Politics / Gratuities: Zulum Releases N12b To Clear 4,862 Unpaid Retirees by Ababbio: 4:19pm On Dec 08, 2020
Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday announced the release of N12 billion to clear gratuities owed 4,862 retirees who left the state and local government civil service from 2013 to 2017.

Before today’s, Zulum had released N3 billion in June and September 2019, to clear gratuities of 1,684 retirees who left the civil service between 2013 to 2019, at lower ranks, mostly clerks, drivers and messengers.

Governor Zulum flagged off the payment with symbolic presentation of cheques to some retirees on Tuesday at the government house in Maiduguri.

He explained that the fund was obtained through a loan provided by the Zenith Bank.

The Governor noted that while N12 billion was not enough to settle backlog of gratuities, appreciable number of retirees almost 5,000 retirees will be cleared this time around.

He appealed to those who will not part of the N12b batch to be patient as Government is working on to settle all gratuities as soon as possible.

"The accumulated backlog of gratuities over the years has been worrisome to successive administrations.

"We are making frantic effort to settle all outstanding gratuities and pension arrears of our retired Civil servants.

"We decided to decided to take far reaching decision to reduce the waiting by retired state and local civil servants in the State. We hope this N12b will reduce poverty and stimulate the economy” Zulum said.

Speaking on issues of pension, the governor explained that from May 2019 to date, a total of 770 complaints were received out of which 650 were rectified and already enjoying their pension while awaiting their arrears to be paid soon.

Zulum also recalled that the state governmen recently completed the rehabilitation of Musa Usman Secretariat, including provision of furnitures.

The Governor also assured of his administration's commitment to sustain the payment of retirement benefits to pensioners as at when due.

Zulum announced announced that Government has commenced the automatic migration of retirees from salary to pension since May, 2020 and so far over 900 retirees have benefited from the process.

Our correspondent explained that payment of gratuities has been particularly problematic across Nigeria given the fact that, gratuities are lump sum of money which employers are lawfully required yo give retirees as reward for many years of service.

The amount mostly come in millions for each retiree to use in investment after many years of work.

Retirees are entitled to one off payment of gratuities and monthly pensions which are generated from contributions made by employees and employers during working years.

Monthly pensions are normally less of salaries workers were paid during their working years.

Politics / #EndSARS: We’ll decisively deal with hoodlums hijacking peaceful protests–Buhari by Ababbio: 7:56pm On Dec 07, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the administration’s readiness to decisively deal with hoodlums and hooligans hiding behind peaceful protests to disrupt public peace.

The President warned against disturbing public peace on Monday while virtually declaring the Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020 open from the State House in Abuja.

The President assured that his administration is still committed to ensuring that rights of Nigerians to peacefully protest are protected, he, however, added that such rights must be responsibly explored and must be in accordance with the laws of the land.

The President recounted that the #ENDSARS protests were sadly hijacked by hooligans to cause wanton damage to lives and property in many cities across the country.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, President Buhari commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their efforts at swiftly restoring law and order in various states during the large-scale criminality that ensued in the wake of the #ENDSARS protests.

The President described the Year 2020 as a very challenging one, citing the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative impact on almost every aspect of national life.

”Despite this, I am pleased to note that the Army remained resolute in the discharge of its Constitutional roles and in keeping the wealth and welfare of our soldiers a priority.

”The Army’s support of Civil Authorities in the management of the COVID – 19 Pandemic is a case in point.

”Also, the peaceful elections conducted in Edo and Ondo States would not have been achieved without the high level of professionalism displayed by all security agencies, including the Army,” he said at the conference themed “Human Capacity Development in Sustaining Professionalism and Responsiveness of the Nigerian Army in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles.”

The President commended the Army for its unwavering commitment towards curtailing the activities of insurgents, armed bandits, kidnappers, cattle rustlers and other violent criminals through ongoing exercises and operations in different parts of the country.

Notably, he said the Exercise SAHEL SANITY launched a few months ago in the North West states to rid the Katsina-Zamfara corridor of marauding bandits had recorded commendable progress.

President Buhari said he had been briefed that some of the major capabilities procured for the Army will soon be inducted into the various theatres of operations, urging personnel ‘‘to make judicious use of these capabilities, even as we await the arrival of others currently pending shipment to the country.

”I have also been briefed about the tremendous successes that have been achieved by troops during the ongoing Operation FIREBALL in the North East.

”I charge you all to sustain these efforts until the full restoration of peace and security in the nation is achieved,” the President told members of the armed forces at the conference which provides an avenue for the leadership of the Army to re-assess its preparedness and operational readiness in carrying out its Constitutional roles.

