Nairaland GeneralRE: Opobo, Bonny- Do Igbos Live On Water? by 9Pluto(op): 10:31pm On May 17, 2024
Attached below is a historical document to correct the propaganda from revisionists.

Opobo people were break out from Bonny led by fearsome Jaja.
They are mainly Ndoki people who first settled in Okoloma.
Their beautiful dialect and folklore attests to their real heritage.
The Ofo na Ogu justice system is testament to who their ancestors were.

In spite of the genocide by Adaka Boro led gang who master-minded the massacre that painted the Opobo river red with the blood of Ubani people, no amount of revisionism will alter the identity of ancient Umu Ubani.

Nairaland GeneralRE: Jaja Of Opobo- Can A Slave Found The Land Of His Masters by 9Pluto(op):
It is obvious that unrelenting revisionists keep spreading malicious propaganda about the most famous 19th century King in the Niger Delta.

I will drop this few notes and make a full post later.

1. Jaja an Isuama Igbo arrived Bonny at age 12 around 1821. This was centuries after Bonny was already founded by the Ubani speaking Ndoki people led by Alagbariye. Around 1890 an Igbo King Pepple commemorate his father's burial(an ancient Igbo tradition) and an Elephant was gifted to him from the hinterland on that occasion(this underscores the significance of Elephant tusk 'ofo' in Igbo cosmology used by both Ubani Kings in Bonny and Opobo).

2. Decades later Jaja had become a man in Bonny under the leadership of another Igbo man named Madu. When war broke out in Bonny between the 2 major houses around 1868/9, the prosecutors of that war were Igbos mainly the Aro and their Abam accomplice(where were the Ijaws?)

3. When Jaja founded his Opobo Dynasty/Estate, THERE WAS NO Ijaw there, rather he was accompanied by friends and supporters to settle in Opobo. The Opobo idea was his clever means of averting imminent defeat in Bonny.
While Bonny and Opobo later went to war, more persons from Bonny defected to Opobo. At a point in time during the war, Jaja and his Aro complice were capturing an average of 100 men from Bonny to Opobo to be cannibalized.

4. While Jaja reign in Opobo, his army was made of the Aro, Abam, Ohafia etc. Jaja was an adherent of the Ibini Ukpabi and he defended it.

5. Till death, he was known as an Igbo chief by his European contacts.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

i.) A 12 years old Igbo boy cannot be an effective slave to any one and would have adopted the Ijaw language after he ditched his Isuama Igbo since he was very young and impressionable. A look at the attached imaged does not portray the image of a slave in the 19th century.

ii.) Jaja founded Opobo as a FREEMAN/WARLORD so the Jaja family has the exclusive Kingship right to the Opobo throne.

What trade? Palm oil trade or slave trade?

I dare you to post at least one pre-colonial document between 1800 to 1900 that associated Bonny identity with any other group apart from Igbo/brass.
PoliticsRe: The Truth About The Opobo And Igbo Language Saga. by 9Pluto(m): 10:14am On May 01, 2023
Patrioticbreed9:
The L2 language of opobo after english is igbo, in Nkoro the l2 is an abua version of ibani. Note:ibani is not a standard language, i have a feeling it is extinct! The ibani spoken in finima in bonny is an anglicalized kalabari. Infact many abuans are claiming that what the opobo(nkoro) speak is abua and what bonny(fanime) speak is kalabari, But how is that posible when opobo and bonny ibani are same people? the real ibani is extinct!. So in a bid to some re-ijoidize theirself they adopted their neighboring eastern ijaw language, apart from fanime in bonny am yet to see an opobian that speak fluent ibani without ading pigin eg preye abeg do! saki'ofori.
Igbo language is dominant as an l2 in both opobo and bonny till date, reasons are due to slave trade and inter-mariage. The ubanis are igbos(ndoki) and the urantas are mixed(ibani-ndoki) while senibos are ijaws.
For me the place igbo language ought to be ban is nkoro because of the reason some of them speak igbo was to do busines in opobo .
L1 should be the correct classification not L2. L1 is the native tongue they grew up with.
The Igbo language has been the language of Ubani (Bonny and Opobo) origin. Bonny was originally made up of Ndoki Igbo and Brass tribes.
All relevant historical data confirms this claim. A people's language is part of their culture, it's part of who they are. You can't wish it away overnight.

