The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lost its dispatch supervisor at the national secretariat Abdulrasak Sanusi alias Baba Osun, Igbere TV reports.

He died on Sunday at age 61 after a brief illness.

The party announced his death in a statement on Monday by the national secretary, caretaker/extraordinary convention planning committee John Udoedeghe.

Baba Osun, according to the statement posted to Twitter, was one of the party’s long-standing staff.

“With deep regrets, the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress announces the death of one of the Party’s long-standing staff, Abdulrasak Usman Sanusi who died on Sunday after a brief illness.

“The late Abdulrasak who was fondly called ‘Baba Osun’ by colleagues and friends was the party’s dispatch supervisor at the National Secretariat. He previously worked at the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), one of the legacy political parties that merged into the governing APC,” the statement reads.

The party commiserated with the bereaved family, adding that it would “miss the experience, sense of duty and maturity the late Abdulrasak displayed in the discharge of his duties.”

Online news platform Peoples Gazette has accused the Federal Government of disrupting access to its website.

Managing editor Samuel Ogundipe in a statement on Wednesday obtained by Igbere TV alleged the disruption began on Tuesday following a directive from the government to telecommunications firms in the country.

He said: “Our internal assessments and notes from our readers indicate a total restriction on our website for people connecting via MTN, Glo Mobile and Airtel, i.e.: a vast majority of Nigerian Internet users.

“Since our inception, we have diligently carried out our sole duty of bringing to public awareness, the rot that exists in our public and private institutions. We have exposed the abuse of power by government officials, agencies, and cronies; corrupt practices in the public and private sectors and flagrant abuse of human rights and the rule of law by security agencies.

“Despite intimidation, threats, harassment and offers of jaw-dropping financial and material inducement from powerful people in and out of government, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to the truth, with courage and nothing else.

“These new tactics that strive to screen Nigerians off independent and truthful journalism are a dagger in the relics of press freedom – another despotic turn in Nigeria’s descent into full-blown dictatorship under Muhammadu Buhari.”

Launched in 2020, Peoples Gazette has been critical of the Buhari administration.

Mr Ogundipe said that while the company seeks solution to the challenge, its readers can access alternative channels.

Ikechukwu Adinde spokesperson of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) which regulates mobile networks has yet to respond to calls put across to him, the online newspaper reports.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday met the new service chiefs for the first time since he announced their appointment, Igbere TV reports.

The new service chiefs are Major-Gen. Leo Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao, Chief of Air Staff.

The service chiefs’ appointment comes at a time the nation is grappling with widespread insecurity.

The men of the Amotekun Corps in Ondo West Local Government area of Ondo State have arrested a 22-year-old woman, Seun Oladayo for selling her day-old baby girl for N10,000 to a pastor, Igbere TV reports.

Oladayo, who hails from Abejoye in Ondo kingdom said she could not cater for the baby because the father the child, one Tope, dumped her the day he was told that she was pregnant.

"I asked the Pastor to take the baby away and bring N10,000 because I don't know how I am going to take care of the baby." she confessed.

The pastor identified as Olawale, popularly called Eri Aditu, however reported the matter to Amotekun's office in Ondo and the young woman was arrested.

He said the baby was given to him in a sack with the placenta by the mother who was desperate to sell her baby.

"I was told to bring N10,000, so that they can give the doctor N5,000 for his job and I did because if I did not, another person would come and buy the baby." said Olawale. "I went to the Amotekun to report the woman and she was handed over to Police at Area Commander Yaba in Ondo West Local Government Area."

The Ogun State Police Command on Thursday said it arrested a 25-year-old salesboy, Peter Okenu, for allegedly masterminding the robbery of his boss.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, explained that the suspect was arrested after “painstaking investigation” by detectives from the Ifo divisional headquarters, who had been trailing Okenu and his gang since December 17, 2020, when the case was reported.

He said, “The victim of the robbery, Stephen Anyi, reported at the Ifo Police Station that his house at Kajola Phase 2 area of Ifo was invaded around 2am by a seven-man gang, who were armed with guns, cutlasses and axes. He said they held him and his family hostage before dispossessing them of N150,000, his laptop, phones, plasma television and his Toyota Highlander, with number plate, KJA 38 FZ, which they used in carrying away the items.”

The police spokesman said after the report, the DPO Ifo, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed detectives to go after the robbers.

The cops reportedly traced the hoodlums to the Mushin area of Lagos, where they were about to sell off the vehicle.

Oyeyemi said four members of the gang were arrested. He identified them as Ibrahim Arowolo, 24; Sowemimo Faruk, 18; Yusuf Azeez, 23; and Yakubu Ibrahim, 31.

“During interrogation, they informed the police that it was the victim’s salesboy, Peter Okenu, who planned with the gang to rob his master. They stated further that the salesboy, who was in charge of the victim’s shop at Sango, met them and gave the description of his boss’ residence. The salesboy was promptly arrested and he confessed to the crime,” the police spokesman added.

According to Oyeyemi, the police recovered from the suspects the Toyota Highlander, one locally-made single-barrelled cut-to-size gun, one locally-made double-barrelled pistol, three cutlasses and four phones.

An unidentified driver killed a yet to be identified man along Ihiala Owerri road at about 5pm on Wednesday, January 20, Igbere TV reports.

According to eyewitness, the yet-to-be-identified man was found lying in the pool of his blood by the roadside after he was run over by an unidentified driver.

