I'm appealing for your post's to be precise and concise. You usually end up going off a tangent when addressing a particular subject.

One minute I'm asking the importance of my tribal identity, the next minute I'm being termed a slave, how we got to that point, I know not.

A001, in our country alone, we have more than 700 different ethnic groups. Nigeria is a place where for every 20 kilometers you walk, you see a different ethnic group with different culture. Over the years, many cultures have died off as there is more acculturation that takes place. In our quest to be united as a society, we have to sacrifice our separate identities to meld as one. Why do you think one has to fightbto maintain his cultural identity? What if i wanted to see myself more as yoruba man than an Igbo man? Will it be wrong?
You keep asking me the same questions I already answered. I've answered your questions in my earlier posts.

If you hate your culture so much that you want it to die and feel it's inferior, who am I to convince you it's not?

People promote their culture to preserve their history and heritage. But it seems you don't mind the Igbos losing their history and cultural heritage.

You hate your culture and want it to be wiped, yet it's you people that will be crying about marginalization.

How will they not marginalize you when you don't like your culture. Hating your culture is a form of self-hate.

If you denigrate your culture, outsiders will agree with you and call it evil. They're indirectly calling you an evil person because your culture is your identity whether you like it or not.

The English culture you're promoting today is because the English people don't denigrate their culture. They promote it.

But the African man thinks he's uncivilized when he promotes his indigenous culture because the whitemen say so. SMH.

Even if you adopt the English culture, that culture is also your identity.

You can't do without a culture and its importance is self-evident.

Okay, very good that you've started being a bit specific, now you mentioned language being a key part of culture.
Now remember that my first question was; as an Igbo man, why is my Igbo identity important? You've replied that culture is as important as breathing, it's something we can't do without, that If I'm not igbo, then I'm definitely adopting another person's language.

To which I will now ask you, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT??
I mean, I imagine that Nigerians having a common language like English, even though it's not any of our indigenous language, has been much better for all of us, I mean here we are, both communicating, speaking and writing in English and being better for it, our cultural identity (language) playing zero roll whatsoever.

I mean, many cultures have been lost to time and we (the human race) are still waxing strong.
Is anything wrong with all of humanity losing the very different aspects of culture and adopting a unifying culture or identity??

I imagine that many normal abroadians here have entirely adopted their new culture and have shed most of their old cultural identity and are thriving because of this. They speak the language of their host country, they eat the meals that are indigenous to their host country, they dress in the attire of their host country, I mean for the most part, they've shed all shreds of their African identity and I ask you, is anything wrong with that?
This your comment is why it's clear most are still under the British rule.

It seems you see being a slave or being colonized as something to be proud of. Many countries, including GB itself, were once colonized in the past by more powerful empires, but they strove hard to break free from colonial rule.

After gaining independence, these countries built their systems of education and religion and adopted their native language as their primary mode of communication and English as secondary (for non-English countries).

This shows the people have evolved enough intelligence to develop their education, religion, and language without using those imposed on them by the colonial masters.

If you want a country to develop, they must own their systems of education, religion, and language, not merely adopting the ones imposed on them by their masters.

These are the basic things that determine if a country develops or not. Because innovation, creativity, leadership are all in the head.

And it takes many intelligent people for a country to develop.

It will take a lot of intelligence to revamp the education sector and restructure the country.

But they must be done for the country to prosper.

You use local solutions to solve local problems, not adopt foreign solutions (tools of colonial masters) which makes you their slave.

It's clear the Western education system has failed in this part of the world. If our leaders were serious, they would have designed a better system of education since by incorporating teaching STEM in mother tongue using local examples.

If many Ibos reason like this, your culture will soon be wiped out from the face of Earth.

You'll lose your history and heritage. When your culture dies, you've become a slave to other cultures or owned by other cultures.

It seems there's something about being African that makes them love being enslaved or colonized.

About those abroad, I know many people that are still proud of their culture and contribute their quota to preserving it.

Don't generalize hastily. It's not everyone that worships the English culture, which isn't better than our local cultures.

Nigeria's problems are deep and severe.

The Muslims want the whole Nigeria to adopt Arabic being the language of Allah, who says he's God in Qur'an.

