Sports / Maradona's Body Arrives Argentinian President's Mansion, To Be Laid To Rest(pix) by Ababbio: 11:46am On Nov 26, 2020
Diego Maradona's body has arrived at the presidential palace in Argentina to lie in state as the grieving country prepares to pay its last respects to the football legend.

The Argentina icon, who was the manager of Argentinian club side Gimnasia passed away aged 60 on Wednesday, November 25, after suffering a cardiac arrest in his home country.

An autopsy report leaked to Argentine media said he died in his sleep after suffering heart failure, only two weeks after leaving hospital following surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain.

Medics also detected dilated cardiomyopathy, a medical condition in which the heart muscle becomes weakened and enlarged and cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body.

His nephew, Johnny Esposito was the last person to see him alive, according to the report, before doctors who had an appointment to see him went to his estate on Wednesday and found him unresponsive.

His last words before he died were: “I don’t feel well.”

Esposito said Maradona complained that he didn’t feel well after having breakfast on Wednesday before returning to bed in the Buenos Aires mansion.

As a crowd of weeping fans gathered outside the presidential palace on Thursday morning, Maradona's coffin was lifted out of an ambulance and brought into the palace where it will lie in state for three-day national mourning declared by the Argentinian president Alberto Fernandez.

Some fans were also pictured outside the Buenos Aires stadium where Maradona began his career setting up a makeshift shrine to celebrate Argentina's legendary number 10.

Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, was the inspiration for Argentina's World Cup success in Mexico in 1986, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.

He also led the country to the final of the 1990 tournament in Italy although his international playing career ended in shame when he failed a drug test at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

He played club football for Boca Juniors, Napoli, and Barcelona among others, and was adored by millions of fans for his football talent.

During his time with Italian side Napoli, he won the Serie A title in 1987 and 1990, along with an Italian Cup in 1987 and a Uefa Cup in 1991.

In 1999 and 2000 he was taken to hospital suffering heart problems, the second time requiring a respirator to breathe.

In 2004, he was again treated in hospital for severe heart and respiratory problems linked to his drug abuse.

He underwent two gastric bypass operations to control his weight and received treatment for alcohol abuse.

In January, he had surgery to stem bleeding in his stomach, and in July he underwent a knee operation.

Super Eagles attacker, Samuel Chukwueze can move to another league, his club boss Unai Emery has predicted, following reports of several European clubs including Real Madrid being interested in the Nigerian player’s services.

Chukwueze’s fine form has seen him linked with a reported move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Premier League outfit Everton.

He has been at Villarreal since 2017 and his contract deal is expected to expire in June 2023.

On Saturday, the 21-year-old came off the bench to win a penalty for Villarreal as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Zinedine Zidane’s side at Estadio de la Ceramica and Emery believes the fast paced winger has a bright future.

“We are very happy with Samuel Chukwueze, he’s growing up with us at this club,” Emery said in a press conference.

“His performance is getting better little by little but above all, we want to achieve with him our performance with his skills and capacity. He’s young and has a very good future but first, he’s with us trying to get better with his performances for us and the national team.

Politics / 'We Must Exit This Recession With Precision', Says Atiku by Ababbio: 9:20am On Nov 22, 2020
Former Vice-President and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general election Atiku Abubakar, has expressed worried over Nigeria's economy as the country plunged into another recession.

He made the disclosure through a series of Tweets on his verified Tweeter handle on Sunday morning, and recall that, this will be the second time in 5 years that the country will plunged into recession.

Atiku said recession could have been avoided had this administration taken heed to patriotic counsel given by myself and other well meaning Nigerians on cutting the cost of governance, saving for a rainy day, and avoiding profligate borrowing.

According to him, COVID-19 pandemic no doubt, aggravated the already bad economy situation but it could be avoided by a disciplined and prudent management of Nigeria's economy.

He said, Nigeria needs critical leadership to guide its back to the path of economic sustainability, adding that the country must act now, by taking necessary, and perhaps painful actions.

According to him: "It is with a very heavy heart that I received the confirmation that for the second time in five years, Nigeria has entered into another recession.

"Heaviness of heart, because this could have been avoided had this administration taken heed to patriotic counsel given by myself and other well meaning Nigerians on cutting the cost of governance, saving for a rainy day, and avoiding profligate borrowing.

"Yes, the COVID19 pandemic has exacerbated an already bad situation, however, we could have avoided this fate by a disciplined and prudent management of our economy.

"Be that as it may, it serves no one’s purposes to quarrel after the fact. We must focus on solutions. Nigeria needs critical leadership to guide her back to the path of economic sustainability.

