matrixme: May Steve Jobs haunt you guys in your sleep! The visionary enterpreneur that had to literarily die in his quest to make the world romance QUALITY tech products! If Apple truely did not invent anything, well they did, a great brand. Many people sure knows this!My friend, you are drunk on Apple's hyped up ogogoro. Do you know the first Iphone didn't even have cut-and-paste? What is it you ask? Well, lets say you wanted to cut some text from an e-mail and send it to your mama via SMS. You couldn't do that in the first Iphone. Meanwhile, your Windows Mobile phone, or LG or Nokia was doing that a few years prior. That was how bad Iphone was. On top of that, no memory card. No themes. Can't replace battery or use back up battery. Can't change the friggin background to a pic of your baby daughter or son which even cheap chinko phones were doing at that time. Want a custom ringtone?...well good luck!! Apple was, and is still a Nazi phone company raking in billions of USD due to people's ignorance. |
otumfour: for 1's on nairaland.....Chaley, you suck! ![]() |
The first Iphone in the beginning didn't even have "apps" (short for 'application') . Apple refused to provide an SDK (Software Development Kit) for programmers to use for writing native apps for the device. It was a sleek and shinny device alright, but coming from a Windows Mobile background, where I had access to thousands of third-party apps off the internet, I was unimpressed by the Iphone's one track mind and closeness. Eventually, Apple did cave in and released the SDK which lead to their "App Store" a year later. To the uninformed, Apple "invented" the concept of the app store or central repository of software where devices or computers can quickly download and install apps. However, if you are a techie, you would know that, Linux was using the concept of an "app store" long before the Iphone was conceived. So how about this "slide to unlock" (STUL) that Apple is now crying foul over in Galaxy S3? Apparently, STUL doesn't belong to Apple. It was invented by a company called Neonode, who was finally granted a patent early this year. STUL Reference: http://www.dailytech.com/Analysis+Neonode+Patented+SwipetoUnlock+3+Years+Before+Apple/article24046.htm How about the one where phone numbers become clickable links in e-mails or SMS? Yes, Apple claims that's theirs too. Well, I remember clicking phone numbers on my Windows Mobile and Nokia phone messages back in 2003 -- four good years before the Iphone. I have never been an Apple fan because I always feel my intelligence being insulted whenever I touch their products. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING they have is from their hard work. Apple buys companies and use their technology in their iCrap. Iphone 5 is coming out in two weeks, and I guarantee you there will be nothing in there you haven't seen before, in a prior phone from a different company.... but I'm sure it will be SHINNY! |
INNO18: lolololssssssss. Laff wan tear my bele. All these #ga**i activist enh, they have a way of circumventing norms. Thumbs up guy.Yes, the Ga*itivist are more innovative than Apple and Samsung combined. |

If not for Apple's shameless lawsuits, most people would have never known Apple was the greatest copycat of all time. Did you know LG had a tablet called "Digital iPad" back in 2001? https://edge.alluremedia.com.au/m/g/2012/09/lgipad.jpg Sure, it's not exactly the slick tablets of today but it was a tablet and even named "IPAD" |
Dieter Rams was an influential designer. He was head of design at Braun in the 1950s and 1960s. Isn't it interesting to see Apple calling another company a copycat? Check out the similarities of Apple's products to Braun's. The Ipod itself was invented by a British guy, not Apple: https://www.nairaland.com/1034932/apple-admits-british-man-invented Watch "Pirates of Silicon Valley" and you'll understand how most of these this big American tech companies came to be. Doesn't this make you want to slap Apple for being a jerk with Samsung? |
How does this thread affect the price of gari? |
Apple has finally admitted that a British man who left school at 15 is the inventor behind the iPod. Kane Kramer, 52, came up with the technology that drives the digital music player nearly 30 years ago but has still not seen a penny from his invention. And the father of three had to sell his home last year and move his family to rented accommodation after closing his struggling furniture business . https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/09/07/article-1053152-045807F30000044D-904_468x429.jpg Now documents filed by Apple in a court case show the US firm acknowledges him as the father of the iPod. The computer giant even flew Mr Kramer to its Californian headquarters to give evidence in its defence during a legal wrangle with another firm, Burst.com, which claimed it held patents to technology in the iPod and deserved a cut of Apple’s £89billion profits. Two years ago, Mr Kramer told this newspaper how he had invented and built the device in 1979 – when he was just 23. His invention, called the IXI, stored only 3.5 minutes of music on to a chip – but Mr Kramer rightly believed its capacity would improve. His sketches at the time showed a credit-card-sized player with a rectangular screen and a central menu button to scroll through a selection of music tracks – very similar to the iPod. He took out a worldwide patent and set up a company to develop the idea. But in 1988, after a boardroom split, he was unable to raise the £60,000 needed to renew patents across 120 countries and the technology became public property. