Crime / 7 Dead As Okada Riders Clash Over Levy In Ogun State by Ababbio: 8:25am On Aug 04, 2021
7 people are feared to have died on Tuesday, August 3, after a fight broke out between some Hausa and Yoruba motorcycle riders in Ogun State, Newspremises reports.

The violence started between the Okada riders and the union leaders.

Union leaders had increased the ticket fee from N600 to N800 and okada riders operating at the Factory junction at Ibese, Yewa North Local Government Area, objected to the hike.

This quickly degenerated into an ethnic crisis between the Hausas and the Yorubas in the area.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, August 3.

Speaking, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said that he could not confirm the number of casualties at the moment.

Oyeyemi said, “The issue is currently under control. It was a minor struggle that had snowballed into a serious crisis.

"They said the unions increased their ticket fee from N600 to N800 and that was how the crisis started. But how it then turned into Hausa and Yoruba crisis is what I don’t know.

"But, we are on top of the matter. The situation has been brought under control. Our men are still there as we speak."

Kidnapped students of Bethel Baptist High School, Damishi, Kaduna have been released by their abductors, after 20 days in captivity, Newspremises has learnt.

Kaduna state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigerian (CAN), Joseph Hayab, confirmed their release to newsmen on Sunday.

Newspremises recall that a total of 121 students were abducted from their hostels by bandits on July 5.

Hayab could not immediately confirm the number of students that were released.

It was reported that Abraham Aniya, one of the students, was rescued by security operatives alongside two other victims who were kidnapped by bandits some days ago along Kaduna-Kachia road.

“On July 12, at about 1540hrs, operatives of the command, alongside Civilian JTF on routine rescue patrol around the forest of Tsohon Gaya village, Chikun LGA of Kaduna State, stumbled on three kidnapped victims roaming the bush, extremely exhausted and weak,” Mohammed Jalige, public relations officer of Kaduna police command, had said.

Two other students escaped on July 20 when they were tasked to go and fetch firewood from a nearby forest.

Confirming the development to TheCable, Jalige had said the two students were sighted around the Rijanna area along the Kaduna-Abuja highway.

“Yes, two of the students were rescued this evening along Kaduna-Abuja highway and they are undergoing medical examination,” he told TheCable.

Travel / Air Peace Aircraft Tyre Bursts At Ilorin Airport by Ababbio: 8:31pm On Jul 24, 2021
Passengers disembark as Air Peace aircraft tyre bursts at Ilorin Airport

Sixty-six passengers and six crew onboard an Air Peace aircraft from Abuja were said to have “disembarked safely” when one of the plane’s tyres blew off after landing at the Ilorin Airport in Kwara State.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Friday at 10:30am while the B737-500 aircraft with registration number 5N-BQR was taxiing to the parking bay at the airport.

No one was reportedly injured during the incident and no life was lost.

Spokesperson for Air Peace, Stanley Olise, confirmed this to The PUNCH in a telephone chat on Saturday, adding that “as we speak, the tyre has been fixed and the aircraft has been moved from the runway.”

“Our officials reported the incident to the authorities as statutorily required,” he added.

In a follow-up statement, the airline debunked reports (not by The PUNCH) that its plane crashed at the airport.

“Our aircraft neither crashed nor crash-landed in Ilorin or in any place for that matter,” the statement partly read, adding that “Air Peace is committed to providing peaceful connectivity across cities and relentlessly observes the highest standards of safety in its operations.”

Also, the Accident Investigation Bureau, the investigating body in charge of all aviation-related accidents and incidents in Nigeria, confirmed that the incident occurred but said there was no plane crash.

AIB General Manager, Public Affairs, Tunji Oketumbi, told The PUNCH that investigators evaluated the incident and won’t be investigating it.

When asked, the AIB spokesman said, “Yes. It happened yesterday. AIB Safety investigators did an evaluation of the occurrence and decided not to investigate. The aeroplane has been released to the operator (Airpeace). The delay in opening the airport is down to the recovery of the aeroplane from the runway by FAAN (Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria) and Airpeace. The aeroplane had a burst tyre on landing.”

Recall that the tyre of an Air Peace aircraft also blew off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja in January 2019 while it was taxiing for take-off on the runway.

The incident sent the passengers on Boeing 737 aircraft, who were heading to Benin from Abuja, into panic mode but no life was lost and no one was injured.

Sports / Messi’s Barcelona Future In Huge Doubt With Club ‘unable To Register New Stars by Ababbio: 1:56pm On Jul 06, 2021
Lionel’ Messi’s future at Barcelona has been thrown into further doubt because the club cannot register new signings after already exceeding their wage cap, according to reports.

The Argentine great, 34, is currently unemployed after his contract expired on June 30. But the player is expected to sign a two-year extension at the Nou Camp, with the deal now under threat.
Barca are in financial disarray as a result of the pandemic, with debt standing at £1billion, and have been told by LaLiga to cut their annual salary to £300million from £331m.

According to Goal, the Catalan giants are operating beyond that figure – even without Messi signing on again.

The captain’s latest contract was worth a whopping £2.4m per week – or £123m per year.

But the report also adds Barcelona are not allowed to add new additions to their squad until they have made the necessary savings.

That means free signings Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, and Eric Garcia as well as £6m addition to Emerson Royal will allegedly not be officially registered with LaLiga yet.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta last week urged fans to stay calm as he looks to tie up Messi’s new deal.

He said: “We want Lionel Messi to stay and Leo wants to stay.

Members of Katsina State Peoples Democratic Party Social Media Organization have started sharpening their skills in the use of locally made catapults for self-defense against armed bandits, Newspremises reports.

The exercise is tagged "Operation Catapult Shoot".

According to the youths, the exercise is in response to Governor Aminu Ballo Masari’s directive that people of the State should defend themselves against bandits’ attacks.

Recall that Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, during the inauguration of Katsina Joint Security Operations and Communication Control Centre, said it was ridiculous that people in the state are not defending themselves against bandits’ attack.

He said, "Why should I sit in my village and be only making telephone calls without doing anything?

"Every bandit, every criminal has an address, has a location, and they are human beings like us. The only difference is that they have taken arms against us; does it mean we have nothing to take against them?"

Comrade Nuraddeen Adam Kankara Tina, the State Chairman of the Katsina State Peoples Democratic Party Social Media Organization, led other members of the social media group to launch the catapult training exercise in Katsina metropolis, in response to the State Governor's call that residents defend themselves.

He said: "We embark on the exercise in compliance with the recent directive issued by the Katsina State government and we are determined to expand the exercise across local government areas of the state".
