Honestly guys, there is really nothing to prove here again. Did you notice how none of them have been able to provide just one counter argument aside from empty threats?
You guys should stop engaging them. Already the true Ebane people know what to do.
OfoIgbo: That his map of Benin empire even covers Ibibioland, Efik, Ejagham, and parts of Igala, Idoma, Tiv and Amazonian territories
To him, these people are all Benin people
If I get a bit of time later on today, I will blow the nigga to smithering, with ancient documents.
Here sounded like an ignorant kid in his first post that was why I even answered him. But with that map of Benin he posted, he made it obvious he is living under a rock somewhere in Fernando Po and not in France he claimed. I could bet you he can't point where both Benin and Anioma is on that map.
I read through his post again and he didn't make a single sense. That was why he was shouting himself hoarse. To think he is a teacher like he claimed, I wonder the volume of ignorance he must have been passing on to his students.
I won't advice anyone to engage him because like it is said, you get messy when you engage a pig.
Alabo7978: Major clown. I showed you the document crowther and pepple sent to England, I showed you Dr koeller's report on how the igbos were only slaves there or came to sell their cash crops to the bonnys who didn't plant, I showed you the number counting system baikie assembled and you doubted it.
I had a chat with my cousin who lives in Bonny as I haven't been there since 2017 and probably thought Igbo language became the norm from that year. I had to ask a cousin sister who lives there with her mother who is a Bonny woman.
Y'all are fools who haven't even been to Bonny before.
Lmao!!! Did you really post this yourself? Ibani and Broken igbo. What were you trying to verify.
If you want to know what language is spoken in Opobo, go and check the first page where I have just posted a video from Opobo.
I am impressed with your honesty and desire to make some findings. Unlike the other guys who claim they are from Bonny and tell us they are at the waterfront as we speak.
Truthvalue41: Why do the usual Nigerian ignoramus always assume he is intellectually superior to whomever he is talking to ? For your information, I am a mathematician who earned his degrees in France, also I am a teacher in France. Now you know I am smarter than you so you can stop beating your empty chest.
As I already stated, all precolonial maps of the region show it as being part of a precolonial country named Benin Kingdom/empire, the capital of that kingdom is called Benin city, you are obviously confusing the capital with the country itself. You clearly have a terrible grasp at history like most Nigerians. I had the luck of studying history in a country in which it actually is a serious field studied with logics rather than the Nigerian usual fairytales and politically motivated revisionism.
N.B: Edo state is located in Benin, not the other way around.
Answer to my question: most illiterates think they are geniuses because they are not exposed to higher thinking and thinkers. That is why you assumed you were my intellectual senior whereas I could probably teach the teacher of your teacher.
Oh! Merci beaucoup. This explains it. You have been away for so long in France you got inebriated with their wines.Apologies to your ancestors whose inherentance is lost wherever rabbit hole you came from. So is your map of old Benin Empire the map of a single ethnic group? Alas, you were too daft to notice it included the Eshan, Urhobo, Isoko and all other tribes (let me not even mention the anioma you claimed). I wonder how you passed your maths lesson. Well, I won't give you free history classes.
You should apologize to the French authorities for parading their certificate on that numb skull.
I am amused you parade a foreign certification like the other Mongoloid from UK except yours was in French. You guys are an apology to modern education. You brag about your degree in maths in 2021, I wonder what people studying computer vision and AI should do.
Now get out of my mentions as I won't spend my time to make up for your academic deficits.
P.S: I pity your students. Make sure you modify your genes so you don't pass that silly inheritance to your offsprings.
Truthvalue41: All precolonial maps show Anioma as being part of Benin, also I am Anioma and my uncle Obaseki is Anioma. All Anioma kings not only dress like the Oba of Benin but they also identify as relatives of the Oba of Benin. You live in a world of illusions. You are going to need to wake up to reality one day.
LOL, I am fascinated you are doing some research. Have you asked yourself why Benin is located in Edo state an not in Zamfara?
There is something called influence due to proximity. Ancient Benin influence spread to a large part of the Niger Delta including Bonny. However, it wasn't colonialism and it didn't mean those people are Benin . It was homage that most of this communities were paying to the Benin. I have an account that detailed an instance in this influence in the far Delta, but then, I am not your history teacher.
You may be Benin all you like, just don't take Late Nzeogwu along.
Ekealterego: Bkayy I think I found what you were referring to´but I just have limited access.

