Politics / Atiku Salutes Military Officers On Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day by Ababbio: 8:24am On Jan 15, 2021
Former Vice-president and the People Democratic Party's presidential candidate in the 2019 election Atiku Abubakar has saluted the Nigerian Army personnel on Armed Forces Day, also known as Remembrance Day, on January 15th, Insidenaija reports.

Atiku thanked them for their restless service to the defence of lives and territorial integrity of Nigerians, and prayed that the souls of the fallen heroes continue to rest in peace.

"For all that they had done and continue to do in defence of our lives and territorial integrity, on this #ArmedForcesRemembranceDay, we have every reason to #ThankASoldier. May the souls of our fallen heroes continue to rest in peace," he said.

It was formerly marked on the 11th of November every year to coincide with the Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) for the World War II veterans in the British Commonwealth of Nations, but it was changed to January 15th in Nigeria in commemoration of the surrender of Biafran troops to the Federal troops on 15th of January 1970 thus signalling the end of the Nigerian Civil War.

The day is marked with a Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph in Abuja and in the 36 state capitals. The ceremony includes a 21 gun salute, playing of the Last Post, a minute's silence, laying of wreaths and release of pigeons to symbolise peace.

In the past month Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblems have been on sale across the country. Proceeds of the sale of the remembrance emblem go to the Nigerian Legion.

US President-elect Joe Biden has appointed Nigerian-born Funmi Olorunnipa Badejo into his cabinet.

Biden had announced the appointment of Badejo, a lawyer and an alumna of Berkeley Law College in the US, when he named additional 20 members of the office of the White House counsel.

The office of White House counsel advises the president, the executive office of the president, and the White House staff on legal issues pertaining to the president and the White House.

Badejo served as ethics counsel in the same office toward the end of the Obama administration.

According to a statement on the Biden-Harris transition website, Badejo was general counsel of the house select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis which was chaired by James Clyburn, house majority whip.

“Her prior government service includes serving as Counsel for policy to the Assistant Attorney-General in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, Ethics Counsel at the White House Counsel’s Office and Attorney Advisor at the Administrative Conference of the United States during the Obama-Biden administration,” the statement read.

This was after Nigerian-born Adewale Adeyemo was announced as deputy secretary of the treasury department.

Politics / You Failed, PDP Replies Buhari Over Performance Claims by Ababbio: 7:11pm On Jan 14, 2021
The People's Democrat Party(PDP) has berates President Muhammadu Buhari for resorting to desperate face-saving media stunts in his incongruous plea to Nigerians to accept that the situation in Nigeria is better under his watch, despite the contrary harsh reality in the country

The party asserts that Mr. President’s illusory self-assessment further validates our position that he has since abandoned governance for the luxury and pleasures of Aso Presidential villa, having lost sync with the reality of the devastation his incompetent administration has brought to our nation in the last five years.
The PDP insists that every fair criticism of Buhari’s administration only reveals a litany of failures and a reversal of fortune for our country in the last five years, adding that, it is unfortunate that at a time Nigerians expected President Buhari to be remorseful for his failures and rally compatriots for solution, he is rather seeking an endorsement of his cluelessness.

How does President Buhari want an unmerited pass mark knowing that under his watch, bandits, terrorists, kidnappers and vandals, who have been pushed to the fringes before he took over in 2015, have now resurged, taking communities hostage, raping our women, beheading our compatriots and foisting a reign of terror to the extent that our nation ranked as the third country with the highest level of terrorism in 2019, after Iran and Afghanistan?

The party asserts that Mr. President’s illusory self-assessment further validates our position that he has since abandoned governance for the luxury and pleasures of Aso Presidential villa, having lost sync with the reality of the devastation his incompetent administration has brought to our nation in the last five years.

How does President Buhari sleep in the night, in the comfort of Aso villa, knowing that because of his failures, millions of Nigerians go to bed on empty stomach; that since he took over, more than 30 million businesses have crumbled; that over 60 million Nigerians...have lost their means of livelihood resulting in excruciating hardship in our country in the last five years?

It is unfortunate that President Buhari wants Nigerians to overlook the fact that he wrecked a robust economy handed over to him in 2015 with Fitch B+ rating as one of the fastest growing economy in the world and turned our nation into the world’s poverty capital and a beggar nation, that is now borrowing from all parts of the world?

Is President Buhari trivializing the pain of a nation which his administration plunged into the worst type of economic recession; where families can no longer afford their daily meals and other necessities of life; and where life has become so unbearable that compatriots now resort to suicide and slavery mission abroad as options?

Does President Buhari need to be reminded that since he took over, no less than 30 million businesses have crumbled; that over 60 million Nigerians have lost their source of livelihood; that when he took over in 2015 our naira was at N160 to a dollar but has now been weakened to almost N500 per dollar?

It is unfortunate that President Buhari wants Nigerians to forget that under him, a liter of fuel sold for N87 per liter under the PDP now sells as high as N170 to N200; that the price of staple food such as rice which sold for N10,000 per bag under the PDP now sells for N30,000; that a measure of garri which sold for N100 now sells for N350 and that a liter of palm oil which sold for N200 now sells for N600.

