Jobs/Vacancies / Here Are The Factors Hiring Managers Want In A Resume by AbdulAkpan: 6:58am On Feb 08, 2021
It is important to realize that hiring managers have factors that they look out for when reviewing resumes for available job vacancies. Some of those factors include; specifics, keywords, proof of impact, self-promotion.

After crafting your resume, review it and look out for specifics - go through the job description and check if you were specific enough when writing your resume. Being specific will attract the attention of the hiring manager.

After all, they have told you what they are looking for. It is only right that you give them proof of those qualities they are looking for.

You can make use of wordstream, SEMrush and wordtracker to search for related keywords when creating a resume to apply for jobs. Keywords are important because they let both the ATS and hiring manager know that you are a viable candidate for the job role.

What have you done in terms of that role? Yes, you may have some related experience, but what exactly have you achieved in that role? What problems have you solved? What innovative steps have you taken to improve on that role in the past?

You may be great at what you do, but are you bold enough to prove it to the hiring manager through your resume/cover letter? How good are you at self-promotion?

This is very important. When writing your resume, do not be modest about your career accomplishments. Promote yourself, sell your abilities!

What about those that doesn't give an appointment letter?

Should we reject the offer? mind you, we have nothing

Accept the offer. As you start working, use all the available resources that the job gives you and pursue a job where you can be given an appointment letter and a better offer. You deserve it.

Jobs/Vacancies / Here Are Some Fun Facts About The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) by AbdulAkpan: 1:22pm On Feb 01, 2021
First of all, the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a type of software that is used by recruiters and employers during the hiring process to collect, sort, scan, and rank the job applications they receive for job vacancies.

Lingo Africa has put together a few fun facts about the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that all jobseekers should know, so, they can be aware of just how important it is to have a CV/resume that is tailor made to whatever job vacancy they are applying for.

1. The ATS is now mostly used by a lot of companies - both smaller and large. Unlike before, when only big corporations made use of the system.

2. The ATS admits job applicants using job-related keywords. If for instance, you are applying for a job in Human Relations Management, your CV should have skills keywords like Assessed, Identified, Handled, Centralized, Coordinated, Coached, Implemented, Persuasive, Tactful, Innovative, Detail-oriented, Troubleshooter, Resourceful, etc.

3. The ATS does not focus on the most qualified job applicants. Rather, it focuses on removing the least qualified job applicants. So, if your CV/resume is not written with the appropriate use of relevant keywords, you can be removed by the ATS as a least qualified applicant.

4. ATS will identify fancy CV/resume templates as least qualified. So, when preparing your CV/resume, avoid using fancy templates and fancy fonts. Stick with classic templates and classic fonts.

5. Remove all graphics and photos from your CV/resume if you want to successfully scale through the ATS review.

6. Word documents are more compatible with ATS than PDF documents.

Jobs/Vacancies / Connections For Jobs Are Not Only For Big Men. You Have Yours Too! by AbdulAkpan: 7:42am On Jan 28, 2021
There is a lot of fuss around having connections for jobs in Nigeria. The common man feels left out when jobs in places like the central bank of Nigeria, NNPC, NSIA, FIRS, and PPPRA are only reserved for the children and associates of the big men and women in the children.

Of course, this is happening everyday and Nigerians are powerless to stop it because those benefitting from the dysfunction will do anything to maintain the status quo.

However, it is also good to realize that despite the fact that you may have no one in your family who can help you secure jobs in any of the aforementioned offices, the fourth industrial revolution has made it possible for the common man to have a voice.

The internet, especially social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn are great resources for the common man. How?

On Twitter, there are so many people who are experts at providing relevant and timely information on opportunities for academic relocation. If you are a young Nigerian, take advantage of such information, apply for scholarships abroad and relocate, study and boost your employability in better countries. One of such accounts on Twitter is @wakawaka_doctor

He shares relevant information for those who are interested in studying abroad or relocating abroad legally. Follow his account and help yourself. If you are not on Twitter, you can follow his blog on https://wakawakadoctor.com/

Also, you can visit www.opportunitiesforafricans.com for relevant information on scholarships, fellowships, competitions and other stuff that can help you as a young Nigerian.

Channel all the anger you feel for the big men and women of Nigeria who have refused to allow the system work for everybody towards using these resources to create a better life for yourself.

You can also leverage the relationships your parents, relatives or friends have with some big men and women. For instance, if your uncle or aunt is friends with a top level government appointee, try to convince him/her to help you secure a job through that friend.

For those of you who are very active in popular churches, take advantage of the opportunity to get close to the big men and women in your church and pressure them to help you get a good job.

But before you approach them, make sure your CV is in order and you have relevant skills for the position you are aiming at. If your CV is in good shape and you have great skills, they will be convinced to help you.

Use the anger you feel at the current state of your country, to pursue a better life for yourself. Be intentional.

A serious employer should create one for me then. I worked and schooled in places where the IT team ensured to create signature addresses for all employees/students. They knew a work/school life was different from a personal one. Rejecting someone based on his/her email address shows how undetermined the organization is to begin with.

Just like I stated in my original post, this is not supposed to be, but, it happens all the time. Speaking plenty English won't change that fact. It is best to stay safe and have email addresses that are devoid of such words listed above.

Look closely at the words in the post, Godswill. There's nothing wrong with your email address.

Cheers.
Jobs/Vacancies / You Will Lose Work Opportunities If Your Email Address Is Unprofessional by AbdulAkpan: 4:33am On Jan 27, 2021
A lot of professionals are still unaware of how much damage a funny email address can cost. Email addresses are supposed to be professional in nature. For instance, nina21@gmail.com does not raise any red flags for potential employers.

However, an email address that says sexylily@gmail.com could make potential employers to reject a job applicant. It is quite unfortunate but it happens all the time. Of course, many of us know that it would be better to look beyond what a person's email address is saying and focus on work skills.

But, the truth is that, a lot of times, people get judged using factors that they may not consider to be important. This is where the email address comes in. Instead of falling into such traps, it is better to make use of a professional email address.

As a jobseeker, extra care should be taken when sending out job applications because the job market is currently stiff and employers have tough decisions to make and will gladly disqualify anyone with the slightest unwanted feature.

If your email address has a word that you think is unfit for the professional workplace, then, please, create a new one using Gmail It is free and can be synchronized with other apps. Gmail even offers you a photo display icon, where your professional photo can be updated, so, everyone who contacts you via email can see what you look like - this is great for building your personal brand.

Even if you are not a jobseeker, you shouldn't have certain words within your email address. It can cost you work opportunities and it can also project you as an unserious professional.

You can use your name or initials in your email address, instead of words like booty, beast, sexy, hot, pussy, drunk, slut, satan, ripper, foxy, boner, god, hottie, etc. If your name is a popular one and it has already been taken, you can add numbers to your first name or initials.

Please, apply the same to your social media platforms, except the account you are creating is only meant as an anonymous page (that is not tied to your real name). For every Google search done on your name by anyone, anywhere in the world, everything associated to your name will show on those pages. What would you like people to see? Remember, the internet never forgets!
