Travel / Missing UK Walker Turns Up At His Own Rescue Press Conference (photos) by AbujaBlue: 6:49pm On Sep 08, 2020
An 80-year-old hiker who went missing for three days in the Yorkshire Dales has spoken at a press conference arranged in a bid to track him down.
Harry Harvey spent three nights wild camping after becoming separated from a walking group between Gunnerside and Tan Hill, North Yorkshire, on Saturday.

A major search took place including police, the RAF and rescue dogs.
He was spotted by a wildlife photographer on Tuesday morning, who saw him waving at her near Keld.
Mr Harvey was about six miles (10km) from where he was last seen.
He was then taken by Land Rover to the nearby Tan Hill Inn, where he was reunited with family and friends at the press conference.
Speaking to journalists Mr Harvey, from Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear, said: "I just got separated by getting caught in a really heavy hailstorm, a howling gale of wind.

"By the time I got my kit on it was getting really dark, so I missed what I would say was a turning. I had a plan B straight away, find somewhere safe to camp, put my tent up, keep warm, and that was it.
"The biggest problem I had was getting to Tynemouth from Keld, because I only had £21.05 in my pocket."

Mr Harvey said he had "three good nights wild camping".
"The place where we got separated was absolutely desolate, there was no chance of putting a tent up that's for sure, so I had to find somewhere safe, which is what I did."
Mr Harvey said he was never worried as he had "all the kit and all the training", adding he would rather not have the attention which he said was "not my scene at all".
The experienced hiker, who was reported missing on Sunday afternoon, said he could see search teams but did not realise they were looking for him.

His family said the past three days had been "torture" and they could not put the worry they had into words.
"We know he is experienced, but not three nights, that's taking it a little bit to the extreme," they said.
Insp Mark Gee, from North Yorkshire Police, said: "This is fantastic news. I want to thank all the search volunteers for their time, as well as gamekeepers, estate owners, farmers and local residents for their help and understanding.
"Thanks also to the Tan Hill, who looked after the volunteers and Mr Harvey's family."
Annette Pyrah, the photographer who found him, said she cried when she realised it was Mr Harvey.
"I was out taking photographs of grouse and instead of grouse I found Harry," she said.
"I had passed Tan Hill with a very heavy heart because I knew he hadn't been found and I thought after three days he's not going to be found. It was quite upsetting to see the police and sniffer dogs.
"I just looked up at the fell and this gentleman waved at me. I got out of my car and I said, 'Are you Harry? Have you been missing for three days?' And he said yes. And I started crying."

Ms Pyrah said he had a nasty bump on the head where he had fallen into a stream, but apart from that he was fit and well.
"I got him some help for his head and he rang his wife, which was the main thing," she said.

Excellent summary of the problems afflicting Nigeria's fire service. Instead of fawning over how brilliant fire services are abroad, it focuses on the problems that need addressing here and now.

It should be noted that these problems are seen across Africa. I remember the news of fire trucks being attacked in Nairobi slums.

Norway is incredibly beautiful.

But I notice it hasn't been mentioned just how incredibly expensive it is too. Take Oslo - A glass of beer is 4000-4500 Naira. A pizza is at least 9000 Naira.

Norwegians pay very high taxes, but also earn a lot more money than most, so the locals can afford it. For visitors it can be very expensive.

Foreign Affairs / Portuguese President, 71, Rescues Two Women Caught At Sea (Photos) by AbujaBlue: 9:11pm On Aug 17, 2020
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has helped rescue two women who came into difficulty at an Algarve beach when their kayak capsized.

The president, 71, was pictured on Saturday swimming over to the kayakers who were struggling in the water.

He later told reporters that the women had been swept by currents from a neighbouring beach into the bay.

President Rebelo de Sousa is currently on holiday in the Algarve in a bid to promote tourism there.

Portugal's economy relies heavily on its tourism industry, which has been hugely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The president had just spoken to journalists at Praia do Alvor beach when he noticed the women struggling.

Video footage caught the moment he swam into the sea to assist them. Another man was already there, trying to help turn the canoe over while a person on a jet ski also approached to offer help.

The man on the jet ski then managed to tow the kayak back to the shore.

After assisting the women, President Rebelo de Sousa told journalists that the women had come from another beach.

"As there is a very large west current, they were dragged out, turned around, swallowed a lot of water and were not even able to turn [the kayak], nor to climb [on it], or swim, such is the strength of the current," he told local media.

The president said he was helped by another "patriot" on the jet ski.

He warned that the women should be careful in future.

According to broadcaster 20 Minutos, the president is spending his holidays visiting different areas of the country to promote tourism.

It's long been recognised that landslips are one of the greatest risks to Britain's railways and that a changing climate will make them more likely.

Heatwaves and droughts can dry out the steep embankments beside the tracks, and over the years will start to weaken them.

