Education / Leeds Uni Offers Students £10k & Free Accommodation To Defer by AbujaBlue: 10:21am On Aug 12, 2021
Students wanting to study law or business at the University of Leeds are being offered £10,000 cash and free accommodation to defer their courses.

Deputy Vice Chancellor Peter Jimack said the university was making the offer as some courses were full.

He said the nature of teacher-assessed grades as opposed to exam-based grades had made it "harder to predict" the number of successful applicants.

The University of Exeter has made a similar offer to medical students.

Prof Jimack told the BBC: "We've contacted students on a small number of programmes in two schools to let them know that we are going to make them an offer to defer to next year with an incentive of a cash payment of about £10,000 and our fee for their halls of residence in their first year being paid by the university.

"We are not putting pressure on anybody to make that choice, it's an entirely free choice."

He said any students who chose to defer until 2022 would be provided with online materials to help them prepare for their arrival next year.

He added that the university was also creating an extra 30 places to study medicine for students who were unable to get a place at universities which were oversubscribed.

A record number of students have applied to study medicine this autumn, a rise of more than 20% on last year.

The number of places for medicine in England is capped by the government.

Prof Jimack said: "We recognise that there is a national need and we know from the last 18 months how important our doctors and nurses are.

"So we're stepping-up and making available some additional places that we will make available to students from oversubscribed universities to come and study with us at Leeds."

No way the assassins would have been caught so quickly unless they were given up.

The way the new dictator has come to power is very suspicious. Vioment in the thread above me is very astute suspecting the Dominican Republic - a toss up between them and other political actors in Haiti.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Mount Self-isolates After Hug With Covid-positive Chelsea Teammate (photos) by AbujaBlue: 8:15pm On Jun 22, 2021
Gareth Southgate’s plans for England’s final Euro 2020 group phase tie against the Czech Republic at Wembley on Tuesday night were thrown into turmoil after two of his expected starters – Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount – were forced to self-isolate.

The Football Association took the measure as a precaution after the pair were deemed to have been in close contact with the Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour, who returned a positive Covid test on Monday morning. The contact is believed to have taken place in the Wembley tunnel after last Friday’s 0-0 draw. All three play their club football at Chelsea.

Billy Gilmour’s cruel twist of fate casts shadow over Scotland’s hopes

“It would be something to do with chatting after the game but I have no idea of all the detail,” Southgate said. Mount was a certain starter for the Czech game and it is understood Southgate had been ready to bring in Chilwell for Luke Shaw at left-back.

England must beat the Czechs to advance as group winners but they will qualify even if they lose after Monday’s results went in their favour in terms of the third-placed finishers in other groups.

It was unclear on Monday night whether Chilwell and Mount would be cleared to play, having returned negative PCR tests on Sunday – along with the rest of the England squad – and negative lateral flow tests on Monday. The FA was in discussions with Public Health England about, as Southgate put it, “what would classify as being contact”, but the manager admitted that a change to his lineup was “looking a high possibility”.

If Chilwell cannot play, Shaw would be expected to start while Mount’s absence could open the door in midfield for Jude Bellingham, who briefly became the youngest player to feature at a European Championship when the 17-year-old came off the bench in England’s opening game against Croatia, which ended in a 1-0 win. Southgate is also to set to recall Kyle Walker at right-back and the fit-again Harry Maguire in central defence.

“We haven’t confirmed the team yet and we will wait until the morning when we are really clear on the final situation with the two boys [Chilwell and Mount] and where we stand,” Southgate said.

Gilmour has begun a 10-day period of isolation – a huge blow for Scotland for their must-win final group game against Croatia at Hampden Park on Tuesday night. On what had been only his third Scotland appearance, the 20-year-old gave a man-of-the-match performance against England as his country got a result to give them hope of a first ever qualification to the knockout rounds of a major tournament.

“Billy would have started the game and now he won’t,” the manager, Steve Clarke, said. “So it’s a chance for someone else to come into the team and make themselves a national hero. Billy’s upset, as you would expect. He’s asymptomatic. Today’s training was a little bit disrupted but the bulk of the work has been done over the pre-camp.”

The news of Gilmour’s positive test broke at 10.30am and it reached Southgate as he wrapped up his morning training session, in which all of his players had been involved. According to Southgate, the FA oversaw a “belt and braces” round of lateral flow tests for the squad – all of which were negative – and it was decided to remove Chilwell and Mount. “If there is any risk with these two players, then we’ve got to make sure we don’t put any other players at risk,” Southgate said.