The Christians want the whole Nigeria to adopt the ways of the Israelites because Yahweh is the only true God.

You, an atheist who should know better, want the whole Nigeria to do away with their local cultures and adopt English culture and language.

You need to find a more reasonable reason to justify your neocolonialism campaign for the whites.

This is how some Africans aided the whites in looting the resources of their own people and land, in enslaving their own kith and kin.

Here you're displaying the same attitude that has brought Nigeria into such a deep mess.

Do people learn from history at all?

This is too broad and theoretical.

I'm asking you to be more specific about the advantages of me upholding Igbo culture.

What is the advantage of me having an Igbo identity?
Please note that I'm very specific about my tribe here? You could also answer using your own tribe as the example if it suits your answer better.
What's the advantage of you breathing? Have you seen any human that survives without breathing?

Just like no man can survive without breathing air, no one can also survive without having a culture.

You need need a culture (specifically language, one of the elements of culture) to interact with others, and if you don't interact with others, you can't survive alone.

You mentioned the advantages for you as an Igbo man. The basic needs of humans are the same across various cultures and races around the world: food, shelter, air and water.

Without interacting with others using a language, you can't get these basic needs whether you're Igbo, Yoruba, English, or Arab.

Please answer me this in few words.
What are the advantages of upholding traditional cultures? As for me, I'm a liberal, which means I advocate for constant change, progress and upheaval to the status quo. I always think we should strive for better change, but I digress.

Back to my question, can you tell me tge advantages of me being an Igbo man? What do you think being Igbo means to Igbo people? What are the benefits of being Igbo? Why should I maintain my identity as an Igbo man?
You want the Igbo tribe and culture to die? If you don't uphold your native culture, it'll die.

Do you want that to happen? If many Igbo people behave like that, the Igbo culture will soon die a natural death.

You can't do without a culture. If you feel otherwise, show me a man without a culture?

Even if you discard the Igbo culture, you'd still adopt another culture which will most likely be a Western culture.

You uphold your culture for self-preservation and self-determination of your people.

To function well in a society, everyone needs some sort of programming, which is what cultures are.

But there are bad programs (bad aspects of a culture) in all cultures that people should condemn.

And one should learn to learn, unlearn, and relearn to get rid of any bad programs they got from the social conditioning of culture.

It's not realistic to say that people should do away with culture.

It's like saying a person should stop breathing, that they would survive without air.

It's simply impossible. Your culture is your identity. It's what defines your personality, whether you like it or not.

Nairaland is such a funny place. Type culture or What's culture? on Google and learn first.

Learn first before arguing. As I said before, religion is one of the major elements of culture. Culture is an umbrella term for language, belief systems or religion, norms, values, and customs of a people.

Maybe you got your definition from the same ignorant people that say Allah = Olohun = Yahweh = Ohomorihi.

Its ignorance and also irritating to think Islam is an Arab religion and as such, it is their culture. Islam is never an Arabian religion. It is a religion that have been existing before the Saudis. So, roping it with their cultures and condeming Muslims for it is wrong and rejected.

Religion (belief systems), language, customs, values, and norms are the key elements of culture.

Check the definition of culture in a standard dictionary or a standard book of sociology or anthropology.

Do that as an assignment and check the various definition of culture given by experts in that field.

Someone is confusing Arabic ( as a language ) to a equivalent translation of it in local dialect.

Let me help you small. Its obvious you are confused.

If come = " wa" in yoruba = vee in ebira

Then God = olunwa in yoruba = ohomorihi in ebira.

Where is pagan ascription here?

Ways of which individual worships this God differ as such prompt names they give to it. For example, when I supplicate in Arabic, I make use of Allah but when I do same using my local dialect, I use ohomorihi.

When pegan or traditionists suplicate or worship in my dialect, they make use of adayi ebeba or ihineba. So what is hard here to understand that you are confusing your confusionhuh

Anybody that understands Arabic language knows that God is the same as Allah = eledumare or olunwa. But when you decide to used it to mean your pagan gods, it surely do not change what it means.

Lastly, Arabs have names they give to their pegans that differentiate it from name given to God in Arabic.
I just skimmed through this post because it lacks substance.

You obviously don't know the history of your people in Kogi. Your post is full of nonsense.

