Foreign Affairs / Egyptian boy hailed a 'hero' for calling police in Italy During Hijacking by AbujaBlue: 11:32pm On Mar 20, 2019
The father of a 13-year-old Egyptian boy who called the police aboard the school bus that was hijacked and later set ablaze by a Senegalese bus driver said on Thursday he would like to see his son get Italian citizenship.

“My son did his duty, it would be nice if he could now get Italian citizenship,” said Khalid Shehata, the father of Ramy, who hid his phone from the bus driver when he confiscated them from other students and was able to call emergency services from inside the vehicle.

Police spokesman Marco Palmieri said the driver — 47-year-old Ousseynou Sy, a Senegalese with Italian citizenship — told officers after he was arrested: “Stop the deaths at sea, I'll carry out a massacre."

Ramy, who’s been hailed a hero by his classmates, was born in Italy but does not have Italian nationality.

“We're Egyptians, I arrived in Italy in 2001, my son was born here in 2005 but we're still waiting for the official document,” said Shehata, adding they would really like to stay in Italy.

Deputy Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, said they would “evaluate” the request for citizenship.

The boy told Ansa that he wanted to be a Carabiniere when he grows up.

“He tied us to the floor covered in petrol and took our phones away so we couldn’t call the police,” one of the 51 children held hostage in a school bus set on fire by a driver of Senegalese origin who wanted revenge for migrants “dying at sea”.

A Senegalese man abducted 51 children when he hijacked an Italian school bus and set the vehicle alight in a protest over migrant deaths in the Mediterranean.

Ousseynou Sy, originally Senegalese but with Italian citizenship, stopped the bus he was driving, with two classes of high school students on board.

He was said to have ordered the children's hands to be bound and threatened to kill them and himself during the drive, before setting the vehicle on fire when he was stopped by a police blockade today.

Officers broke the glass in the back door of the bus and got all the passengers to safety without serious injury before the flames destroyed the vehicle, authorities said.

As he was apprehended, the driver said he was protesting migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, Commander Luca De Marchis told Sky TG24.

The incident happened in San Donato Milanese, a town near Milan, Italy.

The 47-year-old father of two, whose ex-wife is Italian, has been arrested and charged with carnage and kidnapping, worsened by the fact that most of the people involved are under age.

De Marchis told Sky TG24 that the driver, an Italian citizen of Senegalese origin in his 40s, threatened the passengers, telling them that 'no one would survive today' as he commandeered the bus carrying two middle-school classes in Cremona province, some 25 miles (40 kilometres) from Milan.

ANSA quoted one of the students as saying the driver took all their phones and ordered the chaperones to bind the students' hands with cable ties, threatening to spill gas and set the bus ablaze.

The student, whose name was not given, said a classmate managed to conceal his phone.

Authorities said that an adult called an emergency operator, while one of the students called a parent, and they alerted authorities, who set up roadblocks.

A five-year-old boy who was rescued after almost 24 hours lost in the desert in western Argentina has been released from hospital.

Benjamín Sánchez went missing during a family trip on Sunday and was found by a team of volunteers 21km (13 miles) from where he was last seen.

"I was cold, I slept badly, leaning on a rock," said the boy, who was wearing only a T-shirt and light trousers.

He said he had survived by eating grass and drinking water from a stream.

After being rescued on Monday afternoon, the child was taken by helicopter to a hospital in San Juan suffering slight dehydration and was released on Tuesday.

'I got scared'

Benjamín was found sitting under a tree by a motorcyclist after a search operation that involved some 1,000 police, civil defence officials and volunteers.

"My mum was chasing me and I started running. At first I could hear her but then I got lost," he told El Clarín newspaper (in Spanish).

"I leaned on a stone, started calling her, but she didn't hear me... I [started] walking towards a light that was very far away."

Temperatures in the region this time of the year vary from 30C (86F) during the day to around zero at night.

Alberto Ontiveros, who found the boy, said wild pumas roam the area.

"[Benjamín] was tired... The only thing he was asking for was water."