It was unclear who flagged Chilwell and Mount as having been in close contact with Gilmour, with Southgate unable to say whether it was an independent observer at the game. Public Health England has made it clear that it was the FA’s decision to move Chilwell and Mount away from the squad.
“I can’t say it isn’t disruptive,” Southgate said. “We don’t really know at this point whether they might be OK for tomorrow or they could be out for 10 days so there are a lot of unknowns, frankly, at this moment in time.

“My biggest hope is for the two boys – that they’re not going to miss 10 days of a European Championship. That would be a massive blow for us, but for them as well.

“I’m not angry or pissed off, really, and certainly not with the players. Not with anybody. It’s just the fact of the world we’re living in at the moment.”

One of the strange things is that nobody in the Scotland squad has been deemed as a close contact of Gilmour and told to isolate. “I don’t want to cause a drama for Scotland but if you’re all in the dressing room together where does everything stand?” Southgate said.

“I really don’t know how all that works. All I know is that we are in the situation we’re in and we’re complying with Public Health England and there’s nothing else we can do. I don’t want to make life difficult for Steve [Clarke]. I want him to do well, he’s a great guy.”

Foreign Affairs / Re: Huge Security Operation Underway As Biden Lands In UK For G7 Summit (photos) by AbujaBlue: 9:45pm On Jun 10, 2021
Meanwhile for the summit, some 30 vehicles have been leased from a Somerset company called Empire RV, which usually supplies luxury vehicles for film shoots and Grand Prix events.

The US camper vans are so large that the company warns many can only be driven by one of their experienced staff and are not available for self-drive hire. The most luxurious ones - some the size of an articulated lorry - can sleep up to eight people and come equipped with satellite TV and other comforts.

The RV sare expected to be driven to the Tregenna Hotel in Carbis Bay where the president is due to stay during the three-day conference. The castle boasts 98 bedrooms and is the grandest hotel in the county, featuring a 72-acre estate and an 18-hole golf course.

The US motor homes have been rented for £2,500 each for a week by the US Embassy in London and include the 45ft long former RV used by Jensen Button when he was racing in Formula 1.

A spokesman for Bristol based Empire RV said they had set up a mini village at the St Mawgan airbase.

A helicopter, which is dubbed Marine One when the US president is onboard, practised landing on the golf course at the Tregenna Castle Resort - where President Biden and the other leaders will stay - on Monday.

Pilots familiarising the route they will take after Air Force One lands at Newquay Airport later this week have taken to the skies above Cornwall in recent days. Three US Marine Osprey aircraft have been seen over St Michael Mount and the Carbis Bay area.

The aircrafts' purpose is to fly White House staff during the President's trips abroad. They also transport Secret Service agents that follow Marine One in case the helicopter goes down.

Ospreys were seen over Haldon Hills near Exeter at 8pm on Monday, where it is thought they may have just left Exeter Airport. By 8.40pm the aircraft were spotted landing at Tregenna Castle Resort.

The helicopters were seen landing at Carlyon Bay, St Austell, at 9.45pm, before descending onto Tregenna Castle Resort at 10.15pm. The aircraft were brought to the UK on the US Air Force's Boeing C-17 Globemaster III.

They were offloaded at the Royal Navy airbase Culdrose, near Helston, on Sunday. The impressive US-military aircraft flew high over the steep sand dunes of Hayle beach, St Ives, at around 9.30pm on Monday.

Biden will join others from the G7 group of leading economies in Carbis Bay on Friday, where Devon and Cornwall Police are expecting climate protests.

Johnson plans to use the summit to urge the members - also including Canada, Japan, France, Germany and Italy - to 'defeat' Covid-19 by helping to vaccinate the world by the end of next year.

The White House said in April when it confirmed the trip to Europe that Biden will 'highlight his commitment to restoring our alliances, revitalizing the Transatlantic relationship, and working in close cooperation with our allies and multilateral partners to address global challenges and better secure America's interests'.

During an official visit to the UK, Blinken said that the 'special relationship' is 'enduring', 'effective' and 'dynamic' as well as being 'close to the hearts of the American people'.