PoliticsHow A Civilized Country Should Not Conduct Elections 2023. by 9Pluto(op): 7:58pm On Feb 27, 2023
The 2023 election has come and it is almost over. About 400 billion has been expended and precious lives lost.

As someone who has witnessed and participated several elections in Nigeria, I believe the INEC owes Nigerians an unreserved apology for wasting tax payers money.

INEC’s conduct of this election is a reflection of the fact that they either do not understand the challenges of the Nigerian election or they decided to collude intentionally.

The introduction of BVAS was a master stroke in this election, unfortunately it has been rendered impotent. The use of BVAS is the reason why we aren’t seeing exaggerated number of voters.
Opposition parties can easily challenge election results by requesting for the BVAS documented number of accredited voters in each polling unit and compare it with what INEC presents at the collation centers. Any PU that has a higher number of voters than what the BVAS records must be discarded.

By not being firm on instances of Voters disenfranchisement due to intimidation or violence occasioned by party thugs in collusion with security agencies the commission inadvertently endorses and encourages this criminality.

The worst disservice the commission has done in this election is in their refusal to instantly upload election results at the polling units. This singular action rendered the use of BVAS absolutely useless and a waste of tax payers money.
Aggrieved political parties should collate their own unit by unit results and take up their cases at the courts.
They should also insist of cancellations of elections and rescheduling in places where there were voter intimidation.

The election was marred by:

Late arrival of INEC officials

Voter intimidation, violence against voters sometimes in collusion with security agents.

Failure to upload results in real-time

Political interference from state governments and other political actors.

Going forward INEC should make it possible to thumbprint on the BVAS or any alternate device and save cost on worthless ballot papers.

PoliticsRe: Peter Obi, The North Await Your Kano Visit. by 9Pluto(m): 7:50pm On Aug 15, 2022
Shettibosss:
PETER OBI, THE NORTH AWAITS YOUR AUGUST VISIT ~ Mallam Umar Dan Kano.

I could remember that Peter Obi came to power on the 17th March 2006 while the famous Onitsha crisis, which led to the killings of Northerners, occurred on the 21st and 22nd day of February 2006. That was almost a month gap.

Our first meeting with Obi also coincided with his first visit to the town; all arrangements were done to receive the first citizen of the state and also to explain our predicament to him at that moment. As refugees in Army Barrack Onitsha, we took him from the barrack round to the affected areas of the crisis such as Bida Road central to see some houses burnt within the area, and then to Oba of yoruba house and palace that was razed down along sokoto and ifejika streets, then down to bridge head market by the express, where all Northern markets were burnt down. There alone, more than 100 lives were lost and properties worth billions destroyed.

The following businesses were destroyed and burnt completely .

1. Goat Market ( Northerners )
2. Cola market (Which comprised of North and Western interest)
3.Beans and Rice Market (Northerners )
4. Onions Market (Northerners )
5. Vegetables oils (Northerners )
6. Arewa parks which comprises of Maiduguri, Bauchi, Gombe, Sokoto ,Yola, Kano, Mubi and many Northern states.
7. Osogbo park (Yorubas)

But to our greatest surprise, the first thing that came out of Peter Obi's mouth was, "you people should tell your people to also stop killing our people in the North." It was like a bomb! Everyone was shocked We couldn't believe a whole Chief Executive Officer of a state who should be for everybody, a "Governor so to say, could utter such a disgusting and an intolerant statement in the public! We all were disappointed and dispersed without even murmuring a word. Peter Obi sent a chill down our spines!

The rest was history; Peter Obi didn't even feel any pity for the lives lost nor the properties destroyed, not to talk of giving out any form of relief materials or compensation of any sort to the biggest community of settlers in the state.