Let me call your umu Nna for your Chieftaincy title this December. You have done noble bro.
Truthvalue41: Later when a non-igbo says he doesn't like Igbos, people will start calling him "igbophobic", you guys are a hatefilled bunch, all you seem to dream of all day is ways to hurt other people, if the devil was a human he would probably be Igbo.
Now let us discus how you basically think you are as strong as the British empire was, because your dream seems to be about you basically doing to Benin empire's capital what the British did. The British and Benin empire fought a war and you iPod deluded fools are far from being as strong as the Benin empire or the British empire.
You guys will never make friends and quite frankly, I used to pity Igbos in the passed and I always stood by you guys when I felt others were unfair to you, but not anymore ! You guys deserve whatever you get, and stop claiming my Anioma people, we are not part of your gang of cannibals, we are part of Benin empire. All your hatred comes from the fact your ancestors used to eat humans. That cannibalism is encoded in your dna and you act it out through your hatefulness. This is the reason why nobody likes Igbos, even southern Cameroonians who used to be part of eastern Nigeria had to join Cameroon in order to not be in the same country with igbos. You guys caused a civil war, you guys go all around the world pushing drugs and making every country think all Nigerians are drug dealers... Nobody likes you guys, maybe it is time to question your behaviour ...
Dear compatriot, You sound like a young chap so let me address you like my kid bro. While I am not in support of the post that elicited your tantrums, it is not an opportunity to regurgitate your own learned hate.
It is interesting you have been taught nobody like the igbos so early. Jealousy isn't hatred. If you tend to often excel amongst your peers even in school, you would start courting their jealousy. If you say everyone hates igbos on nairaland, maybe. But not in the real world. It is one of the most repeated fallacies. Igbos are resident in all major cities including villages across the globe. Iam not sure the world would live comfortably or side by side with a people they hate like you claimed. Living their lives peacefully as major contributors to the growth and welfare of their different communities. Despite the clamour by a fraction of them for an independent state, they are the biggest stakeholders in the Nigerian project.
About your saying they started a war, I will not be your history teacher. But I ask you not to be the typical African. Read and open your mind. The world is not as dark as you think.
As per Anioma, I can imagine how ridiculous you would look telling Benin people they are same with Anioma or telling Anioma people they are Benin.
If anything, let this be a challenge to you to dare to be different. You can be the first in many things from your village. Africa is in dire need of heros and you could be one.
Stay away from drugs. Don't be an alcoholic. Stop listening to gossips from your uninformed neighbors especially at beer parlours.
You have access to the Internet and if you do not know what you can do with it, I can advise you.
In all this noise, did you notice you didn't find any prominent igbo man on this thread(despite the fact that you hate them). Do you know why? They are busy cutting deals and making their family proud.
As I type this one Kunle is somewhere in Oyo and wants to build the next big thing in Nigeria with Musa, he has called one Emeka to help him ship it. Emeka does it with the help of Akpan and Priye and they all go home happy after. You see, life is not as serious as you take it.

That doesn't mean we can't be best of friends or neighbors. It doesn't mean we can't strike a business deal tomorrow. It doesn't mean we cannot sit down round a table and have a drink at any joint around tombia roundabout. After all, several great ijaw and fine igbo families have gotten married and are so interwoven today that it is so hard to tell them apart.
We just stated things the way it is and we are not fighting. Remember aminadokiari! LOL.
For the benefit of those that don't know what we are talking about, can someone be kind enough to post some of those recent videos from Opobo where they were speaking the Ebane language.
Especially the one of one Portharcourt based pastor who was embarking on a charity mission in Opobo recently. Apostle Cookey.
I just found just found it, but I don't know how to link youtube videos.
1. The political authority over Bonny is in the hands of Rivers state Government and last I checked, it is not headed by Ijaw.
2. The cultural genocide perpetrated by INC/IYC on Bonny is enough referendum. They see Bonny as an abandoned booty right for taking.
I didn't want to answer him but since you have started it here is my feedback for him.
Identity could be influenced by political authority in Europe but not in Africa. Since no indigenous ethnic groups in southern Nigeria really colonized the other. Unless he is trying to claim the Proud progenitors of Ancient Bonny and Opobo were colonized by ijaws which hasn't been proven. Except for instances of Ijaw leaders like the current King of Nembe who confiscated Igbo properties in the old River state.
