Jobs/Vacancies / Stop Making This Mistake On Your Cv/resume! by AbdulAkpan: 11:01am On Mar 10, 2021
If you are applying for any job, you should use a one-directional resume.

This simply means that each resume you send out there, must focus on only one thing. If you will be taken seriously by hiring managers, then you must adopt this style of writing a resume.

For instance, you have just seen a job advert for the position of a Banking Officer at a commercial Bank and you want to apply because you have 7 years experience in the same role and 3 years experience in Fundraising at an NGO.

The wise thing to do would be to generate a resume that reflects all your experience as a Banking Officer. Leave out all the information about your fundraising experience because the hiring manager is only interested in looking for skills in Banking.

This is why it is important to have a new resume for each job application you are sending out there. If/when you decide to apply for a role in Fundraising for NGOs, you can create a resume focusing on the skills you have in that role.

There is no point telling a hiring manager how good you are in a role that s/he did not advertise for. Instead focus only on the role that you’re actually applying for.

Money is a great motivator in any career journey. So is respect for the worker.

What happens when your work and effort are constantly overlooked and unappreciated?

It is easy to allow feelings of self doubt to fester. But, what if you fight back?

You can take an alternative route to maintain your commitment to excellence and get the respect you deserve.

If you're treated like your work doesn't matter at the office, upgrade your skills and knowledge and keep working.

These days, lots of opportunities come as you commit to learning more. Take advantage of all new opportunities.

Also, take advantage of the gig economy. As you stay committed to your regular work, meet more people, identify gaps you can fill in the same industry - external consultant, researcher, speaker, activist, etc.

Filling these roles on a part-time basis, will elevate your status in your chosen industry.

As the world slowly recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important that the workplace and indeed all those who are employed, whether remotely or on-site, seek to establish and sustain compassion for colleagues.

According to Positive Psychology, workplace compassion invites more loyalty, dedication, and employee engagement. Organizations have an emotional component in them, and employees who work with each other compassionately are more likely to help and cooperate.

If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it is the fact that compassion is a necessary ingredient in the workplace. Before now, most of us couldn’t care less about being compassionate.

However, because of the pandemic, we are all wiser today and we need to start showing compassion to everyone – regardless of their status, ethnicity, or work rank.

According to Pacific Prime, practicing and showing compassion has the ability to spread harmony in any environment, making it ideal for the workplace.

A Heaphy and Dutton study carried out in 2008, revealed that employees who spent a few minutes interacting and mixing with their colleagues had steady blood pressure and heart rate.

Also, their immune systems are well-functioning, making them less prone to take sick leave. Increased functioning also called for better work-life balance, and the employees had happier families and social life.

Showing compassion to coworkers is not about being weak in the workplace, it is also a way to promote a healthy work environment as opposed to breeding a toxic one, which will inevitably lead to reduced output, employees will begin to dread turning up for work.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and even spend our leisure periods. It is only right that we take the time to be there for one another in the workplace, so we can promote a better and healthier world.

First thing everyone needs to understand is that employment is a two-way street. Employers and employees need each other. The employee is getting paid for a service s/he is offering the employer. It is an exchange of value for money.

It is greed that makes some employers believe that they are doing employees a favor by hiring them. And some employees encourage this behavior from their employers by accepting all forms of unethical practices in the workplace.

Yes, in Nigeria, abuse is common in the workplace because there are no jobs for millions of people and even some people who are employed are underemployed. But, for how long are we going to keep quiet and watch so-called employers take us for granted and abuse us or turn us into errand boys and girls (buying fufu and pepsi, flushing their toilet or picking their kids from school during work hours)?

We have searched for practical solutions to this kind of abuse, and we have asked some people who have overcome these kinds of situations and the answer is always the same;

As you are working in that abusive environment, don't give up on yourself. If you are still an entry level staff, search www.opportunitiesforafricans.com and look for scholarship opportunities in foreign schools. Apply to as many as you can, so you can leave the country on an academic visa. There are so many schools out there offering opportunities to people from developing countries like Nigeria.

The website also contains several fellowships, and contests, for people of different ages.

You can also start an online trade and use Instagram as your marketplace. As long as it is something people are willing to pay for, you will get the patronage you want.

You can also connect with anyone who has links to people in government, specifically, state commissioners at the Federal Character Commission. Submit your credentials with your state commissioner and keep in touch with him/her for when opportunities open up in any of the government parastatals that conduct open recruitment.

As you apply for scholarships, make sure you have a proper CV, cover letter and statement of purpose.