A rescue team from FRSC Ihiala Command was alerted and on getting to the scene, found the man lying in a pool of his own blood, and there was nothing to identify him with. He was taken to Arch Angel hospital where he was confirmed dead by the Doctor on duty, and his body has been deposited at a mortuary.

The Sector Commander Anambra State CC Andrew A Kumapayi FHNR who confirmed the incident warned drivers to avoid speeding especially in built-up areas, they should use the maximum speed limit of 50km/hr. He also cautioned pedestrians to be watchful when walking along the road and not be distracted. They should use the safest means of crossing the road if need be.

"We have come here to commiserate and sympathise with our brother, our friend and the good people of Sokoto State on what had happened to one of the biggest market in this country, the Sokoto central market.

"When I got the information last night, I was touched and I said as brothers, what affects you affects us. What affects Sokoto State affects Rivers State."

The Rivers State governor who empathized with the traders over the loss of their good worth billions of Naira, thanked God that no life was lost in the disastrous inferno.

"There is nothing you can equate with life. That there was no life lost, we give glory to the almighty Allah. Having come here, I've seen the level of destruction, it is unfortunate. People have lost their goods, the state government will have to see how this market will be brought back to the way it is supposed to be .

"We sympathise with you. We identify with you and we know the negative effect on the economy of the various families; families who depend for day to day trading and sales of their goods ."

Governor Wike expressed his appreciation to the various security and paramilitary agencies that prevented the fire from destroying the entire market.

He pledged that the government of Rivers State will support Sokoto State to rebuild the market and ameliorate the plight of the traders with N500 million.

"On behalf of the government and the people of Rivers State, we will support the Sokoto State government to see how quickly they can rebuild this market" he added.

Governor Tambuwal thanked Governor Wike and the people of Rivers State for the kind gesture.

Governor Wike also paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar in his palace to commiserate with him over the demise of junior brother , Hon. Abdulkadir Jeli Abubakar, who was Sokoto State Commissioner for Home Affairs.

In his response, Sultan Abubakar, acknowledged the age-long relationship between Sokoto and Rivers State and lauded to Governor Wike for sustaining it.

He explained that Governor Wike's visit and pledge to support Sokoto State is a demonstration of what Nigeria is and should be.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has put the number of hard drug users in the country at 15 million.

NDLEA newly appointed chairman, Brig-Gen Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), said this in Abuja on Monday when he assumed duty.

He warned drug barons and traffickers to quit the illicit trade or face hard times.

He said: “This development where drug use has eaten very deep into the nation’s social fabric.

“Over 15 million Nigerians of all ages are now hooked on drugs.

“It is the task of NDLEA to stop all this unacceptable nonsense of drug abuse in Nigeria.

“Together, by the grace of God, we’ll resuscitate and reposition NDLEA to full active life, to be effective, respected and feared by the concerned criminals.

“Nigeria is the only country we have; we cannot fold our arms. We can, will, and must eliminate the drug scourge.”

He said the NDLEA would be overhauled and expanded in line with the Presidential Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) recommendations, existing financial constraints, and the authorisation of the appropriate superior authorities, Igbere TV reports.

Marwa, who had till last December chaired the PACEDA.

“Learning that David Ntekim-Rex died despite existing laws that we passed during the 8th Senate to mitigate against such occurrences is truly heartbreaking. My heartfelt prayers are with his loved ones at this truly difficult time,” he tweeted.

Troops of Operation Tura Takaibango in conjunction with the Air Task Force Operation Lafiya Dole have effectively destroyed 7 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists' gun trucks and decimated several unconfirmed number of the terrorists when they attempted to attack their location at the outskirts of Marte in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, Igbere TV reports.

The gallant troops, based on reliable information about the attack, had positioned themselves in an ambush site where they tactically withdrew to, and awaited the arrival of the terrorists before they opened fire which led to fierce battle that resulted in the successes recorded as indicated above.

In what will always be known as a black day, another 15 lives have been lost in Nigeria. They were killed in two separate auto crashes that occurred on Friday, January 15.

The accident which also claimed the lives of 6 siblings - four girls and two boys - occurred in Arue-Uromi and Agbede, in Edo state. Igbere TV reports that the Arue-Uromi accident reportedly provoked anger, tears and sorrow.

The news outlet reported that one account had it that the children were crossing the road, while another said they were playing football when an approaching Mercedes Benz, in an attempt to dodge a pothole, swerved and ran into them‎, killing them on the spot.

The Mercedes Benz was burnt down in anger by residents of the area. According to the report, the other accident was said to be multiple ones that involved a petrol tanker, a Sienna bus, and two other vehicles. It reportedly claimed nine lives, eight male and one female while many people sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Fourteen people, including five children were killed in a ghastly motor accident along Anyingba-Ajaokuta road in Kogi State on Thursday, January 14, Igbere TV reports.

The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC) Solomon Aghure, who confirmed the development to newsmen in Lokoja on Friday, said three vehicles, two trucks and a passenger bus, were involved in the accident.

Aghure said the trucks belonging to Dangote and a bus with the inscription, Bright Mass Transit, were travelling on the same lane towards Anyingba when one of the trucks suddenly hit the passenger bus from behind and the bus, as a result of the impact, also hit the truck in its front.

Aghure said the bus was trapped in between the two trucks with all the passengers before his men arrived the scene to carry out rescue operation, which lasted for hours.

He said that 14 out of the 23 persons involved in the accident died on the spot, while nine others sustained various degrees of injury.

Those who died included three female children, two male children, eight women and one man.