Learn your history first; oh, that's haram in Islam because you'd have to interact with pagans in your community.

You're allowed to learn the history of the Arabs through the religion of Islam but are forbidden from learning yours because it reeks of paganism.

Those pagans you look down on are much wiser and mentally stronger than you, who's a slave.

If not for them, the whole Nigeria will have become the property of the whites and the Arabs because people that are mentally weak like you wouldn't mind if the whole Nigeria becomes Muslims.

I know that's one of your prayers. You want the Arabic culture to wipe out the local cultures.

You think culture is real? That shit is human construct, its a human design to invoke and impose some shit on us. .... The shit has done more harm than good. So, I ask, what is the essence of doing such thing to the extend of promoting it?

Me, I don't see you as igbo, hausa or yoruba or European first, I see you as a human first and everything other thing is secondary!
Tell me where I said culture is real. I already said that it's a social construct earlier, just like the religion of Islam you cherish the most.

Some early humans designed all these things. Like culture, religion is also mental programming.

You're condemning the local culture (the entire culture) while celebrating the Arabic culture as a Muslim. Can you see you're a big hypocrite?

You slam your head on the floor five times daily in reverence for the Arabic culture; the religion of Islam is a key aspect of the culture of Arabs because religion is one of the key elements of culture.

Yet, you're condemning the local culture, which has both good and bad sides, like the Arabic culture as well.

Your argument would have made sense if you don't celebrate and haven't adopted the foreign culture of the Arabs being their slave.

You can't do without a culture. It's either you follow the local culture (the good aspects in them) because that's your identity or you follow the culture of the Arabs being their slave.

If everyone behaves like you, your language and culture would have died long ago. If a person's culture is dead, the people have also died because the name of their ethnic will be wiped out and replaced with a new culture they've adopted.

Culture has many advantages, one of which is the preservation of the thoughts, history, and belief systems of a people.

Your argument lacks merit because you've adopted the Arabic culture and regularly condemn and demonize the local culture the way a typical Muslim does.

The Arabs are just wiser than the typical African (who's weak mentally) being that most of them don't joke with Islam, a key aspect of their culture.

The foolish one will call his own culture devilish because the white or Arab man says so in the book of lies they regard as holy.

But the wise whiteman and Arab won't tolerate slandering or condemning of their cultures.

The slavemasters uphold their culture but the slaves condemn theirs. Well, there's a reason why they happily bear Abdul (slave) anyway.

They would say Abdullah (slave of Allah) but Allah, just like the other gods of religion, don't play any part in the activities of this planet.

Humans do all things. So, invariably someone that happily bears Abdullah is in reality a slave of the Arabs.

That concept- Culture, is an illusion, I mean, it's never exist, It's a human design, it's a human construct to show their societal characters to us. They just tacitly add language in their definitions.

When I did that course in 100 level,( Nigeria people and their culture) I nearly cried. Thank God I managed to pass it. I cannot see myself studying shits that is not adding up nor is it making sense.
You and the guy you quoted are not being realistic. Have you seen a human without a culture?

You exhibit your culture in all things you do. When you hate and condemn your culture, you're condemning and hating on yourself.

The world will treat you the way you treat yourself. If you say your culture is evil and barbaric, that makes you a barbaric and evil person because you can't do without a culture.

If you hype the good aspects of your culture, others will also respect you.

What you're doing is just to condemn the whole culture because of its bad elements.

You don't throw the baby away with the bath water.

All cultures have good and bad sides. I'm sure as a Muslim, you celebrate and uphold the culture of the Arabs being their slave.

The Arabic culture that you celebrate and revere also has its bad sides, just like all cultures of the world.

It's typical of the Muslims and Christians to condemn and demonize their culture while promoting foreign cultures.

If the Europeans and Arabs are as weak mentally as the average African man, you won't be celebrating and revering their culture.

In summary, condemn the bad aspects of your culture and promote the good ones, and stop demonizing the local culture while celebrating the Arabic culture that's even worse than our cultures in some ways.

What do you call "God" in yoruba and ebirahuh??
God is a title. Olohun Eledumare is the pagan god that our forefathers in Yorubaland used to worship before they came in contact with the Europeans and Arabs.

