Crime / UPDATED: Policeman Not Suicide Bomber Killed In Ebonyi Explosion – Police by Ababbio: 7:43am On May 26, 2021
Earlier thread: https://www.nairaland.com/6570440/bomb-explodes-suicide-bombers-body

The Police in Ebonyi state have debunked reports that the man who was killed in an explosion on Tuesday in Afikpo, Ebonyi State is a suicide bomber, Newspremises reports.

The Spokesperson of the Police in Ebonyi state, Loveth Odah said the victim of the blast is a Policeman on duty in the area.

She said the policeman was a Mobile Police Officer on special deployment to Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

She said the officer, Mr Idi Aminu died as a result of an accidental hand grenade explosion.

The incident which occurred opposite Amizi Amangbala Primary School in Afikpo North threw the area into panic as passersby scampered for safety.

Residents believe he was a suicide bomber but Mrs. Odah said he was an Inspector of Police.

“He mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade which was hanging on his waist with his elbow resulting in the deadly explosion,” she said.

She noted that the police officer was an operative of MOPOL 32 and not a suicide bomber as being circulated in the social media.

The spokesperson said his remains had been evacuated to a mortuary.

Mrs. Odah cleared the air on alleged accidental discharge by a police officer at Government House Abakaliki.

She pointed out that though a bullet accidentally fired from an AK-47 rifle when police officers posted to the gate were cleaning their firearms, it never hurt or killed any of them.

Sources in the Afikpo had told Reporters that the incident happened around 12 noon when the man tried to gain access into a school.

Politics / Tell Us Where Recovered Loots Are - Sultan Of Sokoto Tells FG by Ababbio: 6:50am On May 26, 2021
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III on Tuesday urged the Federal government to explain to Nigerians how much loots it had recovered and what they were being used for, Newspremises reports.

He spoke in Sokoto at the zonal dialogue with stakeholders on the National Ethics and Integrity Policy, organized by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission for the northwest zone.

The Sultan, represented by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, said keeping mute on the recovered loots would spell doom for the fight against corruption in the country.

“The government owes Nigerians an explanation, we want to know how much billions of naira was recovered from our past leaders. Where the monies are and what are they doing with them?

“This explanation is necessary considering the state of our education and other infrastructure like roads which need serious government attention,” he said

He said the founders of the Sokoto Caliphate had written many books on corruption and how it could be addressed using Islamic ways.

The Sultan urged Nigerian leaders to obtain copies of those books in order to be guided in getting to tackling corruption.

The zonal head of ICPC in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States, Ibrahim Alkali said the national ethics and integrity policy was a child of necessity as “it was conceived and delivered out of the urgent need to resuscitate and rejuvenate our lost values of honesty and integrity as a nation.”

Meanwhile, Newspremises had previously reported that, the British Government has formally paid the £4,214,017.66 looted funds recovered from family members and associates of former Delta State Governor, James Ibori.

The Accountant-General, Ahmed Idris, has confirmed that the recovered Ibori loot had been paid to Delta State.

Celebrities / 'Stop Cursing My Husband, Son': Toyin Abraham Tells Lizy Anjorin In Tears(video) by Ababbio: 11:53pm On May 25, 2021
Actress Toyin Abraham broke down in tears this evening while addressing her lingering squabble with her colleague in the movie industry, Liz Anjorin, Newspremises reports.

Recall that back in September 2019, an Instagram blog reported that Liz was 'held and searched for drug peddling' during her hajj trip to Saudi Arabia. The report went on to say the actress was 'teary all through her encounter with the security agents at the airport'. In her response to the story, Liz Anjorin said her investigations revealed that her colleague, Toyin Abhram 'leaked' the story to blogs and she came for her guns blazing. Toyin at the time responded with threats to sue Liz. Read here.

Well, recently, the story came up again after Liz had an interview with social media influencer, Esabod. It appeared during the interview, Esabod reigned curses on Toyin, her husband, Kolawole Ajeyemi, and their son, Ire. This did not sit well with Toyin. She had an IG live session with Iyabo Ojo this evening May 25 where she stressed that she had nothing to do with the drug peddling story about Liz whom she said she has met just twice in her life. She swore by the bible as she insisted that she had nothing to do with the Liz Anjorin drug peddling story.