Add to that the effects of heavy rain, of the kind seen just now in Scotland, saturating and eroding the soil, and undermining its strength.

And with rising global temperatures set to bring extremes of weather never anticipated by the Victorian engineers who built the lines, Network Rail has been studying how best to keep the tracks safe.

But it admits that "we know we can't rebuild every mile of railway".

The most recent multiple fatalities on the UK's railways were in South Wales in 2019, when two railway workers died after being struck by a Great Western train near Port Talbot. They were working without a lookout.

In November 2004, an intercity train travelling on the Reading and Taunton line hit a car on a level crossing, derailing a train and killing seven people and injuring more than 70 others.

In May 2002, an east coast main line train derailed because of an undetected points failure. Coaches rolled and came to rest on platforms. Seven people were killed and 76 injured.

In February 2001, 10 people were killed in the Great Heck Rail Crash near Selby when a train struck a Land Rover that had rolled onto the track because the driver had fallen asleep, and was derailed into the path of another train.

In October 1999, at Ladbroke Grove in London, 31 people were killed in a head-on collision after a driver passed a signal.

Early indications are that the heavy rain could have been the main factor in causing today's crash in Aberdeenshire.

One rail industry source says the 06:38 service from Aberdeen to Glasgow was initially halted because of flooding on the line.

The driver apparently contacted control to ask permission to switch tracks.

It's believed the train reversed and switched to clearer tracks and then continued on its route to Glasgow.

Then it is thought the train hit a landslide and derailed.

However, this initial, unconfirmed version of events should now be closely examined by the UK's Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

Its job is to establish all the facts.

The train's computer systems should show key indicators like the speed it was travelling at when it left the track.

In recent years incidents like this on the UK's railways have become incredibly rare. The last major derailment was in 2007 in Cumbria.

The Queen issued a message of condolence following the crash, saying "it was with great sadness that I heard of the train derailment".

Her Majesty said the entire Royal Family "join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of those who have died and those who have been injured".

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon expressed her "deepest condolences" to the loved ones of those who lost their lives in the "tragic incident".

"My thoughts remain with everyone affected," she said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the BBC the crash was especially shocking because "these accidents on the railways are thankfully so rare".

"Our thoughts are very much with those who have lost their lives and their families and, of course, those that have been injured in the derailment," he added.

"Clearly the most important thing now is that the British Transport Police, who are in charge of the investigation, find out exactly what happened and we all work together to make sure nothing like this ever happens again."

The train which derailed was made up of two locomotives - at the front and back - and four carriages.

British Transport Police said its officers had been called to the scene at about 09:43.

A few minutes later, Network Rail tweeted that there had been reports of a landslip at Carmont and that services between Dundee and Aberdeen had been halted.

The chief executive of Network Rail, Andrew Haines, is cutting short his family holiday in Italy to fly back to the UK.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said he would visit the site on Thursday "to try to understand the situation first hand and offer every possible assistance".

NHS Grampian confirmed it was on a "major incident footing", and ScotRail said it was assisting the emergency services.

The RMT union's Mick Lynch said: "The facts behind this ‎incident will need to be established in due course, but at this stage we are focussed on support and assistance and our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragedy."

Kevin Lindsay, Scotland organiser for the Aslef train drivers union, said: "Our thoughts tonight are with all those who died, and who were injured, in the tragic accident.

"While it is too early to speculate about the causes of the crash, it would seem that the appalling weather conditions in the area - the torrential rain - resulted in a landslip which, in turn, caused the train to derail."

He added that the train had caught fire after rolling down a steep embankment.

Aberdeenshire Provost and Mearns councillor Bill Howatson said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. This is a harrowing time for all concerned."

Three people, including the driver and a conductor, have died after a passenger train derailed in Aberdeenshire.

A major incident was declared and about 30 emergency service vehicles were called to the scene.

It is thought the train hit a landslide after heavy rain and thunderstorms which caused flooding and travel disruption across Scotland.

It involved the 06:38 ScotRail service from Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street.

Six people have been taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious.

British Transport Police said the families of the driver and the conductor had been informed and were being supported by specially-trained liaison officers.

Ch Supt Eddie Wylie said it was believed that all passengers had been accounted for.

He added: "Once the area has been made safe then a full and thorough search will be conducted, which is likely to take some time.

"I know many people will understandably have questions and we will be working closely alongside the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and the Office of Rail and Road to establish the full circumstances of how the train came to derail."

The RMT union said that confirmation of the three deaths, including one of its conductor members, was "the most dreadful news".

Senior assistant general secretary Mick Lynch added the union's thoughts "were with the families, colleagues and friends of those who have lost their lives in this tragedy."