Ohomorihi is the pagan god that the ancestors of you, Kogi people, used to worship as God before Christianity and Islam.

Allah is the native god of the Arabs. Yahweh is the local god of the Israelites. Olohun, Ohomorihi and the remaining native gods in this part of the world don't have an English translation.

Esu, a Yoruba term, is Esu in English. Esu is not Satan. Because the concept of Satan is alien to the Yoruba and the African cultures.

Satan is better called elenini in Yoruba (one who opposes or antagonizes others), not Eshu.

European colonialists and Arab conquerors just twisted the cultures of the indigenous people for their hegemonic campaigns.

Olohun is Olohun in English. That's who our forefathers worshipped in the olden days.

They didn't know anyone called Allah, just like the Arabs never knew (and don't know) any entity called Olohun because Allah is native to Arabs, just like Olohun is native to Yoruba.

In Yorubaland these days, only the traditionalists worship Olohun, but Yoruba Muslims worship Allah and deceive themselves they're worshipping Olohun.

How can Olohun be the same Allah when the Arabs don't know who Olohun is. Allah is their own native god peculiar to their culture and starkly different from Olohun or Ohomorihi.

Each of these gods has a unique history, showing they're different entities.

Allah is a different entity from Olohun or Ohomorihi because Olohun and Ohomorihi are pagan gods.

Only those that don't know the history of the local gods would be calling Allah, Olohun or Ohomorihi the same entity simply because each of them claims the title of God.

It's like saying Ronaldo is the same as Messi because both claim the title of GOAT.

Anyway, all these gods people worship in religions are past beings, whether it's Allah, Olohun, Atum, Zeus, Ohomorihi and thousands of others that have been worshipped in human history.

The gods are gifted humans that had lived in the past.

Even all these local deities in Yorubaland, the likes of Ifa, Obatala, Orunmila, Osun, Ogun, Sango are past beings that had lived on Earth.

If you tell the pagans (the olorishas) that their deities were once human before they became gods, they would be deceiving themselves that they are spirits. Until you read the Odu Ifa (corpus) and start seeing how these native gods and goddesses had existed in the past on this planet as humans.

Religious people like the ATR practitioners just like to deceive themselves, treating everything with superstition.

Anyone familiar with the religious texts of the African traditionalists, Bible, Qur'an, those of ancient Egyptians (before they got conquered by Arabs) that worshipped Atum and Ra, and the religious texts of Greece when they used to worship Zeus as the chief god or God before Christianity, would easily know that all gods of religions have human-like features.

So, it's not incorrect to call them past beings because in history, humans have deified a lot of people and worshipped them as God during the dark ages.

They passed this tradition of worshipping gifted people as God from one generation to another, and over time, the history of those they deified as God gets lost or corrupted.

Then, they start saying "Yemoja is a spirit, goddess of the sea", but when they start reciting their Odu Ifa (Ifa corpus), you'd spot the human-like traits of Yemoja.

The same thing applies to Allah and the other gods of religions.

You're missing the point totally. If language of instructions isn't important in STEM, why do developed countries like France, Germany, China, Sweden, Poland teach science in their native languages?

I don't know. It seems there's something about being African that makes people reason on a lower frequency of thought.

As a human, your natural point of contact with nature is via your mother tongue. If you want to do science well, which is the study of nature, it's best done in your local language, the same medium you relate and interact with nature.

This is the primary reason why educators in First World countries teach STEM in indigenous languages (and secondarily in English).

There are many papers that have been published on this issue demonstrating why it's much better and beneficial to teach students STEM in their mother tongue.

You're not wiser than the scientists all around the world that do science in their native language.

The great scientists like Galileo, Copernicus, Einstein, Newton, Marie Curie, Leibnitz, Bose, and lots of popular physicists all did science in their mother tongue.

These great minds toed this path because it's the natural thing to do.

A001, I asked earlier. Does Islam as a religion forbid alcohol? And if it does, what is the punishment?
Yes, Islam forbids it in strong terms.

The religion forbids every intoxicant (that's the English word for Khamr, the Arabic term used in the Qur'an and haadith) that corrupts a person's state of mind as Muslims must be pure and in the right frame of mind at all times that they want to speak with Allah in prayer (Sallah).

