PoliticsRe: Soyinka To Patience Jonathan - Be A Lady Before Being A "First Lady" by 99cent: 3:28am On Jul 16, 2013
Xtfield: Many of Soyinka'a critics do not seem to know him.

1. Who was the man who stood against Akintola in Western region in 1965? Ans: Wole Soyinka
2. Who visited Biafra in the heat of the Nigerian Civil War? = Wole Soyinka (He got clamped into jail for this)
3. Who stood against the recklessness of the Gowon regime - wrote a book on this -"The Man Died" that was banned by the the Government? Ans. Wole Soyinka
4. Who spoke up against the financial recklessness of the Sagari regime? Ans = Wole Soyinka
5. Who spoke against the high-handedness of the Buhari/Idiagbon regime? - Wole Soyinka
6. Who spoke up against the ruthlessness of the Abacha regime? - Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka has spent more years in detention under different regimes because he will not keep quiet while the masses of the country are being raped by any government. He has spoken up again and he is being vilified by people who will not pause to think. The truth is always bitter. I did not cast my vote for Patience Jonathan. I voted for her husband. She is not my president, Jonathan is. If patience have any contributions to running the country, she should give it to her husband in the confines of their home. There is nothing chauvinistic about this. Sane and decent people will be appalled at what this unelected woman is doing. She should be called to order by her husband. Of course we all know that the man does not have the strength.
Your comment makes no sense.
No one elected Soyinka as a political official so he has no constitutional right to meddle in the affairs of Nigerian politics either. Who voted for him?
On the other hand, Patience Jonathan is our First Lady. She should be involved in Nigeria by virtue of her title. If u don't like it, next time elect a celibate or divorced president. This is no longer 1920 when women are confined to kitchen and can only be "seen and not heard"

I can also create a list of good works Patience Jonathan has achieved for Nigeria (and esp. Nigerian women) despite she has only been in the arena for just a few yrs. Wonder why u didn't consider that.

This Soyinka guy is getting old and need to go and have a rest somewhere. He is going the same way of Achebe.

A (male) Nairaland member has created a thread to commentate properly on the issue. I wonder how people will respond to the thread.
Soyinka's works and plays are well known to have a chauvinist/elitist bias which explains the thread title.

Soyinka: The Chauvinist Bitterness For The Empowerment Of Women In Nigeria by akpomeme(m): 12:59am

The elitist sense of self that the educated and fortunate class of people carry on their shoulders has become a burden to over 90% of Nigerian voters who do not fall within this segment. This segment is well occupied by all knowing narcissus “Wole Soyinka” and his kinds; who now believes that his acknowledged monkey see monkey do achievement by colonial factors gives him the right to belittle Nigerian women in politics.

Patience Jonathan may not have had fair opportunities in life just as elitist Soyinka, but one cannot take away the tenacity of Patience Jonathan and her willingness to make mistakes in pursuit of goals. She campaigned for husband during the last election, the elite class laughed at her but she was well understood by her constituency (Women – Educated and otherwise).

Her successes irked the less than 10% opinionated elite class who already defined the office of the first lady to be something beyond Patience; an everyday Nigerian woman. This was most recently highlighted by the calls for her to be relegated to ‘being a lady first before being a first lady’. The truth of the matter is that Patience Jonathan understand that there is nothing lady like about Nigerian politics. Buhari once noted that he rather not run for the highest job in Nigeria if the best his alliance can produce is Ngozi Okonjo who should be in the kitchen cooking for her husband, Such is the story of Nigerian politics.

You will agree with me that under President Jonathan, more women have been empowered far more than any other government in the history of Nigeria has ever done. This battle is one of those battles being fought by Patience Jonathan. Nigerians should always read in-between the line when a frail that is good enough for men is considered not good enogh for women. Professor can criticise madam first lady all he want, but he can not detract the battle for empowerment of women in politics by Patience Jonathan. Chauvinism and elitism cannot win elections where erroneous diction can.

https://www.nairaland.com/1357050/soyinka-patience-jonathan-lady-before

Wole Soyinka has accused Patience Jonathan of being behind the rivers state crisis. He didn't provide any evidence or proof for his accusations. But it is highly suspect that he is infuriated over Bipi's esteem of Patience. Somehow just that fact that Bipi holds patience in high esteem means to soyinka that patience has power which she should not have as a "lady"
http://news.naij.com/40015.html

wole soyinka's words verbatim:
She is a wife, she is an unconstitutional being, she should not be empowered to such an extent that she is flouting the prerogative, the rights and the responsibilities of the governor of any state, in Rivers, Lagos or in any other state.
this is beyond absurd and I am highly disappointed in Soyinka.
according to him, it is "unconstitutional" for wives to give their husbands and friends political opinion. LOL

I guess he feels he (as a male) should have more authority over Nigerian politics than our first lady should have. seeing as he has an opinion on everything and doesn't seem to see the problem with his own actively meddling involvement in Nigerian politics. I wonder how he rationalizes that.

legislators throwing chairs and beating each other up. not an uncommon spectacle in Nigerian politics.

Unspoken rules are behavioral constraints imposed in organizations or societies that are not voiced or written down. They usually exist in unspoken and unwritten format because they form a part of the logical argument or course of action implied by tacit assumptions. Examples involving unspoken rules include unwritten and unofficial organizational hierarchies, organizational culture, and acceptable behavioral norms governing interactions between organizational members.

