid are small teams. Even someone said Lazio and Newcastle are on the same level!!!

If you see the Ribery magic, the potency of Toni and Klose, the trickery and vision of Diego Ribas, The class of Ibrahimovic, The ball sense of Wesley Sneijder,

The steel of De Rossi, The passes of Pirlo and the beauty of European football in general you would know that the EPL is just a minute part of European football.

This is a quote from Bolaoni a so called Arsenal fan

The days of that fabulous 4: Tony Adams, Winterburn, Nixon and Keown. I remember those
glorious days of Ian Wright and Co and I beg to disagree that the Gooners were midtable
o. If my memory serves me right, they won the last League before the Premiership.

If someone listen to history he should listen well and not sprea beer parlour tales/facts Where did Martin Keown or when did Martin Keown join the fabulous back 4? i

thought it was Steve Bould.

Leeds United won the last league before the premiership. If in 3 sentences an EPL fan and Arsenal fan could make 2 factual blunders that tells you the type of EPL

fans we have on Nairaland.

Dayo,
i've always told u ur ability to undastand english wil always let u down.I said newcastles current squad is as gud lazios current squad and i named a posible newcastle xi to prove my point.u couldnt even name ANY lazio xi,still u came to the conclusion dat "theyre beta dan newcastle".Yet u keep talking about "beer parlour" arguments, wen ur d bigest culprit.
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by gabrielgb: 7:42am On Oct 30, 2007
hey dayo, sage, I-man,
you guys are right most especially about kaka. the guy was playing out of his skin through the league and even b4 the man u clash but ignorance of calcio couldn't make them see that. i realy respect EPL but its pisses me off when ppl think its the best league. for the past 10yrs how many times have they been to the final of CL. how many players have won the Ballon' or dion from there (1 owen) no other person from there. even germany had the 1st player from there luther Matthius, then we have baggio, zidane ronaldo (real one) figo, canavaro, weah and soon to be Kaka. CR is still young 21 i think but messi is growing better that will hamper CR chance of winning it because messi is fast becoming a legend.

my brief is that EPL is no doubt EPL rank among the very best but its not the best.

sagna and diarra were bought in the SAME transfer window.Besides, sagna has bin benching eboue throughout this season, and hes "new",eboue has bin arsenals #1 right back 4 d past 2 years.
hey richy diarra was used against italy because domenech was trying to avoid defeat. you could see that the guy the not overlap at all in that game.

EPL players have great pace and stamina (drogba CR, rooney, teves, etc)
Laliga & calcio players have great techniques and tactical ability. ( R10, totii, Ibrahimovich, messi, kaka, pirlo, seedorft etc.) why do nu think R10 did not come to EPL, or why do u think Shevi isa flop in EPL.

This weekend Roma -Milan, Arsenal-Liverpool and Sevilla-Valencia were all excellent matches of the highest order.
in fact those macthes were great no doubt.

@I-man, Sage,Gabrielgb,Hustler,Dayokanu
The problem we have with people watching the EPL is just that too many Arsenal fans believe their players are the best in the world. Left to me, Iniesta is a better player compared to Fabregas but we just cant take it away from Fabregas. he has been a superb player this season and im sure Aragones will start looking his way in order to make him more prominent.

The Serie A obviously has got arrays of talents, peeps like Totti, kaka,Pirlo,Seedof, Buffon are players that can light up any game anytime and we saw what happened to my dear United when only Kaka and Seedof, and Gatusso took us to the cleaners. But you guys, what do you think about the Bundesliga?
Can you sit down and watch a game between hamburg and Stuttgart?

@Dayokanu
Bolaoni i think is a United fan. Hes not a Gaynner
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by ritchboy(m): 8:11am On Oct 30, 2007
Epl players also hav great technique-berbatov,rosicky,hleb,joe cole etc.And serie a/la liga players also hav great pace-messi,robben,robinho etc.
Though i get ur point.Theres more pace in england n theres more technique in serie a/la liga.

A game between Hamburg and stuttgart??WHy not. Growing up i remember when i used to watch bundesliga highlights on NTA.the n i loved dortmund with players such as Andreas Moeller and one of the best players i have seen from Germany, Mathias Sammer.Bundesliga is not that bad its just that ppl dont get to see enuff of it.Dont remember the last time i saw a live bundesliga match.

I know i saw a cpl last season.ITs amazing that the entire EPL didnt know Berbatov until he came last season. To me he was just one of the numerous quality players in the german league. But in the EPL he has become a KING.Na wa o.What about if the likes of Diego,Lincoln,Frings,Mario Gomez, decide to come to the EPL.

