Good work, but instead of clearing the rubbish from the track they pile it all to one side? Look at the state of the existing track! Give it a few weeks and the new one will look exactly like that. Railways should be fenced off. In the UK walking on a railway is a tresspassable offence unless at a level crossing. |
The Met will push for the prosecution of more than 1,100 people arrested over last month's Extinction Rebellion protests, a senior officer has said. So far more than 70 activists have been charged in connection with the demonstrations that brought parts of central London to a standstill. Ten days of protests in April saw 1,130 people arrested for various offences. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said the Met wanted to deter other groups employing similar tactics. The group's tactics included asking volunteers to deliberately get arrested to cause maximum disruption at roadblocks on Waterloo Bridge, Oxford Circus and Marble Arch. Other protesters glued themselves to trains and buildings. Mr Taylor said 70 people had so far been charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). "It is our anticipation that we are putting all of those to the CPS for decisions," he said. Mr Taylor insisted the Met was equipped to deal with any upcoming actions and said officers from other forces would be called into action if needed. He said the force was in discussions with the Home Office to review the current Public Order legislation with fears Extinction Rebellion's tactics could be adopted by other groups. Mr Taylor added: "I'm not saying going to jail, but we would like to see consequences for any activity at these events that is unlawful. "Protest is not illegal. There is nothing unlawful about protest." In 2011, courts in London and Manchester had to open over the weekend to deal with more than 1,000 people charged with riot-related offences. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-48402495

The captain of the Royal Navy's largest and most powerful ship ever has been sacked from his role for driving an official car on weekends, according to reports. Nick Cooke-Priest had been captain of HMS Queen Elizabeth since October last year - a vessel described by the navy as an "awe-inspiring warship" capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft. It is believed that major Royal Navy warships and their captains are loaned a car for use on official duties. However, according to The Sun, an official investigation found he had used the Ford Galaxy as if it was his own and found him guilty of an "error of judgement". Commodore Cooke-Priest was never warned that using the car for personal journeys was in breach of rules and paid for the petrol himself, according to reports. A former Royal Navy Captain told Sky News: "This was an honest mistake that should have been dealt with swiftly at flotilla level. "It wasn't and has now escalated far too far. The navy hasn't got enough people as it is - they certainly shouldn't be dismissing their very best." A Royal Navy spokesman said: "We can confirm Captain Nick Cooke-Priest has been reassigned to a new role. "We can only say that management action is ongoing and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further." Commodore Cooke-Priest joined the Royal Navy in 1990 and initially specialised as a Lynx helicopter pilot. In 2009 he was promoted to Commander, escorting the Queen during a royal tour on HMS Kent before later taking charge of HMS Iron Duke, and HMS Bulwark, the Fleet Flag Ship. In 2016 he was awarded an OBE. https://news.sky.com/story/hms-queen-elizabeth-captain-sacked-for-using-official-car-at-weekends-11722043

For anyone interested, his surname is actually ironic so his drinking habits are in line with his forefathers ![]() ''This interesting surname, of Anglo-Saxon origin, is a nickname from the Olde English pre 7th Century "drincan" meaning "drink" plus "woetre", "water". In the Middle Ages, weak ale was the universal beverage among the poorer classes, and so cheap as to be drunk like water, whereas water itself was only doubtfully potable. The surname may have been given in irony to an innkeeper or a noted tippler. The surname dates back to the late 13th Century (see below). Further recordings include one John Drinkewater (1274), the Hundred Rolls of Shropshire." https://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Drinkwater#ixzz5kgHJ1Q5g |