This is for Davidylan. Eat ur heart out. What do you think of Hillary Clinton now huh? She was the "crazy feminist" when she started out. She was vilified and called every abusive name in the book for being an ambitious woman and not "submissive and traditional" like the first ladies before her. Now that she is fulfiling her ambition you assume and pretend as if she just magically rose up to high ranks without having to face criticism from anti-feminists like you. The public vilification that is meant to put women "in their place" (on whatever issue it may be) do not faze feminists and that is why you are threatened.

Now that their are laws, who is preventing women from taking advantage of them? Patriachs? lol. Sit there "gbaming" while your mates are working as surgeons, senators and now president when Hillary runs in 2016.

American women are begining to step up for office and guess what? they are winning by large margins. We are 3 yrs removed from the next US presidential elections and yet Hillary is trumping all her potential male opponents by more than 10 points. When other women make the choice to step up they will get our votes.

music video about patriarchal culture that promotes the idea of the "dumb blonde" or "ditzy girl"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR4yQFZK9YM

in the 50s, intelligence was ranked almost last in qualities men looked for in a wife. looks and submissiveness ranked very high. this is where the idea of "dumb blonde" comes from. women were encouraged to act dumb in order to get a husband so that the won't hurt their husband's ego. ex. A woman who received PhD was told it meant "push husband down" etc and this is right before the second feminist wave (naturally of course the femninists were less likely to be married back then - for good reason grin). of course this idea still permeates the media as u can see from the Pink! video. above. things have changed a lot since then course but we are not completely there yet.

Car TalkRe: Jeep Vs SUV: What's The Difference? by 99cent: 12:15am On Jul 14, 2013
There are many brands of SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). you have toyota, jeep, honda, hummer etc
jeep is just a brand or company name. they specialize in SUVs only which is why people associate it with SUVs. Another brand that only produces SUVs is Hummer. People associate them with trucks/SUV because these companies don't produce small cars.

SUV is a cross between a car and a truck. It's usually used by families with too many children/ large families that can't fit in a small car. or people who haul things and don't want to buy a big truck.

from left to right: Truck, SUV, car.

PoliticsRe: We Should All Be Feminists- Chimamanda Adichie by 99cent:
souldust: i think the biggest reason feminism have not being able to achieve its legitimate aims is that feminists are most times confrontational and abusive. Sometimes you hear them say that the man does not matter! But tell me who likes to be looked down upon?

When you are being confrontational with the man and insult him, you make him not to see the sense in what you are saying. You make him do what every other living thing would do- to get defensive! This is the first line of action of any animal that feels threatened.

fact is, for women to achieve their legitimate aims, the man has to support her and see reasons with her. If not, then the human race will continue to experience a slow pace development in equality.

Let me be fair to feminists and say that i understand why they get confrontational. I mean, if any animal experiences injustice of the harshest and senseless type, that animal is bound to get confrontational.

Twist a dog's tail and that dog is not going to beg you to "pls, leave me alone". It will follow you with the strongest bite!

Just as men get defensive when confronted by feminists, women have to get confrontational when they see a sharp injustice.

When you read that which is above, you will come to see how close we are to all animals! We are animals walking on two feet.
feminism has and continues to fight for and achieve legitimate aims wink
your opinion that women should be subservient to a man; kneel down obsequiously to beg the man for basic rights is the main reason why feminism exists. women aren't children, neither are they slaves or servants to be treated as such.
if your ego is so big that you feel it's ok to insult a woman or feminists but cannot tolerate it when she insults you back then the problem lays with you. you (and many males) were probably raised to believe that a woman is below you and isn't deserving of respect and dignity due to her gender and that is the main problem behind gender inequality.

the men who get defensive when confronted by feminists are just insecure beta males.
Warren Buffet is famous for stating that the reason for his success is because he only had to compete with half the population. At least he admits this. The anti-feminists are threatened and in denial that's all.

something for you to note is that this is not really a man vs woman issue. it's a feminist vs anti-feminist issue.
there are many male feminists just as there are many female (although some of them are just sycophants) anti-feminists.
If you watch the chimamanda's video she clearly states that her brother is the most feminist person she knows! I'm sure her husband is probably the second third most feminist person (after her). lol

many men do support girls and women's goals and ambitions. usually it is these men's daughters that go on to achieve great things. Either that or she must have been raised with a strong mother or attended schools where girls were taught to nurture their ambitions.

NB: this post is a response to Souldust's comment and I would greatly appreciate it if the pack (biolabee, toshman, davidylan, camerooon) can keep off. You will not get any response from me as I have no time for attention seeking salivating wolves.

ogugua88: So reaffirming what I stated earlier, laws are not the answer. We have to tell our girls they can truly be anything and give them the needed support to get them through. My opinion.
I agree with everything you've said. although I think the law also plays a role even though I agree that it is not the answer.
women should watch the law because these change all the time. esp. depending on the type of government in power (congress especially) women should especially watch out for the bills that are being passed in congress and put into law that may restrict women. sometimes, laws reinforce positive attitudes in people and let people know what is OK and what is NOT. ex. I will say that acceptance of gays in american society is positively correlated with the achievements they have made in gaining legal rights. people may have ill feelings towards gays but their ability to cause overt harm is limited because of laws. women can sue for discrimination in the work place based on laws and report harassments based on laws that were created to protect the rights of women, minorities and other groups etc. so laws are an important legitimizing tool. at least even if the law isn't being enforced all the time, we can point to it.

but I agree with you that PATRIARCHAL MINDSET/ PSYCHOLOGY is the main problem. It is very insidious and dangerous and is the ROOT of the problem.