In Sharia, alcohol, hard drugs, cigarettes are all intoxicants.

The punishment for drinking alcohol, according to Sharia, is flogging, following the Sunnah (practice) of Muslims' prophet Muhammad.

Qatar aren't really practicing Islam the way Allah and Muhammad command it. If you see someone following the faith like the predecessors of Muhammad (it's impossible for any Muslim to practice Islam like the prophet did) did, you'd shudder.

They'd appear very strange and odd to society.

Even gambling, playing football are unlawful (haram) in Islam, but Qatar is hosting the World Cup where millions will engage in gambling.

I wonder why they don't just permit drinking of alcohol because they already transgressed by hosting the tournament.

Sadly, nothing said throughout the discussion so far has penetrated your brain.
You are missing the point, replace yoruba with igbo or hausa and the message is the same, yoruba in this case is merely a reference point.

Why is it language that is the issue, not lack of adequate facilities, untrained instructors, and resources in general??
Do you think teaching stem in yoruba or igbo or hausa will make any difference with the current educational framework we have all over Nigeria?
I see you've serious issues comprehending simple statements in simple English. Better grab a textbook of English language and polish your English grammar so you can have a sharp understanding of issues.

I'd repeat what I said before: Teaching STEM in local languages using local (everyday) examples and simple demonstrations explained in the mother tongue of students will aid their understanding of scientific concepts.

In the absence of well-equipped labs, teachers should use simple demos (developed from YouTube videos and mobile apps) as teaching aids.

I've said all this before. But it seems you're suffering from chronic alexia.

Labs can't be built and developed overnight. It takes time, but incorporating indigenous language into teaching STEM can be done by any willing teacher as it's not hard or expensive to carry out.

All it requires is strong will on the part of teachers and a good understanding of the science subject to be taught.

If you understand Physics well, for instance, you can teach it in your mother tongue, which everyone flows naturally in.

I've experimented with this method before with my students when I was still teaching, and it worked.

If you can't understand this again with all I've said, then your problem is irredeemable.

Is language the major barrier to this or just the general education standard, equipments and all? If you teach in yoruba using the same facilities in place, the result will be the same.
Secondly, there's no adequate support for invention in Nigeria, you complain about brain drain, Nigerians are elsewhere all over the world making strides, the difference is facilities and resources not language.

Wait until a minority tribe in yoruba region replace "English" in your writings with "Yoruba" and it will be a no brainer grin
The truth remains that Nigeria is too diverse, you can't even achieve this state wide thoughtless of region wide or nation wide.

Lol, you are dumping a lot on the laps of language grin
I understand the need of heritage and all, but to blame Africa's lack of development on adoption of English language is laughable

At least, you end up admitting that it can't work Nationwide, for obvious reasons.
Tell me where I told you the method is for the whole Nigeria.

It seems you've serious comprehension problems. I said many times that I advocate teaching STEM in major indigenous languages.

Is Yoruba the only major language in Nigeria? You can't read and comprehend simple statements written in simple English?

Instead of using Google to get themselves educated on a topic they're ignorant about, they would be using pseudo-

How is the Yoruba language developed from roman characters or Latin characters when we never met the Romans?

Or maybe Samuel ajayi crowther went back in time when he translated the Bible into Yoruba?

The roman empire collapsed, knowledge was lost and the world went into a dark age

So I have to wonder where your the English got their knowledge from roman texts etal comes from

This is more of same pseudo intellectual pan africanist story you were touting last week

Maybe next you will tell us isaac Newton, charles Babbage, Micheal farady and Co also cribbed ancient roman texts
Lols. You don't know the history of the Yoruba language and the history of Physics and are merely arguing blindly.

Yoruba characters are Latin characters, not English characters, because the English characters themselves are Latin characters.

Get the basics right first before arguing ignorantly.

It's only on Nairaland someone like you would be posting nonsense with confidence.

Who told you Newton is the father of Physics?

Where you put Galileo, who wrote on many topics in Physics in Roman language that English people like Newton read and translated to English to learn Physics?

Physics used to be called natural philosophy and was developed by the philosophers of ancient Greece and ancient Rome.

Before you argue with me further, use Google and know the basics.

Your ignorance and arrogance is appaling.