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/09/07/article-1053152-0458092D0000044D-858_468x514.jpg Kramer's prototype digital music player he invented back in 1979 https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/09/07/article-1053152-03517A590000044D-902_468x311.jpg Apple sells 100 iPods a minute Apple used Mr Kramer’s patents and drawings to defend itself in the legal wrangle with Burst last September and he gave evidence under fire from Burst’s lawyers. Mr Kramer, of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, said: ‘I was up a ladder painting when I got the call from a lady with an American accent from Apple saying she was the head of legal affairs and that they wanted to acknowledge the work that I had done. ‘I must admit that at first I thought it was a wind-up by friends. But we spoke for some time, with me still up this ladder slightly bewildered by it all, and she said Apple would like me to come to California to talk to them. 'Then I had to make a deposition in front of a court stenographer and videographer at a lawyers’ office. The questioning by the Burst legal counsel there was tough, ten hours of it. But I was happy to do it.’ The dispute between Apple and Burst.com has since been settled confidentially out of court. Mr Kramer said: ‘To be honest, I was just so pleased that finally something that I had done which has been a huge success and changed the music industry was being acknowledged. I was really quite emotional about it all.’ He is now negotiating with Apple to gain some compensation from the copyright that he owns on the drawings. But so far he has received only a consultancy fee for providing his expertise in the legal case. A staggering 163million iPods have been sold since the device was launched by Apple in 2001. Every minute, another 100 are snapped up worldwide, earning Apple an estimated £5.5billion last Christmas alone. But Mr Kramer, in contrast, last year had to close his struggling furniture design business and move with his wife Lorraine and children, Jodi, nine, Luis, 14, and Lauren, 16, into rented accommodation. ‘I can’t even bring myself to buy an iPod for myself,’ he said. ‘Apple did give me one but it broke down after eight months.’ Mr Kramer, who organises the annual British Invention Show, is now working on a patented invention he claims will be bigger than the iPod. Called Monicall, it will allow people to have phone calls recorded and emailed to the various parties as an audio file. He said: ‘It will speed up business deals and provide a low-cost third-party witness to conversations and agreements. ‘A deal will be done on the phone and that is it – an audio file gets emailed over within 30 seconds.’ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1053152/Apple-admit-Briton-DID-invent-iPod-hes-getting-money.html |
Tony Spike: 20% Bread Price Hike Begins In Lagos SaturdayHow does the price of bread affect the price of gari in the market?...metchwwww |
I personally think the reason Africans or non-first world societies like house help is due to cheap labor. In the west, only the filthy rich use maids, gardeners or domestic help (which includes wet nurses). Anybody ever used a babysitter in USA or UK or Australia on a regular basis? What was your monthly budget for just childcare? |
texazzpete: Can you point out anything really INNOVATIVE in the Galaxy S III?https://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/5/Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Phone.jpg The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the Ferrari of Android phones, with a gorgeous 4.8-inch 720p resolution display, an impossibly slim and light casing and a quad-core engine that goes like stink. I like the look of the Galaxy S3 from the front, with its simple design, curved corners and metal trim. The processor is fast, the screen stunningly dazzling and the microSD slot stunningly practical. the Samsung Galaxy S3 stands above the iPhone 4S and laughs at it. It is far thinner, lighter and delivers more for your money. In terms of the user experience, the fluidity of operation, the feature set, and in virtually every area that counts, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is light years ahead of Apple’s profitable darling. https://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17lill44qxsdkjpg/original.jpg The Samsung Galaxy S III uses the HD Super AMOLED tech, while the Apple iPhone 4S sticks to the oldie IPS-LCD which can't really compare with the absolutely amazing contrast level and