Speaking at a press conference in Downing Street alongside Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, Blinken said: 'It is also the 75th anniversary of Winston Churchill's famous speech at Westminster College in Missouri where he described the Special Relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States and how vital it is for our two countries and many others around the world.

'Three quarters of a century later, that Special Relationship is enduring, it is effective, it is dynamic and it is close to the hearts of the American people. The United States has no closer ally, no closer partner, than the United Kingdom and I am very glad for the chance to say that again here today.'

The President's security team for the Summit is reportedly so vast they will have to stay in more than 50 hired luxury camper vans because there is not enough accommodation.

The recreational vehicles have been delivered to St Mawgan airbase near Newquay, 20 miles from where the meeting of leaders takes place in the tiny Cornish resort of Carbis Bay at the weekend.

A 400-strong contingent of Secret Service agents and support staff will be at the summit, but with thousands of holidaymakers already in the area, almost every hotel and B&B in a 30-mile radius of the summit has been booked.

Meanwhile, video footage showed two Sea King and three V-22 Osprey helicopters soaring above Cornwall and Devon as they practiced the route the President will take from the airbase to Tregenna Castle Resort, St Ives, after Air Force One lands at RAF Mildenhall and then Newquay airport on Wednesday.

Some 1,000 police will be staying on a cruise liner docked in Falmouth harbour and others will stay in RVs currently parked up at the RAF airbase near Newquay.

It comes after a long line of caravans clogged up the A30 on Monday as holidaymakers made their way to the southern-most point of England. One photograph shared on social media showed heavy traffic that had been 'crawling' for around 20 minutes near the Devon-Cornwall border.

After his remarks, Biden left the stage to shake hands with service members.

Before the president spoke, Jill Biden admonished him to focus when she addressed the troops.

'Joe pay attention,' the first lady told the president.

She had just told the service members to sit down. President Biden, standing behind her, turned around to see the troops positioned behind the stage.

That was when the first lady asked chided him to watch her as she addressed Air Force personnel at Royal Air Force Mildenhall.

In her brief remarks, the first lady thanked the troops for their service and touted her Joining Forces initiative - a group she formed with then-first lady Michelle Obama to support families of American troops.

'I hope that you know how special you are. And we are so grateful for your and your family's service,' she said.

Biden and his wife Jill, a university professor, touched down at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk in Air Force One just after 7.30pm, kicking off the president's eight-day trip to Europe.

The UK stop also includes face-to-face meetings with the Queen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

After speaking to troops, the Bidens head to Carbis Bay near St Ives, where the leaders of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada will gather for three days to discuss the pandemic and climate change among other issues.

Biden is scheduled to meet with Johnson for face-to-face talks Thursday - the first time the two men will have met in person - before the G7 Summit formally gets underway on Friday.

When the summit ends on Sunday, the President and First Lady will meet the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Biden will then depart for Brussels where he will attend a NATO summit and a joint US-EU summit before then heading to Geneva for a bilateral showdown with Putin.

In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Biden said that the trip is about 'realising America's renewed commitment to our allies and partners' as he attempts to build bridges with Britain and the EU after some leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel clashed with his predecessor Donald Trump.

The Republican president engaged in a bitter trade row with the EU and slammed NATO members for failing to spend more on defense - sparking fears that he would pull the US out of the military alliance and embolden Russian activity in Ukraine and eastern Europe.

Trump also formally withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Agreement - both negotiated by Barack Obama. One of Biden's first acts as President was to rejoin the climate accord and reopen nuclear talks with the Iranian government, as he sought to reverse the actions of the previous administration.

The White House has said that Biden will meet with Johnson to 'affirm the special relationship between our nations' - a term which the prime minister reportedly dislikes because it is 'too needy'.

Whitehall is understood to have viewed the President's decision to make the UK his first overseas destination as a major diplomatic victory for Johnson.

The Prime Minister has lavished praised on Biden since he won power in the election last year, in the hope of striking a new free trade deal with the US.

However, there are concerns that he and the President may not get along, after Democratic sources previously questioned whether Johnson was an 'ally'.

Johnson had sought close relations with Trump, causing Biden to call him a 'physical and emotional clone' of the controversial Republican president.

Johnson faced fierce domestic criticism over his relationship with Trump, but has defended the ties and has insisted that prime ministers should always have the 'best possible' ties with sitting US presidents.

There has also been speculation Johnson and Biden could struggle to work together because of the Prime Minister's past criticism of Barack Obama, in whose administration Biden served as vice president.

