Are you aware that they at times reject non-immigrant visas just because they had applied for the visa lottery before?
Or arent you aware that messages on social sites like 'yea aunty! i'm coming over to america and when i come i'm never going to leave and i'm going to get a job...' and your aunty replies 'lols...okay. safe journey at your student visa interview shocked' And then youre at the interview and the VO asks you what are your plans after study and you start reeling off your already-prepared answer 'to work as the best professional in my country, specialists are lacking...' and quickly at the same time checks your fb acc and sees your last posts... cool he then looks up and smiles at you kiss...of course you know the next statement that follows... grin

One way tickets are usually more expensive than round ticket. My advise is that you buy a two way and play around with your return in such a way that you get more bank for your buck.

Good luck.

Can anyone chime in on expedited visa appointments please? I`ve tried to ask the question twice. Anyone had luck getting one?

Thanks.

Yes you can come to the US on a one way ticket with a student visa for most airlines (i don't even know which airline doesn't allow) and to erase all doubts call the carrier/wakanow to confirm.

More often than not, round trips are more expensive, especially at times like this, when it could be way more expensive!

Round ticket is a waste for student that will not come home within a year. Most of the airlines return ticket expires after a year. Most of them are now restricting one way cos they experienced great loss last year. The law says if someone is rejected at the port of entry, the airline that brought the person must take him back. Whether he has a return ticket or not, they must return the person. If the person has entered and US Immigration discovered irregularities, the US government will take care of the cost.

When I got to this understanding, I don't blame those airlines that refuse one way.

Airline like Maroc air, Alitalia, and co that still accept one way, you must show them your document (VISA and I-20)so that they know nothing is stopping you at the port of entry.

I guess thats what nailed your chances of getting the visa. You gave the VO that you had an alternative already in Nigeria which would also be cheaper for you as well. You dont need to mention that part when going for the interview again.

Also don't agree wiv this statement, he applied doesn't mean he was admitted in unilag. . . And it's the student's choice which of the universities he goes to. . . Not the VOs

This is not feasible. . . I still dunno how a 1 way can be more expensive than a return. . . Agents just say that cos they get less commissions on 1 way bookings

I know it's disappointing but it's true about the visa lottery when the day is so so bad. In my presence in Dec 21, a young undergraduate applicant was told ''You applied for the just concluded visa lottery and so you are not qualify for an F-1 visa''. Everybody was shocked. I was part of those who claims lottery doesn't concern getting student visa but on that day, when they are looking for a way of cutting the number of students issued visa...Yes! visa lottery concerns F-1 visa. Fortunately, I didn't apply for the lottery only that year (2011) but unfortunately I was also denied on another ground grin

My advice would be, don't apply for the visa lottery if you are going for your interview around Nov/Dec i.e during or immediately after visa lottery application and hope you are getting the student visa.

Nairalanders please i need your candid opinion:

is it advisable to book appointment for spring 2013 on January 2, or i should book it NOV/DEC 2012? This is because i have not written the TOEFL exam

But my school stated it clearly on my 1-20 form that the student has the required English proficiency and also the international admission officer send me a back up mail to take the embassy for that effect, will the consular officer honor this e-mail letter or i should Go and write the exam, why am asking is that the school said when i arrive, they will set an exam for me to take there.

Do the us consular in Abuja have slot for students, and does they time they give student visa?

A friend of mine whose school does not need TOEFL, and the guy was going for masters was rejected on the ground of TOEFL,won't they still use that as a creteria toooooo, but am going for undergraduate shaaaaaaa

Very much possible sir! Sometimes a one-way ticket is more expensive than a round trip even when you check directly on the carrier's website without going through an agent. I think the trick is to overprice their one-way tickets unreasonably to market their return tickets.

Imperiouxx is right, when the day is bad, they may use it as a convenient excuse to deny. If you have not played the visa lottery as of now I think it is best to follow Imperiouxx's advice of staying away. If you have played the most recent one or any one at all, do not deny it out rightly. A kinda "safe" response is to tell the VO one that of your brothers/friends/sisters/etc has made it a habit to be playing for you every year and that you would not be surprised if it has already been played for you this year cos you don't keep a tab on it. The overall goal is to eliminate any impression of lingering desperateness to go the US despite having played the lottery.

Its actually true, your facebook comment could lead to your refusal especially if its a negative one, the restriction settings on facebook is not automatic, you need to configure which alot of people do not do.

Embassies and employers search your online activities to know what you have being upto and its not illegal.

While I wouldn`t say for a fact that this in not true, I would say applying for visa lottery should not disqualify anyone from seeking other non immigrant visas. I personally know people who got visiting and student visas few months after applying for visa lottery. To the consular officer, every NIV applicant is an intending immigrant irrespective of what you have done or not done in the past.

I have seen people denied immigrant visas too for several reasons. So, do not be afraid to take the next step just because someone was denied due to reasons you really don`t know. Bear in mind the consular officers are people like you and me. They aren`t heartless. They are trained and guided by rules.

Also, be careful what you say or do online. It can make or break you. I do this, most people do too: look up someone on google. You will be surprised what you see. A friend almost got dropped from a promotion list because of some crazy pictures of her and some equally crazy friends. She was called to it by the interviewer and she subsequently "closed" her FB account. Be wise.

When you eventually get to the land of the free as you will soon discover, keep your brain in your head. No pun intended. It is easy to excel academically if you know what you are doing.

Good luck.
