http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/senate-presidency-north-west-caucus-adopts-lawan/208210/ The North-west caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Senate on Thursday adopted Senator Ahmad Lawan as its candidate for the position of senate president. The caucus of the North-west, which is the only zone with seven states, is the largest political bloc in the senate with 21 out of the 109-member senate. Of the 21 seats, only senator-elect, Danjuma La’ah, representing Kaduna South senatorial district was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). THISDAY gathered that the meeting of the caucus held for over three hours early Thursday at the Kaduna Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, under the chairmanship of Senator Abu Ibrahim. Sources close to the meeting said the caucus “carefully considered the candidacy of contenders for the Senate presidency of the 8th Senate and after a critical analysis, unanimously settled for Senator Lawan, Chairman of the present Senate Committee on Public Accounts.” Senator Ibrahim is from Katsina, home state of president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari and doubles as vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications. Chairman, Committee on States and Local Governments, Kano State-born Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya and Senator-elect, Adamu Aliero, served as alternate chairmen. Aliero served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). THISDAY gathered that 17 of the 20 APC senators from the North-west zone endorsed Lawan for the senate presidency. Kano State Governor and senator-elect, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, and former Governor of Zamfara State, Senator Sani Yerima, were reportedly absent at the meeting but reportedly sent messages of support for Lawan. A source at the meeting blamed Yerima’s absence on the death of the senator’s elder sister last Wednesday. A senator at the meeting told THISDAY that the North-west caucus was most comfortable with the Lawan’s candidacy. He added: “Besides, he has promised to render total support for the agenda of change of the APC which the North west has always championed. “The caucus also impressed it on Lawan to support the anti-corruption agenda of Buhari of which he promised to do.” He continued: “You know that out of 109 senators, Lawan needs just 55 votes to clinch the senate presidency. With my caucus (North-west) already guaranteeing him one-third of the required number, it would be easy ride for him. “If you add the endorsement he got early in the week from the South-west APC caucus in the senate to what we gave him today (yesterday) it may have nailed the coffin of any aspirant for the position of senate president. |

http://www.punchng.com/news/consider-ndigbo-for-appointments-obiano-coalition-beg-buhari/ Anambra State Governor, Willy Obiano, has urged the President-elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd), to appoint Igbo into prominent positions while forming his cabinet. He said the forthcoming Buhari’s administration would require the support of all Nigerians irrespective of their party affiliations to success. Obiano spoke after a closed-door meeting with the President-elect at his private residence in Abuja on Friday. The governor said he was in Abuja not only to congratulate the President-elect and reassure him of the support of the South-East, but also to plead with him to consider Anambra indigenes for appointments. Obiano said, “I am also here to reassure him that Anambra and the South-East would support him. I also pleaded with him on some pressing problems that are of importance to the South-East like the second Niger bridge and some of the federal roads. “We also pleaded in the area of appointment for the people of Anambra and of course, for people from the South-East be it ministerial, ambassadorial and what have you.” The governor, however, dismissed insinuation that his visit was part of consultations to pave way for him to defect to the All Progressives party. Similarly, a coalition of Igbo groups demanded that the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives should be zoned to the South-East in the next political dispensation. The groups are Igbo Youth Vanguard, Abia Democratic Initiative, Imo Professionals for Democracy, United Igbo Traders Association and South East Students Unions. In a statement signed by their leader, Mr. Chikezie Emezuo and Coordinator of the Imo Professional for Democracy, the groups explained that it was against the principle of federal character and national justice for the North to keep the Presidency, the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives positions. Stressing that any move to marginalise Ndigbo will not be accepted, the groups decried a purported zoning formula where the South-East could be schemed out of the leadership of the national legislature. They expressed regret that the Igbo were being reminded that they were defeated and be treated as second class citizens at a time the negative effect of the civil war was wearing out. They said it would be wrong for the Igbo to be denied top positions in the National Assembly because majority of them voted for the Peoples Democratic Party in the last general elections. |