Our party counsels President Buhari and his handlers to note that Nigerians are already faced with the ugly realities of their misrule and cannot be beguiled by false performance claims emanating from them.

Politics / I Didn't Become Senate President In 2015 Because It Wasn't God's Time - Lawan by Ababbio: 9:04pm On Jan 12, 2021
Senate President Ahmad Lawan has explained why he didn't occupy the position in 2015, Insidenaija reports.

The number three citizen who addressed newsmen during his 62nd birthday anniversary in Abuja on Tuesday January 12, said he never occupied the position because it was not God's time.

Lawan further stated that he worked with former senate president Bukola Saraki for the good of Nigerians in spite of losing out.

In his words; “In 2015, you will recall when I wanted to be senate president, and God in his wisdom decided, No. You are not going to be. Someone else will be. Then of course senator Saraki became the president of the senate.

“We believe in God. We worked together in the senate for the benefit of our people and when in 2019, God said it is time, guess what? 109 senators have the same mindset, the same attitudinal disposition to making Nigeria better, to working with the executive arm of government for the betterment of our country."

Lawan also averred that the senate under his leadership and national assembly at large have discharged their duties very well.

“This is an opportunity for me to commend very distinguished senators for being very patriotic all through to ensure that the last one and half years of our activities in the senate, the senate has introduced so much good things into the system," he added;

Crime / COVID-19: PTF Gives Condition For Nigeria Not To Go Into Lockdown Again by Ababbio: 6:37pm On Jan 12, 2021
The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, on Tuesday, said Nigerians will determine the imposition of a fresh lockdown with their compliance or non-compliance to COVID-19 protocols amid the second wave of the pandemic, Insidenaija reports.

PTF National Coordinator, Dr Sani Aliyu, stated this while featuring on a television programme.

According to him, no decision has been taken on a fresh lockdown yet but public attitude will determine whether or not the task force would impose a fresh lockdown.

Aliyu said,

“A lockdown is not going to be decided by the PTF but it is going to be decided by the behaviour of the public when it comes to these rules. We have countries abroad that have very strict non-pharmaceutical intervention measures and everybody follows it. The flights are coming in, schools are open, churches are open and they don’t have Covid problem because everybody observes the rules.

“We definitely don’t want a lockdown and because we don’t want to lockdown, we need to make sure we do everything we can to prevent ourselves from reaching that state where the government will have to take action.”

The Federal Government had in March 2020 locked down the Federal Capital Territory as well as Lagos and Ogun States for over five weeks as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic. The lockdown had a tremendous effect on economic activities with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry putting the loss at about N3bn in the period under review.

Many jobs were also lost as airlines, hotels, banks, amongst others cut their workforce due to the crushing effect of the lockdown.

Crime / 16 Arrested As Trento Drugs Gang Smashed Nigerian Mafia Drugs In Italy by Ababbio: 6:19pm On Jan 12, 2021
Italian police on Tuesday arrested 16 people as they smashed a Nigerian mafia drugs ring in the northern city of Trento, Insidenaija reports.

Police also carried out 20 raids in the regions of Trentino, Veneto and Lombardy in the operation, codenamed 'Underground'.

Police said the gang controlled the drugs trade in Trento.

It was based, however, in the back of a Nigerian ethnic goods store in the Veneto city of Verona, police said - while the drugs were stored in another Veneto city, Vicenza.

Pushers allegedly 'commuted' to and from Trento and Verona on the train, police said.

Pushers could earn as much as 2,500 euros a day.

The drugs traffic and distribution was allegedly managed by a Nigerian woman, Agho Isoken Tina, aka Mamma T, who was allegedly assisted by her son and sister-in-law, police said.

The gang allegedly used the proceeds of prostitution, one of the Nigerian mafia's staple occupations, to buy the drugs.

Trento Flying Squad Commander Tommaso Niglio said many of the pushers were poor asylum seekers.

He said they would often swallow the doses, risking their lives, rather than face arrest.

Police seized half a kilogramme of cocaine and heroin in the bust.

Crime / 13 Soldiers Killed In Boko Haram Ambush -Report by Ababbio: 6:05pm On Jan 12, 2021
Thirteen soldiers have died in an ambush by jihadist fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province group in volatile northeastern Nigeria, two army sources told AFP on Monday, Insidenaija reports.

Heavy gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades hit a military convoy in Gazagana village, 30 kilometres (18 miles) from Yobe state capital Damaturu on Saturday.

“We lost 13 soldiers in this ambush and several were injured,” an officer said.

The Nigerian army, which tends to give far lower official figures for losses, said in a statement issued late Sunday that one of its soldiers had died and 28 jihadists had been “neutralised.”

The convoy was headed for a military base at Buni Yadi, another 20 kilometres from Damaturu, said the second army source, who gave the same death toll.

“It was a fierce battle and the terrorists also suffered casualties,” he said, without giving a figure.

The ISWAP group carries out regular attacks in Buni Yadi region on soldiers and travellers, with the violence spilling over into Borno state.

Since 2009, the jihadist campaign in northeast Nigeria has focused on Borno where the Boko Haram group is also active.

ISWAP split from Boko Haram in 2016 and rose to become a dominant group.

The violence has spread into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition to fight the militants.

At least 36,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has displaced about two million from their homes since 2009.