Secondly, at a point in his Administration, Peter Obi decided to eject and takeover those markets mentioned earlier from the Northerners. These are markets which the Northerners had been in possession since 1974 when they were relocated from Ochanja market by the then military government. The Hausa community, thereby, rejected his moves to take them over without any provision or replacement for their original place of business.

To our surprise, Governor Peter Obi ordered the deployment of Military men, who invaded the market and took no prisoners. They shot and killed 7 (Seven) innocent market men among the protesters.

It's not easy to suddenly lose our places of income and sources of living without any replacement. So, we petitioned the matter to the office of the Sultan of Sokoto who in response sent two Emirs, that of Suleja and the Etsu of Nupe, to appease him, but even all that brought no fruitful solution. The governor stood his ground and refused to provide an alternative land for the Markets.

Eventually, his Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, had to visit the governor to beg on our behalf solely for him to provide another place for the continuation of our businesses, but 'the almighty' Peter Obi refused to change position all because we are NORTHERNERS not IGBOS.

Because we are Northerners, Obi felt we didn't deserve a land for our businesses in Anambra State. In fact, in one of our meeting with him he openly said to us and I quote, "you people are foreigners here, therefore you have no right to our land" - a clear case of an intolerant leader. Obi's discrimination and hatred to us clearly defined him as a bigot to the core. Peter Obi forgot that a day like today will come when he will need northerners for his political ambition, he forgot that there are over a Million Igbos of Anambra state origin who are scattered all over the North living comfortably with their families and businesses. So, for Obi's insensitivity and high-handedness, all the traders relocated to Asaba with their families and businesses.

NOW TELL ME, How would Peter Obi treat Northerners if he is elected the President of Nigeria? WORST OF IT ALL, Peter Obi said emphatically that he hated seeing Hausas at the point of entering of Anambra state from Delta state. What a bigot!!

Thirdly, towards the tail end of Peter Obi's administration which coincided with the anniversary of the creation of Anambra state, we were invited by the organizers of the program who is an igbo lady residing in the North. But while making a point on the need to foster unity among Nigerians and suggested that an exchange program should be established where young people from the state should be send to Kano in Exchange for Kano Young Vocational trainees, Peter Obi quickly took over the microphone and said, there is no comparison between the North and the East not to talk of sharing skills and knowledge. He also added that such comparison is like asking China to come to Nigeria to learn Manufacturing business. He made this assertion in the public and I could remember it was the then governor of River state, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, that chaired the occasion.

Moreover, sometimes in 2018, an Igbo Bar man in Niger drive GRA Onitsha invited a Hausa Man to be selling Suya meat in front of his bar just to attract more customers to his business. The distance of the bar is about 300 metres away from Peter Obi's house, but to our greatest shock, Peter Obi invited DSS from Awka to forcibly eject the Hausa Man from the place. His offence - he was a Hausa Man from the North who should not be seen in the GRA. It took the intervention of the landlord and Arewa leaders in the the state to stop Peter Obi from perfecting his illegal motives against the Hausa Man . It should also be of note that Peter Obi equally forcefully deported people of Northern extraction back to Kaduna during his tenure as governor of Anambra state.

Now, what will Peter Obi tell people of the North if he visits any of the Northern States during campaign? How will he be able to prove that he will be a leader for all, going by his notorious antecedent?

In view of all the above Peter Obi's divisive kind of leadership and his unprovoked notorious actions against the North and Northerners, I make bold to say that he is not worthy of a single VOTE from any patriotic Northerner ('Yan Arewa) and Westerners (Yorubas). Obi is an extremely ethnic bigot and a personality very dangerous to be trusted with the highest office of the land. No matter who Peter Obi takes as his Presidential running Mate from the North, we shouldn't trust him.

~ Mallam Umar Dan Kano.
Why are you so ashamed to mention your name? I am sure you weren't the only victim of this fiction. How about granting TV interviews?

For my whole life, I have never seen them make points about their candidate. All they do is to insult, blackmail, and threaten the people that have different opinions.