He should ask him self:
Why is Bonny and Opobo the only two places on the coast where the indigenous language is different from the acclaimed owners? Despite the Fulani hegemony over the Hauses, the Hausa language like the Ebanne has stood the test of time.
People's languages cannot be wished away by an executive fiat as is been attempted on this islands.
OfoIgbo: To be honest, I just found it this morning, and waited for the right opportunity to annihilate their claims. I looked for it for nearly a week.
I cut it out of the online version of Dr. Baikie's book about 3 or 4 years ago. Unfortunately the book was deleted when my system crashed about a year ago, and a whole lot of materials were lost, including that 1854 book by Baikie. Fortunately, the snippet I cut out remained. It has proven helpful in obliterating these landgrabbers.
Please, edit this quote to reflect my updates.
Someone should make out time to save this thread off Nairaland. It should be in an archive someone.
OfoIgbo: You guys already knocked them out a few days ago, but they keep trying to make fraudulent comebacks. I just had to apply the sniper therapy, especially now that he seems to have teed himself up properly, with the Baikie aura.
I couldn't resist the urge to deep him in sniper
Lmao.
I decree...your people should immediately confer you with a chieftaincy title.
Now I have attached a piece wherein Dr. Baikie made it quite clear, the ancestry of Bonny indigenes. I hope this will clear all doubt, especially as you want to rely on the Baikie name. cc Slayerforever 9Pluto igboid
Why have you been hiding this literature while watching us run our mouth endlessly here?
Let me rephrase.
Why hidest thou this noblest of literature from thy Ubani kinsmen?
This is the MOST explicit record for me. Imagine I didn't even see this when I was challenging the entire ijaw to a live debate on their revised history.
This is an alternate neutral account from the one I started this thread on.
All opposing arguments so far, has been mere conjectures without any historical reference. Notice how names or words are continuously twisted to give a different meaning. I keep laughing when I see Opobo spelt as Opubo, then Opuboama. I hope you guys also noticed the final blow to the Perekule claims as Pepple in this post. I first noticed in Crow's account, that the assigned English names has no bearing to the indigenous names.
This account still mentioned the same Brass people in the original post, different from Kalabari people and not a single mention of ijaw.
The last attempt at revisionism was to change the Ebanne language and they almost succeeded, unfortunately there came a coconut head generation of igbos to stop them just in time. I think the preceeding generation of igbos owe this generation an apology. But they are forgiven since they didn't have Internet access.
This literature should be posted EVERYWHERE that matters.
Please, fully reference this book. The name of the book, the author's name and date.
Ladies and gentlemen, it took us several days and 33 pages on nairaland to arrive where we started. I think we have come to the end of this debate.

Alabo7978: You see your life? I have shown you documents and you want to "lecture" by telling me useless stories. Below are screenshots of Dr baikie and how the OKOLOMA (bonny) people count Ngee Nme Tere Ini Sono Sonie Sonoma Inine Etc
How the Nembeians and other ijoh count Kio Mai Tarai Ini Sono Sonie Sonomai Inine Etc
How the igbos count Otu Abuo Ator Ano Ise ishi Asa Asato Etc
But ofoigbo is trying to tell me Bonny is Igbo and not ijo. Look at that screen shot(I typed it out so you won't claim you didn't see it) Ok, listen to your logic, you earlier said OKOLOMA IS IGBO, and that it is the same as OKOLOMA in ndoki land
I later opened your eyes and we now see that the ibos called it OKOLOBA Now you're dancing to another direction.
Now if you claim it is the same, why did the igbos call Bonny "okoloBA"
Lies full your blood too much God forbid.
Please, do not mislead people here. No neutral account so far has linked the ijaw directly with ibani unless they can prove ijaw was Brass. I find it hard to understand how or why it was so difficult for explorers to identify or mention the ijaw people in Bonny despite the fact that they could vividly identify their character traits.
That post you put up is obviously an academic write up from someone else and not Baike.
To further buttress your lies as an exercise in futility, why is there current attempts to change ibani people's current language to that thing you posted there.
Fully reference the book you quoted, the author, the title and date of the publication so real academics can make necessary findings. Thank you.
JANK23H: The Portuguese account were written in Portuguese as expected, and so would not have had comparable circulation as that of the British. However, there have been recent translation and reviews of expedition into Africa by Duarte Pacheco Pereira and VALENTIM FERNANDES.
