Plateau State, on Tuesday, witnessed mass defection of prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

Among those who defected were a former governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Dariye; Ambassador Fidelis Tapgun; former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, General Jeremiah Timbut Useni: Senator Victor Lar; and the state deputy governor, Ambassador Ignatius Longjan.

Also, a former minister and former deputy governor of Plateau State, Pauline Tallen; Mr Jimmy Cheto and Chief Jethro Akun have concluded plans to move to the APC ahead of Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

It was gathered that Dariye, Useni, Tapgun and Cheto had been in secret meetings with top politicians across the 17 local government areas of the state, to canvass votes for the APC candidates for the two elections.

Meanwhile, a group of supporters of the APC on the platform of Advocacy Campaign, in a press statement signed by Comrade Saddiq Agamah Sumbelep, said Dariye’s group had resolved to defect formally to the party tomorrow.

Sumbelep disclosed that the defection to the APC was to bring government closer to the people at the grassroots.
Sumbelep said the launching of the “Vote All Progressives Congress candidates across Plateau State Advocacy Campaign” was aimed at mobilising voters in Plateau State to vote for the governorship and state Assembly candidates of the APC on April 11.
He added that vice president-elect, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will be the chief launcher of the VAPCAPSA campaign.

The chairman of the event will be former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, with Honourable Ghali Umar Na’Abba, a former speaker, House of Representatives, as the guest speaker.

http://www.punchng.com/news/gov-election-dont-be-discouraged-muazu-begs-pdp-members/

The National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu, has appealed to members of the party not to be discouraged with the outcome of the presidential election which the party lost to the All Progressives Congress.

He said next week’s governorship election will certainly provide the party a soft-landing after conceding the Presidency to the All Progressives Congress on March 28, 2015.
He asked them to pick up “the pieces and ensure that we return quickly to our old winning ways,” adding that there should be no room for voter apathy, which he said was a major factor that made the PDP lost the presidential election.

He said, “While our opponents were savouring their famous victory, we should out flank them and corner at least two thirds of the states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“This is not an impossible target if we return to our elements with immediate effect. We have done it before and we can do it again. Nothing will be sweeter than PDP taking Lagos, our own Rivers State and Imo.
“Our candidates in these states are first class materials who have fully penetrated the political structures of those states and are set to win.

“Our target in this remaining election should be to retain our present states and then sink our teeth into the heart of our political opponents and show that their presidential victory is nothing more than a one-off that won’t be repeated in a long while.”

He said he had reminded the party’s governorship candidates that “one thing that won’t happen in this race is the so-called bandwagon effect. The reason is simple. Our party is used to bouncing back whenever we experience a setback.”

The former Governor of Bauchi State added that the PDP in the past 16 years of democracy has maintained fair play consistently, which he said the APC admitted in its response to President Jonathan’s speech conceding to President-elect,
General Muhammdu Buhari.

Why we dumped Buhari for Jonathan – Gani Adamson March 16, 2015 at 1:27 pm in News

…says Tibubu has lost focus
DAUD OLATUNJI
ABEOKUTA – The National Cordinator of Oodua Peoples’ Congress, Chief Gani Adams has explained that his group resolved to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term, because of the promise to implement the report of national confab.
Adams also explained that, the OPC decided to dump former Lagos State governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tibubu for the People’s Democratic Party candidate because the former governor had lost the focus.
The OPC leader said this, during the Olokun festival and 2015 Lisabi day held in Abeokuta , Weekend, describing the festival as very important to Yoruba race.
While fielding questions with newsmen on the coming elections, Adams disclosed that, most groups have adopted President Jonathan for second term because of the pledge to implement 633 recommendations of the confab.
According to him, If it is the wish of President Jonathan to implement the outcome of the National Conference, let him be the President for a second term. That’s our position. That’s the position of OPC. Gani Adams, Fasehun; that’s the position of Afenifere. That’s the position of the Yoruba Council of Elders, that’s the position of many self-determination groups.
“Yet some civil society groups have kept quiet on these issues. So, we need to move this country forward on the basis of structure and not about saying Buhari will come to perform miracle. When Buhari was in power, it was Buhari/Idiagbon government, not only Buhari. Idiagbon did much of the job in government. Buhari was just the administrator. Idiagbon was the master-strategist of that government”, he said .
While explaining the reason the OPC dumped Tinubu’s party, for Jonathan, Adams said ” and my brother, Tinubu ,was the one that said that it’s a diversionary tactics .Tinubu was one of the people we learnt true Federalism from. I learnt true Federalism from Tinubu. We saw him as a hero 12 years ago, but , a sudden change in his ideology gave me a serious thought. I don’t have any serious issue about them because I’m not a government official but notwithstanding I have the right to defend my own future. I’m leading an organization of millions of people and I will not lead them the wrong way”.
Politics › Abia: Workers Get Salaries By Ballot by abu12(op): 5:24pm On Mar 15, 2015