"We cannot afford hand wringing and navel-gazing. We must act now, by taking necessary, and perhaps painful actions.

"For a start, the proposed 2021 budget presented to the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, 2020, is no longer tenable.

"Nigeria neither has the resources, or the need to implement such a luxury heavy budget. The nation is broke, but not broken. However, if we continue to spend lavishly, even when we do not earn commensurately, we would go from being a broke nation, to being a broken nation.

"As a matter of importance and urgency, every non essential line item in the proposed 2021 budget must be expunged.

"For the avoidance of doubt, this ought to include estacodes, non emergency travel, feeding, welfare packages, overseas training, new vehicle purchases, office upgrades, non salary allowances, etc.

"Until our economic prospects improve, Nigeria ought to exclusively focus on making budgetary proposals for essential items, which include reasonable wages and salaries, infrastructural projects, and social services (citizenry’s health, and other human development investments).

"Additionally, we have to stimulate the economy, by investing in human development, and increasing the purchasing power of the most vulnerable of our population. Only a well developed populace can generate enough economic activity for the nation to exit this recession.

"We must invest in those most likely to be impacted by the effects of the recession, the poorest of the poor. As well as stimulating the economy, this also ensures that they do not slip further into extreme poverty.

"For example, a stimulus package, in the form of monthly cash transfers of ₦5000 to be made to every bank account holder, verified by a Bank Verification Number, whose combined total deposit in the year 2019 was lower than the annual minimum wage.

"Now, how will this be funded? By more profligate borrowing? No. I propose a luxury tax on goods and services that are exclusively accessible only to the super-wealthy. A tax on the ultra wealthy to protect the extremely poor.

"A practical approach to this is to place a 15% tax on all Business and First Class tickets sold to and from Nigeria, on all luxury car imports and sales, on all private jets imports and service charges, on all jewellery imports and sales, on all designer products imported, produced or sold in Nigeria, and on all other luxury goods either manufactured, or imported into Nigeria, with the exception of goods made for export.

"The proceeds of this tax should be exclusively dedicated to a Poverty Eradication Fund, which must be managed in the same manner as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, or the Ecological Fund.

"I further propose that a 1% poverty alleviation tax should be legislated by the National Assembly on the profits of every International Oil Company operating in Nigeria, and international airlines doing business in Nigeria, which should also go towards the proposed Poverty Eradication Fund.

"It is inhumane for us as a nation to increase the cost of goods and services that affect the poor, while keeping the cost of luxuries fairly stable. We must flip this, and flip it immediately.

"And above all, Nigeria must stop borrowing for anything other than essential needs. Again, for the avoidance of doubt, borrowing to pay salaries, or to engage in White Elephant projects, is not an essential need.

"This is particularly important as we need cash at hand, because the world and our economic and development partners are also focused on helping their home economies overcome effects of COVID19. We must be our own saviours.

"The more we borrow, the more we will need cash to make interest and principal payments, and the less cash we will have to make necessary investments in our economy and our people.

"If we keep borrowing, we stand the risk of defaulting, and that will make recession a child’s play, because we will lose some of our sovereignty.

"I urge the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to swallow its pride, and accept its limitations, so that they can open their minds to ideas, without caring who the messenger is.

"For as Deng Xiaoping said “It doesn't matter whether the cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice.”

Politics / Mainland Hospital: We Are Not Allowed To Release Bodies Of #ENDSARS Protesters by Ababbio: 7:42am On Nov 22, 2020
The management of Mainland Hospital, Lagos, says it received a directive from the state Ministry of Health not to release corpses of suspected #ENDSARS protesters.

Our correspondent visited the Mainland Hospital after the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Mrs. Mojisola Dada, via a public announcement, directed relatives who had lost loved ones between October 19th and 27thto visit the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to identify and claim bodies of their loved ones.

The #ENDSARS protests had lasted between October 7th and 20th in Lagos and several other states of the federation.

While the protests lasted, relations, friends and associates of missing persons claimed their relations had either been killed or held incommunicado by security agents.

Of particular concern was the Lekki toll gate shooting of Tuesday, October 20, where peaceful #ENDSARS protesters were shot at by security agents, leading to yet-to-be ascertained number of casualties.

The shooting incident had attracted national and international outcry, with the Lagos State and Federal governments being urged to unravel the identity of the shooters and who deployed them.

The public notice by the Lagos State coroner did not, however, state if the bodies that had been scheduled for release also included those of persons who died during the #EndSARS protest.