These are the questions I want them to answer, but unfortunately, I know they will disappoint and play their usual game, which is insulting.

Can you tell us and prove to us that Anambra that Peter Obi rule is the best state in Nigeria?

Are you telling us that a 61-year old man is a youth?

Now that you have faulted the two biggest parties, is Peter Obi not a product of PDP?

If Peter Obi is good at economics, why has Anambra never been among Nigeria's top ten richest states?

Tell me about 1 country in the world that became rich by only saving money and not investing it. only 1.

Do you think Peter Obi, who watched the doctors go on strike for 13 months when he was the governor of Anambra, will ever have the solution to Nigeria's problems?

Can you pray that the alcohol that Peter Obi is selling to the youths of Nigeria never departs your household?

Why has Peter Obi never for a day condemned the killings of IPOB? Don't the live people that IPOB is killing have value?

Can you boldly tell us that in Anambra, Peter Obi's rule for 8 years is better than the state that you were born in?
I wanted to honestly answer your questions until I discovered you are the typical APC crook full of propaganda. Imagine talking about Anambra state and you are posting a picture of Aba! Does Lai Muhammed have an APC masterclass where they train you guys in the act of shameless lieing and deception?

Peter Obi and Tinubu are the only ones with real life experience in governance. Atiku has never held an executive position before and would only come and be learning on the job which Nigeria cannot afford now. As for Tinubu, he is full of empty promises with nothing to offer. Him and Buhari should first deliver on what they promised Nigerians before he dares to contest any elective position.

Just a quick one, please can you explain what it means to be a good party man in Nigeria. The last time we checked politicians are just about their personal/selfish interest e.g Atiku Abubakar has left the PDP and returned twice. Infact, the last time he worked against his the PDP to campaign for Buhari in APC because he wasn't the one on the ballot. The only time Atiku has been a party man was only when he an OBJ had PDP ticket and when he is the party flag bearer. Every other time he was against the party. So I ask once again, what does it mean to be a party man?

Migration has always been part of human history.

The Jews migrated from cannan to Egypt then to cannan again. This Don't mean they are Canaanites or Egyptians.
Dear friend, source of migration is a pointer to who some of them were. Like I said earlier this explains why Okrika is linguistically different from Kalabari. It explains why some parts of Okrika were igbo speaking. Why former Kings in both Okrika and Kalabari were igbos. Ijaws migrated eastwards from the western delta, okrika migrated southwards while Kalabari migrated westwards from Calabar. There is a reason why akwa-cross tradition is found amongst the Kalabari.

My brother, I did not say that Kalabari is not ijaw. I only mentioned this in the context of some Igboid groups that deny their Igbo Nationality. I was actually asking my Igboid clans to learn from the Ijaw clans.

If you go through most of my write-ups, I have been very clear of my stand on the ethnic make up of Rivers State without emotional mix-up or bias.

If you must know, some Kalabari folks actually do deny being Ijaw because of Rivers State Politics. They would rather like to be addressed as Kalabari Ethnic Nationality instead of Ijaw Nation. You should know this if you are really from kalabari and Rivers State. There is even a popular association that opposes IYC and INC and have been advocating that IYC should be expelled for causing division in Kalabari land especially the way Bille/Udekeama Community was recognised as a separate Clan from Kalabari by IYC/INC. There is this seemly distrust brewing between the larger Ijaw and ethnic Kalabari based on internal Kalabari politics. Many Kalabari believe that the ijaws are instigating this to weaken them. I am not from there but as an ijaw nationalist yourself, I think you should look into it and get it resolved before it becomes intractable.

This is example.
Clear Reasons And Facts Why Kalabari Nation Is Not Ijaw Sub-group Not People That Came From Ijaw, But A Ethnic Group On Its Own, Despite We Are Seen As Minority In Present Day Nigeria.
Kalabari Indigenous Movement
https://www.facebook.com/page/118544505518424/search/?q=Ijaw

The good thing for now is that in spite of these local inter-clan resentments your folks will always identify as Ijaw once outside Rivers State or in a public forum with non-Ijaws. I wish our Igboid people will also learn this virtue.

