When we dey shout don't speak vernacular upandan, Baba Otem talk say vernacular literally means yoruba.
I no know where you see Otem for here. E be like say you like that name.

What I'm saying is what the guy has said himself. Why would Yoruba teachers (the common practice) punish students for their mother tongue (vernacular)?

They prefer students speak English most times while in school.

Only Tinubu out of the many politicians for Naija.

What is Vernacular?
Check your dico. Teachers often punish students for speaking in vernacular (Yoruba) even though it's wrong.

Nna ehn. How can someone be so confident in ignorance? When yoruba is the official language of communication in schools. The only time you hear English is when there's a teacher in class. The moment He/She leaves, everyone reverts to status quo
Yoruba is vernacular in private schools, even in public schools as well. English is the primary language, and you're seen as dull if you can't speak simple English and you converse in Yoruba most times.

Tell me why most primary and secondary students would consider their mother tongue vernacular that's punishable if you speak it. That's the general belief.

Anyway you dey yab nonsense sha, when I already said my demography is the older ones, which was why I quoted El-Rufai in my initial post.

most people in Eksu/ado ekiti and akure/owo/Ondo town/futa speaks Yoruba first lool, if you mean educated lecturers and professors I understand but most students and youths speaks Yoruba. I agree that Hausas loves their language alot but as much as I've been across the SW it's the same except from Lagos and some places in Ogun.
Okay

Pls that's not true for ekiti and Ondo especially Ondo people.... I repeat they are rooted deep in yoruba culture.

And yes I agree I shouldn't have mentioned South and North America because of TAST, but still Yoruba culture is more in Europe than any indigenous culture in the continent. The Igbos here in UK infact many of them speak Yoruba than their own language. I find it surprising that you think Yorubas don't like to speak their language or culture except from Oyo and Osun.. lol where are you based pls?
I've lived in Lagos, Osun, and Oyo, and observed their disposition toward the indigenous culture comparatively.

I've friends from Ondo and Ekiti that we schooled together.

I think the issue with language is determined by where you find yourself; the kind of people in your community.

English is the most accepted, and what everybody understands. So in a community where you have Igbos, Deltans, Efiks, Hausa, etc, the ideal language you should speak is English. Anything short of this may come out offensive, or make you the odd one.

But i don't think you should translate that to them not taking pride in adopting their language. It's mostly determined by where they live
Mostly, governors in the North address their people in Hausa. But the ones in the South, especially Yorubaland do so in English even when their audience is mainly Yorubas.

Na wetin I dey talk be that as shown by El-Rufai in that video.

This is nonsense. English is not the primary language among teenagers anywhere in Yoruba land. And before you argue unnecessarily, I lived there for 17 years.
I initially quoted a post about El-Rufai addressing some people in Hausa. Is he a teenager?

My posts are centered on the older ones.

When i told you that i have never met a Yoruba teenager that cannot speak their language, I am dead serious.

They converse in their language comfortably. Maybe not everytime, but it is much more compared to other tribes i have met.
I never said Yoruba teenagers don't speak Yoruba. But English is the primary language.

Those teenagers you said consider English as the best language in the world and a sure sign of civilization, and even the older ones too. Na wetin I dey talk be that

this is very ironic lol, pls speak for your family alone oh, no one takes their language serious as much as Yorubas... Maybe only the woke Yoruba liberals in Lagos but they are a small loud minority. There's a reason why Yoruba culture is the most famous in Europe, north America and south America.
As I said before, only Yorubas in Oyo and Osun states mainly take the Yoruba culture seriously.

Those in other states such as Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti prefer mainly conversing in English than in Yoruba and prefer the ways of the West.

The transatlantic slave trade made the Yoruba culture known in countries like Brazil, Cuba, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, Portugal, and the US. When slave trading was being practised in Africa before the 19th century, Western education hadn't been introduced Western education into Yorubaland.

Western education was introduced in Yorubaland in the 19th century by the British missionaries, after GB abolished slave-trading.

So, those Yorubas that took the Yoruba culture abroad during the slave-trading era weren't educated using the Western system of education.