It reads in part, “This is to notify the General Public that the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Hon Justice M. A. Dada (Mrs.) pursuant to Section 15, Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, 2015 the Pathology Team would want all those who have lost loved ones between 19th – 27th October 2020 (that is, next-of-kin of the victims) to provide relevant information that would assist the identification exercise.

“The next-of kin should kindly contact the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja for the identification exercise of the Deceased.”

When our correspondent visited the Mainland Hospital mortuary in Yaba, Lagos, on Friday, the front desk staff said there was a clear directive from the state government for dieners [morgue attendants] to release only the bodies of those who died before and after the #ENDSARS protests.

When our correspondent spoke with the Medical Director of Mainland Hospital, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, he maintained what the mortuary attendant had said.

“It is only the commissioner (of health) or even Mr. Governor that can release the body to you, Sir. So, you will have to contact him,” he said.

All efforts to reach the Commissioner of Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi; and Director, Public Affairs at the state health ministry, Mr. Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, were unsuccessful.

Politics / #EndSARS: We’re Unhappy Sanwo-olu Denied Inviting Army, General Tells Panel by Ababbio: 4:09pm On Nov 14, 2020
The Nigerian Army has said they are unhappy that, Governor Sanwo-Olu denied inviting them to Lekki tollgate on October 20, where soldiers shot at #EndSARS protesters.

Speaking before the State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the Lekki incident, on Saturday, the Commander of 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island, Lagos, Brig. Gen. Ahmed Taiwo said the army is not happy about the development.

However, General Taiwo noted that inviting the Army was the best decision the Lagos governor could have taken as the #EndSARS protest plunged the state into anarchy but added that the Army was also unhappy that Sanwo-Olu said two persons died from the military engagement at the Lekki tollgate.

“I spoke with the governor and said the Army was unhappy that he said he did not ask for Army’s intervention but I am sure that after you watched everything (video footages), you saw he had more than enough grounds to ask for Army’s intervention; perhaps it was the way everything went,” he said.

Recall that, Governor Sanwo-Olu in his live broadcast after #Lekki shooting denied inviting the military to disperse protesters at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, blaming the attack on force beyond his control.

But the Army Headquarters subsequently said in a statement that the Lagos State government invited the soldiers to the protest ground and that the soldiers acted within the rules of engagement.

The Lagos governor has been under fire since the incident at the Lekki tollbjsgate which has been condemned by local and international civil rights organisations.

According to said woman, her husband's nephew, Blackson, alongside three other relatives allegedly battered her to stupor past Sunday on the allegation that she was a hindrance to their family, Blackson’s mother in particular.

The councilor has however denied being part of the assault on the victim, contrary to a phone conversation with Jessica Nwanyanwu, daughter to Love, who affirmed that Blackson admitted leading the beating on her mother and boasting he doesn’t regret his action.

“I was at the family home in Etche passed Sunday at about 7 pm when Blackson, along with Chukwudi Nwanyanwu, Nwachi Nwanyanwu,,, and Ruth Amadi ensnared and swooped on me.

“They said I am the problem of the family, and they started beating me. The dragged me to the other house, and locked up it up, hitting my face, all over my body. One pulled a chair and hit it on my head. When he saw blood gushing, they left me in pain.

When asked what happened? Blackson denied Love allegation saying “I don’t know anything about that matter. The person in question is my uncle’s wife anyway. I only heard something happened. I was not there.”

Crime / UPDATED: Endsars Protesters Ground Warri by Ababbio: 2:06pm On Oct 14, 2020
Hundreds of #EndSARS protesters again took to the streets in Warri and Effurun in Delta to express their outrage over the disbanded Special newly created Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit.

The youths kicked off the peaceful march at about 8am from the popular Delta Mall in Effurun Roundabout, walked through the Effurun-Warri Sapele Road, stopping at Airport, Jakpa, Enerhen and Deco Junctions before marching on to Estate Roundabout, all in Warri South and Uvwie council areas, the Nation reports.

The procession caused heavy traffic across the twin cities.

They called for an end to newly set up SWAT, which they described as just as another name for the disbanded SARS.

Some motorists, business people and pedestrians gave a nod to the movement, cheering them on.

The protesters bore placards with inscriptions such as “End Police Brutality,” Stop Killing Us,” End SWAT, End SARS,” We said EndSARS, not change them” and I am a filmmaker, I am not a fraudster. Stop harassing me,” among others.

Security operatives were also spotted monitoring the exercise.

An officer, reported to have addressed the crowd, urged them to maintain peace as they protest, assuring that’s team if policemen have been deployed to give them security.

One of the protesters, Igho Tietie, who spoke with The Nation, said Nigerians are not satisfied with the disbandment of SARS and establishment of SWAT, hence the continuous protest.

