Was interviewed by a white guy, can't recall his window number, I was the second person he interviewed, the first was approved, she was representing her coy for a music stuff.

Me: Good morning
Vo: Pass me your documents

Me: Good morning and I passed them.
Vo: Good morning and how are you.

Me: Fine

Vo: Where are you going to?
Me: Texas A&M University

Vo: Tell me about your Educational Background.

Me: I studied Environmental Technology at the Federal University of Technology.

Vo: I see, you graduated in 2012, what have you been doing since then.

Me: Currently, I am working with ***** as the Environment, Occupational Health, and Safety Officer.

Vo: What do you plan to do after studies.

Me: I am coming back to my present employers

Vo: Are you on study leave?

Me: Not at the moment, the process would be finalized on the approval of my visa and I have a 'no objection letter' from them here (I tried making a move to bring it out).

Vo: Don't worry keep your documents

Vo: Did you apply to just this school?

Me: No, I applied to Eastern Illinois Uni, University of San Francisco, and Tamuk

Vo: What is the similarity between these schools?

Me: The three schools posses great pro-environmental initiatives; EIU possess a biomass research center which generates power for the whole school while Tamuk has an institute of sustainable energy and the environment... Kind of cuts me off

Vo: why Tamuk-

Me: Sincerely sir, ( I didn't believe I had to say this), it is because of the Institute of sustainable energy and the environment which is dedicated to research and innovation in the field of Air Quality, sustainable energy, water resources, and Environmental Sustainability. Sir, you can agree with me that these are the current environment all challenges we face in Nigeria and even in the world at large, Tamuk has a Javelina sustainability community (didn't even explain the significance) and I was also offered an out-of-state tuition waiver... I forgot to mention the relevance of some of the courses on the curriculum to the current global environmental challenges.

Vo: Did you do any tests?

Me: Yes sir... I did the GRE (306) and TOEFL (102).

Vo: are you with your score sheet? let me see it.

Me: presented both GRE and TOEFL, he looked at the GRE alone.

Who would be paying: I got an out of state tuition waiver and my mum would ... cuts me off

VO: yeah... Your out of state is just 1/3rd, who would pay the rest?

Me: my mum

Vo: What does she do?

Me: she's the school administrator of ****** and she's into real estate (it is an estate account).

Vo: Is she the owner of the school?

Me: No, she is in charge of running it ( I forgot to mention the organisation that owns it)

Vo: Do you have her account statement?

Me Yes, here it is.

Vo: Who is Dr. *****

Me: My late dad, my mum currently runs the account.

Vo: you would be picking your visa at the circled location.

Me: thank you, sir.

I thank God for success...

Hi All,

For a single working class guy, how can he prove home ties as I read in one of the previous pages that 'returning to your company' is not enough proof for home tie as the VOs know that MOST organization would not keep a position open for someone that went to study abroad.

Pls, lend your thoughts. Thank you

Please can you let us know such choices?

KDK:

My brother, I thank God for you. I like the way you researched and used the research in answering your questions. You gave very pertinent advise on dressing. We need to dress the part to show some level of seriousness. When I was there, there was a man from a big multi national oil company that has it's world HQ in Houston. This guy wore jeans and shirt yet he was coming for interview for a business meeting. I understand the casual dressing but atleast put a jacket to sort of formalise the dressing. He was refused (I am not categorically saying the dressing caused it but we should eliminate obstacles). People should please dress well. The people interviewing you are the most casual dressers but they are never dressed casually when interviewing you as a VO.

But guy, why didn't you ask her what state she is based in the US that you may come looking for her. wink

All the best bruv. Enjoy your studies in yankee and make wise choices in your future endeavours (don't be like some of us that made choices that we regret till date). God bless.

I do understand your point Ma'am. Thank you

I think the question that the VO asked was 'how did you hear about the school?'

Is it out of place to answer by saying that you heard or it was recommended by a friend who is a student there then you went ahead to make your research...?

LagosismyHome:

Friends can recommend rubbish so really that doesn't mean anything ..... a serious student even if someone tells you a school is the greatest , the word of mouth isn't enough for you to choose a school . It can be a start but never a good enough reason

A serious student would spend time researching about the school , the program , the opportunities and see if it fit.

From your transcript yes I can see the VO cut afodam247 , off so maybe he or she had planned to go more indepth
Travel / Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by aamstih: 11:41pm On May 20, 2018
What if it was actually recommended by a friend, Are you suggesting he fabricates another answer?

NYPD:

You are only going to play with your friend you are not going to study.