Our Igbo folks in the South East do not interfere or meddle in our local inter-clan local politics and I think this is Igbo egalitarian way of life. I think it is good too. It ensures every igboid clan keep their unique identity but Nigeria and Rivers politics have long latched on these our old age quasi-independence of Igbo clans to forment trouble and bred hatred between Igboid clans and our larger Igbo family especially those outside the South East geopolitical area.
Some people say it all started after the civil war but my grandfather told that the seeds of distrust among igboid groups were planted long before the civil war. The war only offered our politcal competitors including unfortunately some people in our old Rivers the opportunity to balkanise Igboland and implant the division in order to dimmish the perceived Igbo numerical, economic and political dominance. It is a long story and please let me not bore you my friend with our story.

I fully support your determination to continue to unite your people irrespective of the artifial state boundaries and I am confident that our Igboid people will definitely bond more with our folks in other states of Nigeria as more of our people get enlightened.

I truely believe we can advocate for our different Nationalities (Ijaw and igbo) in a civilised way and with decorum as our forebears have done over the centuries of co-habitation as good neighbours in our blessed homeland.

There is an old adage that says Egbe bere Ugo bere.
It's refreshing to see your submission on these issues. Especially at a time when ignorance is rife in today's society. Considering ethnic composition of rivers state, it isn't just a case of igbo/ijaw dichotomy. Most tribes/groups today are a blend. Igbo blends are observable with Ogoni around Eleme as a group formerly known as Mboli. Andoni were originally Obollo people of today's Akwa-ibom who later had some igbo as well as ijaw elements. Okrika ancestors confirmed they migrated from Afam to their present location and today they have largely mixed up with ijaws. Kalabari/New Calabar were people who origin left Calabar(probably Efiks) axis in today's Cross River state and were led by the Aro to isiokpo before they eventually resettled in today's location. Today, there is a more ijawcentric campaign amongst them than efik/igbo.
These are some of the reasons why Okrika and Kalabari don't see themselves as same people even though IYC keep claiming them as ijaw. Most of these historical facts are well documented, unfortunately we do not read anymore.
Communal clashes and slavery were some of the causes of serious migration back then. A whole lots of tribal blendings occured that resulted in today's ethnic groupings.

Who said so? Is this you personal opinion? Did you do any plebiscite to determine this. You really want us to take your opinion or some few seemly misguided folks as true representative of Ali Iwhuruohna dialis'

I am not from Iwhuruohna but i have many friends from there. KELGA is not only our neighbouring LGA that speak the same dialect like me but we used to be one local government before we agitated to have a separate LGA. Our Agitation was necessitated by the believe that the military will combine other Ochie people in the then Owerri LGA to form a single LGA in Rivers or Imo. It never happened and that is why we are suffering politically today. Minority clan in Rivers and minority clan in Imo State. We even have some of our villages seeded to Ngwaland in Abia. Ochie would have been numerous as Ikwerre if we have all our kith and kin in Rivers. So you can see why I hate this politics of divide and rule.It does not help any one.

We have the same problem with some folks in Kalabari Ethnic nationality that try to deny being Ijaw but they all become Ijaw whenever they find themself at the national level. Who did this to us in the Igboid clans?

I was almost quelling with a folk from Ali Ogba the other day that specialises in coming to Nairaland denigrate the Igbos of South East and trumpet that Ogba is not Igbo. He completely forgot that a famous son of Ogba that wrote the history book for his clan was a foremost Ohaneze chieftain and Igbo union. I was flabbergasted and queried if I should take his word against that of the respected High Chief Francis Ellah of blessed memory. He is still sticking to his guns.

So coming to your quote, are you saying that you are more knowledgeable than Obi Wali, Dede Chibuike Amaechi and Dede Okwukwu? Are you more knowledgeable than the former Eze Apara Rebisi that worked hard with Zik and Ebitu Ukiwe for the creation of the new Rivers state that our Ikwerre brothers are enjoying today?
This is how you folks go along to poisoning peoples mind and bringing hatred among brothers.