These are, certainly, not the best of times for civil servants in Abia State. While thousands of them were sacked because they are not indigenes of the state, those who are ‘fortunate’ to remain in service are not paid as and when due. Worse still, those who dare to demand the several months of salary arrears they are being owed are harassed, intimidated and/or summarily dismissed. The latest case involves a lecturer at the College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu (names withheld by us) who was fired recently for ‘insulting’ the state governor by appealing to him to facilitate the payment of their backlog of salary arrears through a text message. The said lecturer was interrogated and asked to beg the governor so that the matter would end. But to his utter shock, he was fired a few days later.

However, workers of Bende Local Government Area recently dared the powers-that-be, as it were and took to the streets of Umuahia, the capital of the state to protest against the introduction of a unique formula of sharing the statutory allocation accruing to local governments in the state by balloting.

According to the workers numbering over 500, the ‘Abia formula’ has created confusion in the running of the local government areas in the state. They also protested against the non-payment of four months arrears of salary owed them in 2012.

The unique formula

In October last year, the Abia State government introduced a new system of sharing allocation from the federation account to local government areas in the state. A source explained it thus: “It is known as ‘balloting’. What the new system entails is that whenever the state government receives local governments’ allocation from the federation account, the normal Joint account Committee ((JAC) meeting would be convened.

“At the said JAC meetings, lots would be drawn with ‘yes’ and ‘no’ written on them and put in a ballot box. Then the transition committee chairmen would be called upon to pick. Any local government which is lucky and the TC chairman picks ‘yes’, would get money for the workers’ salary for the given month but those that were not lucky and their chairmen picked ‘No’, would not be paid.”

The recent Bende workers protest was as a result of the JAC meeting held for the sharing of money for the salary of the council workers for the month of December, 2014.
“The TC chairman of Bende LGA ,whose workers were still being owed four months’ salary in 2012, was said to have picked ‘No’ for the month of December.

This simply translated that if they were not lucky during the next balloting which comes up in March this year, their December 2014 salary would not be paid even in May,” the source stated.

So, frustrated by the development, the workers matched from the Bende Local Government headquarters to Government House, Umuahia with the intention of seeing Gov Theodore Orji to intimate him of their suffering. But security men could not allow the workers who carried placards and sang songs of sorrow access to the seat of power.
One of the affected workers, who craved anonymity, lamented: “I have never seen this type of arrangement anywhere before. Local government workers have suffered so much under this government. The past administration in the state never owed us even one month salary, but now we are owed up to four to five months arrears of salary despite the fact that we now have enhanced allocation.

“What we cannot understand is this introduction of giving allocation accruing from the federation account through balloting when, in fact, funds allocated to each council by the Federal Government was enough to pay workers salary.

“We are talking about our December 2014 salary at this time and as we speak, we are not sure it will be paid in April. Our counterparts in other states were paid before Christmas while we celebrated on empty stomachs.”

Another worker said: “We’ve not been paid our December 2014 salary, not to talk of January salary. And from the look of things, we may not be paid the December salary by April because our council picked ‘No’ and our TC chairman is not helping matters by his lackadaisical attitude towards the plight of the workers”.

The workers are also demanding four months of arrears of salary they said they were being owed in 2012. In 2012, council workers embarked on a similar protest and carried a coffin round the streets of Umuahia, praying that those responsible for non-payment of their salaries should die.

Investigations revealed that the new ‘Abia formula’ also applies to ministries and parastatals in the state. The result is that while some are owed for three months, their counterparts have not received their salaries for six months.

