Good day AbdulUmar, please I need some clarification from you,in your system set up,the water in the white tank is it direct from the biofilter or from the outlet of the fish tanks?Which type of biofilter are you using? Is it the imported one or the local assemble one?If it's the locally assemble one, which biofiltrating media did you used?

The water is straight from the biofilter.... The filtration system was built personally. It's a two step unit.... First step is solids removal( feed and surface dirt), second step is removal of finer particles and nitrification. Filtration media comprise of bio balls and other materials.

The size of your system should largely determine your biofilteration requirements..... I have about 14,000 liters in circulation with a 300liter capacity biofilter.... My growbed complements the filtration activity by reducing nitrate level. For example... I have a pH of about 8 in door and 7.2 in the white tank outside....

You can get them at Eliozu by Rukpokwu Roundabout. If you are going from Air Force, it's after OPM,just before the Rukpokwu roundabout.

Cheers

Please I am equally interested in those tanks. In Niger State... Need some help with price and possibly transportation. Any closer links will be appreciated.

@ abdulumar. Please kindly explain the last picture where u use some equipments in d fish tank

The tank shown in the picture is a ground reservoir. It is attached to another tank which stores about 2,000 liters of water from the hatchery. The multiple pipes are inlets an outlets used to control the flow if water to the grow space and back into the hatchery. The blue tubes are for aeration. Dissolved Oxygen is important for plants too. Otherwise we get root rot.

I placed styrofoam on the tank cos it was just empty space doing nothing which now has 40 heads of lettuce. Compared to a field I would need much more space.

So in real terms there are no equipment in the tank...

Hope this helps.

Just hatchery activities. Move them to concrete and earthen ponds post juvenile.

How did you plant the lettuce? Did u just cut small holes in styrofoam for the seeds and drop the styrofoam in ur fish ponds?

Create a nursery for them, either soil based or like in my case I used foam. Sprinkle ammonia rich water on it for a few days and the magic is done. When the plants shed off their seed leaves and have true leaves you transplant into the aquaponics system. Therein, growth is rapid.

The general idea is to mimic the nature in soil... If you water a plant it evaporates or the soil takes it in... It's not water logged otherwise it would spoil. Sorry for the delayed response.

what's d kg/tonnage of veg you are producing with that system & what is d frequency of harvest

I am just about to expand the plantation and this is the first cycle. Lettuce have a gestation period of 6-7weeks so with proper scheduling, a weekly harvest is feasible. I will weigh when they are ripe for harvest before eating... Lol.

Please where can one get lettuce seed, can you explain how it is being planted and nurture [/quote

I think almost any seed can be gotten in the market.. Well maybe not the hybrids. I used N200 lettuce seeds and still have a lot left as you notice the bed is empty.

As for the nursery.... I just used foam, immerse it in the ammonia rich water daily and it grows out before I moved it to the gravel bed....

Fellow Nairalanders, I am to write on project titled 'construction of an aquaponics system in nigeria using locally available materials'. I would like to know if anyone have an idea on the topic AQUAPONICS Generally. Because for now I only know it is a green ecosystem that incorporates aquaculture and hydroponics together using a biofiter.

Hey,

Not just heard... Using it to grow lettuce now.... What do u want to know?

simply they have no fund to fuel continuously, it has a high ROI if well managed, for a good one initial capital outlay is much, i have seen some too, but most cases it is wise to just use concrete tanks and do dripping or flow thru and be patient, presently am thinking of experimenting with aquaponics when i get d details right, though they all boil down to electricity

Good day All,

Nice to see that we are talking about aquaponics.... I am currently working on a system... Growing lettuce for now with a few tomatoes. Gradually trying to expand it. The growth rate is very very impressive. Have same lettuce growing the field... The aquaponics one seems like it had some red Bull..... Lol

The idea is to deploy using available materials... Keep it cheap... . Though I'm working numbers to embark on a greenhouse for aquaponics.

Good morning every one in this thread. All protocols duly observed. With regards to all masters and ogas in the house i beg your pardon to introduce myself to the house as this is the first time i am commenting on this thread.
I am a Fish farmer from Bauchi with 1 and half years experience. When i started, one man helped me bought juvenile from Abuja. secondly from Minna. and thirdly from bauchi. So i began to understand that some fish used to do better than others in terms of quick growth and healthiness. currently the fish i have in my farm were bought from Minna, they are more than five months in my ponds but not up to 500g. I decided to hatch in my farm this time around that i want to stock again for the fifth time.
Now i want you guys to help me in getting good broodstocks that can yield fast growing and healthy fingerlings to start my first hatching in my farm. secondly, i want to stock 3000 juveniles before my hatched ones grow up to ensure continuity of supply to my customers. so where and how can i get those good juveniles that can grow within 4 months all conditions being equal.
lastly i want to attend hatching training if i can have one.
thank you all.

Welcome to the forum Manya!!!!! I am not really sure if the location (State) from which you secure your juveniles may determine success rates.... I think the key point is the service provider that supplied the juveniles.... I do business in Minna.... It will be sad if i produce juveniles and the market assumes that Minna aint got good juveniles....

Just an observation pls... Lets promote good work....

I will get contacts of plastic producers so DT u can discus with them if they can produce such for u. I know Onitsha and nnewi shld be able to do such.

I still wonder how such can be used for partitioning.

That will be highly appreciated. as for the partitions; they will be joined together.... plastic wont wear in water... i dont think the fish will break through it either. Its part of our research and development component...

I believe thats why we are here sharing ideas.... wink cool

@abdularmar, what could u have done to prevent d issue with the pond, plz share so DT we can learn.

The challenge i have faced during this cycle is an issue with water quality.... (i think it affected the results to a large extent)... However, we under estimated the size of the ponds and realized that the borehole we had on site could not service the ponds as required....

We have sunk another borehole.... muuuuuuchhh deeper and are about sorting out the overhead storage to ensure sufficient water availability.

The other one was an issue with placement of feed orders... there was a delay in delivery and for about 2 days could not feed the fish....

Interestingly... the mortality experienced is pretty low less than 30 from our count over the duration.... this is not including those that might have suffered being swallowed by the bigger fish grin grin.

I will also want to know your cost of building a concrete earthen pond.
I need to compare it with the cost of building a pond DT is above ground level and compare it with other additional costs as draining water with water pump.

The property was purchased with the ponds already constructed. To commence the project, we had to undertake repairs to the ponds... I have been told by several people that it was not the best design in the world and the site location as well was not great. As for draining the water, it is definately not cost effective to use a pump. Once we are done with this cycle, we are going to insert an overflow/drain mechanism to address the expenditure.

@ cross,
I feel d first thing to do is to know d exact pH of the water.
I heard ppl use wood ash to treat after knowing d pH. The pH determines d quantity.

All ogas in d house, abeg appear and answer this question.

@abdulamar, u really tried ooo. I will advise next time, u stock ur fishes in batches till u get a bigger and steady market for ur fish. I will like to know how u fed them till 5 months. Did u use loval feed at anytime? The ppl DT sold u the juveniles can also link u to fish sellers with large capacity.

Thanks for the advise. Building the contact base and market as we move along sold 1.6 tonnes thus far... currently have a service provider fabricating a smoking/drying kiln to preserve excess that cannot be sold immediately. As for feed; used Multifeed from the start.... got them at juvenile stage.

I am no expert.... though i have engaged a fisheries graduate and current test on feed type based on our assessment is that copens is our next target. heard its a bit pricey but it may be worth every kobo if its going to provide the results we need.
