So, you are on the lookout for a job or a better job and you are also active on social media, then you see posts from career influencers urging you and several thousands of others to send them private messages to get jobs or to make comments like ‘interested’ in order to share links to jobs available within their networks. Are you not tired of taking such actions that do not yield any viable results both in the short and long term? If we are all being honest, these are not the ways to land jobs. First off, how will the career influencers asking people to make comments, reconcile everything and start offering jobs to all the recipients? This is 2020 and the best ways to land jobs are to search, either through job boards or within professional networks and send a comprehensive and ATS-compliant resume/CV, and when an interview session is arranged, you prepare very well and comport yourself to the expected standard. On the other hand, if a person is being recommended for a job, what s/he needs to do is to make sure that the hiring manager sees the expected attitudes and skills needed for the job in question during all the appraisals before s/he is offered the position. All these have nothing to do with writing ‘interested’ on the social media posts of career influencers. The right thing is to upgrade your skills in whatever career path you have chosen. Do not just rely on your Bachelor’s Degree. Take relevant online courses as well as a second Degree or a Master’s Degree if you can afford it. Read more books and informed articles, meet more people in your chosen industry, attend events to learn more about your industry and to share your knowledge with people. Make use of your social media platforms properly. Let your followers know what you do through your posts. Yes, you can use your social media platforms for entertainment. But, you can also post about your industry – this is how industry leaders are picked. People are watching what you post. If you are consistent, you could start getting invites from groups to sit on panels at events or to give public speeches in the media or on learning platforms. Expecting automatic job offers from career influencers on social media, is not the way. This is the absolute truth. Stay informed!
