PoliticsPresident Tinubu To Establish Forest Guards, Marine Police, Others by abc115(op): 10:38am On Jan 13, 2024
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a meeting in Abuja Friday with governors of the All Progressives Congress revealed his plans to rejig Nigeria's security architecture.

He mentioned three brand new police formations, to augment the regular police.

He said the deployment of forest guards was being considered, with better training, modern technological gadgets and weapons to strengthen security.

He said the solid mineral and marine economic sectors will also be secured by special police.

“We have a big marine economy, and I do not see why we should not have the marine police.

"We will have the same in solid minerals to keep the scavengers away. I am ready to invest in security".

President Tinubu also revealed his plans to stock the nation's mineral resources, in reserve.

"We will buy our own minerals and keep them in reserves, especially gold, which will be effective in our foreign exchange reserve,’’ the President told the governors.

PoliticsEmmanuelle Blatmann: I Won't Miss Nigerian Pepper Soup; It Is Too Peppery by abc115(op): 8:25am On Jan 12, 2024
The outgoing Ambassador of France to Nigeria, Ms Emmanuelle Blatmann, has said she will miss so many things about Nigeria but not the country’s pepper soup.

Blatmann disclosed this in an interview in Abuja on Thursday ahead of her departure from Nigeria.

She has been France’s Ambassador to Nigeria since October 2021 but will now be taking up a new role as the director for Africa in Paris.

The envoy said: “I will be very honest with you and blunt, I will not miss the pepper soup because it’s too peppery. You people tried to kill me several times.

“I will be eating all sorts of things with my eyes red and crying, I have smoke coming out of my ears. I am exaggerating but honestly, why do you put so much pepper? In the North, it’s better but in the South West, my God!

“But I like the jollof rice, I like the moimoi and the puff-puff.”

Blatmann however said she would miss the country’s weather, people, music and food generally.

“I will miss the climate, I will miss the love of the people, I will miss the sense of humour, the laughter, the music, the dancing, I dance a lot, I will miss a lot,” she said.

BusinessChina’s BYD Overtakes Tesla's Electric Car Sales In Last Quarter Of 2023 by abc115(op): 2:23pm On Jan 04, 2024
Backed by Warren Buffett investment, Chinese company BYD sold more electric vehicles than Elon Musk's Tesla in the last three months of 2023 as the two battled for top spot in the sector.

BYD said on Monday it had sold a record 526,000 battery-only vehicles in the final quarter of 2023.

It marked the first quarter its battery-only sales have outpaced Tesla's. The US-based firm has seen demand slow as borrowing costs climb.

However, for the whole of 2023, Mr Musk's Tesla still sold more.

On Tuesday, Tesla said it delivered a record 484,500 electric vehicles in the last three months of 2023 and 1.8 million for the year as a whole.

The end-of-year performance was better than analysts had expected, as sales rose 20% from the same period in 2022 and picked up pace from earlier in 2023. Analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities described the quarter as a "clear win" for Tesla.

But it fell short of earlier hopes. Last January, Mr Musk said that Tesla had the potential to achieve two million deliveries in 2023.

The firm cut prices repeatedly to try to woo buyers.

The milestone achieved by BYD is a reminder of the challenges facing the firm, which helped to launch the electric vehicle industry.

"As BYD has accelerated into the fast lane, it's fresh evidence of just how competitive the EV market has become and how hard it will be for Tesla to swerve back to head the pack," said Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown.

For the year as a whole, Shenzen-based BYD sold more than 3 million so-called-new energy vehicles (NEVs), which includes battery-only vehicles and hybrids.

Almost 1.6 million of its total sales were battery-only vehicles, the firm said.

BYD's chief executive Wang Chuanfu co-founded BYD with his cousin in Shenzhen in 1995.

BusinessTingo Founder Dozy Mmobuosi Charged With Securities Fraud In The U.S by abc115(op): 5:12pm On Jan 03, 2024
U.S. prosecutors have shared details of criminal charges brought against Odogwu Dozy Mmobuosi, the founder and CEO of Tingo Group, a Nasdaq-listed “agri-fintech” startup. Mmobuosi is accused of reporting hundreds of millions of dollars in fictitious revenues and assets for three companies he controls.

He is charged with conspiracy, securities fraud and making false filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The three charges carry a maximum sentence of 45 years; prosecutors say Mmobuosi is at large.

According to the indictment, Mmobuosi “orchestrated a scheme to enrich himself by falsely representing that Nigerian companies he founded, Tingo Mobile and Tingo Foods, were operational, profitable businesses generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, respectively.”

In 2022, Tingo Group reported that it had cash and cash equivalent of $461.7 million for the fiscal year. Investigations showed that its bank accounts held less than $50 in total.

Mmobuosi propped up his businesses in interviews over the years and, in 2021, told one publication that Tingo had 12 million users and a valuation of $6.3 billion. He told several publications about plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange by 2021.

In reality, Tingo was listed on the Nasdaq after a series of reverse mergers allegedly based on fake financials. Getting listed on the Nasdaq gave Mmobuosi and his companies access to US investors and capital. The U.S. prosecutors say he was able to siphon an estimated $16 million from Tingo Group.

