It’s not about being legit or not. It’s about paying back. If the plan is to work in Canada as a student then use his earnings to pay back I pity him.

If your intention is to come work as a student in Canada then use your earnings as a student to pay I strongly advise against it.

By the end of last month I have started preparing his mind for deferral.

I applied in May. Program start date: September.

Applying early and get getting it early gives you much time to prepare in terms of buying what you would need.

No one really knows the processing time will go high like this

Program starting September and someone applying for study permit in July for me it’s a risky adventure even if the process time is 2weeks.

Best time to apply in my opinion is minimum 4months to school resumption.

That processing time is just an estimated time.

Personal Account (Dorm): 8,160 USD (from my elder sister in the United States). My dad was my primary sponsor. The only bit I contributed to majorly was my School fees.

In that column where you were asked how much money do you have to spend in Canada what did you write there? And did it match with what you showed as POF?

You said the money in the GIC was sent from your dad into the GIC acct.

The N15m sent from your patents’ joint account to where? Your account personal acct?

The money in your dom acct was sent from your sister to your dom?

I think in my opinion it’s not just about having the money but how the money moves also matters.

Hello everyone, I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through something similar.
Timeline
• Applied for study permit: 4 July 2026
• Program: Post-Graduate Certificate (CloudOps), York University School of Continuing Studies
• Start date: 10 September 2026
• Biometrics: completed
• Medical: upfront medical completed before study permit application
• Tuition: CAD 18,958 paid in full
• Proof of funds: CAD 22,000 GIC with CIBC, plus additional family funds
• Published processing time for Nigeria: 9 weeks, now reached
• Status: no decision or update on Study permit application.

Also, I submitted an IRCC webform asking for the file to be reviewed before my start date. No response so far.

Where it gets complicated now is that, my program only runs once a year, in September. So a straight deferral would mean September 2027, a full year.

The program I’m enrolled in ends 11 May 2027, so I was concerned that if my permit were approved now, the validity wouldn’t cover a 2027 start and I’d be reapplying from scratch anyway. I asked the school about deferring instead into a January 2027 certificate in a related field (cyber security operations since cloud security is my intended specialization, so the switch is genuine, not a workaround).

The school replied that they don’t allow program changes after enrolment. They said they will process a withdrawal from my current program, hold the funds I’ve paid as a credit, and I must submit a fresh application for the January program.

So I’m now looking at a pending study permit application resting on a Letter of Acceptance for a program I’m being withdrawn from, with no new LOA yet and no admission decision for the new program.

Questions
1. Has anyone had a file decided after the start date on their LOA had passed? Was it refused on the basis that you could no longer begin the program, or did the officer work around it?
2. Does updating a pending application by webform with a new LOA actually work in practice? Did IRCC assess against the new start date and issue a permit matching it?
3. My medical is valid until roughly mid-2027. For anyone whose start date moved well out, did IRCC request a fresh medical, or issue a letter of introduction that expired before the new start?
4. Program change at the same DLI while the application is pending: has anyone done this successfully? Any issues with the officer questioning the change of study plan?
5. Is it better to let this application run to a decision, or withdraw it and submit a clean application once the new LOA is in hand? I keep going back and forth.
Any experience welcome, including bad outcomes. I’d rather know.

From my research, Processing time doesn't mean that your permit would be approved or refused within that given time. It can take longer or shorter. The time is just an estimated time.

If you happen to re-apply next year or any time you want to, make sure that your medical result is valid on the day you land in Canada. One of the letters from IRCC said that you will show the border officers your medical results. though in my case I was not asked but I printed my medical result and carried it with me to Canada.

I applied for my family together with mine. My plan was if they didn't give us the visa, I would just do something very meaningful with the money.

I told my spouse if they don't give us it is not the end of the world; I won't even reapply but use the money for better things.

I didn't want a case that I would be in and they would be struggling to come in. On my hard-earned money, no way!

It seems some of us who didn’t take this Canada stuff to heart eventually got it. I already had plan B because my application wasn’t that strong due to home ties and course of study is not close related to my first degree or my job.

If you have multiple accounts here you will be paying multiple services charges all over,not like Nigeria where one person can have upto 5 different bank accounts and receive interest,In canada bank inerest is peanut compare to Nigeria..
Nigeria banks are doing give away on interests.

At least they will charge and notify me what the money went for unlike GTBank that will deduct my money without even telling me what the deduction is for. I stopped using ATM in 2020 after the lock-down. Yet GTBank keep charging me for ATM card maintenance fees.
How about SMS fee charges from GTBank even when I went to the bank to deactivate SMS alerts I still get charged monthly for SMS alerts some months the fees could go as high as 5k. When I asked the will tell me it was a compounding charge.
I don't want to talk about buying of Data and Airtime using my GTBank app and money would be deducted and my line would not be credited with data or airtime. I will go to GTbank to complain they will refer me to MTN. Went to MTN and they will refer me to GTBank. Due to this, I created account with Opay and whenever I want to pay bills I transfer money from GTBank to Opay then use Opay for payment of bills and purchase of data.

I have never used GTBank app to purchase data or airtime and got it. They will deduct the money but never gave the data. GTBank would randomly deduct N10, N500, N200 from my account without telling what the money was for. At least the 16 dollars hopefully I would be told it's for monthly fee service charge.

The period I have huge amount on my GTBank 5k will go for SMS alerts the period I have small amount, 300 -700 will go. Note: I deactivated SMS alerts o.
Should I talk UBA own?

These two banks made me ran to Fairmoney to save my money.

Is it the poor customer services? Is it the account officer that would not respond to emails and phone calls? I don't want to talk about the security guys at the door post who have turned to constant beggars some even write their account numbers on pieces of papers and give it to their customers to send them money.

Do you know how many times I stopped visiting UBA bank a particular branch close to me because of the security guys there?
UBA has a mobile machine just like POS machine where customers use in doing electronics transactions. These security guys would hid the machine and tell you they have carried it to charge or that there was no network when you want to leave the premises the will tell you they can bring the machine but you will have to bribe them.

Abeg no make me talk. I dumbed my UBA account because of the security guys.

Did you know that when I was opening my GTBank dom account I had to bribe for my KYC to be done? The guy boldly told me to put something in an envelop and attach with my form then he referred me to a man upstairs to give it he said in that way my KYC would be done faster.

Check the side bars there’s a button you would click to allow you sign or upload your handwritten signature.

Defer your admission to Jan. The early you defer your admission the better. If you do it later you may lose a percentage of your tuition fee. Sha it depends on your school. Contact your school they are in the best place to advise you the next step to take.

I just changed my home address on my bank while at home. In Nigeria I would need to physically be in the bank, join a long queue, present my NIN and a recent NEPA bill in order to get my home address changed from my account information.

I drove more than 30mins to a Nigerian bank to do transactions only to be told to come back in two days time because of NETWORK.

I will never forget the day I went to UBA to open an account the lady requested for my passport photograph I presented soft copy she said I must bring hard copy. I stepped out and snapped passport photos brought it to her. She scanned the passport uploaded in her computer then put the hard copy inside a waste bin right before my eyes.
Same soft copy she rejected ended up using it.

And you are not given a form to fill and asked for passport photograph (hard copy) when what they would likely use is soft copy.

You need a passport photograph, not just one but two . fill a lengthy form just to open a bank account in Nigeria and in some banks you wait for at least 5 business days to get ATM card.

My study permit application was straightforward.
Went to the site, read instructions, created a portal, uploaded necessary documents, got messages to go for medicals, biometrics and submit passport which I did and the permit was approved after verifying my documents and everything was valid.
So, yeah! It was pretty straightforward for me.