WHat ever happened to players like Mario Basler,Andreas Moeller. I know Sammer used to coach Dortmund at one time.Lars Rickler,Alex Zickler.

WHats Rudi Voeller up to these days

@Dayokanu

This present Bayern squad could become the best ever .Or what do u think. THough i prefer the one that narrowly lost to Man U in 1999.Effenberg??,Jancker,Scholl,Kuffour,a young and fit Kahn who else was in dat squadWAs Linke and Alexander Zickler in dat squad?Where is Jens Jeremies by the way?? Too bad Deisler had to quit. He was promising. Is Andreas Ottl still around. He is promising too.I think u guys should loan Podolski out so it doesnt turn to a bad situation there.

I feel they had the best transfer campaign.Just look at the no of goals your "Kloni" have scored in b/w them. We really miss those scenes of Luca Toni winding his ears in Serie A.
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by tkb417(m): 9:50am On Oct 30, 2007
@Hustler
yeah, Dortmund has produced some scintillating futbol yeah i agree. I would say i started seeing the german league on TV even before the rush for the premiership.

But these days, what you see is rather a complete opposite of the good old days. Check out Hamburg last season, check out stuttgart this season, check out werder last season, even the numero uno is doing days at the UEFA grin grin

Its appalling and i dont think i want to be a part of it. Its still better when you see games that involves the top dawgs just like the recent Dortmund and bayern, but check out the other teams play, im sure you will sleep the whole 90minutes.
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by dayokanu(m): 1:41pm On Oct 30, 2007
Yeah I think the Bayern team of those days 90's was classy they had a lot of outstanding players but they also had a lot of in fighting amongst them that was why they were tagged "Fc Hollywood" then when Hitzfeld came around the players with mega egos had to leave or bend e.g basler left afetr a bust up with Hitzfeld, Effenberg kept his cool and became the player he should have been a long time ago. A Real Midfield general. Thomas Linke and Alex Zickler were in the squad of 1999 but in the fringes most of the time. Zickler can't even smell it cos Elber was there.

Jens jeremies has retired last season. Scholl too left last season. Its a pity Deisler had to retire at the age of 26 he was a very promising player right from Mochengladbach to Hertha berlin to bayern but his career was blighted by injury and psychological problem now he has retired to his son Raphael and his 10 year older Brazilian wife grin grin

Andreas Ottl is still very much around though his playing time has been reduced compared to last years. The management don't want to loan out Podolski because when Injury strikes the KLONi attack we might be short in front also Podolski is a german project, He needs to play in a club where he would be protected because of the impact he might have for the national team so also with Kroos we can't allow them to go abroad and be benched till they lose form.

Like I said all these exciting players you see in the EPL came from the Bundesliga e.g Hleb, Rosicky, Berbatov, and hargreaves and you mean the Bundesliga is not exciting. If you can watch Diego, Van der vaart, Ribery, are some of the most exciting/ creative footballers in European football.

I dont think he has spent a season in Bayern. so whats the talk about him wanting to go to europe? i dont know of any club in europe running after him. even Podolski
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by gabrielgb: 5:50pm On Oct 30, 2007
hey hustler and dayo. thx men you refreshed my memory big time. i have completely forgotten about that beyern era. i effenburg was my best player then. my best moment was the season beryern won the CL beat their nemesis ( defeating madrid and man u) i was realy glad that season.

well i think the present beryen is not as good as the golden team. i saw one of their match and they played realy strong. this beryen reminds me of juve of 2002-4

Effenberg??,Jancker,Scholl,Kuffour,a young and fit Kahn who else was in that squad

We Had Bixente Lizarazu who did not play the final due to suspension replace bt Michael Tarnat ,I think Markus Babbel was right back, Lotthar Matthaus, Mario Basler,

Matthaus was subbed for Torsten Fink and Basler was subbed too when the crumble began. Jeremies also played
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by gabrielgb: 6:38pm On Oct 30, 2007
i think the biggest mistake was removing Lotthar Matthaus. that game was realy painfull ( more than milan vs liverpool)i almost cried and couldn't go to sch the next day.

i wasn't realy sad when milan lost. i ran home b4 the pks. i just knew milan was gonna loose.
but italy and beryen were games i dont want to be riminded of often. i am the only italian fan among my friends ( and this guys are like richboy they are very annoying.)

Damn

you guyz are begining to bring back the memories  smiley

The days of Carsten Janker and Gio Elber ( a patnership i rate as high, if not higher, as Andy Cole and Yorke), Effenburg running the Midfield. Andereas Moller and Sammer (I dont know if am correct) were also  members of the Broussia Dortmound side that put a whooping to ManU both home and away and beat Zidane's and Vieri's Juventuz on their way to Champions League glory.