ultra-saturation of the Super AMOLED screen. Galaxy S III looks much more striking. Frankly, GS3 makes Iphone looks like it was manufactured in the 90s. In the next-generation Apple smartphone (Iphone 5) you may not find the specification bumps you’ve seen in Samsung's Galaxy S3 today. The GS3 has a one-ness that encapsulates the smartphone experience. You’ll be wondering if that’s what Samsung meant when they said that their device was “Inspired by nature, designed for humans” without a doubt. The Galaxy S III is a hero, complete with the newest version of Android (4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) and a new version of their own unique user interface by the name of TouchWiz – in this case, a nature-themed iteration. Along with this device comes Samsung’s many brand-ready services such as S-Beam for paring devices together wirelessly. Smart Stay for using the front facing camera to detect when you want to make a call. Best Shot / Best Photo – this being enhancements for the back-facing camera to help you find the best photo you’ve taken out of a rapid-fire series. |
Samsung has a whole department dedicated to building products specifically for Africa. I'd rather give them my money than selfish, greedy Apple. Even Bill Gates of Microsoft has a huge foundation for helping Africa. aguiyi: they should ban them copy right rogues. they produce crap and sell at huge price as if its originality is second to non.At least Samsung product users CAN change the batteries in their phone or use spare batteries. For the iphone, If the battery dies, you'd have to ship the phone back to Cupertino, California USA. What joke! |
ehie: this apple want to create a monopoly, scared because Samsung always a step ahead and very innovative, apple on the other hand has been struggling and running outta ideas since Jobs died....well we will see as it plays out worldwide Samsung are the leaders in mobile phone and if they grow at the rate tey are going, apple will become a thing of the past...Apple run out of ideas way before Steve Jobs died. |
Bawss1: I think that at this point Samsung ranks just as good as Apple. When the iPhone 5 is unveiled next month we'll see whether Apple can still lay claims to being an innovative company. You are giving Apple too much credit by comparing them to Samsung. Apple didn't invent ANY of the technologies used in their phones or computers. Okay I'm wrong - they patented "shininess", rounded-edged rectangles, icons and gestures (how to swipe your fingers across the screen). The previous poster wanted to know what is truly innovative about Galaxy S3. Ha! I laugh in Twi! If he has to ask, then I'm sure he'll not understand my answer or never used a Galaxy S3. Instead, let me rather ask him -- please tell us what is so technologically innovative about the Iphone? |
Samsung is the champ and future of mobile tech while Apple is simply a jealous, overgrown and overpriced dickhead! |
texazzpete: You laziness is breathtaking.Apple's patent is invalid. It shouldn't have been granted because it is prior art. How can a "rectangle with rounded corners" be patented? Grids of icons were on Palm and Windows Mobile phones prior to the iphone. Even LG Prada, which was launched months BEFORE the iphone, came with grids of icons and was a rectangle with rounded corners. Take a look at the above pic. One could easily replace the "Samsung" logo on that phone (which came before the iphone) with a bitten apple. LG Prada... Iphone 4 must have been inspired by LG Prada! https://vandtelefon.com/pictures/2010/10/11/lg-prada_81232.jpg |
na2day!:Samsung did NOT copy Apple! Samsung came out with no fewer than 3 Touchscreen Candy Bar Smartphone models prior to the iPhone launch. SGH-Z610 was introduced in January 2006. It was their first effort at producing an intuitive gesture based Touchscreen Multimedia Smartphone. It had a 3.5" screen, rounded corners, horizontal speaker above the screen, and listen to this.... a single ROUND PHYSICAL BUTTON beneath the screen, flanked by two soft buttons. This was obviously preemptive and proves this button style front layout, if anything, belonged to Samsung. It was white (like many phones were before it), had not one, but two cameras. One on the front for Video Chat that US carriers were not using. None the less, this phone passed through the American FCC doors in August, 2006 and went on sale in September. Though it did not sell well, because of expense, it was a true 3G phone (a year before, Samsung was just selling 2G phones). It had a metal bezel around the outside edge of the phone and a 3MP camera on the back (a year before Apple released theirs) and both cameras could be used/send pics in emails and video chats of which Apple still refuses to pay Samsung for patents. The Round button which is now referred to as the Home button was had the symbol for a "Play" button used since the 80's on various devices, as is Apple's square symbol used for "Stop" function. On the F700, they abandoned the round button style for the square or rectangular shape which is still used to this day. Everything Apple uses in their phone's exterior design today has some roots in Samsung's designs that came before the iPhone. So exactly who copied whom? Did Apple's Cart come before Samsung designed and built even the original processors? Or did Samsung not only help in designing and furnishing screens, processors, memory, etc to Apple on top of being the first to use a Single Round Physical Button on a Touchscreen Phone with Designs patents applied for a month before iPhone was even introduced? "Senator Barrack Obama"? Verify the date on that article. |