But how did the state get to this ugly pass? It was learnt that the state government is indebted to a bank, which receives its money at source, immediately the monthly allocations are made. So, according to sources, the state is virtually run with internally generated revenue.

A teacher in the state also alleged that they were being short-changed in terms of promotion and the entitlements that go with it. Hear her: “If you are promoted in September this year for example, they will start paying your entitlement in January next year.

By so doing, your entitlements will go into somebody’s pocket for four months. And instead of promotion after three years as it ought to be, you will be promoted after four years. So, one year benefits will be lost. In Abia, head you lose, tail you lose.”

Politics › Two Weeks To Polls: Jonathan’s Campaign In Disarray As Buhari Surges by abu12(op): 6:49am On Mar 15, 2015
http://thenationonlineng.net/new/two-weeks-to-polls-jonathans-campaign-in-disarray-as-buhari-surges/

• President sidelines Ahmadu Ali campaign committee

• Eurasia group projects Buhari to win 60% of votes

Things are not adding up for President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his re-election bid with the poll a mere 14 days away.
Suspicion is rife within the party hierarchy, and leaders are pulling in different directions, according to presidency and party sources.

So bad is the situation that the President’s campaign has split into five with the president himself taking his destiny in his own hand by personally criss-crossing the country to woo traditional rulers, opinion moulders, youth and women leaders with a view to salvaging the situation.
Shortly after his nomination by the PDP for the race, President Jonathan set up a Presidential Campaign Council led by Dr. Ahmadu Ali to co-ordinate the campaign nationwide.

But complaints and field reports reaching the president from the states convinced him that the council was far from effective.
In came the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, who, sources said, began to ‘remote control’ the campaign council.

Soon, four other main groups, all purporting to work for the president’s election emerged.
These are: the PDP Governors’ Forum; the PDP initiative; and the strategic team being driven by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim/ ministers/ Chief E.K. Clark/ and other motley support groups.

A party source familiar with the situation said: “The struggle for personal benefits has overshadowed the target of winning the election. Virtually everyone wants to make money from the campaign as if there will be no tomorrow or as if we are going to lose at the poll.

“The president saw the gaps and decided to personally drive his own campaign.”
The situation was not helped by poll results before the postponement of the February election that the President was heading for a humiliating defeat.

He quickly took over the campaign and has been jetting round the country to prop up his image.
“If the president tells you his experience in the last three weeks that he has been shuttling about, you will appreciate that he would have lost the February 14 election woefully,” was the way another source put it yesterday.

Only last Thursday, the Deputy Director-General of the PDP Campaign Organisation, Professor Tunde Adeniran, accused the PDP of doing little to promote Jonathan.
“If we continue to show this man has not done anything, others will capitalise on it. The party is not showing enough in this regard. The president’s achievement is undersold and in some cases not sold at all. In some places they ask, so Jonathan has done so?” he said.

Within the last three weeks, the president has visited the Southwest, which he sees as the zone holding the ace in the election, at least four times to plead for support.
During the first visit, he spent a whole week in Lagos meeting Obas, youths, market women and other interest groups. He also visited churches for prayers.

On the second visit, he went to Oyo town to see theAlaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, and Ile-Ife on the third visit where some Obas were gathered to pray for him
He returned to the zone on Thursday to seek the support of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who told him that he should not expect any Oba to campaign for him.
“In Ijebu here, it is not possible for any Oba- not even in Ijebu, in Yorubaland- to go out and say vote for this, vote for that. That person is looking for trouble. But they should give them (the politicians) the opportunity to present their programmes so that the people can make up their minds on what to do,” the Awujale told him.

Comments by the president’s wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, during campaigns are also believed to be alienating sections of the country from her husband.
One of such was the statement she made recently in Port Harcourt that northerners are breeding children they could not cater for, hence the menace ofAlmajiris.
“Our men no dey born shildren throway for street. We no dey like the people for that side,”she said in pidgin English.
Apparently haunted by the statement, Mrs. Jonathan last week was absent at a women’s campaign in Minna, Niger State.

Another was when she declared in Asaba, Delta State that the APC presidential flag bearer, General Muhammadu Buhari was “brain dead.”
She was also in Benin, Edo State yesterday where she said that her husband must complete “our two terms” in office.
Meanwhile, the Eurasia Group, the world’s leading global political risk research and consulting firm, has tipped the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, to win this month’s election.