Four foreign hostages have been freed by French forces in the West African country of Burkina Faso, the French government says. Two of those released are French. The other two are said to be an American woman and a South Korean woman. Two French soldiers were killed during the raid, the French presidency said. Four kidnappers were also killed, AFP quoted the French military as saying. The French hostages had been kidnapped in neighbouring Benin on 1 May. Their release was secured through a military operation conducted on Thursday night in the north of Burkina Faso, the Elysée palace said. Frenchmen Patrick Picque and Laurent Lassimouillas, both music teachers, disappeared in the remote Pendjari National Park in Benin where they had been on safari. Their local guide was found dead. The two soldiers who were killed during the rescue were named as Cédric de Pierrepont and Alain Bertoncello, described by officials as belonging to a special operations unit. The French military posted photos of the soldiers on social media. French officials also thanked the militaries of the US, Benin and Burkina Faso for their help in the operation. The park is on the border with Burkina Faso where Islamist militants have been increasingly active in recent months. No further details of the other two hostages liberated were given. President Emmanuel Macron congratulated "the French armed forces for the liberation of the hostages, and includes everyone who worked alongside them", the government statement said. "He bows with emotion and solemnity before the sacrifice of our two soldiers who gave their lives to save those of our citizens," it added. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-48228353

A Dutch professional football club has sacked a striker who rang in sick so he could go to London to watch Ajax's Champions League clash with Tottenham Hotspur. Telstar FC - a Dutch second division team based in IJmuiden – terminated Jordie van der Laan's contract after spotting television images of the 25-year-old among the crowd at Spurs' stadium last week. Van der Laan was meant to be preparing for Telstar's game against Jong PSV. He told the IJmuiden Courant newspaper: "I called in sick because I was convinced that I would not be freed from the training." Van der Laan, whose contract was due to expire in June, had played just seven games for Telstar this season after signing from fourth tier club JVC Cuijk. He said in deciding to go to London he "took into account that with Telstar we were no longer playing for anything and I, given the number of playing minutes I have had in the recent period, had only a small chance of figuring against Jong PSV." Van der Laan said he had stated "before the Champions League match that I was not sick and was in London". "So it wasn't that people from the club were surprised to see me on TV. At that moment they were already informed. "It is still odd that I was seen on the pictures three times with my big head!' Van der Laan told the Courant that he had had a discussion with Telstar technical director Piet Buter and they had decided to "separate on good terms". He is now looking for a new club, but tweeted that he was "free after all" to attend Ajax's second leg home game against Spurs in Amsterdam on Wednesday. https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-game/112544242/champions-league-dutch-striker-jordie-van-der-laan-sacked-for-pulling-a-sickie-to-attend-ajaxs-game-with-spurs

A bit earlier, but for the biggest ever invasion attempt of England (since 1066) you need to go back to 1588 and the Spanish Armada. A massive Spanish fleet attempted to invade England but were caught out at sea by storms and a smaller English navy with superior guns. The Spanish lost about 20,000 in the attempt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Armada |

alexistaiwo:I took the liberty of comparing Nigeria and Portugal since there seems to be demand. Took some stats from original poster: Portuguese tax rate : 56.5% Nigerian tax rate: 0-24% (and many people don't pay). Portuguese GDP : 217.6 billion USD Nigerian GDP : 375.8 billion USD Portuguese budget for health : €17.3 billion (source: http://www.theportugalnews.com/news/health-expenditure-up-in-2017/46044) Nigerian budget for health :778,533 euros. (kept this untouched...Seems low) However: Portugal spends 9.5% of its total GDP on healthcare. In Nigeria, that number is 3.7% of GDP. Portuguese population : 10.3 million Nigerian population: 200 million.