He must be a confused man Igbo groups demand Speaker, House of Reps ByOur ReporteronApril 21, 2015COVER,Politics •Reject apc zoning formula Prominent Igbo groups and organizations have risen in condemnation of the recent zoning formula adopted by the All Progressive Congress (APC) of which the South-East was excluded from the leadership of the national legislature, describing it as unacceptable. They have consequently demanded that the post of Speaker of House of Representatives be zoned to the South East, noting that it was against national justice and the principle of federal character for the North to keep the Presidency, the Senate president and the Speaker, House of Representatives”. Addressing newsmen in Enugu yesterday, a coalition of five Igbo groups, Igbo Youth Vanguard, Abia Democratic Initiative, Imo Professionals for Democracy, United Igbo Traders Association and South East Students Unions, deplored what they termed as the return to the “evil years of marginalization ofNdigbo”. In the text press conference read by Comrade Chikezie Emezuo of Imo Professionals for Democracy, the Igbo groups urged the President-Elect, Gen Mohammadu Buhari to quickly put the machinery in motion to halt this exclusionist policy being hatched by enemies ofNdigboto keep them away from the governance of their country. They noted that it was regrettable that when Igbo were thinking that “the negative effect of the civil war was wearing out, we are once again being reminded that we were defeated in the war and should be treated as second class citizens”. They argued that it was offensive to human dignity and equity for Igbo to be denied top positions in the National Assembly because majority of them voted for the rival People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’. The groups described as “untenable and unreasonable comparison of the situation in the South west between 2011 and 2015 and what is being plotted againstNdigbo, insisting that Yoruba leaders, and not the PDP, foisted the situation on their people” |
Vanguard newspaper version - By Esther Onyegbula LAGOS—No fewer than five persons were injured as two groups of traders in Ladipo Market clashed over the just-concluded governorship election in Lagos State. It was gathered that a vice chairman of an automobile association allegedly led a group of armed hoodlums to harass traders and passers-by. The traders called on Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, to come to their rescue as their lives were under threat for refusing to support the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Mr. Christopher Nzeribe, a trader, said: “They have told us that they would make the market uncomfortable for those of us that did not support the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State. “We urged the state government to call the executives of the market to order, because majority of us who were traders in the market were only looking for our daily bread.” Another trader, who simply identified himself as Okafor, said: “Before the 2015 general elections, there was peace and harmony among the traders in the market. The executives of the market have been intimidating and harassing us for supporting the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, since after the election. We cannot trade and walk freely in the market any more. “Five traders are lying critically ill at a private hospital receiving treatment for the injury they sustained from the attacked unleashed on them by the hoodlums of the executives.” A woman that sells drinks, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “What I am witnessing as a trader in the market is becoming unbearable as all my assorted drinks were carted away by the hoodlums loyal to the central market executives.” WhenVanguardvisited the market, Policemen from Alakara Division and OP-MESA were on ground to prevent further breakdown of law and order. When the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kenneth Nwsosu, was contacted on the incident, he promised to call back. At press time, he had not called. |
SA are creating jobs for nigerians through big investment but nigerians are going to SA to do menial jobs, which SA are supposed to do. Ojukwu people are there to even sell pure water, wash cars, sell drugs and they claim to be investor. SA shld chase any nigerian who is not employing it citizen or contributing meaningful out of their country, likewise in nigeria shld do same. They are parasite nonsense. |

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/why-must-a-governor-choose-violence-as-a-religion-ekiti-apc/ The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has praised drivers and motorcycle riders associations for refusing to obey Governor Ayodele Fayose’s inciting order to foment trouble over alleged plan by the 19 APC lawmakers to storm the House of Assembly with thugs to impeach him and asked Why must a governor choose violence as a religion?. The governor had yesterday made a live broadcast on the state media urging drivers, motorbike operators, market women and workers to rise up to protect the mandate they gave him. Few minutes later, state radio and television stations ran public announcements intermittently urging drivers and motorcycle operators to be on the look-out for strange faces invading the town to work for the APC lawmakers while also urging them to mobilise to the House of Assembly to prevent the governor’s impeachment. But on Monday, the drivers and many okada riders refused to protest, saying that they would not be used as cannon fodder while the governor’s children were kept in safety and luxury abroad. In a statement, Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, praised the transport workers for their courage and wisdom, saying it is callous for a man to put fellow human beings in harm’s way over protection of his interest while keeping his own children out of danger to enjoy safety in luxury. “We praised the drivers and motorcycle operators for their courage and wisdom. Fayose is used to protecting his own interest and keeping his children in safety while he distributes guns to the children of others to foment trouble. “The day he was first impeached in 2006, he asked his supporters to meet at Fajuyi to confront the soldiers. It is later that his supporters discovered that the governor had bolted in the booth of his car to safety while his supporters were tear-gassed with several of them wounded,” Olatubosun said. APC spokesman said the matter at hand was not about partisanship but about the abuse of the constitution, and wondered why Fayose believed he must win through violence all the time he tramples on the constitution. “He first led thugs to sack the court and beat up a judge while court records in the