The firm projects that the APC flag bearer has a 60 per cent probability to beat President Goodluck Jonathan in the election.
The firm’s Africa practice head and analyst, Philippe de Pontet, wrote yesterday that the electoral map is tilting to Buhari in swing regions in the Southwest and the Middle Belt.

He said that with Buhari in the saddle, investors could expect business-oriented policies.
He adds: “The election will still be difficult to call, but our expectation of a narrow Jonathan win was predicated on several factors that are losing some saliency late in the campaign.

“Chief among them is the incumbency and financial advantages of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). While this still helps Jonathan, its impact is blunted by the intensity of support for Buhari, lackluster grassroots campaigning by the PDP, and new anti-rigging measures by the electoral commission.

“New permanent voting cards and card readers will sharply reduce the level of rigging seen in 2011, when Jonathan beat Buhari in a landslide …

“While we expected the electoral map to favour Jonathan, current trends suggest that the swing regions may side with Buhari, including the Christian-majority and heavily-populated southwest around Lagos. That could be the decisive demographic factor in the election …”

A local think tank, the Centre for Public Policy Alternatives, gave Buhari a 58% to 32% lead in Lagos State, where Jonathan won the last election. Eurasia Group thinks Jonathan’s approval rating is below the 40% threshold under which incumbents have a hard time getting reelected.

“Despite some important military gains against [the Islamic terror group] Boko Haram in the northeast, and a partial exoneration of its oil revenue management in a recent PWC audit, [Jonathan's] Peoples Democratic Party is starting to look desperate. … [But] it is not clear … that Buhari has a strong economic policy orientation. This uncertainty is a chief risk for investors.”

Jonathan is likely to contest an unfavorable outcome, especially a close election, and that could mean protracted violence.
“The reason we aren’t upgrading Nigeria’s outlook to positive, however, rests in the potential for an oil disruption and the likely pushback to Buhari’s policy agenda in a highly polarized political climate. His victory is likely to unleash a resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta (Jonathan’s home region) that targets the oil sector. Former Delta militants have threatened to blow up oil pipelines, platforms, and personnel as in the past when they routinely took up to 500,000 barrels per day offline. The All Progressives Congress has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of taking political advantage of calamities that have befallen Nigeria under his watch, saying giving N5m toeach family that lost a relative in the Immigration recruitment exercise after one year is not only belated but aimed at soliciting votes. In a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party wondered why it took thePresident one year to act on the promise he made to the families, adding that but for the forthcoming elections, the President would have simply ignored the families, “in his usual style.””The truth is that this President was forced to act because of the elections.

Otherwise, why has it taken one year for the President to redeem his promise to the bereaved families? Why has hisAdministration not sanctioned those who sent innocent job seekers to their early graves after extorting them? Why is the Interior Minister,Mr. Abba Moro, who presided over the deaths, still in office, virtually dancing on the graves of those innocent youths?”Sunday, March 15th, will mark one year since those vibrant youths were lured to their deaths by a callous federal government that failed them in all ramifications, including the security of their lives and the assurance of their welfare, the raison d’etre of any government.

It is therefore utterly reprehensible, immoral and wicked for the same administration to seek to make political gains out of the needless tragedy,” it said.APC said President Jonathan, “in his desperation for re-election, has also sought to take political advantage of other tragedies, including the Buni Yadi massacre of school children and the abduction of Chibok girls.”After refusing to even visit the families of those school children in Buni Yadi and Chibok, the President suddenly woke up and startedsending delegations to meet with them, all this because he needs votes. As a parent himself, how will the President feel if he had been so treated? Why must the President put his re-election over and above everything else, including the welfare and security of Nigerians? Is there no limit to desperation.”

It said Nigerians are keenly aware of the fact that this President has suddenly woken up from his deep slumber and become artificiallyhyperactive, making repeated visits to regions that he had neglected in the past six years and doling out hard currencies even at a time the Naira was taking a beating, all for election purposes.”No one is fooled by the antics of a desperate President, and in the fullness of time,

Nigerians will show President Jonathan and his cohorts that they are not impressed by his pretend governance,” APCsaid.