He said: “We don’t want SARS or SWAT. What is the difference? What we want is a total overhaul of the Police. We are asking for an end to Police brutality. The disbanded officers should undergo psychological treatment.

“We are also asking the Federal Government to review the salaries of these officers to what their counterparts across the world earn”.

Asked if they do not have confidence in the statements and assurances by the police hierarchy with regards to curbing excesses of its men, the protester said: “They have no regard for human lives, they have no regard for constituted authority, the laws that brought them in to work and protect lives, Nigerian lives. They are not upholding that law. Instead we at like sheep for the slaughter. Enough of that!”

Attempts by the Uvwie council chairman, Ramson Onoyake, to address the protesters at Jakpa and Airport Junctions respectively, were futile.

Education / ASUU To Call Of Strike Soon, As FG May Consider Adopting UTAS by Ababbio: 7:30am On Oct 14, 2020
The Federal Government said it might considered adopting the of University Transparency Account System (UTAS) proposed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Insidenaija reports.

Recall ASUU had previously rejected the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) presented by the Government, insisting that UTAS, should be used as alternative emoluments payment platform.

Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour made the disclosure while briefing Journalists, after a two and half close door meeting leaderships of ASUU and the Senates, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The minister noted that the alternative payment platform proposed by ASUU was home grown and worth given thorough assessment test.

“We agreed at the meeting to give required consideration to the UTAS alternative they came up with as a way of finding lasting solution to the lingering crisis over implementation of IPPIS.

“We have neither jettisoned the implementation of the IPPIS nor fully accepted UTAS .

“The level we moved to now is to subject ASUU’s scheme to integrity test and in doing so, it will be presented to users like the office of Accountant General of the Federation on Wednesday .

“After that, it will be sent to the National Information Technology Development Agency ( NITDA) and from there to the office of the National Security Adviser for second look.

“The platform is an option grown device that requires stage by stage consideration and from the looks of things is good,” he said.

Confirming the head way achieved at the meeting, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TetFund, Sen. Ahmad Baba Kaita, said that the interface had not ended, but a stage of compromise is getting closer between the two parties.

“The meeting brokered by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, among other stakeholders, achieved a lot today with agreement on the need to subject the UTAS alternative brought forward by ASUU for integrity test by all relevant departments of the government,” he said.

Meanwhile, the News Agency of Nigeria (NANS), reports that ASUU leadership refused to speak with the press as to what the outcome of the meeting was, but they were in good mood apparently due to government’s decision to consider the alternative platform.

Celebrities / 2face Idibia Reveals Why He Married Annie Idibia Out Of All Women In His Life by Ababbio: 9:37pm On Oct 13, 2020
When DJ Anyaloko....the journalist interviewing 2Face Idibia asked him why he chose to marry Annie Idibia out of all the women in his life?

He relaxed back on his sit, took a deep breathe in reflection and gently answered her with this:

“You see, Perro Adeniyi who gave birth to my first son graduated from a top UK University as a medical student and is now a doctor. She is very beautiful and intelligent from a very wealthy family”.

He continued “Sandra who gave birth to my other two kids is a dealer in expensive diamond and gold jewelries. She was already a multi-millionaire when I met her, she owns one of the most expensive houses in Banana Island. Her family too are very well to do”.

He took another deep breathe and continued “Falilat who gave birth to 2 kids for me is also a very intelligent first class Lawyer. She has worked on and won many big cases for so many wealthy men and women in this country and abroad, that’s how she made her money and she Too is very beautiful as well”.

Then with a loving gentle smile on his Face he took another deep breathe and said this “But you see Annie is from an average background like myself, we both started from nothing. She stuck by me through it all. When there was no car she hopped on bikes, took the bus and trekked with me, when there was no money or house or hit songs or or millions of albums sold or big awards and accolades, when I used to repeat just 3 sets of clothes, she would always hold my head, look into my eyes and tell me things will be fine one day. When I wasn’t handsome, she would call me her Prince Charming, when I wasn’t celebrated, she called me her KING and said she is my number one fan and to this day she still is. Even when I made it big as a musician and started misbehaving and controversies almost destroyed my career, she would go down on her knees and pray to God to show me the way and give me victory over my enemies. Now if I was still that poor boy struggling to make it like every other young chap on the streets of Lagos, do you think a Doctor, a Lawyer and a multi-millionaire business woman will want to look at me twice or even have my kids? NO. So to answer your question, I didn’t chose who had more to offer me, I chose Annie because she offered me her all when we had very little”.
