Sports / Video: Anthony Joshua Defeats Kubrat Pulev To Retain Heavyweight Title by Ababbio: 12:52am On Dec 13, 2020
Anthony Joshua did his job today in London, retaining his WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles via ninth round knockout against IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, Insidenaija reports.

Joshua (24-1, 22 KO) was cautious but sharp in this fight, doing some of what we saw in his Dec. 2019 rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr, but also opening up a bit more and throwing the power shots when he felt more comfortable. A right uppercut particularly troubled and ultimately decimated Pulev (28-2, 14 KO), who was down twice in the third round but managed to survive, until being put down two more times in the ninth.
[URL=
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKidy-PvAJA ][/url]

On the final knockdown, it seemed Pulev, 39, could have gotten up, but he took the count on his knees. He’d had enough. And though the weigh-in got loud and the fight was very chippy — both fouled plenty, Pulev throwing rabbit punches, Joshua throwing a series of late shots on breaks in retaliation — the post-fight was respectful between the two, with Pulev accepting he was the beaten man.

Joshua, at 31, continues to say he wants the biggest fights. This fight was billed as the “Road to Undisputed,” and that was touched on in the post-fight interview.

“It’s not about the opponent, it’s about the legacy and the belt,” Joshua said when asked about fighting Tyson Fury next. “If that is Tyson Fury, let it be Tyson Fury. It’s no big deal.”

It again has to be said that Joshua has a WBO mandatory due against Oleksandr Usyk, and Joshua has no intention of vacating that belt to fight Fury instead. If the WBO make that order official to come next, Joshua almost certainly will be fighting Usyk in the spring, as Usyk has repeatedly stated he will not step aside.

“We know what we have to do, starting from tomorrow, we make the Tyson Fury fight straight away,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s the biggest fight in British boxing history.”

Hearn knows very well, of course, that the Usyk mandatory looms, but he is selling hype while there’s hype to sell. You can’t blame him. He’s the salesman. But we are one fight closer to a potential undisputed heavyweight title fight either way. One domino has fallen. We’ll see where we go now.

In a bid to get the complete sum, he turned to sports betting to raise the remaining cash with what he has already.

“God!!! I’m ruined Been trying to pay up for our rent since last month but couldn’t gather the money. Out of 150k my mum and I were able to gather 94k, and we pleaded with our landlord to give us till 20th. Out of frustration with no help on sight I decided to bet with the money.”

Education / FG Lied, We Didn’t Reach Agreement To Suspend Strike Dec 9, Says ASUU by Ababbio: 5:22am On Dec 10, 2020
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has denied that it reached an agreement with the federal government to end its ongoing strike on December 9, 2020.

The Union insisted that contrary to insinuation to that effect, there was never an understanding with the government that it would suspend the over 9 months old action on the said date.

President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi in a statement made available to newsmen Wednesday night, said ASUU representatives do not have the powers to suspend or call off industrial action but must follow due process which includes transmitting the outcome of negotiations to members and National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU for further deliberations and actions.

While noting that ASUU was willing to cooperate with concerned authorities to ensure suspension of the strike once the welfare and wellbeing of ASUU members and survival of public universities were sufficiently guaranteed, he said It was a needless crisis which had happened because the government consistently failed to faithfully implement the Agreements it freely signed with the union.

In his words: “The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been inundated with enquiries on why the ongoing strike action has not been suspended. This was sequel to the widely reported claims by some government agents that all the demands of ASUU have been met and that the union agreed to suspend the strike action today, 9th December 2020. Nothing can be farther from the truth!

“To put the records straight, the Principal Officers and Trustees who constitute the core of representatives of ASUU at negotiation meetings with the government are not constitutionally empowered to suspend any strike action. Whatever comes out of an engagement with agents of the government is an offer that must be taken back to the branches through the various organs of the union.

“Views and perspectives on offers by governments are aggregated and presented to government agents as counter-offers. This trade union strategy of offer and counter-offer is continually deployed until the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU – consisting of all recognised chairpersons – finally approves what it considers an acceptable offer from the government. It is only then that any strike action by ASUU can be suspended.

“ASUU members, as stakeholders in the Nigerian University System, are equally worried and embarrassed that those in the position of authority, over the years, displayed seeming indifference to the rot and decay in Nigeria’s public universities. We think it is not too late to do a rethink. We believe if there is the will, there will be away".

Politics / Agege Pen Cinema Bridge Ready February, 2021, Sanwo-olu Assures Residents by Ababbio: 9:06pm On Dec 09, 2020
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos sate has on Wednesday, with stern assurance told residents that the long-awaited Agege Pen-Cinema overhead Bridge will fully open to vehicular movement in about eight weeks, precisely February 2021, Insidenaija reports.

Sanwo-Olu who said the project is presently at 90 percent completion, added that all civil works had already been completed on the bridge.

