Rexraph18: Seriously olx was a life saver then.. my ads were sold out in practically 2days at the right price without paying a dime for any premium services..( na me sef de dash olx money then, cos even with the free mode, I will sell my stuff quick, I had my own catchy / juicy words) All I got from Jiji then were scammers, one who used voodoo to take my iPhone 7plus and another my tecno camon x pro..
Is there a way you can do something about this two cases anything at all..
Now my complaints:
1. Too laggy; one time I wanted to upload pictures through the app, I had a battery life of about 65% but funny enough my pictures didn’t upload till my battery got to 0%
2. Is it a crime if I decide not to pay for premium services.. why d numerous calls from your customer Service (Jiji de call person pass Airtel ) At least, I should be convinced that my ad would perform better with premium services. I have had an ad on for over a month, a mere 70 views and like 5 number views with just one person actually calling and pricing me 1/3 of the amount I put up.
3. I need to be able to filter ads by time posted nearest to me, with olx I was able to do that then.
4. Even as a seller, I think I buy more online than I sell sef, with olx, I could just search for whatever my buyers want within my city (ph) negotiate and buy ASAP without having to come to nairaland, and most times wait for 2-3days before getting what I want delivered to me as most of my reliable sellers are Lagos based. N:B, as a buyer, I will never buy from someone whose ad is premium (I feel they have too much money to throw around, I rather look for those with normal ads and buy from) call me anything, I know but at least I generate traffic for you by visiting your site daily.
Finally. Just like one of my bosses said, bring back the olx franchise, manage it by controlling the board or something, anything, just let it remain the olx we used to know or una kuku close jaree.. the thing done tire me. ahah same conclusions i derived just last week here. Anyone with that vip or premium sticker won't get any patronage from me. If being greedy is their means of making money then lets see how it plays put when they get exposed soon. |

EgunMogaji2: I think you’re missing my point. That I recommend that the building job be given to an Architect is not saying that he’s the one building the house. He’s merely the lead person and who brings in the other trades like structural engineer and masons, as an example.
The piss poor finished houses in Nigeria is as a result of lack of proper interpretation by masons with no architectural oversight. In my opinion. clients understands what they are getting into when they have a mason handle their contract so when such building falls like the house of cards they can easily move on. Some clients have this belief that someone who has built over 10 houses knows the job when it could be that the person is just doing rubbish and getting away with it. Clients only do drawings for drawing sake, what they do on site is totally different. I keep saying this any engineer or contractor who doesn't know how to design or produce drawings shouldn't be executing any construction job. How do you know what to do when you can make the drawing presentation? Structural analysis are done with the help of analysis softwares with a combination of engineering experience and manual calculations too. The software can give Y16 but a structural engineer will have some reasons to up it. When the project begins the contractor decides to use Y12 and his reason is that the hotel he built on a lagoon was done with Y12 and it stood firmly |

Anyone with basic construction knowledge and can properly interpret a plan can build a house. The collapse we hear of today are as a result of the massive frauds committed on site by the builders. No structural or civil engineer will risk his career by putting less reinforcements on the structural drawings. The problems is either from the client who wants to save more cash then hire a builder or contractor who tells him the reinforcements on the structural drawings are too much, he can find a way around it and still deliver a quality job that's where the problem begins. What if i say even a copy paste design can still be effective if they are followed on site. Structural drawings says add torsion bars, 3top 16mm reinforcements and 20mm for the gf columns but go to site and you see something totally different, when the building comes down the professionals are being accused when the builder is the one responsible. An architect can build, so also a civil engineer but will they follow what is on paper? That's the question. It says 1:3:6 on the structural notes grade 30 concrete but who does that anymore, they even go as high as 1:10:10 just because they want more bang for their bucks. Alot of clients don't do structural drawings anymore, their contractors have convinced them it's irrelevant. A bongallow was to be increased by a floor the contractor told the client not to worry about the structural design, its a waste of funds. However when it crashes tomorrow who wouldn't be blamed.