The funny thing is, her babies would grow up to become unproductive 419 criminals in UK. |
Obama should have vetoed the ban on Galaxy Tab 10.1, with Samsung being one of America's largest employers of engineering graduates in Texas. They also have their main US headquarters in New York, mining in Pennsylvania, Research and Development facilities in around 5 or 6 states and their mobile division is head quartered just outside Dallas. Along with chip works in Florida and Samsung Heavy Industries and construction projects all across the US. They're also building the first and only compressed natural gas containment facility in Canada at a cost of 55 Billion Dollars! This is no iToy or iCrap company like Apple. They built The Burj Dubai, tallest skyscrapper and a big majority of offshore oil platforms, including the largest in the World! Apple's win of this asinine lawsuit is at America and Apple's expense. Samsung's should suspend operations in Austin, Texas. Samsung is already working with China to build their first World Class Semi-conductor plant in that country. To the tune of 6 Billion USD there in just one venture this year. They know that they must be on the right side of the Chinese, since they are now the largest smartphone market in the World topping America. Apple is barely a blip in that market where Samsung is #1 followed by Nokia and Chinese ZTE and others. Do the judges and jury who worked these cases realize this? I don't think so. Thousands of top paid engineering jobs would leave America and I don't think even Apple realizes what that means. Samsung leases all their space in Austin, Texas, besides loaning them many engineers. The effects would be catastrophic to the State of Texas alone should Samsung decide to take drastic actions with this verdict. We're not talking about just anyone being able to make these chips. Apple would have to change from Samsung/IBM Gate First HKMG process to Intel/TSMC's Gate Last process over night and that's around a 8 to 9 month redesign at least! Simply put, Samsung can cripple Apple in a flash if it wants to. |
Kenyanstar: is it reallym hard for nigerians to accept that kenya can beat them in certain aspects. what makes kenya have the fast internet is due to the governments adoption of fibre optic. kenya is the second country in africa to acquire fibre optic technology. it has also been considered the 2nd in adoption of analog to digital migration extra terrestial tv signal. kenya as also scored a first in africa by building a technological city(konza city) aptly nicknamed savanah valley. kenya is home to east and central africas biggest and most profitable homegrown mobile service provider(safaricom). it is the first company in the world to revolutionise mobile money banking and money transfer. this simply proves that kenya has the capacity to even surpus its position in tecno savvy practices.Your mama's puzzy stinks! |
One of them is a definitely a NIGERIAN with a Ghanaian passport. They are all Nigerians. |
There's no reason why West Africa can't enjoy fast internet connection like in the developed world. After all, several high speed internet fiber hugs our coast from South Africa all the way to Europe. Our problem is poor telecom infrastructure. What I'm saying is akin to how Nigeria *sort of* generates power, albeit not enough, but to efficiently distribute that power seems to be the bottleneck. The same analogy can be applied to fast internet access. Glo seems to be doing the right thing in Ghana to address this problem. They are wiring the whole country and neighborhoods with fibre optics cables. Some have even passed through the Volta river all the way to the north. Hopefully in the near future, Ghanaians will have internet access into their homes in gigabits if Glo's plan goes well (and doesn't get sabotaged... knowing how we hate Nigerians ). |
Hey, why don't some of you Naija based NLders point your browser to http://www.speedtest.net, run a few tests and post your best result here to confirm this topic? |
slightlyMad: so to achieve good speed you have to tunnel through NigeriaNot really, it depends on how the ISPs setup their network. The ping time for a server has to be fast to get a good test result. May be that's why Airtel/Zain is not the fastest internet in Ghana due to bad hardware setup. Mind you, that was just a test where a particular server was selected. When one is surfing the internet in Ghana, their connection route doesn't go through Lagos or it might be different depending on where they're located. |