The overpass ascends from Oba Ogunji Road and drops at the Oke Koto axis of Agege. The bridge also opens to the old Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway through Abule Egba.

The infrastructure is expected to eliminate the discomfort currently being experienced by motorists plying Agege-Abule Egba.

Sanwo-Olu, in the company of his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State’s cabinet, went on an unscheduled inspection of the 1.7 kilometer-long bridge project site on Wednesday, assessed the level of work done so far.

Speaking to newsmen during the tour of the project site, Sanwo-Olu expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done, assuring that the bridge would be fully opened for public use next February.

He said the only work left on the bridge was turning intersection improvements at the descending part of the bridge and signalisation for ease of traffic movement.

According to the governor, “We have just finished an inspection and a walkthrough of the Agege Pen-Cinema Bridge. The level of completion of the project is around 90 percent. All the major brickwork has been done and we are left with two major deliverables, which include cleaning up the intersection and signalisation.

“There is four synchronised signalisation we are expecting to have and each must work together with the other. We are expecting that all these will be done early next year. This is in fulfillment of the promise we made that we will complete all projects abandoned. We are giving the contractor handling this project a maximum of eight weeks to attend to little snags in the project.

“By the second week in January, vehicles can move on the bridge but we may need additional four weeks to complete the signalisation, road painting, and demarcation. We are looking forward to fully hand over this project sometime in February next year.”

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government had started to consider other complementary road construction to be done on the axis to further improve traffic for commuters in the area.

The Governor said the state was in talks with the Federal Road Maintainance Agency (FERMA) to take on adjoining arterial roads, with the objective to ease the flow of traffic from the bridge down to other areas.

Addressing the ecstatic crowd of residents at the site, Sanwo-Olu urged them to be patient while the contractor puts final touches on the project

He said his administration embarked on the completion of the bridge initiated by his predecessor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, given its strategic importance to easing gridlock and improving economic activities in Agege and adjoining communities.

Foreign Affairs / Nevada Supreme Court Rejects Trump Campaign's Appeal, Affirms Biden's Win by Ababbio: 4:31pm On Dec 09, 2020
The Nevada Supreme Court on Tuesday night rejected President Trump's appeal to overturn the state's election results, affirming President-elect Joe Biden's win in the 2020 battleground.

The decision comes after a court ruled last week against the Trump campaign, stating that the president's team was unable to prove that there were fraudulent results due to malfunctions with voting devices in the state, Reuters noted.

"We also are not convinced that the district court erred in applying a burden of proof by clear and convincing evidence, as supported by the cases cited in the district court's order," Nevada's Supreme Court said in its judgment.

Trump's lawsuit in Nevada originally asserted unproven allegations that more than 61,000 people voted twice or voted and were not Nevada residents. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford (D) asked Trump's lawyer Jesse R. Binnal to provide evidence to back his claim that the state's election was "stolen," but he was unable to do so, The Washington Post reported.

"They never once presented sufficient evidence of widespread fraud. Yes, they spouted nonsense in the media. But they NEVER backed it up in court. That's why they always lost. And that's why they lost again tonight," Ford wrote on Twitter early Wednesday.

The Nevada Republican Party expressed its disappointment in the decision in a statement on Tuesday.

"We were not afforded an opportunity to write our brief or argue the case in front of the Supreme Court. Full denial of legitimate due process and appellate rights is truly unprecedented, shocking and extraordinary," the party said.

Biden won in Nevada by 33,596 votes, securing the state's six Electoral College votes. Electors are set to finalize the results of the election on Monday, with Biden garnering a total of 306 electoral votes to Trump's 232, Reuters noted.

Trump has refused to concede the election, and his campaign has been unsuccessful in multiple challenges to election results across the country.

Education / ASUU: Strike May Not End Soon As FG Says, No Promise To Pay Lecturers Salaries by Ababbio: 11:49am On Dec 09, 2020
It is possible that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may not end it ongoing strike, it embarked upon since March 23rd, soon as the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, and the leadership of the union engaged in verbal war, Insidenaija reports.

According to The Nation reports, the minister on Tuesday, December 8, faulted claims of the ASUU president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who blamed the federal government for the union's failure to call off the strike.

Prof. Ogunyemi in a telephone conversation with the PUNCH insisted that the Union will not end its strike until the Federal Government paid lecturers withheld salary, adding that the government had failed to deliver on offers made to the union.

But in his reaction, Ngige said the federal government did not promise to pay striking ASUU members before they return to the classroom.

He said: “The truth of the matter is that a ‘gentleman agreement’ was reached at the last meeting in which ASUU agreed to call off the strike before December 9, 2020."

The minister stated that ASUU began a warning strike on March 9 and went into full-blown industrial action on the 23rd of the same month over the IPPIS payment platform.