OnlineArchitect: It gets really sad when you see things like this happening, you rarely see things like this in the western world were building codes/laws are been adhered to strictly. Disasters like this are avoidable but because of greed building collapse has become a norms in Nigeria. Every building has its structural standards that must be followed to the letter but you'll see engineers on site trying to go against specifications in order to cut costs and make more profits or clients on the order hand telling the engineers to minimize the use of materials so he can save more. Sometimes even when the engineers refuses to compromise on quality the client would tell him to go saying he's too expensive and look for one quack who's ready to do their bidding. It's even more sad that relevant agencies who are supposed to check these irregularities are given stipend and by so doing they forget about it and move on the next site.
I have left construction projects due to the fact that clients wants me to compromise in most cases. There was a project i was handling for a very popular church in 2016 it's an event centre, the structural drawings says a base of 4ft by 4ft is to be used with 16mm reinforcement bars. But these guys came saying using it as specificied will consume much money that they will want me to use 2ft by 2ft base with 12mm reinforcement bars as the columns. Well long story short i left the project as i told them i can't compromise the structural details as regards the building.
It's very important to maintain your integrity as Proffesionals so as not to stain yourself at the long run, forget about the money involved cos it's not worth other people's lives when the damage eventually occurs.
Money can't buy integrity. Rip to those that lost their lives... that's clients scope, they want to cut corners but they need some figure head to take the fall for it. |
Properties › Re: Femi Osibona & Italian Architects At The Top Of Collapsed 21-Storey Building by Abudu2000(m): 4:10pm On Nov 02, 2021 |
ekineme: Most people without engineering or structural knowledge are just speaking out of ignorance.Nigerians are quick to pass judgement. Let me point out few things fyi: 1. No structure of that magnitude will be constructed without a detailed structural design and analysis by a certified structural engineer, this is done using advanced softwares. 2. That certification and approval which most people are basing their argument for condemnation are dependent on the results of the design as stated above. 3.The developer can't use a substandard material or go against the design details knowing the implication of that decision. 4. If the design state Y20 reinforcement rod and the producer uses scrap metal with less tensile strength as but same diameter, this becomes the issue with SON and not the developer because son gave the approval for the existence or importation of all the building materials
My point is that most times the fault lies with the producers of building materials and not the Engineers or the construction team. This same Italian team can construct same building in Italy and it will exceed the functional and structural requirements but if materials are sourced within Nigeria and using same building codes it gives different outcome.
Another angle am also considering is why would the building collapse at the exact time the owner is in the building....it is more than coincidence..... you get my point now. may j ask when last you visited site sir because if you are frequent on a Nigerian site you will know that structural drawings are useless to them. They have even made clients believe the engineers are no more needed on site, i have over 6 designs now on construction, the client refused to do a structural drawing. One of them was a bongallow and the client increased the floor without my permission, they are even using the same 12mm reforcement. I asked the client why and he said the baba has built 6hotels so he knows his onions. Believe me clients are to blame not the structural engineers , alot of structural engineers don't get jobs now and some are broke because the clients refused to follow their specifications and they had to back of the deal. I designed a 1.2m cantilever for a client and the he-goat said he will supervise the project himself. He was even keeping me from his site till one fay i came unannounced, they changed everything on paper, where there were gridlines indicating columns thr baba told him no need for anything there. My conclusion, clients are totally responsible for building collapse because everyone on the team does what they say. |

twinskenny: right the two remaining building standing should be check clients of nowadays have totally no regards for quality. An architect will recommend a structural drawing and competent engineer to see the project through but a supposedly educated client will be talking like one without brain cells. Some clients are not even scared for their lives at all, especially when they are not the one to live in the proposed property. I could mention about 6 engineers here on nairaland who studied nothing about building infact they didn't do science in secondary school. They are even being championed as professionals on property section hahaha You are right amingo, looking at those colums how they are tilted sideways that other building is a catastrophe waiting to happen. |

Ynix: You made a wonderful post here I remember my undergraduates days in the late 2000s, I did a lot of research about america most especially their university, being a civil engineering student. It was surprising for me to discover that as at then in 2008, Havard University was the 24th biggest economy in USA. If a university can achieve that how much more a state like California that was open to all as long as you are coming in to create value. In the 1900s California was referred to as the State of Opportunities, everyone were pouring into it even pastors, I remember that Four Square started and became popular right from California. I want to also shock you sir that when it comes to some crops like Almond among some others, the same California is the highest producer of such farm products in the world and to further prove the op right what's a civil engineering, a whole civil engineering student be researching on economics and economies for his/her project works when you should be doing researches on structures and bridges designs, perhaps how to make more durable bridges at a cheaper rate. But no, they sent you on a wild goose chase. |