Sports / Police Detain Birmingham Steward After He Assaults Grealish (Photo, Video) by AbujaBlue: 10:58pm On Mar 10, 2019
Birmingham City steward appears to be led away by police during Jack Grealish goal celebrations

Grealish celebrated his opening goal by diving into the away fans

The Second City derby was tarnished by an act of ugly cowardice in the first half on Sunday afternoon, as a Birmingham City fan ran onto the pitch and punched Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish from behind.

The fan was removed and has since been arrested.

It seems like the Gods of footballing narrative were watching the game too, as Grealish went on to score the only goal of the game, right in front of his adoring travelling fans.

As anyone would in his situation, Grealish celebrated by jumping into the crowd, overcome with joy having dished out the best possible revenge.

During the scenes, stewards guarding the away end gradually sent the Villa players back onto the pitch, as is their duty.

But one steward appeared to be led away by police, after seemingly taking an over-zealous approach to returning Grealish to the pitch.

Police later confirmed they gave the steward a talking to before releasing him.

Sports / Legends Cantona, Ferguson And Solskjaer Pose After Win Vs PSG (photo) by AbujaBlue: 7:21pm On Mar 07, 2019
If you were in any doubt as to how much Manchester United's Champions League victory over Paris-St Germain meant to the club, the image of three legends celebrating in the dressing room tells you all you need to know.

Eric Cantona, Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, three men who have earned their place in the United history books, toasted a memorable night at Parc des Princes.

It was a victory that echoed of a night in Barcelona 20 years ago, when, with Ferguson at the United helm, Solskjaer scored one of the club's most famous goals in injury time to beat Bayern Munich in the final.

Almost two decades later, Solskjaer is caretaker manager at Old Trafford and his charges rolled back the years as Marcus Rashford's injury-time penalty capped a remarkable turnaround as United reached the quarter-finals at the expense of shell-shocked PSG.

"That's the Champions League, it's what it does," said Solskjaer. "It's this club, it's what we do, that's Manchester United."

Frenchman Cantona who helped United win four league titles and two FA Cups during the 1990s, added: "I love it. I'm so happy."

Two Romelu Lukaku goals and Rashford's 94th-minute spot-kick meant United became the first club in the competition's history to overturn a 2-0 or greater first-leg home deficit.

BBC Radio 5 Live football correspondent John Murray said it was "one of the great results by any English club in the Champions League".

"This will very much go on to the list of great comebacks."

At least 23 people, including a six year old boy, have been killed as tornadoes struck Lee County in eastern Alabama, authorities say.

County Sheriff Jay Jones said there had been "catastrophic" damage and there were fears more bodies would be found. Dozens are thought to have been hurt.

Rescue efforts have been halted until dawn due to the danger of searching in the dark.

The most devastating tornadoes struck the area around Beauregard, carving a path at least half a mile (0.8km) wide.

The National Weather Service (NWS) made a classification of at least EF-3 - meaning winds of up to 165mph (266km/h).

It warned people to "stay out of damaged areas so first responders could do their job".

Where have the tornadoes struck?

The area around Beauregard, about 60 miles (95km) east of Alabama's state capital, Montgomery, appears to have borne the brunt. The tornadoes there struck at about 14:00 (20:00 GMT) on Sunday.

Footage showed snapped poles, roads littered with debris and houses without roofs.

Sheriff Jones said some homes had been reduced to slabs. Authorities fear the death toll could rise.

Local resident Scott Fillmer said: "Everything just kind of went dark, when it was almost like night outside. And it's that old cliché that it sounds like a freight train coming, well that's what it sounded like."

Residents of Smiths Station told local TV they had seen businesses destroyed there. A large bar called the Buck Wild Saloon had had its roof torn off.

Sheriff Jones said: "The challenge is the sheer volume of the debris where all the homes were located. It's the most I've seen that I can recall."

Tornado warnings were also issued for Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. Footage showed smashed buildings and snapped trees in Talbotton, about 80 miles south of Atlanta.

Tornadoes were also reported in Walton County and Cairo in northern Florida.

What do we know about the casualties?

All of the deaths so far have been in Lee County. Authorities say they are still working to identify the victims and the injured.