The house of cards, propped up by grand claims, was short-lived. A report by Hinderburg Research, the infamous American short seller, soon called Tingo’s financials and operations into question, branding it a fraud of massive proportions.

On December 18, the SEC announced an investigation into the company, suspending trading in Tingo’s shares. Two days later, Dozy Mmobuosi temporarily stepped down

BusinessTraders Count Losses As Police Demolish Computer Village POWA Complex by abc115(op): 7:51am On Jan 02, 2024
Traders at the Police Officers’ Wives Association Shopping Complex in the Computer Village, Ikeja area of Lagos counted their losses following the demolition of the complex on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that demolition took place in the early hours of Sunday with armed security operatives supervising the operation.

The Chairman, Computer Dealer Association, in Computer Village, Tayo Shittu, said the demolition began around 12 am.

Shittu said, “Around 12 am, I was called that about 300 policemen had stormed our plaza with up to three bulldozers that they were bringing down our plaza. The whole plaza, Phase 1 and 2, has been brought down. We are talking of about 300 shops, more than 1000 occupants. In some shops, we have two, three or five people.

“We are not feeling good at all. A lot of our members have travelled for the Christmas holidays. If at all it was supposed to happen, there must be a roundtable discussion. They just came suddenly and brought everything down.”

A shop owner, identified simply as Emeka, who also spoke with PUNCH Metro, said traders lost valuable goods to the demolition.

Emeka said, “Goods including air conditioning systems, inverters, solar panels, burglary, and laptops were taken away. They used hammers to break in and collected valuables before they started breaking. As we moved around here, we could not find some of the things we left. Two months ago, the Lagos State Government came here and collected taxes from all of us but the appreciation they could show us for electing them and paying our taxes is to come and demolish our businesses. Many people working under us are out of jobs. They are sending another set of Lagosians to the IDP camps.”

“We came here by 7:30 am and they were still here, surrounding the area from under the bridge.”

Another shop owner, Omobayo Azeez, said, “Around 12 am on Sunday, over 200 heavily armed police officers stormed the place. According to eyewitnesses, they blocked all entrances to the place and sent away anyone around.”

Traders at the complex in Computer Village had last week sought the intervention of the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following rumoured plans to demolish the POWA Plaza.

The traders, who deal in computer and information technology gadgets at the Phases I and II of the complex, lamented that about 1,000 occupants would lose their means of livelihood if the plaza was demolished.

They claimed that some officials of the Lagos State Government with armed policemen allegedly stormed the plaza on Thursday afternoon, to give them a 24-hour deadline to vacate the over 300 shops in the POWA complex.

When our correspondent visited the plaza on Friday, it was observed that the vacation order was boldly pasted at the main gate of the POWA complex.

The vacation order with the inscription ‘Lagos State Task Force, Governor’s Office’ indicated that the traders were expected to vacate the plaza within 24 hours.

The Lagos State Government in a statement on its official X handle, @followlasg, on Sunday evening, said the government “has nothing to do with the demolition at the Computer Village in Ikeja. The structure is owned by the Police Officers Wives Association, which ordered its demolition.”

The statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, further read, “Those circulating the fake news that Lagos State Government is demolishing Computer Village are opportunistic ethnic chauvinists who will always relish in vacuous propaganda that can fuel their fiendish mission; they will always fail in dividing Lagosians.”

Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sanwo-Olu, could not be reached for comments on Sunday as his line was busy and a text message sent to him was not responded to.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Task Force, Raheem Gbadeyanka, when contacted, said he did not have the facts of the incident yet.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, did not also take his calls nor respond to messages sent to him.

However, Adejobi had in a Saturday statement said there was no going back in the demolition of the building.

Adejobi said, “It has become imperative to properly establish that the complex, a property of the Nigeria Police Officers’ Wives Association, which is officially allocated to wives of police officers and their relatives, has been scheduled for demolition.

“This is to enable the Force to commence immediate construction of a modern shopping complex on the same land.”

Foreign AffairsUkrainian Shelling Kills 21 Russian Civilians, Russia Says by abc115(op): 10:17am On Dec 31, 2023
At least 21 people, including three children, were killed and 110 others wounded in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian city of Belgorod on Saturday, Russian authorities said, a day after Moscow launched a huge and deadly aerial assault of its own against its neighbor.

The deaths were the result of a “massive” attack on downtown Belgorod, according to Russian state news agency TASS, quoting the emergencies ministry.

“This crime will not go unpunished,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“The Kiev regime … is trying to divert attention from the defeats on the front lines and to provoke us into taking similar actions.”

Saturday’s shelling comes after Russia launched overnight Thursday into Friday its biggest air attack on Ukraine since the start of its full-scale invasion, resulting in at least 40 deaths and more than 150 injuries.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian regions near the border have continued almost daily for over a year, sometimes resulting in civilian casualties, but this would be one of the single deadliest incidents yet reported. CNN cannot independently confirm the death toll.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been briefed about the attack in Belgorod, the Kremlin said, ordering a health ministry team and emergencies ministry rescuers to be sent to the city to help those affected.