It follows news of the death of tragic Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala's father on Friday morning A close friend of Argentine striker Emiliano Sala has been killed in a car crash, according to local media. Marca Argentina and several other outlets report Sebastian Rabellino, a footballer at Sala's first club San Martin de Progreso, was killed last week in a car accident. Reports claim the 24-year old was behind the wheel of his car when it crashed into a truck in Santa Fe province. Four other people were believed to have been in the vehicle, all of whom escaped with minor injuries. Rabellino was a team mate and close friend of Sala, who was killed in January when the plane he was travelling in crashed into the English Channel. Pilot David Ibbotson remains unaccounted for. Sala's death sparked tributes from across the footballing world, including from friend Rabellino, who posted a picture of the pair from 2014 on his Twitter page, shortly after the news was confirmed. Rabellino was also pictured at Sala's wake in his home town, laying down a San Martin shirt with 'Emi' on the back. Both players came through the ranks of the Argentinian club, who paid their own tribute to 'Emi' by releasing a special commemorative shirt. In light of this latest tragedy, the club once again took to social media to pay tribute to both players. In a touching Instagram post, the club wrote: "Seba, set Emi up to score because together you will score the most beautiful goal." Julio Muller, a local politician, told Argentinian media that paramedics had tried to save his life but were unsuccessful. "2019 doesn't let up in shocking us with news in this town," Muller said. "At 5 o'clock in the morning, the lady, his wife, rang me and she was very upset. The father of late footballer Emiliano Sala has died of a heart attack four months after his son was killed in a plane crash. Horacio Sala passed away from a heart attack in his bed at his home in the town of Progreso, Argentina this morning, local media reported. His 28-year-old son Emiliano was flying to Cardiff in January following his transfer from French side Nantes when the Piper Malibu plane piloted by David Ibbotson crashed into the English Channel, killing them both. His father Horacio has been grief-struck ever since, telling of his pain in an interview at his home days after the crash. The former truck driver told Argentine TV: 'I cannot believe it. This is a dream. A bad dream. I am desperate.' He described his son as 'small town humble boy', adding: 'He was a lad who always fought for what he had.' Mr Sala's death was today confirmed by local politician Julio Muller, who said paramedics had rushed to his home but were unable to save him. Mr Muller told local radio station La Red: '2019 doesn't let up in shocking us with news in this town. 'At 5 o'clock in the morning, the lady, his wife, rang me and she was very upset. 'The doctors were there but when I arrived at their home, he had already died.' https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6963189/Emiliano-Salas-father-Horacio-dies-heart-attack.html 3rd pic: The Sala Family.

A British lawyer has revealed how his wife and two children were blown up at a breakfast table in Sri Lanka and said they had 'mercifully' died instantly. Ben Nicholson, 43, was seen wandering the streets of Colombo in a blood-soaked T-shirt in a desperate search for news amid the Easter Sunday massacre which killed at least 290 people. His wife Anita, 42, son Alex, 14, and daughter Annabel, 11, were killed in the restaurant bombing at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo when two suicide bombers walked in and blew themselves up at breakfast. Tonight the high-flying British lawyer paid tribute to his 'amazing, intelligent and talented' family and said they 'brought joy to the lives of everyone'. Mr Nicholson said they had 'mercifully died instantly and with no pain or suffering', in the Table One cafe on the second floor of the hotel, where they were staying on a family holiday. A devastated Mr Nicholson said in a statement tonight: 'I am deeply distressed at the loss of my wife and children. Anita was a wonderful, perfect wife and a brilliant, loving and inspirational mother to our two wonderful children. 'The holiday we had just enjoyed was a testament to Anita's enjoyment of travel and providing a rich and colourful life for our family, and especially our children. 'Alex and Annabel were the most amazing, intelligent, talented and thoughtful children and Anita and I were immensely proud of them both and looking forward to seeing them develop into adulthood. 'They shared with their mother the priceless ability to light up any room they entered and bring joy to the lives of all they came into contact with. 'I would like to give my sincere thanks for the medical teams at General Hospital, Colombo, for treating Anita, Alex and Annabel with great dignity and me with kindness and sympathy. 'I would also like to thank the teams at the British High Commission and Adhvan Tours who have looked after me since Sunday morning and the Sri Lankan people I have encountered in Colombo following this catastrophe. 'Anita, Alex and Annabel leave behind a large extended family and many close and cherished friends who are now grieving this tragic loss. 'We shall all miss them dearly. We are all grateful for the many expressions of support and good wishes. We would ask that the media now respect our privacy and allow us to grieve together.' Earlier, a medic at the hospital had described how she saw Mr Nicholson searching desperately for his relatives. Pushpa Zoysa, in charge of the emergency triage at the National Hospital in Colombo, said: 'I saw him covered in blood like this, walking up and down just there. He spoke to me twice, asking about his family. He had blood all over him but he was not injured, apart from a small cut to his ear. 'He was not running or crying, he was shocked. We wondered whether he was confused but he seemed in control. He just kept asking about his family members. 'He was walking around completely alone and I feel sorry for him but there were so many dead and dying people here, I didn't have time to speak to him more. Eventually he left.' Ms Zoysa went on to describe the scenes of carnage that the hospital dealt with in the aftermath of the multiple atrocities. She said: 'It felt like a bomb had gone off right here. Vehicles were arriving full of body parts and with badly injured people. 'We sent 22 bodies to the police mortuary and kept 11 here. Eight of those were dead when they arrived and the other three died in the emergency room. 'They has no chance. They had multiple injuries and they looked dead. We tried to resuscitate them but there was no hope.' The foreign patients at the hospital discharged themselves against medical advice, she said. 'All day we have had people coming here I ask about missing people,' she added. 'I'm not surprised because there were vehicles coming in full of body parts.' https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6947101/British-dads-daughter-confirmed-dead-wife-son-searched-morgues-them.html