President Buhari also used the occasion to pay tribute to men and women in uniform who have paid the supreme sacrifice in the defence and security of the nation, commiserating with their families, comrades and friends.

”As we pray for the repose of their souls, we must strengthen our collective resolve to address those issues that will make every part of our country a safe and secure place to live and carry out our normal business,” he said.

He pledged that his administration will not relent in its efforts to take adequate care of families of fallen heroes who had paid the supreme sacrifice in the fight against insurgency and other forms of crimes across the country.

At the conference, the President launched the Housing scheme for Next of Kin of personnel of the Nigerian Army killed in action.

”It is in line with this that the Army as part of its welfare initiative and in line with the Federal Government’s housing programme is undertaking the Housing Scheme for families and next of kin of troops that were killed in action in the fight against insurgency and other criminalities in the country.

”I believe this initiative will act as a huge morale booster to the troops on the frontlines as well as project the Army in a good light.

”On our part, I assure you that this administration will continue to do all within available resources to provide for your operational and welfare needs,” he said.

On the choice of the theme of the annual conference, President Buhari noted that it is only through human capacity development that any institution can attain the level of professionalism needed to effectively and efficiently carry out its Constitutional roles.

The President, therefore, congratulated the Army on holding this Conference at the magnificent edifice housing the Army’s Cyber Warfare Command with its state-of-the-art Cyberwarfare Operations Centre, adding that this shows that the Army is alive to the changing nature of warfare which is gradually moving into the cyber domain.

”By the same token, I commend the visionary leadership that has worked assiduously to emplace this vital capability that will fill an existing gap in our nation’s security and defence architecture.

”This and other numerous infrastructural projects that have been embarked upon in recent times by the leadership of the Army has shown good utilization of scarce national resources,” he said.

Earlier, the Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi appreciated the President for always approving funds for operations of the military in the country, assuring that all resources will be judiciously utilised.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, noted that the Nigeria Army was well poised to confront all security challenges, which includes cyber threats.

Politics / Bashir Ahmad Denies Claims Of Huge Turn Out For #endsars Protest In Abuja by Ababbio: 7:20pm On Dec 07, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari's aide Bashir Ahmad has debunked news that huge crowd turned out for #EndSARS protest today, November 7, in Abuja, Inidensija reports.

While reacting to The Nation outlet publication Ahmad said, "the Nigeria news outlet in it editorial today, called out the CNN for fake news, now they are exactly doing the same thing, spreading an old video taken in Lagos, as today’s protest in Abuja. It’s difficult to understand what The Nation is trying to achieve for doing that, and constantly."

The Nation had earlier reported that, the second wave of #EndSARS protest in Abuja on Monday has seen a very huge turn out of protesters.

Youths in Abuja in demanding for the release of all detained protesters and unfreezing of their accounts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), took to the streets of Abuja.

Also, protesters took over streets of Ondo state calling for good governance. They accused the government of paying lip service to their demands.

This comes as the police threatened to deal with protesters ruthlessly.

Crime / #ENDSARS II: Protesters Retreat As Police, Soldiers Take Over Lagos by Ababbio: 5:34pm On Dec 07, 2020
The planned resumption of #ENDSARS protests in Lagos was Monday stalled following the heavy deployment of police and soldiers across the state, Insidenaija reports.

Organisers of the second wave of the protests early on Monday morning advised supporters to stay home following reports of police and soldiers’ presence at the Lekki Tollgate, National Stadium, Freedom Park, Ojota and other strategic locations to forestall mass gathering of people.

Although supporters of the protest had dared the police on Sunday following the latter’s statement banning any form of gathering, The Nation learnt that they developed cold feet when information started filtering in from midnight about heavy security presence across the state.

In one of the group chats on WhatsApp, some battle-ready supporters hinted as early as 7 am they were about hitting the streets to the protest venue but were advised otherwise by the admins who reminded them of the need to stay alive.

Information was subsequently syndicated through various social media platforms that supporters should stay at home until it was safe to carry placards on the streets.

They encouraged supporters to continue to agitate on social media until their demands were met including the resignations of President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai and their prosecution before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

They also demanded the release of all persons arrested during the first #ENDSARS protests across the country; release of all frozen accounts of #ENDSARS protesters; an end to insecurity and bad governance.

As the online protests continued, some mischievous persons started sharing old venues alleging protests were ongoing at Lekki Tollgate and Mushin areas of the state and urging youths to come out enmass.

Such claims were immediately fact-checked by people around the areas mentioned, just as the Lagos Police Command also described them as fake news.

A rebuttal by the police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the videos were shared to cause tension and destabilise the security network in the state.