Biden is also expected to put pressure on the UK not to renege on the Northern Ireland Brexit Protocol in a bid to preserve the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. US concerns about the province's trade status could even derail efforts to strike an Anglo-US trade deal.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told the BBC: 'President Biden believes and has said that the Northern Ireland Protocol, as part of the agreement between the UK and the European Union, is critical to ensuring that the spirit, promise and future of the Good Friday Agreement is protected.

'That being said, of course the UK and EU need to work out the specifics and the modalities on that, need to find some way to proceed that works both for the EU and the UK. But whatever way they find to proceed must, at its core, fundamentally protect the gains of the Good Friday Agreement and not imperil that.

'And that is the message that President Biden will send when he is in Cornwall.'

However, there were positive signs in March of the 'special relationship' warming up after Biden's climate envoy John Kerry visited London for talks with Johnson. The positive trend continued in May when US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington has 'no closer partner' than the UK.

Joe Biden had tough talk for Vladimir Putin when he addressed US troops stationed in the United Kingdom of Wednesday night.

Speaking at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk he said: 'I'm meeting with Mr. Putin to let him know what I want him to know,' drawing cheers from the Air Force personnel.

He also told the crowd of American troops that 'global warming' is the biggest threat to the US, teared up as he paid tribute to his late veteran son Beau and boasted that 'America is back'.

At the start of his speech he told the standing troops to sit by saying 'at ease', then said: 'I keep forgetting I am president'.

It marked the start of his first foreign trip as president; eight days in Europe where he will meet Boris Johnson and his new wife Carrie, the rest of the G7 leaders, The Queen, NATO officials and, finally, Putin on June 16 in Geneva.

When he meets Prime Minister Johnson on Thursday, he is set to set up a new 'Atlantic Charter' modelled on the post-Second World War pact made by FDR and Winston Churchill and will work to open up travel between the US and UK 'as soon as possible'.

The president has trashed talked Putin before, calling him a 'killer with no soul,' and has made it clear he intends to take Putin to task for Moscow's interference in US elections, its treatment of dissidents and the series of ransomware attacks carried out by Russian hackers.

At their arrival on Wednesday night, Joe and Jill Biden received a warm welcome at the base, garnering several rounds of applause. They spoke outdoors as the sun set behind them. Both Bidens wore face masks but took them off to speak.

President Biden also mentioned his late son Beau, a major in the Delaware Army National Guard. He teared up as he thanked military personnel the Royal Air Force Mildenhall for their service.

'I wish my major was here to thank you as well,' he said referencing his late son, who died of brain cancer in 2015. 'You're the best of our country,' he added.

He also outlined the goals of his trip and the message he wanted to give to world: 'The United States is back and the democracies of the world are standing together to face the toughest challenges.'

Biden said during his meetings with fellow leaders, he would focus on COVID, climate change, and on protecting themselves from 'the growing threat of ransomware attacks...[and] the autocrats who are letting it happen.'

After his G7 meeting, Biden will meet in Brussels with NATO and EU leaders, where the Russian and Chinese threats will top the agenda.

Crime / UK Drug Dealers Caught With ₦300m Of Cocaine After Undertaking Police(pics, Vid) by AbujaBlue: 6:44pm On Jun 04, 2021
A drug dealing duo were caught with a rucksack full of cocaine worth £500,000 after they sped past a police car at 100mph in an expensive BMW on a motorway hard shoulder.

Dramatic dash cam footage shows driver Simon Pagett, 39, behind the wheel of a £100,000 BMW i8 and undertaking a patrol car on the M6 near junction 7 near Walsall, West Midlands.

A gobsmacked police officer is heard saying 'Really?' before setting off in pursuit of Pagett and his friend Dean Stone, who had 5kg of high-purity cocaine in their possession - worth an estimated half a million pounds.

After their short-lived escape, in which Pagett dangerously weaved in and out of traffic and went three times the speed limit in a residential area, both he and his accomplice were stopped by police.

The pair were sentenced to more than six years behind bars each at a Birmingham court.

The video, released by West Midlands Police, shows the expensive motor pretend to pull over on the M6, before accelerating away at more than 100mph.

The dramatic dash cam footage also shows Pagett jumping red lights and weaving in and out of traffic on the A34 heading towards Walsall, at one point hitting the central reservation.