Attached is a screenshot of Captain Pereira's 15th century account, recognizing the presence of the Ijos or Jos as he called them then.Though some of his remarks were not complimentary, this could be attributed his strained relationship with the Ijos(Jos) as against the cordial trade partnership he had with the Benin kingdom.
This account should put to rest the notion that the Ijos were not original inhabitants of the NigerDelta.

Thank you for posting this. From my observations, I wouldn't consider this as an account of Bonny as it is dwelling more on the western Delta and it did not mention the ijo in Bonny. However, the post seems to have buried some claims.
While igbos here say Bonny people are igbos mixed with Brass people while their Kings are igbos according to Captain Crow. Some ijaw counter argument seems to be that ijaws were the ones on Bonny exclusively selling igbo slaves. When the accounts of English slave traders got submitted, the arguments for Ijaw was that the trading was during the Portuguese era. From most of the accounts submitted here, one thing seems obvious. The Europeans needed a conducive environment to trade meaning they worked with tribes that were welcoming. However, most of the post about Ijaw so far, including the one you just posted from a Portuguese background been critical of ijaws as pirates and practicing cannibalism.
real1000: Daminabo Prince Eugene▶IBANI NATION (BON).IBANI HISTORY OF GIG BOATS AND REGATTA"by Senibo Abinye Morgan Ogolo. The Ibani people of Bonny and Opobo of the Ijaw tribe have always been coastal dwellers, even prior to the founding of Okoloama (Bonny) in the 13th or 14th century. In fact the families of these Ijaw migrants and founders of the would bepowerful city states navigated by canoes through the creeks and seas of the Niger Delta up to the Imo River linings in search of a peaceful abode until they arrived Bonny well before the 15th century. The tradition of Gigi and Regatta via war canoe is held by a school of thought to be naturally thought out by the ancestors of the West African coastline dwellers through inventive ingenuity to serve commercial and military purposes based on our peculiar ecosystem, which the Ibani people are key players, bearing on mind this thought considers the prehistoric era. Notably is another school of thought of Ibani scholars, which suggests that the major influences of different European pre-historic stages affectedIbani sizes of our dugout canoes, the flamboyance is entrenched in the fleets etc. These influences ranges from the era that can be dated to between 1450 and 1550, which made the Rio Real an important trading river for the Portuguese empire ( called by the Ibani people Potokiri apu). During this Period was the first crowned Bonny King Asimini. Again the Dutch influencesof early and Mid 17th century era, and finally the very dominant trade influence of English era that can be dated from the end of 17th century into the 20th century, of which Bonny and afterwards Opobo had expanded so vast in trade and culture.A well known Ibani chronological tradition suggests that AdaBiriye of Peterside Bonny(whose descendants are in Opobo now) by the encouragement of King Asimini, ferried in flotillas of Gig, well decorated to Azuogu Ndoki in a bid to lure back Princess Edemini Kambasa the daughter of the King around 1449. This tradition suggests strongly that the Ibani people paddling heavy canoes were influenced by the portugese, who themselves were great sailors, row mates and masters. However by imperative traditions; it is suggestive that the Gig boat and Regatta in Ibani land took a dramatic turn during the reign of King Perekule (called Pepple) or captain Pepple 1704-1754; of which during the English vast influence on trade and aculturization strategies of gaining British Colonies all over the world, the British influenced the Ibani people greatly. On the visit of an English explorer James Barbot into Bonny 1699; he was met with an already influential King Perekule, who declared himself to the European as a captain of his own war canoes in his own right. At that time, Captain Boileau, Alderman Bougsty, Lord Willyby, Duke of Monmouth and Drunken Henry were already good friends of Captain Pepple (Perekule) in nurturing the European cultures to his people. By 1740 when Perekule instituted the first princely Houses in a rather English Royal Style with flags, cannons and canoe regattas etc. it was quite welcomed by the Ibani people then. Apparently canoe regatta and heavy paddling took a dramatic turn from small boats of 4 to 5 feets long paddling, to a huge economic modeled canoe, long and heavy burrow paddled by seemingly gladiators ( called Aru asawo) around the era of 1700. An example of this kind of paddle can be seen in Queens town Opobo today by the tomb of an Opobo nobleman called Ada Aritom, who fought the Bonny civil war of the Annie Pepples and Manilla Pepples 1869, and imagine how