Politics / Ijaw Leader Clark Rejects Secession, Backs One Nigeria by Ababbio: 10:35pm On May 25, 2021
Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, has said that Nigeria would remain united in spite of her many challenges, Newspremises reports.

He stated this at a mass held to mark his 94th birthday anniversary in Abuja on Tuesday.

Clark, who said that he was against secession, decried the unwanted killings across the country.

“You asked me whether I support secession, the break up of Nigeria. I said if I’m to secede, where do I go to? Who owns this country more than myself? We either succeed or fail together.

“Nigeria will remain one country. My only regret is the number of killings happening in Nigeria every day.

“No personal regret, but my only regret in life is the position of Nigeria.

“There was healthy competition in the past among our leaders. We played politics without fear or favour, without any rancour, but now, it is a different thing.

“I’m appealing to everybody, let’s have one Nigeria; a united Nigeria where everybody is equal. A united Nigeria where everybody has a right to aspire to whatever position he wants to aspire to.

“A united Nigeria where religion does not determine what it should be and where ethnicity does not determine what it should be,” Clark said.

Meanwhile, Venerable Festus Nwafili of the Anglican Church, Asokoro, who officiated the mass, urged the celebrator, as a leader, to maintain his truthful disposition.

God’s expectation of you is to promote His righteous course by your words and actions. You owe the nation to speak the truth on the challenges bedeviling it,” Nwafili said.

Also speaking, Sen. Seriake Dickson (PDP-Bayelsa), described Clark as an Ijaw foremost leader.

“He is our father and we are very happy with the leadership he has given to our people.

“We are happy with his service to Nigeria. You know, he has been everything, Commissioner of Education in old Midwest, he built all the schools.

“As a matter of fact, the school I attended in Torebeni, Bayelsa, was built by him.

“And then, he became a federal commissioner for information, became a senator, became several things.

“He has been our foremost advocate, not just for the Ijaw nation, not just of the Niger Delta and the South-South, but for most, an advocate for a fair, just and equitable Nigeria.

“So, that’s what he has come to symbolise, and we are very happy with it,” said Dickson.

Politics / President Buhari Appoints Buba Marwa As DG Of NDLEA by Ababbio: 1:03pm On Jan 16, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari former military administrator of Lagos state, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as the new Director-General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Insidenaija reports.

Marwa was until recently the chairman of the presidential committee on drug abuse.

Stakeholders had hailed the work and comprehensive report of the committee under Marwa's watch.

As Lagos military administrator, Marwa is famed for introducing Operation Sweep, a security outfit that helped restore sanity and discipline to porous security in Nigeria's commercial city.

Supporters of President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress have been congratulating the Adamawa-born retired military general on his appointment via Twitter.

Others have also been commenting on the appointment with reference to Marwa's work in the past and the optimism that he will do more.

Some others stated that the appointment was borne out of nepotism, an allegation that has refused to go away concerning the Buhari administration.

Abdulazeez Salahudeen wrote:

“Great man. I pray that Allah makes it easy for him and that he implement recommendations from the committee's visitations across the country.”
Abdumalik Dauda wrote:

“I am so happy he has been appointed into this agency. We will see real change now.”
Nekka Smith wrote:

“Another strategic position of leading the NDLEA goes to Buba Marwa. Other parts of the country are not worthy of Buhari's appointments. Sectional leader, ride on!!

Politics / Armed Forces Day: Nothing To Celebrate with Insecurity, ‘elders’ Tell Buhari by Ababbio: 12:29pm On Jan 16, 2021
Nigerian elders under the auspices of the Coalition of Patriotic Nigeria Elders (COPANE), has said there was nothing to celebrate in this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, following the failure of President Muhamadu Buhari, to address the problems confronting members of the Armed Forces, especially troops in the frontline.

They insisted that the best way to have celebrated the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day would have been to sack the Service Chiefs and rejig the entire security architecture over the “worsening insecurity in the country”.

The elders in a statement, Saturday, vowed to begin massive mobilisation of Nigerians against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if it fails to immediately prevail on the president to act swiftly on the restructuring of security architecture to save the country of further misfortunes.