Get your facts right.

You don’t need a cultural identity to socialize, you can socialize with anybody irrespective of their culture freely, you both choose to speak in pointless languages because you simply don’t want the other person to understand, so much for socialization
How do you socialize or interact with others without a means of communication? Can you share this opinion of yours without a language?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by A001: 1:48pm On Nov 19, 2022
Football is alien to Islam and the Arab culture. Traditionally and fundamentally, it's haram (unlawful) in the religion, and many Islamic scholars preach against Muslims engaging in it.

Even many erudite scholars in Saudi, the home of Islam, criticize their country's participation in it.

I believe Qatar is the erring party here.

Havertz10:
let’s go back to the dawn of time itself, was there anything like culture? Culture is a manufactured social construct that was designed to segregate people into different social circles, I could understand it’s usefulness in the past for socializing and identity but in today’s world, it’s totally unnecessary, it doesn’t serve any meaningful purpose today other than to promote division

And anybody that needs a cultural construct behind them to have a sense of self needs to grow the Bleep up.
Culture started existing when man evolved social (especially communication) skills. For example, without a language (one of the elements of culture), you can't interact with others.

And without social interactions, the society, as we know it, breaks down, and our existence will be in jeopardy.

That's why Aristotle said, "man is a social animal." No one can survive in isolation.

You need the elements of culture, which are language, norms, values, customs, and beliefs (religion), to socialize and relate with other people.

And yes, culture is a social construct. All things we humans use are one form of construct or the other, including the religion that Nigerians cherish the most.

There's no man without a culture. Have you seen one?

Which nonsense culture? How has that counterproductive concept benefited your people? The sooner you people shun stupid things like tribes and senseless social differences the better. it’s the same inherent desires that you share with Hausa, Yoruba and others, y’all want a better life for your people and for future generations, tribalism just delays pluralism of common desires.

And based on my observations, your people are very tribalistic, the sad part is that because of your limited influence in Nigeria, it’s so easy for others to use that same premise to segregate your people. Wake the Bleep up abeg.
It's unnatural to say that people should shun their culture. Cultures, as Prof Hofstede, one of the foremost anthropologists of the modern era, said, are the software of the mind.

They're mental programmings, like religion, a key aspect of culture.

You can't do without having a culture, just like you can't survive without air.

However, people should shun bad elements of the indigenous cultures and do away with those customs and beliefs replete with superstition and barbaric practices such as ritual killings, the Osu caste system, burning of so-called witches and wizards who might have some mental health issues, etc.

Well, i think that's a general issue with all tribes.

Igbos far from home don't take pride in cultures, as much as those in the East too

The same goes for the North too. My cousin has northern muslim girls in his school that don't put on Hijabs everytime.

I think it affects all, not just Yorubas
Yes, it affects all tribes.

But the Yorubas are worst. You'd agree with me that most abokis we see around in Lagos converse freely in their mother tongue, even the educated ones.

But in Lagos and those other states I mentioned earlier, 8 out of 10 Yorubas will look at you somehow for speaking in Yoruba at public events containing mostly Yorubas.

The colonial mentality has built this feeling of inferiority complex in the mind of the educated class that speaking Yoruba makes one dull and uneducated.

The average educated Yoruba will see you as intelligent when you write and speak in English correctly and unintelligent and local if you converse a lot in the mother tongue.

But communicating well in any language generally is a key sign of intelligence, not really in English in particular.

Although one thing I learned ( from observing senior programmers/coders)is that practicing everything is important. If you continuously practice all the language you know( both the ones u need and don't), whenever you forget, simply go to GitHub and you will be surprised how quick you remember what to do. It is a programmers Lifesaver.

Its always good to start from the basic and when you feel comfortable then move to move complex ones

You wont become a guru from freecodecamp but at least it can be a starting point that will trigger your interest
Yes, it helped a lot to know the basics. But I was disillusioned to think programming was a piece of cake when I started with Freecodecamp, until I went deeper in the software engineering course and saw shege

Coding is really complex like some concepts in advanced math, though less difficult than Quantum Mechanics.