Ecuador's president slams 'discourteous and aggressive behaviour' of Julian Assange Lenin Moreno, President of Ecuador, said in a statement on Julian Assange that he had displayed 'discourteous and aggressive behaviour'. Here is the full transcript of his televised address: 'Ecuador is a generous country and a nation with open arms. Ours is a government respectful of the principles of international law, and of the institution of the right of asylum. 'Granting or withdrawing asylum is a sovereign right of the Ecuadorian state, according to international law. 'Today, I announce that the discourteous and aggressive behaviour of Mr Julian Assange, the hostile and threatening declaration of its allied organisation, against Ecuador, and especially the transgression of international treaties, have led the situation to a point where the asylum of Mr Assange is unsustainable and no longer viable. 'Ecuador sovereignly has decided to terminate the diplomatic asylum granted to Mr Assange in 2012. For six years and 10 months, the Ecuadorian people have protected the human rights of Mr Assange and have provided for his everyday needs at the facilities of our Embassy in London. 'When I became the President of Ecuador, I inherited this situation and decided to adopt a protocol to set the daily life rules at the Embassy, which is less than anyone may expect from a guest hosted at his own house. 'Ecuador has fulfilled its obligations in the framework of international law. On the other hand, Mr Assange violated, repeatedly, clear cut provisions of the conventions on diplomatic asylum of Havana and Caracas; despite the fact that he was requested on several occasions to respect and abide by these rules. 'He particularly violated the norm of not intervening in the internal affairs of other states. The most recent incident occurred in January 2019, when WikiLeaks leaked Vatican documents. Key members of that organisation visited Mr Assange before and after such illegal acts. 'This and other publications have confirmed the world's suspicion that Mr Assange is still linked to WikiLeaks and therefore involved in interfering in internal affairs of other states. 'The patience of Ecuador has reached its limit on the behaviour of Mr Assange. He installed electronic and distortion equipment not allowed. He blocked the security cameras of the Ecuadorian Mission in London. 'He has confronted and mistreated guards. He had accessed the security files of our Embassy without permission. He claimed to be isolated and rejected the internet connection offered by the Embassy, and yet he had a mobile phone with which he communicated with the outside world. 'While Ecuador upheld the generous conditions of his asylum, Mr Assange legally challenged in three different instances the legality of the protocol. In all cases, the relevant judicial authorities have validated Ecuador's position. 'In line with our strong commitment to human rights and international law, I requested Great Britain to guarantee that Mr Assange would not be extradited to a country where he could face torture or the death penalty. 'The British Government has confirmed it in writing, in accordance with its own rules. Finally, two days ago, WikiLeaks, Mr Assange's allied organisation, threatened the government of Ecuador. 'My government has nothing to fear and does not act under threats. Ecuador is guided by the principles of law, complies with international law and protects the interests of Ecuadorians.' https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6911187/Wikileaks-founder-Julian-Assange-arrested-police.html