Ive been a Milan Fan since the days after the the legendary Dutch Trio, when George Weah was running riot grin

It seems a long time now though its only been 10 yrs cheesy

Football has changed so much now. Its no longer the days of b/w Albertini, Redondo, Effenburg and Davids who was the best midfield marshall. (Its so sad. I remember when i used to have those conversations)

All we hear now is Arsenal this, Arsen Wenger that , Chelsea this and that.

When i was in Uni in Nigeria, people could never believe that i was not an Arsenal or Man U fan

Then Chelsea came plus DSTV and it became worse. Bandwagon fans all over the place from nowhere.

I think most of us that are not fazed by EPL propaganda are those who have been watching football for a long time

sage you are right. money and tv rights has change alot of things in futball world. i cant stop reminising the days of dechamps, conte zidane, vially etc in juve, albertini, boban, weah, custacutta, bierhoff etc for milan, Effenburg, scholl, elber mathias, anderson for beryen ( cant forget how kuffor was crying, i was about crying myself), evn the rise of madrid; miatovic, young raul, seedorf etc. futball has changed alot. i dont know if its for the better or was.
God bless memory.
thanks guys sage, dayo and hustler from bring back good memory (not italy vs france, beryen vs man u)

PS not that i hate man u then, i just hate the way beryen lost.
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by hustler(m): 7:50pm On Oct 30, 2007
@ Sage,

Remember Bruno N'gotty and Desailly gave their best football to Milan before they came to retire in England LOL. O ALbertini, one of the best dead ball specialists i have ever seen in my life. Do u remember Maurizio GanzzLOL Bierhoff in Euro 96 and in Milan. How many goals did he ever score with his foot seff. He could use his head very well.Leonardo and redondo.

. Remember Weah's goal when he took the ball from our area and scored. Wat team was that again. Was it not Parma?? Sheva's goal against Juve in 2000. Glorious moments.

Where are the Bergomi's of this world, the Toricelli's Angelo di livio's, Franco Baresi (the best defender i have seen in my entire life).Roberto Baggio(the LovePeddler cuz he slept with Juve,Inter and Milan), What ever happened to ivan Zamorano?? Pierluigi Casiraghi.Roberto Mancini at lazio and Vieri too when he was Vieri.Remember the Parma squad that had Thuram,Cannavaro,Buffon,Morfeo,Crespo too.LOL. The real glory days of Italian football.

I miss those days o guyz.

is this thread about our sadest moment in futball?
99 was man u's yr they beat inter, juve, and beryern. sage you are right how on earth the juve loose the semis to man u? juve didn't make use of thier domination like milan, they lost 2ice and the semis to man U was unbelievable.

CL was realy good to watch then no doubt.
beryen made me realy happy when the took the CL in 2001-2002, beating man U and madrid was so cool.

i am praying for the return of classic juve to europe.
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by dayokanu(m): 8:11pm On Oct 30, 2007
I could remember then in O.A.U Ife less than 200 of us watched Monaco vs Juve semi finals ans about the same number for Juve vs Madrid in the final.

A few years later the same handful went to watch Chelsea vs lazio I supported Lazio that day and we had just about 40 Chelsea supporter. That day Lazio Beat Chelsea in

London. Poyet I think scored for Chelsea and Inzaghi equalised and Sinisa Mihajlovic got the winning goal from a trade mark free kick after a Cele foul.

Dortmund of then was exciting to watch, Stephan Klos in goal, the iron curtain duo of Matthias Sammer ans Jurgen Kohler, Paolo Sousa who came in from Juve, Karl heiz

Riedler who buried Juve in the Final, Stephane Chapuisat, Lars Ricken, Jorg heinrich, Andy Moller, Do you guys remember Heiko Herrlich the present german under-17 coach was in

Dortmund then. I supported Dortmund that year as part of the National solidarity.