One of the dead in Beauregard was an eight year old, family members said.

"We've never had a mass fatality situation, that I can remember, like this in my lifetime," Lee County coroner Bill Harris said.

He said on Sunday evening: "We've still got people being pulled out of rubble. We're going to be here all night."

Alabama meteorologist Eric Snitil tweeted that there were more deaths in Lee County in one day due to a tornado than in the entirety of the US in 2018.

East Alabama Medical Center said it was treating more than 40 people injured by the extreme weather, and was expecting more.

The National Weather Service said it would send three survey teams to assess the damage caused by tornadoes across Alabama on Monday.

The extreme weather also tore down trees and destroyed homes in western Georgia.

Sports / David Beckham's Children Pay Tribute As LA Galaxy Unveil Statue (Photos, Video) by AbujaBlue: 6:46pm On Mar 03, 2019
David Beckham has had a statue of himself unveiled in Los Angeles as he attended the LA Galaxy's 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire on the opening day of the 2019 MLS season.

The former England captain played for LA Galaxy between 2007 and 2012 during the twilight years of his stellar career, leading them to two championships, and he is still held in high regard in California.

During a special ceremony ahead of the game in California, Beckham's statue was unveiled as he was joined by wife Victoria at a special ceremony.

During a speech, Beckham insisted he wanted to help the American league grow and insisted there is still 'a long way to go'.

He said: 'My commitment to this league and country was always a lot more than on the field,' Beckham said as he addressed the crowd.

'I wanted to grow the game and play a small part in growing this league and making it bigger. I think we have been successful but there still is a long way to go but I think we are very happy with the growth over the past 10 years.'

Beckham's signing in 2007 gave higher prominence to the league internationally as more top players arrived and fan interest increased.

'No doubt our league wouldn't be what it is today if David didn't make that decision,' MLS commissioner Don Garber added. 'At that time we were a fledgling business and trying to figure out if soccer would make it in America. His signing told the world that Major League Soccer could be the league of choice.'

Beckham admitted he felt a little sheepish to be the subject of the Galaxy's first statue in their legends plaza, which is located outside their stadium's main entrance.

The artists responsible for capturing the essence of the former Galaxy, Real Madrid and Manchester United star were Julie and Omri Amrany.

Beckham's Children, and Snoop Dog, paid tribute:

Foreign Affairs / UK Police Reject Recruit Because He Is A 'White, Heterosexual Male' (Photo) by AbujaBlue: 10:53pm On Feb 23, 2019
A police force which rejected a "well prepared" potential recruit because he is a white, heterosexual male has been found guilty of discrimination.

Matthew Furlong, 25, whose father is a detective inspector in Cheshire Police, applied to join the force in 2017.

When he lost out to other candidates, his father lodged a complaint.

An employment tribunal ruled the force had used "positive action" to recruit people with different characteristics, but in a discriminatory way.

Mr Furlong, who studied particle physics and cosmology at Lancaster University, said he was told at the interview "it was refreshing to meet someone as well prepared as yourself" and that he "could not have done any more".

Employment lawyer Jennifer Ainscough said: "Matthew was denied his dream job simply because he was a white, heterosexual male.

"This is the first reported case of its kind in the UK where positive action has been used in a discriminatory way."

'Fallacy'

The tribunal in Liverpool ruled Mr Furlong had been a victim of direct discrimination on the grounds of his sexual orientation, race and sex.

It ruled that while positive action can be used to boost diversity, it should only be applied to distinguish between candidates who were all equally well qualified for a role.

The force's claim it had seen 127 candidates who were equally suitable for the role of police constable was a "fallacy", the tribunal ruled, and imposing such an artificially low threshold - assigning candidates a pass or fail rather than any kind of score - was not a proportionate response to addressing the force's lack of diversity.

Cheshire Police was among a number of forces criticised in 2015 for having no black officers, but has since taken steps to improve opportunities for those of different ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and disability.

The case has been adjourned until later this year for a remedy hearing to determine the amount of compensation to be awarded.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "We have been notified of the outcome of the tribunal and will review the findings over the coming days."