Referring to the video of the purported Lekki Tollgate protest, Adejobi said: “The video was one of the viral videos released during the recent violent #Endsars protest before the Lekki Tollgate plaza was set ablaze by the violent protesters on October 21.

Politics / Jonathan Urges Nigerians To Support Government Efforts On Security by Ababbio: 9:54am On Dec 05, 2020
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to support the government’s fight against insecurity in order to collectively tackle the menace, Insidenaija reports.

Jonathan made the call on Friday in Abuja during the exclusive command performance by the Commonwealth Community Choir.

The choir, also known as the Port-Harcourt Male Ensemble International, was tagged ‘Peace for All Nations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

The former president said insecurity was a global phenomenon that was not peculiar to Nigeria due to the excesses of terrorists across the world.

“I was there before and of course, you know there is a lot of insecurity. All what we can do is to collectively support the government, encourage the soldiers and other security operatives to do more for our safety,” Jonathan said.

The former president said unity and peace must be collectively upheld by all especially the youth, adding that as a former President he knew the meaning of peace.

He stated that Nigerian youths sometimes engaged in all kinds of confrontation, recalling his conversation with one of his friends.

”I was discussing with one of my friends and I said look, in Nigeria, they appear not to even have a national youth body. Because in most cases, the regional youth bodies are stronger than the national youth body.

“Ordinarily, the national youth body is supposed to be stronger than the regional youth body,” Jonathan said.

The former president lauded the programme’s organisers for their efforts; “When you see young people come together to perform with the theme: ‘Peace for All Nations,’ I am quite impressed.”

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said nothing could be more important than peace.

Osinbajo, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Religious Matters, Pastor Seyi Malomo, said peace in the society was one of the invincible cement that made everything to work.

“If you remove that peace, everything will somehow collapse. So, peace cannot be coming at a more appropriate time when we are in celebration season of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who the Bible says is the Prince of Peace,” Osinbajo said.

Earlier, Onyeama said the event marked the commencement of the execution of the mandate that has been entrusted through the choir by the Commonwealth.

He said as part of its mandates, the choir was expected to undertake a global tour of the Commonwealth nations to promote peace and development through music.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has accused counterfeit news, web-based media and lopsided inclusion of the ongoing #EndSARS fights for the hanging confidence among security specialists and intensifying insecurity in the nation.

According to him, the mainstream media abandoned reportage of the protests to the social media, which in their sensationalism twisted the reports causing the country avoidable trouble.

Lamenting that the killings and brutality meted to security agents during the protests were poorly reported, he said: “Now, this is hunting all of us. Wittingly or unwittingly, we have succeeded in scaring policemen off their beats.

Today, many of them are even afraid to wear their uniform. And the result has not been pleasant, in terms of security of life and property.”

Hugs and handshakes between the opposite sex who are not married are forbidden in Islam.

However, in a photo shared online, Garba Shehu, a practising Muslim, was captured in a way that seemed he was leaning in to hug a woman though there's no actual proof of that.

Politics / Nigerian Military Reacts To Boko Haram Video Claiming Zabarmari Massacre by Ababbio: 2:58pm On Dec 03, 2020
Following Boko Haram terrorists claim that they are responsible for the massacre of innocent farmers in a rice plantation in Kwashabe village, last weekend, the Defence Headquarters has urged Nigerians not to be afraid of them.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, John Enenche, who started this while giving update on the operation of the armed forces between November 26 and December 2, on Thursday, in Abuja.

The terrorists had on Tuesday, released a video claiming that they carried out the massacre in retaliation for the arrest of one of them by the farmers.

They also claimed that the farmers had also given information on their movement in the area to the military.

Mr Enenche said the claim was the practice of the sect with the sole motive of instigating fear in the minds of the people to discourage them from cooperating with the security agencies.

He said that the information received by the military from one of the survivors revealed that the farmers were called for a meeting with the terrorists on the sad day before they were slaughtered.

“The truth is that whenever they are losing ground as a result of the military activities, this is what they resort to.

“It is a fallacy that because we killed one of them and that the farmers gave information about them; but the likelihood is wickedness.

“They want to use that to instill fear in the minds of the people because they have seen the governor trying to make sure that people return to their homes,” he said.

Mr Enenche said the claim was the usual propaganda of the terrorist, adding that it is one of their major weapons.

“Our message here to the general public is that they should not be discouraged and that we are moving forward and with your cooperation we are going to end this menace,” he said.

Mr Enenche said the military had sustained its onslaught against the terrorists through both ground and air offensives across the theatre of operation.

He said the troops had raided some of the identified hideouts of the terrorists killing scores during the week and recovered cache of arms and ammunition.