When I was in Uni, I hated all those Man Utd ppl cos they were so much and won't allow you to hear anything apart from treble. The day Bayern beat Man Utd home an

away in 2001 , I threw a mini party free shaks for friends . Arsenal and Chelsea were non issues then.

infact if italy plays nigeria i will support italy.

no country can will the wc with the input of calcio its just impossible.

do you know that the last world cup had 8 juve players past and present, and 5 ,milan players past and present in the final?
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by dayokanu(m): 8:28pm On Oct 30, 2007
Hustler,

Those were the days of Serie A, remember Kanchelskis in Fiorentina, Batistuta, Abel balbo, etc. Aspirilla, Zola of Parma , Mancini, Marchegianni, Salas, Boksic in Lazio, Then

those cocaine addicts/ butchers of Juve, Peruzzi,Ciro Ferrrara, Toricelli, Angelo di Livio, Conte, added to Davids plus the flair of Zidane, Del pierro, Vialli , Ravanelli, Allen

Boksic, Vieri and later Inzaghi whie Inter had Ronaldo, Diorkaeff, Taribo, Bergomi, Zamorano Moriero, Cauet, before Ventola joined. AC had Weah and Bierhoff whom they

purchased from Udinese Maldini, Leonardo, Costacurta, Marco Simeone with the white boot, Savicevic, Desailly, The players I remember in Roma then was Aldair and Cafu
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by Iman3(m): 12:23am On Oct 31, 2007
I started following Serie A closely in 97/98 season, that was when Juventus stole(again) the title from Inter.Inter had the best team but "mystical" refereeing decisions didn't help. That season,Udinese overperformed with Alberto Zaccheroni as manager-he won the Scudetto the following year with AC Milan.

Staying on the subject of "World Best Manager",I always wondered why Marcello Lippi struggled outside Juventus. He did well at Napoli but was a huge disappointment at Inter.Despite his World Cup victory,I still rate him lower than Trappatoni and Fabio Capello. It was rumored that he was offered the Valencia job but he declined to accept, informing club officials to check back on the 17th of November since there is a chance Donadoni might lose his job if Italy don't qualify.

Speaking of the good ol' days.Does anyone remember when an 'unknown' Dynamo Kiev came to the Nou Camp and trashed mighty Barca 4-0? shocked shocked Valeri Lobanovsky, one of the greatest managers in European football, was at the helm then against Louis Van Gaal's Barca-http://videos.emule.com/play/barcelona---dynamo-0-4-champions-league-97-98-(cnB94rT4DqE
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by dayokanu(m): 9:26am On Oct 31, 2007
@ I-man, Do you still remember the Bierhoff, Marcio Amoroso pair in Udinese?

Juve was the Serie A untouchable. Did you hear what happened to Torino the great Torino side of the mid 20th century the whole team died in a plane crash. I am not saying

Juve is responsible but their reputation as bad boys preceeds them.

Then Juve had some murderers as defenders Talking about Ciro Ferrara, Paolo Montero who collects a red card every match, Alessio Tachinardi that guy is surely on drugs,

Angelo Di Livio the dwarflike individual, Mark Torricelli, Conte, does anyone remember Daniel Fonseca? Pessoto, Birindelli,Didier Deschamp even Oliseh was

considered too soft for Juventus who dare makes any decision against the Vecchia Signora, Old Lady a.k.a Bianconeri( white and Black) of Turin?

You know Lippi like Benitez of now shot himself in the foot by taking Inter(a cursed team) broke the bank bought Vieri $45million + Diego SImeone) had the replica of the

Kloni strike force then the two most dreaded strikers Vieri and Ronaldo, but could not still win any thing. When reporters interviewed him about the dwindling fortunes of

Inter he sai it was unfortunate. Asked what he would have done if he was the President and he answered that he would sack the coach and he duly got sacked few days

later Weird

Dynamo Kiev had Shevvy, Oleg Luzhny, Sergei Rebrov then and they were an unstoppable team in 1999 it took the grit and experience of Bayern to put a stop to the

Dymano train talk about character. grin grin

I remember those names, those were the days of Italian football smiley

But you forget Van Basten . . . one of the best strikers in the world, playing for AC Milano

I could go crazy for that guy. Then there was Zinedine Zidane for Torino plus Edgar freaking Davidz.

Bierhoff's career ended after udinese, his move to milan did no good.

A lot of names you call bring back memories.

Not really true my brother.

United and AC are my teams anytime.
Just as you guys have been eulogising the fallen standards of the SERIE A. Its painful though. Some great partnerships that time will make you think Futbol was domiciled mainly in Italy.
Whatever happened to the likes of Udinense,Fiorentina,Parma that they cant even hold their own again is painful.

@dayokanu
i think, you have forgotten totally about Sampdoria and what they did in the serie A. how come Bierhof and amoroso will be your most untouchables in serie A?
Anyways, its not lieing in state yet for the serie A, AC is still keeping the flag flying, Inter is always a fumbler while Juve should be back soon.

Thanks for reminding me of marco simeone, sevisevic and Asprilla. Where are these guys? i hope Asprilla isnt into cocaine grin grin
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by dayokanu(m): 12:50pm On Oct 31, 2007
I said Juve is the Serie A untouchable not Bierhoff- Amoroso. Just referred to them as the Udinese Strike partner.