Chief Judge’s office were torn. The Chief Judge’s Secretary was beaten. Now, he openly made a live broadcast in the state media inciting his supporters to an act of insurrection by disallowing the lawmakers to do their lawful duties. “Even during Sunday service in the church, Fayose, to the shock of everyone, was inciting worshipers to protect the mandate they gave him through violent resistance to the lawmakers. Why must a governor choose violence as a religion? “He effectively grounded the judiciary and now it is the turn of the parliament. Nigerian democracy is on trial and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is in chains if Fayose can single-handedly cripple these two sacred democratic institutions through violence and he appears winning all the way,” Olatubosun said. He wondered why Fayose preferred violent option in the resolution of constitutional and democratic matters. He also asked Ekiti elders preaching peace to Speaker Adewale Omirin that they must first start with Fayose on the need to embrace peace by operating within the ambit of the law instead of inciting people into violence. Olatubosun also regretted that the governor’s inciting media statement had created panic among parents who kept their wards at home for fear of attacks on their way to schools. |

http://www.punchng.com/columnists/etcetera/igbo-leaders-a-disgrace/ I was told that every Igboman who heard Ojukwu’s speech after the Biafran war was filled with a renewed sense of pride and hope. A hope that one day the Igbo nation will rise and become a force of reckoning not just in Nigeria but in the entire black world. I have read that speech over and over and each time I read through, I am filled with pride and imagination of how those who heard the words pouring out of the mouth of the warlord himself must have felt. Before going any further, let me recount a little part of what the late sage said while addressing the press: “In the three years of the war, necessity gave birth to invention. During those three years of heroic bound, we leapt across the great chasm that separates knowledge from know-how. We built rockets, and we designed and built our own delivery systems. We guided our rockets. We guided them far, we guided them accurately. For three years, blockaded without hope of import, we maintained all our vehicles. The state extracted and refined petrol, individuals refined petrol in their back gardens. We built and maintained our airports, maintained them under heavy bombardment. Despite the heavy bombardment, we recovered so quickly after each raid that we were able to maintain the record for the busiest airport in the continent of Africa. We spoke to the world through telecommunication system engineered by local ingenuity; the world heard us and spoke back to us! We built armoured car tanks. We modified aircraft from trainer to fighters, from passenger aircraft to bombers. In the three years of freedom we had broken the technological barrier. In three years we became the most civilised, the most technologically advanced black people on earth.” Ojukwu, with those few lines, defined the ingenuity and never-say-die spirit God has embedded in the marrows of the Igboman. But my question for Ndigbo is, where has this ingenuity for which the entire world has given them a standing ovation, gone? Why can’t it be used today to enhance the cause of Ndigbo? Can’t we re-enact the same war time feat to launch ourselves back to reckoning again in Nigeria and in the entire black world? Since Ojukwu died, Ndigbo have been like sheep without a shepherd. Those who we thought could take up the mantle of leadership are nothing but selfish entities who care for nothing but their personal interest. As I am writing this article, I just got words that a senator in Imo State has been discovered as a saboteur working against the interest of his people because he has been promised to be made Senate president in the new political dispensation which begins on May 29. What is it with Ndigbo and greed? How long are we going to kill ourselves? Isn’t it a gargantuan shame that a tribe as populous as Ndigbo can’t provide a single individual that is seen to be credible enough to be elected president of Nigeria? A casual observation of the performances of the governors of the south eastern states will reveal their level of under-performance since 1999. Case point, take Aba which has failed to enjoy any meaningful development since the 1929 Aba women riot. The place is a total mess. What have the governors done with what has been accruing to the state in the last 16 years of democratic rule? The fact that these individuals who have mismanaged fortunes of the state consider themselves fit to even contest election is a slap on the faces of Ndigbo. Ndigbo, are we cursed? The red-cap goons known as Ohaneze do nothing but crawl from one place to another offering themselves for sale and for use. This has been their money-making scheme for too long and it can no longer hold water. Can’t we take a cue from the style Dangote adopted and made a kill? The Yoruba have already adopted it and it is working. We have to restrategise to become that economic power house we crave. The idea that every Igboman who makes money whether through his ingenuity or by accident becomes misguided and begins to push for political office even though they are clearly not professional politicians should be discarded. We hear of Dangote, the Dantatas, Otedola, Mike Adenuga, the Okoyas, where are the Igbo equivalent in terms of their organisational set-up? Most of our businesses are largely one-man businesses and whenever the founder dies, the whole thing dies. Ndigbo must do away with their selfishness and personal greed, otherwise we will continue to languish as a people. We must redirect our thoughts away from the deeply engrossed notion of “to make it in life,” “we must make money at all cost.” What Ndigbo should learn from the just concluded elections is that without a harmony of opinion, all our efforts will yield nothing. Igbo kwezuenu. |