He even did a lap of Toby Carvery car park in a desperate bid to escape before veering off road in a residential 30mph area as he attempted to shake off the officer.

It was at this moment that Stone, 40, jumped from the car and ran off clutching a black Nike backpack.

He was arrested trying to get into a nearby taxi, while the rucksack was recovered in nearby bushes.

It was found to contain five 1kg slabs of high-purity cocaine with a value of around £500,000.

Five minutes later Pagett stopped the car and gave himself up to police.

He later claimed he earned £300,000 from dog breeding, cutting trees and running a vehicle recovery business.

Both men, of Walsall, admitted possessing drugs with intent to supply with Pagett also pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

Pagett was jailed for seven years and Stone sentenced to six years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Mandy Dorrington, of West Midlands Police, said: 'Pagett and Stone clearly thought they were above the law and far too important to waste time in a traffic queue - but unfortunately for them they undertook one of our patrol cars.

'Pagett tried to try and shrug off the advanced police driver but after a few minutes realised it was a fruitless task and gave up.

'He was driving a BMW i8 worth more than £100,000.

'In interview he claimed the car and his lifestyle was funded through his dog breeding, cutting trees and vehicle recovery businesses which he suggested netted him £300,000.

'We'll be putting that claim to the test and examining his finances and any cash or assets he can't demonstrate he's accrued legally we'll look to seize under the Proceeds of Crime Act.'

The shifting of these plates is in part responsible for Iceland's intense volcanic activity.

The most recent eruption was at Holuhraun, beginning in August 2014 and ending in February 2015, in the Bardarbunga volcanic system in an uninhabited area in the centre of the island.

That eruption did not cause any major disruptions outside the immediate vicinity.

But in 2010, an eruption at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano sent huge clouds of smoke and ash into the atmosphere, disrupting air traffic for more than a week with the cancellation of more than 100,000 flights worldwide and leaving some 10 million passengers stranded.

Incredible footage shows a dive-bombing drone being incinerated by lava spewing from a volcano in Iceland.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano, which is 25 miles from Reykjavik, began erupting in March after lying dormant for more than 900 years.

Aerial video captures the drone flying over the volcano before crashing into the bubbling lava.

It was filmed and operated by YouTuber Joey Helms, who said: 'Around the volcano where you have the hot gases emitted they cause turbulence all around it and hot rocks raining on to you.

'[It makes] flying these things even more tricky.'

The long-dormant volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-west Iceland flared to life on March 20 after tens of thousands of earthquakes were recorded in the area.

Crowds of hikers have since flocked to the volcano to get a glimpse of the eruption.

Iceland has 32 volcanic systems currently considered active, the highest number in Europe. The country has had an eruption every five years on average.

The vast island near the Arctic Circle straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack on the ocean floor separating the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

Morocco's Foreign Ministry has said Madrid's move to assist Brahim Ghali, head of the Polisario Front, was 'inconsistent with the spirit of partnership and good neighborliness' and vowed there would be 'consequences.'

Vivas, Ceuta's conservative regional president, said residents were in a state of 'anguish, concern and fear' and 60% of the city's children had not shown up for school on Tuesday. He also linked the sudden mass arrival to Spain's compassionate assistance to Ghali.

The Spanish government itself, however, officially rejects the notion that Morocco is punishing Spain for a humanitarian move.

'I cannot envisage that putting the lives of young people and minors at risk is in response to a humanitarian issue,' Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said.

The prime minister appeared on live television to announce he would visit Ceuta and that his top priority was to ensure safety in the city 'in the face of any challenge, any eventuality and under any circumstance.'

Over the decades, Spain has built a close relationship with Morocco to crack down on illegal border crossings but also to increase economic exchanges and fight extremism. Sanchez on Tuesday avoided any direct criticism to Rabat in his speech.

'To be effective,' he said, 'that cooperation must always be based on respect - respect for the shared border.'

Sanchez was also facing a political storm at home, with the far-right Vox party blaming the migration crisis on the government's 'inaction' and sending its leader on a quick visit to Ceuta.

Many African migrants regard Ceuta and nearby Melilla, another Spanish territory, as a gateway into Europe. In 2020, 2,228 chose to cross into the two enclaves by sea or land, often risking injuries or death.

On Tuesday, another 80 African migrants readed Melilla, 350 kilometers (218 miles) east of Ceuta, by jumping over the enclave's double fence.