I hope you do not belong to the camp in Rivers murky politics encouraging our Omuma brothers to declare an ethnic nationality to further whittle down Etchie influence just as you are mouthing a notion that would ultimately whittle down the great Ikwerre influence to a minority status. Ali Ikwerre just like Ala Ochie is one of the oldest Southern Igbo ethnic nationalities.

Just Look at Nyerisi Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike today, a respected red cap Diali just lost his VP position by his naïve flippancy of denying his Nationality to a less popular figure in Ali Igbo. Atiku is still rubbing this on Nyerisi’s wound. In his last interview, he said he has always chosen Igbos in all his political race and he did the same this time again. He chose Okowa because Okowa professes his Igboness just like Ameachi.

We can play our local politics of bantunised ethnic nationalities to share the cake in Rivers state but please do not bring those to national discuss.

By the way, It would interest you to know that my grand father used to work at the Ahoada Division at Ali Ekpeye and I know a lot about our Igboid group in Rivers State.
It is refreshing to read your write-up. I am impressed with your level of political awareness and historical knowledge. It is often pitiable to listen to most ikwerre newbies parrot their pseudo-identity devoid of historical evidence. Imagine a people who are at home with the Amadioha tradition(that is extensively practiced over a vast part of igboland) and bear it as names telling you they are not igbo. People who together with the larger owerri people became nwa diali as a way to become immune from Aro slave merchants. Up to 50% of people from today's ikwerre lga with it's headquarters named after Okpo Nwagidi an Aro leader are most likely Aro. I could go on and on.

With the current political climate getting heated up, a lot of ignorance is been peddle by several purveyors of fake news trying to market unmarketable aspirants.

The media has been awashed for weeks now about how Tinubu built Lagos. This comment isn't just an insult on the memories of men and women from across the globe who transformed Eko to the Lagos it is today since the arrival of the Portuguese.
After the developmental efforts of colonial administrators and military heads of state, Chief Lateef Jakande is one of the greatest architect of modern Lagos. A man whose landmark transformation of Lagos in terms of creating affordable housing and accessible education was devoid of greedy accumulation of public wealth for personal good.

As political jobbers are scrabbling to outdo each other over who tells the most incredible lies, this would be the best time for the descendants of this unsung hero to set the records straight.

Lagos has been Lagos for several decades before Tinubu and will continue to achieve its potentials without him. Enough of the false narratives.

This is why the bulk of federal government investment is in the north. Southern governors need to learn to attract federal investments to their states rather than using state allocation to build federal projects.

These are some of the governor I know that are guilty of the proligate waste of state resources. I wonder who their political advisers are.

Ebi2233:
That's a lie.
Go to Opobo and check their names I don't believe in online lies I believe in physical
What exactly is a lie in my comment? Do you mean those names are not Opobo names?

Ebi2233:
Its like a taboo in Bonny and Opobo to give child Igbo names
It must always be Ijaw name or highest English name can be added.

Not even their kings have Igbo name
This isn't true.
There's currently a professional footballer from Opobo who plays abroad and he bears igbo names. Uranta, Ikeokwuadighm, Epelle, Agbai etc are igbo names found in Opobo.

What does ugwumabiri mean in ijaw?
PoliticsRe: Running Mate: You’re A Betrayer Of Highest Order, Edwin Clark, Attack Okowa by 9Pluto(m): 4:23pm On Jun 17, 2022
While I believe that both PDP and APC must be voted out next year. I find it ridiculous to term Governor Ifeanyi Okowa a traitor. On what basis exactly?
There was no Southern alliance. The whole essence of zoning or power returning to the south was about equity and fairness based on which the South East deserves the shot.
In the absence of such, then it becomes a free for all.
Tinubu isn't running based on southern alliance, neither did Wike contest based on any agreement.
Therefore, Okowa should be commended and not condemn.