Nairaland / General / Dog In England Gets Stuck on Mountain, 16 Needed To Rescue Her (photos) by AbujaBlue: 10:33pm On Jul 26, 2020
A St Bernard has been rescued after collapsing while walking down England's highest mountain.

Members of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) went to four-year-old Daisy's aid on Scafell Pike.

A team spokesman said Daisy had been showing signs of pain in her legs and was refusing to move.

St Bernards are traditionally on the other side of such mercy missions - they were originally bred to rescue people in the Italian and Swiss Alps.

Friday's operation, which involved 16 members of the MRT, took five hours as rescuers carried Daisy on a stretcher over obstacles including a waterfall.

The spokesman said: "The team rescues canine casualties around a dozen times every year but this was the first time a St Bernard breed has been rescued by the team.

"Daisy was a four-year-old female but still a massive dog.

"Daisy was in fact a rescue dog and extremely placid and compliant, which was a bonus for the stretcher-carry off the mountain.

"It was important to get Daisy off the mountain quickly as the weather was due to deteriorate later that evening."

No details have been released about Daisy's owner.

The British took the Irish as slaves (few decades ago). It was so much that some started writing in their bars "no dogs, no blacks, no Irish"

Much respect to this thread, but 'slaves' is totally the wrong word. The Irish were suppressed and bad deeds were done on both sides, but the Irish were never slaves. The last slaves taken in UK and Ireland were over 200 years ago by Arab pirates.

CRISTIANO RONALDO has posted a loving first picture of his family back inside their Turin home as he quarantines before Juventus resume training.

Captioning his snap "The Greatest Love," he grinned as he played with his four children on a sprawling sofa - in the week partner Georgina Rodriguez hinted another baby could be on the way.

And his three other kids messed about beside them - twins Eva and Mateo, who will be three next month, plus his daughter with Georgina, Alana Martina, also aged two.

Behind the happy scene, though, is a portrait of Ronaldo's father Jose, who died 15 years ago with an alcoholism-related liver condition, aged just 52.

We must learn to treat animals rightly actually. I think Nairaland has a bias against animals. They like to show dead animals. Many here have not seen or observed this animal before and will never get a chance to. I eat cows and chicken; but we rear them. We shouldn't go out of our ways to be hostile to animals and sadly this platform promotes that culture. People go in search of animals to maim and murder so they can be on nairaland front-page. Disgraceful actually.

Very true. There is a culture on this board that stems from delight in killing snakes and extends to pretty much any animal that can be classed as bushmeat to turn it into a humble brag like this post. The most disgusting one for me is when people start celebrating the torture and slow death of manatees.

The primary user for these masks is to stop the wearer from spreading any potential virus - this is why surgeons wear them when performing surgery.

They are not that effective at stopping covid 19 as they are not airtight (there are more effective masks out there), but it is something, so long as they are not over work.

Early indications suggest the rules are already being breached and families are making unauthorised trips to beaches further away from their homes. Police do have the power to enforce fines if necessary.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that from May 2nd, adults will also be able to go out for walks and to practise individual sport 'as long as the favourable evolution of the pandemic' allowed it.

The de-escalation plan will be presented on Tuesday once approved by the Council of Ministers.

Spain's State of Emergency has just been extended from April 26th to midnight on May 10th but Mr. Sanchez has set May 2nd as the beginning of the end of the lockdown.

He stressed the de-escalation will be gradual in all aspects of life, all activities will be recovered in stages and with changes depending on the steps that are taken.

It will, said the Prime Minister, be asymmetric: 'It will depend on the territory in which one lives, since the incidence has been disparate. It has to be coordinated, with the same rules for everyone. We enter together and we will leave together as a country, as a team, even if at different speeds.'

And he added: 'It is important that the scorecard is coordinated by the Government of Spain to strengthen the capacities of the national health system in order to strengthen health surveillance and the detection of new outbreaks.'

The Prime Minister said that 'this second stage of transition is as fraught with risks and dangers as the first. We do not have an infallible manual.'

Millions of children in Spain under the age of 14 are enjoying their first taste of freedom in 42 days as the country relaxes their confinement rules and adults are likely to follow from May 2nd.

Police are today trying to control the new rules which allow youngsters to go out and play for one hour provided they are accompanied by a parent or allocated guardian.

There is already confusion as some locations in Spain are said to have 'opened their beaches' but technically, only children who live less than one kilometre away can visit and they must not sunbathe or swim or have a picnic.

The authorities say police won't be taking a heavy-handed approach but will be 'timing' some people who will be warned to go home if they exceed the one hour limit.

The new rules for children allow them to ride a bicycle or scooters or carry a ball but they can't play with other children outside their family group and can't go to playgrounds.

They can only go out from 9am to 9pm, for one hour, with a parent or guardian, with no more than three children in total. They can only venture one kilometre from their house and are being advised to wear masks, though this is not compulsory.