big those canoes would had been.By the memoir of Captain Crow 1792, a vivid description of our Ibani war Canoe ceremonial gigi was made:“Bonny has long been celebrated for the size and construction of her canoes, and those of the King deserve notice. They are formed out of a single log of the capot, a species of cotton tree, which attains so enormous a size, that it is said that one was seen at Akim, which ten men could scarcely grasp. The canoes in general use, have about fifteen paddles on a side; but those of the king, which are superior vessels of the sort, carry besides the rowers, as many as a hundred and fifty warriors, well furnished with small arms” .Therefore evidently, the Nwaotam regatta of every 31st of December in Opobo is just a natural adoption of who we really are; and the displays during installations of the Amayanabo or war canoe house chiefs.Captain Crow also gave a clear description of Ibani war Canoe Regatta 1792:“As at Bonny guns are mounted in the bows of their war canoes, which are full of armed warriors; and when they startoff, with Bangees (likely the seven ekere and Agaama) or drum beating, and colours flying, they present the appearance of an armament with which it would be no child’s work to cope”( cit.3p.276)Imperatively therefore, from the accounts of captain crow, regattas and war canoes as exciting as it might appear, havealways not been a child’s play at all. It very well depict the gallant valor a chieftain who most times sits or stands in the war canoe possesses, his economic power, material and military condor. Canoe regatta and war canoes have always been a play for men of valor and prowess. Apparently by 1792 Bonny during the reign of King Opubo, it had become a traditional norm and prerequisite to becoming a country chief or owning a co-perative canoe Household. Such chieftain must gear up a war canoe if he is to bear the ama alabo status, which normally will escort flotillas of Gigs to the hinterlands. By these canoes our numerous wars were fought in Bonny and out of Bonny. Even at Opobo the expeditions on the Ibibios and Anangs of Akwas were carried out by King Jaja and his chiefs via fully armed Ibani type war canoes. The English tradition of trade very well influenced this art greatly; as war canoe houses formation were linked not only to trade and domain (polo or Biri) as in European co-peratives or agency. For instance the major agent of king Jaja was Alex miller Bros. Company. The war canoe House also owned their own logo or seal of authority which was engraved on the hoisted flag of such House. This also by British style was to show power of attorney, autonomy and finally a regal display of identification.Apart from these already mentioned British influence on the Ibani Gigis and war canoes( Omu aru),each of them bore a name and like English Royal Boats are Personified. For instance, the King Opubo Annie Pepple of Bonny personal war canoe Boat ‘QUEENI’ , that was launched for King Opubo by his father King Perekule (Pepple) by 1740 back in Bonny, was handed over to Ada Madu, to Ada Alali, toAda Iloli, then to Ada Juwo Juwo (Jaja); while King Jajas’ Personal war canoe Boat is ‘Asu Jecki’(Jajas’ Horse) .In 1869. Chief Wogu Dappa war canoe Boat a crescendo of Prince Dappu Pepple of Bonny called ‘OKPANI’; Annie Stewart Pepple or Kiepirima war canoe Boat called ‘OBUKU SIAGHARI’; Chief Obulu( Ogolo) Annie Pepple war canoe Boat called ‘BOA’ or ‘ABOA’; Chief Oko Sunju Minima war canoe Boat called ‘IKASI’; while the personal war canoe Boat of Prince Fredrick Sunday Jaja is Called ‘OBI JECKI’, so on and so forth.Consequently, civil wars, military and trade expeditions were all embarked on by the use of war canoe Boats of the component unit Houses that make up Opobo Kingdom; in fact it was one seeming statutory military tool to dominate our neighboring communities. The war canoes Presupposes the existence of a war Canoe House, as it became a criteria to launch a war canoe House since from our ancient Bonny.Apparently in Opobo kingdom, having sixty seven war canoe Houses, means ability to marshal out sixty seven war canoe Boats, fully geared with men of war, or otherwise sixty seven flotillas of Ceremonial Gigs at any time of its need; and all of them must be marshaled out in order of traditional statutory position. In the ranks and filing of Ibani war canoe boats in Opobo, the head House (king Jaja), must be first.followed by Ogolo war canoe boat, followed by Kiepirima war canoe boat, followed by Sam Annie Pepple war canoe boat, then Agba Fubara war canoe boat and followed by other main H

Wow!!! Weldone guys. I am proud of the new findings here. As at yesterday, I came to a conclusion that Opobo Kingdom was named after a Bonny King and that seems to have been confirmed. From my studies, King Opobo reigned after Pepple, before Jaja took charge in Bonny and he probably had so much respect for King Opobo to have named his new territory Opobo.