When ask how you heard of a school you should be able to give intelligent precise answers. Speak on how you searched for schools using Google usnews e.t.c and how you picked this school because of the rank or how they offered a specialization which you are really intrested in and no other school qas offering. Speak on the diversity, theres so much to speak on. My friend recommended it to me is just a weak crowned answer.

Stop all of this my friend bull shit... A prospective masters student should be able to make simple choices not asking a friend...

VO: why Tamuk

Me: I almost choked here... I chose Tamuk basically for two major reasons. 1. they offer a concentration in renewable energy which is in line with my career goal of being a specialist in energy 2. They now have a natural gas dept which is combined with the chemical engineering dept and spearheaded by the same director. Dr. ******** whom I called and confirmed from

MODIFIED: he asked if I took any standardised test.
Told him both GRE AND TOEFL

Congrats bro.

Hope you got an instate tuition scholarship?

Look up TAMUK.

oluwaGod:
Hello the brillant gurus of nairaland,

please i need your help, please i have done my first degree (Biochemistry - GP 2.6/4.0) and Masters degree Environmental technology GP 4.1/5.0) currently studying my Phd(Doctorate) now, but i truly want to study another MSC in environmental engineering , environmental sustenability or environmental studies related courses.

I have gotten my Toefl-IBT result already - score 90.

please my questions are these:

1. I need relatively cheap but good USA Science Graduate schools, which cheap schools do you think i could apply in USA doing an environmental related course? I thought my siblings would help take care of the school fees but i will pay from my pocket, i have kept 2million naira down now in my bank account for the fees/tuition. I will still transfer more for this purpose.

2.Can i still meet up the Fall Batch(September).

3. Since i have done my Masters already hope the VO wont wonder why masters again, well the answer is that i want a better foundation when it comes to environmental field work.

4. Are there cheap Msc Environmental courses in Maryland, Baltimore schools? as i have my sister and uncle there.

5. Do i need a GRE? (i dont want to throw away money as some schools dont need it)

Thanks alot, would appreciate quick responses as university of texas brownville i wrote just said i wont be able to join them in september as deadline has passed.

Hey guys, quick question...

My friend's brother failed to renew his Canadian student visa, even after the 3-month grace period. (i honestly don't know why he was nonchalant).

Now, the lawyer is saying the only option he has is to get married. I just want to know if all this guys mess would affect my friend - the guy's sister.

I am sure their records would show the relationship. Would it affect my friend when she wants to get her own student visa?

bigfrancis21:

From the list of STEM courses, MBA is not considered as part of STEM given that the field is saturated right now with native American professionals. STEM courses are identified areas in the US economy with dwindling American professionals hence the need to recruit foreign students to fill up these roles. Traditional MBA is not on the list because there are plenty American professionals with an MBA. However if you take specialization in courses such as Data Analytics or Technology, which is STEM recognized then you may be eligible for OPT/H1B visa sponsorship. https://www.ice.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Document/2016/stem-list.pdf

Also, according to USCIS website, “If you are currently participating in OPT based on a master’s degree in business administration but you previously received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, you may be able to apply for a STEM OPT extension based on your bachelor’s degree as long as it is from an accredited U.S. college or university and the OPT employment opportunity is directly related to your bachelor’s degree in mathematics”.

As for your friend, she most likely got into Apple by specializing in a technology course, hence the reason she may have gotten into Apple which is a Tech company. H1B sponsorship right now is very very tough. Nearly all those I know (F1 students) who went for the recent NSBE job career fair (National Society of Black Engineers) in Philadelphia were rejected for not having permanent residency. Right now, except you are very good at computer programming most STEM companies are not too willing to sponsor on H1B. For STEM international students, the 3-year OPT is a middle-ground for you to work for the company while you sort out your residency. In the past, I have seen where some companies decided to hire a student on H1B but have the student work for them on OPT while the H1B is being processed. This may be applicable to your friend as well.

Go to youtube and search for 'notefull toefl videos', the videos alongside the official ets guide for Toefl would be of tremendous help.

Bro give those guys a break! grin If they were interested in the case, Wharton wouldn't have seen his or her application. cheesy

Chidinho10:

Nice one!
MBAs from top business schools have huge ROI.
From INSEAD to London Business School to IMD, ROI is huge
I always advise that Nigerians seeking MBAs from the US should target top 20 schools. Anything below top 15 till top 20 should be with a mouth watering financial aid.
The lower the rank, the lower the prospects after GRADUATION.

You can't compare an MBA from HBS, Sloan, Ross or Tuck to an MBA from a roadside business school in the US.

If you get an MBA from HBS, Wharton and the likes, and you remain poor, the fault na from your village people.