In 1997/98 Bierhoff was top scorer in Serie A and the following year 1998/99 Marcio Amoroso was top scorer so they can claim to be a very hot pair.
Re: Who's The World's Best Football Coach? by Iman3(m): 2:09pm On Oct 31, 2007
@Dayokanu

I remember Amoroso because he eventually turned out a huge dissapointment. He ended up at Dortmund at some point, don't know where he is now.

What undermined Serie A was financial problems at the beginning of the 21st century.

Parma used to be a strong team-Cannavaro,Thuram,Buffon et al.(those 3 made a pact that none of them will leave until Parma wins Serie A embarassed)-When Parmalat(Parma's sponsor) collapsed, the 3 were on their bike embarassed .That was the best defensive partnership in the league, there was another guy,an Italian,I have forgotten his name, they used to play 3 at the back.

Fiorentina was also a solid team then but the club President ran into difficulties. The most spectacular collapse was Lazio. They were the Chelski of the 99/00 season-Sven literally bought the title but it was a welcome relief from the Juventus/Milan stranglehold.

I didn't really see it coming for I had seen Lazio demolished in the Rome derby by Capello's Roma(that was when I decided to start supporting Roma in Serie A,I had a team for each major league).Montella and Delvecchio destroyed Lazio (the latter was the world strangest footballer. . . . he seemed to have no technique whatsovever undecided )

The previous season,Sven's Lazio surrendered the title despite leading by 7 points with 4 games to go(Sven's rep for raising hopes only to dash them was sealed for eternity,Man City take note grin ) AC Milan won their last 4 games while Lazio lost 3 of the last 4.

Talking about spectacular finishes to Serie A,remember 2001/2002? Hector Cuper(The Universal President of the Associaton of "Nearly Men"wink and Inter Milan were in pole position going into the last game against Lazio.Despite the fact that Lazio fans wanted Lazio to lose,Inter still lost 4-2,Lazio fans were booing their victory grin I think Lazio fans were worried about Roma winning,Roma finished second behind Juventus eventually.

I still think the Serie A is the best league in the world because the quality across the league is more balanced than in England today.Yes,the top 4 English sides are probably better than the top 4 Serie A sides but a league is made up of 20 teams not 4.There is greater quality across the Serie A.Just look at Milan now,I believe they are in 13th place alongside Lazio.Probably,Ancellotti is getting complacent or is it Il Duce(S.Berlusconi) who doesn't want to spend big? undecided

PS:The 3rd guy in the Parma's super trio was Sartor

Yeah, that parma team was good was Enrico Chiesa in that team too? They won UEFA cup I remember Hernan Crespo, Diego Fuser, Sensini, Dino Baggio, Boghossian, e.t.c

You know Lazio collapse to was probably due to the crises in Cirio foods and the owner Sergio Cragnotti. They probably over spent themselves Imagine a squad with

Crespo, Veron, Salas, Paolo Negro, Nesta, Pancaro, Peruzzi, Sergio Conceicao, Gianichedda, Claudio Lopez, Nedved, Mihajlovic a real all star team they came and won

their own title.

I still remember the last game of the season when Roma won the league. Roma vs Parma. Roma needed to win in Rome they were leading 2-0 when Parma pulled one back

by that time the stadium was tensed up they probablt thought Parma would equalise and Roma would lose the title towards the end Roma scored to make it 3-1. The fans

stormed the field and stripped all the players of their clothes they couldn't wait for the final whistle before they collected the souvenirs from their heroes.

I remember that Rome derby which ended 5-1 see Delvecchio taking Nesta apart.

Remember when Vieri joined Lazio from Athletico they had one decent run they won like 9 games in a row before losing steam and they finished 2nd.

Delvecchio is a player I can not just define he even looks weird.

That 2001/2002 season made me to conclude about Inter that they are hopeless On that last day I was supporting Inter hoping they and hector Cuper would win but

how wrong was I. Lazio scored first Vieri equalised Lazio score again I think Poborsky scored twice that day. then Luigi Di Biaggio remember him? equalised before lazio

finnally routed them I can still remember Ronaldo weeping when they heard that Trezeguet and Juve were winning 2-0 and Roma won 1-0. Inter was 3rd at the end.

Hector Cuper is a notorious nearly man always losing at the final hurdle remember Mallorca losing Winners cup final to Lazio, Valencia losing 2 Champions league final to

real and Bayern, then Inter losing the league the last day. Jinxed Man!!