The statement was signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Prof. Habu Usman Galadima, National Secretary, Dr (Mrs) Grace Onanefe and Legal Adviser, Barr. Muhammad Ibrahim Postiskum, respectively.

The group observed that “the inability of pigeons to fly having been released to that effect by President Buhari during an event held yesterday in Abuja to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, was a strong indication that Nigeria was not at peace.”

According to the statement, “while we celebrate and pray for our heroes past who had served our dear country and paid the ultimate price as members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, we wish to state that there is nothing to celebrate in this year Armed Forces Remembrance Day because of the inability of Mr President to address the numerous problems confronting members of the Armed Forces alive, especially those in the frontlines.

“We observe with regret that the long and unnecessary tenure of the current service chiefs has not only affected career progression, in the Armed Forces of Nigeria today but also resulted in low morale among officers and men of the services besides other forms of setbacks. This is unconstitutional.

“The best gift Nigerians were expecting at this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day was the sack of all the Service Chiefs, followed with the appointment of younger officers with zeal and commitment to end this war,” they said in the statement.

The elders faulted the President’s speech at the event, nor noting that it failed to address insecurity threatening the country.

“We make bold to say that Nigerians were not interested in the president’s speech today because it does not address their yearnings which is the long-overdue sack of the nation’s Service Chiefs.

“The arguments by some selfish persons around Mr President that he should not change the guard during the war is the most irresponsible, misplaced, selfish and unprofessional arguments.

According to the group, that is a quack’s advice because you can’t do the same thing for five years and keep getting the same dismal results, yet, keep on as if all is well.”

In the statement, the elders argued:”Secondly, what if this current service chief are the reason why the war has refused to end?”

They faulted the president for maintaining an adamant posture in the face of various calls for the sack of the security heads and their subsequent replacement with new hands.

“It is an illusion for the president to think that he is wiser than all Nigerians in terms of security. Nobody knows it all,” they said.

“The Nigerians who are asking you to sack the Service Chiefs and restructure the security architecture are the same Nigerians that voted for you in 2015 and 2019 and maybe still be the ones to vote for your candidate and party come 2023, hence it’s dangerous to ignore them.

“The refusal of pigeons which are symbols of peace to fly during the ceremony to mark this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Abuja is a bad omen for your administration”.

According to them,” It goes to show that Nigeria is not peaceful yet. It also shows that God may be angry with this administration on the way it is handling the issue of peace and security in this country.”

“Pigeons, though are birds but they possess some spiritual elements that deliver critical updates on human lives. So, their deliberate refusal to fly was a huge sign that the right things are not being done by you in terms of peace and security.

“As elders, we are aware that several eminent Nigerians have appealed to the president both publicly and privately several times to relieve the service chiefs of their positions in the face of the dwindling security problems in the country”, the elders regretted that “yet, all have fallen on deaf ears.”

” We, however, wish to remind Mr. President that we are still in a constitutional democracy where the people’s voice is the ultimate. To this end, it is our humble appeal that Mr President listens to the voice of people by not only relieving the Service Chiefs of their positions but also restructure the entire security architecture without further delay.”

Another female patient captured in TVC’s exclusive report thanked the Lagos State Government, the State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi and the team of medical professionals for the putting up and managing the Yaba Isolation facility so well.

“I came in a very bad shape, but I am well now. So I want to let the people know and for everybody to be aware that COVID-19 is very real...........we should never stop wearing our masks whether in the bus, market or public places. We should always endeavour to do so", she said.

Friends and relatives of some patients who received care at the Yaba Isolation Centre also took to some social media platforms to commend the excellent management of cases at the facility.

One of such testimonies currently circulating on WhatsApp from an anonymous source claimed a relative received life saving treatment from the Yaba Isolation Centre.

Apparently reacting to an allegation of unprofessionalism at the centre, the source confirmed that the relative received excellent care and has since been discharged.

“I know of someone who was admitted to IDH 2 days ago...... She confirmed oxygen was freely available & bed space was on availability basis with preference for most critical & elderly,", another WhatsApp source said.