Guys, while we really appreciate your great contributions. This is not really an Igbo archeological findings thread. Let us not derail this thread(It is going to be a reference sometime in the future). You can consider creating another one for that purpose. Interestingly, the truth has come to bare. No amount of laying murderous ambush trying to eliminate natives and trying to usurp their God-given language will erase the ancestory of a people. You can kill as many as you have done and try destroying historical landmarks but carefully kept historical documents are beyond your murderous reach.
Tell IYC someone is bold enough to challenge their claims.
Alabo7978: Funny to you, you think I am purely ijo, but I am Nembe. In ijo, we do not see ourselves as ijo and even most times we fight and quarell amongst ourselves. Many Nembeians have some reasons to dislike the ijo, and ijo will have reason to dislike the Nembe man. Go motor pack for bayelsa Dem dey fight, and we Nembeians mock their intonations because they pronounce jump as zump. While them they see us as proud and usually wealthy. Same with Greece, all the city states like Athens, Sparta, Crete, Corinth ,aegena, Argos , Rhodes quarell within themselves and live by there city states but when Xerxes of Persia came, they knew they were together GREEKS at large.
Though we fight and argue amongst ourselves and call each other names but when there is a foreign invasion, like the Greeks we will stand and repel, then after we will continue with our malice. You bkayy, Ekealterego SlayerForever Igboid biafrarep etc are all foreign Invaders. I even carefully searched on baikie works, and he links Bonny to the other ijoh clans. You see the resemblance with all other ijo counting?
Even the screenshot showed igbos were a secondary language. Even this screenshot talked about the German doctor. (Read carefully this time) I won't stress myself again to pick out points. The igbos have been known to walk up and down and not staying in their place. In ijo land I am a Nembe man, and if an ijoh man annoys me, I go burst him head, but when an ijo man is bullied by a foreign Invaders or when a foreign Invaders bullies any other clan, we all we assemble. That is the beauty of we the ijo Ethnic nation!

Would you by chance be interested in a live debate on this topic? We could fix a suitable date, find a suitable medium and host so we could thrash this conversation once and for all. 2 or 3 persons from both sides of the argument.
Eastlink: @OP please make corrections to the bolded. I just went through it and saw the mistake. The two Chiefs that shared power then were Asimini & Halliday. I’ll keep time to post a link here. It's actually a detailed history written by an English historian that will blow your minds away.
The topics covered were the following.
Kingship system. Bonny practiced gentocracy - Okpara system where elders led the people. It was the British who introduced Kingship system in Bonny. This brought rivalry between houses and two leading figures began their rivalry from there. Chief Haliday vs Chief Asimini. Haliday was senior and was calm in disposition. Asimini on the other hand was rash and dictatorial.
Haliday began the systemic rise of Bonny who dwelled on salt trading and farm goods with Ndoki in the Imo river into deal in stuffs like slavery. However, during these period Bonny was at war with her neighbours like Kalabari and Andoni. They needed a strong leader and by virtue of his military might Asmini led victorious battles against Andoni and Kalabari.
On returning to Bonny he took power from Haliday and exiled him. It took the intervention of the British who appealed to Asimini to relax the banishment and bring him back home.
Asimini was the first true King of Bonny and reformed Bonny house system from an indigenous blood kindred system into a military system called Wari. Asimini borrowed q lot of cultural system from Kalabari who were the strongest clan then. It was Asimini who began the idea of using slaves to fight in battle with freeborns. He was the first to free slaves who proved themselves worthy in battle and gave them a war canoe house of theirs.
Religious system Bonny practiced the same religious system as those in Igboland. The Iguana cult similar to that in Aboh and sourcing divination from Aro priest who visited Bonny occasionally for cleansing.
I would be interested in seeing your record. However, I am certain it won't contradict mine. As my source knew what he was talking about.
There are lots of other details I didn't bother to mention. For instance, my source mentioned more than one King Pepple. I also remember now. He mentioned something about King Haliday being banished. I will look it up later. But for proper context, you may have to check the the dates of your own materials.
Ekealterego: I do not think he minced words when he said he was Igbo. He even stated the name of his village which can still be found in Delta state, present-day Anioma. He said "Benin Kingdom", meaning that Benin probably received royalties and tax from that area and therefore would be the right administrative term to explain the area. Let us assume he meant Benin. Are Igbo people not born outside of Igboland?
Please, stop wasting time and energy on that guy. His plans are obvious. This thread isn't about Equiano(The same one whose Breeche background connected to my post here). This is about Bonny and Opobo. I am shocked that till this moment I haven't seen one single counter literature, just ONE. If anything this thread has shown that there is an obvious attempt at revisionism and it is extending to Obollo. Akwa-ibom people should be put on notice. They better stay woke. Already, my Akwa-ibom friend said there are parts of the coast they cannot access currently because of the ijaws. Someone should put the government on notice.
With this thread, It is my hope that every true born Bonny or Opobo man would take a close and critical look in the mirror and start asking pertinent questions.
Questions like: Who am I ? Who were my ancestors? Am I really who I have been told to say I am? What if I am not who I have been told I am? Why do I feel different? Why do I share the same cultural traits with some people and not others? What really happened during the Bonny civil war? What happened in Bonny and Opobo during the Nigerian civil war? Why am I being made to learn another local language? Is there a hidden agenda? What does historical records say about my proud ancestors? etc
Thank you for taking out such enormous amount of time to put up that post. While it may have been informative to some people. It didn't really do much for me for certain reasons.
Let me quickly point out that your headline is misleading for the content you dished out. For someone from Bonny or Opobo, you did not provide any insight. You just came up and declared Bonny is of a mixly owned heritage and Opobo is purely igbo. How? On whose authority. You also came up with an academic write up about the Portuguese era in Africa(without going into details) and in the same breath you are talking about King Jaja of Opobo who was born centuries later.
My post in the other thread were not mere conjectures from my fantasies or folktales I was told. The reason for even starting that thread was to discover/prove why there are native igbos (via language and culture) in Bonny and Opobo yet some of them are always made to believe that they are ijaws or at worse were descendants of freed igbo slaves the ijaws were trading in. To help give context to why Bonny and Opobo seem to be the only post slavery port where the natives speak a dialect of the igbo language. A language that was being taught in schools in these places until the civil war. I was trying to make sense of why the people of Bonny and Opobo are being subjected to the arduous task of acquiring a second native language by compulsion.
My reference which seems to be one of the oldest was from the Memoirs of a British Captain named Hugh Crow of Liverpool. His record was not a mere academic exercise or an attempt to fill up historical gaps. It was a record of a man who came, saw and conquered Bonny for over a decade. He went into atomic details of what life was like in Bonny of 200 years ago. He painstakingly documented the people he met and did business with for about 10 years. Their culture and tradition, their world view, their believe and religion, physique including complexion, their attitude/character including their demeanor. He specified some of their common names. He wrote a dictionary of their language. He documented their healthcare system, marriage, funeral etc. He talked about the ethnic identity of the Kings he transacted business with, the natives he met and there national symbols or identity. He mentioned the people who own slaves and gave an instance of how one could become a slave.
After reading his account of over 300 pages, I couldn't ask for more. Crow was a man who knew what he was talking about.
I came to a conclusion(which I won't repeat here) on the identity of Bonny and Opobo people based on that literature which several other kind people have supported with other literatures and not even one has countered the assertions he made.
In that thread we made sure all and every outlandish claim had a supporting literature.
So I am still trying to understand what question(s) this thread is trying to answer.
Be kind to provide readers with the details (name and date) of whatever literature you reference.
Thanks.
P.S: I do not hold or bear any grudges with anyone based on whichever the side of the debate you pick on and I am open to further learning on the original thread as this would be my last post on this thread.
warripekin: So far on this peace of history, igbo's have proven themselves. It is evidently clear ijaws are recent people in Bony and Opopo. Strange enough, the few Bony/ Opopo persons I know like the ogolo's , jombo's and even Jaja's have never admitted they are Ijaw. Any way , the Ijaws are known across the Niger Delta as land grabbers. That was how they suddenly woke up in Warri in the late nineties and started fighting over Itsekiri lands . Even in Bomadi, Sagbama and Warri south west LGA , they succeeded in laying claims to some of the communities there , whereas they are minorities in these places. I have much to talk about Ijaws in Delta and Bayelsa, but I guess this not the right place. So far , Igbo's 100 - ijaws 0.
Some of those igbos are actually been made to deny their heritage by distorting their history(that is why it is important to pull out all this records). Telling them they were slaves ijaws were trading and most people have bought into the bull crap. The remaining ones are been intimidated to change their identity. The last attempt is to force them to change their language.
I actually saw a YouTube video where the current King of Opobo was saying he was ijaw(the ijaw boy running the youtube channel won't allow you make any reasonable comment). The same King that was taken to the Supreme court by ijaw revisionists who wanted to ascend Jaja's thrown(some years after his father's death) before he defeated them at the Supreme Court.
When I heard him say it I laughed and I wouldn't really blame him because I can imagine the enormous pressure he is under. I wish someone close to him sees this and show it to him. I would have asked him just three questions if it was a life programme. The questions would go like this. Me: Your highness, is the Great Jaja from Amaigbo?
Me: Your highness, are you a direct descendant of the Great Jaja of Opobo?
Me: Your highness you just said you are ijaw and a direct descendant of the Great Jaja. How is your tribe different from your father's acclaimed tribe. Is Opobo/Ibani culture matrilinear(that is assuming his own mother was ijaw)?
In which case,I put it to you that you are either not a direct descendant of Jaja or The Great Jaja of Opobo is not from Amaigbo.
Even if he doesn't believe Great Jaja of Opobo was an igbo man from Amaigbo. A host of Opobo people are igbos.
Someone should show King Jaja of Opobo Crow's memoir so he can unlearn the falsehoods he has been made to internalize because if I was his opponent and had interest in the stool, I will simply take him to court and tell him he can't be Jaja's son and be ijaw.
Putindbutt: If ijaws weren't documented, some ibo posters here wouldn't have fun of ijaws being called "pirates" as was documented by earlier account. If your claim to Bonny ownership would make you close minded to documented facts about the ijos who were recorded as coastal traders with the Portuguese long before the arrival of the British. I suppose you are doing to yourself a huge intellectual disservice.
Why not help improve our learning experience by posting this or referencing it. The write up that referred to ijaws as pirates was later than 1809 when trans Atlantic slave trade had been abolished.
Omanambala: Do you actually believe the Ijaw that had no mention in 1700s or a proper homeland , actually enslaved the Igbo ?? You can't possibly be very bright.
This is akin to saying black Americans were enslaving the red Indians in the 1300s and 1400s. It's absolutely impossible because you don't have the intelligence (Aro were reputed to be very intelligent group) nor the ideas of shrewd Aro merchant.
I have read people assign Ijaw to European ship workers used as laborers in their exploration , but I have another hypothesis; and that is that Ijaw were never ship laborers brought from Ghana and Sierra Leone , but a minute , creek dwelling primitive tribe without homeland who barely started living on land after the British arrived , and suddenly the thought of a better life than living in the disease infested creeks crept into their minds . My hypothesis also hint when Ijaw started living on the land that's when the mixing with tribes who occupied these areas of lands closest to the waters ensued. It doesn't really take a rocket scientist to figure this out. The proof is there Okrika , Kalabari were people chiefly by Igbo race.
My hypothesis were emboldened by the fact that when the Whiteman arrived the shores of Niger Delta , it seems , the wealthy merchants and high chiefs they met on the ground none of them were Ijaw. It's either they are Igbo or a mixture of Igbo and Cross River and Ibibbio groups. Not much were said about Ijaw , in these accounts , even , until recently, Ijaw was largely unknown.
I strongly believe, however , that these towns in these coast line were originally Igbo or Akwa/Cross , who started receiving Ijaw migrants after the Whiteman arrived. These emigrants from the creek became assimilated by the earlier settlers and also brought their own influence , hence the Ijaw cultural features in these places. Subsequently , the Ijaw will come to claim these places as their land after Goodluck Jonathan became the President and his people suddenly realized they have been sleeping.
You are on point. An extensive research needs to be conducted on the true identity of the ijaws. Considering the recent description of their identity, I now have course to believe they were not the Brass people Crow talked about. Chief Fubara in Crow's account maybe one of the earliest ijaws who sneaked into Bonny with a false pretense typical of the people described to start ambushing Bonny natives.
Since they were not on the scene wayback. It is important to find out when the murderous exploit of replacing tribes through canoe attack started taking place.
I am still challenging anyone of them to a live debate on the identity of Bonny and Opobo people. The person should come ready with all those Perekule on Wikipedia.