Morocco scored a diplomatic victory last year when the previous U.S. administration under Donald Trump recognized Rabat's sovereignty over Western Sahara, paving the way for normalizing relations between Israel and Morocco.

Souring of ties over Western Sahara

In April, Spain allowed Sahrawi leader Brahim Ghali, 73, to be treated in hospital for Covid-19, reportedly in Logroño. He leads the Polisario Front, fighting for Western Saharan sovereignty against the claims of Morocco. The Moroccan government responded angrily and warned Spain that harbouring Mr Ghali would bring "consequences".

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González said she was not aware of Morocco using the border issue to exert political pressure. But many see Monday's events, when Moroccan border guards appeared not to stop migrants from crossing, as evidence of a reprisal.

Such difficulties are likely to complicate the two neighbours' normally tight co-operation on the migrant issue. However, Spain says it has already repatriated about half of the migrants, following talks with Morocco.

The vast majority of those who reached Ceuta were Moroccan. Local police have clamped down on sub-Saharan migrants in northern Morocco in recent years, meaning they have sought other routes to Spain, such as across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands.

The EU border force Frontex reports that illegal migration to Spain's Canary Islands - off the Moroccan coast - has surged this year.

In most cases sub-Saharan Africans make perilous journeys in rickety boats and drowning is common.

However, the overall number of undocumented migrants reaching Europe so far this year remains far below the levels seen in 2015-2016.

On Tuesday, Moroccan security forces at Fnideq, the adjacent town to Ceuta, fired tear gas to disperse a large crowd of migrants at the border fence, AFP news agency reported.

Mr Sánchez has cancelled a trip to Paris - he was to attend a French-led summit on financial aid for Africa. Instead, he is focusing on the Ceuta crisis, and he promised "maximum firmness" in restoring normality to the enclave.

He has received support from senior EU officials, with European Council President Charles Michel tweeting: "Spain's borders are the European Union's borders."

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson described the number of arrivals in Ceuta as "unprecedented" and "worrying", noting that "a big number of them [are] children".

At the other enclave, Melilla, 86 sub-Saharan Africans entered on Tuesday via its southern jetty, which marks the border with Morocco.

Melilla has a formidable border fence, and several hundred more migrants were blocked by security forces, Spain's Efe news agency reports.

Spanish officials quoted by Efe said Moroccan guards had helped the Spanish forces in Melilla. Some migrants threw stones at the Spanish forces, they said.

Spanish media said it was different in Ceuta, where Moroccan border guards stood by and watched as migrants took to the sea to try to reach the enclave.

Most of the migrants were said to be young men, but there were also several families. Many had used inflatable rings and rubber dinghies.

They started arriving in Ceuta at 02:00 (midnight GMT) on Monday, but the number soared during the day. At least one died during the crossing.

Last month, more than 100 migrants arrived at Ceuta's Tarajal entry point. Most were sent back, except about 30 minors whose ages were confirmed by medical tests.

Since the 17th Century both Ceuta and Melilla have been under Spanish rule, though they are long claimed by Morocco. The port cities now form the EU's only land border with Africa. They have semi-autonomous status, like some regions of mainland Spain.

The influx comes amid renewed tension over Western Sahara, a territory occupied by Spain until 1975, when Morocco annexed it. Since then it has been disputed between Morocco and the indigenous Sahrawi people, led by the Polisario Front.

Spain has deployed troops after record numbers of migrants entered its enclave of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco.

At least 6,000 people reached Ceuta in a single day, Spanish officials say.

They say the migrants - who include about 1,500 minors - either swam around the border fences that jut out into the sea or walked across at low tide.

Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez has vowed to restore order. Spain says it has already sent some 2,700 migrants back - but not the minors.

Most of the migrants are said to be from Morocco.

The Spanish forces troops have been deployed to the beach to help border police at Ceuta's main entry point - Tarajal, on the enclave's south side.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said 200 troops, plus 200 extra police were going to assist Ceuta's normal 1,100-strong border force. The enclave has some 80,000 inhabitants.

Spain's Ceuta and Melilla enclaves have become magnets for African migrants.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Whale Stranded In London Put Down To 'end Suffering' - Huge Rescue Effort (pics) by AbujaBlue: 10:37pm On May 10, 2021
Julia Cable, national co-ordinator of the BDMLR, said the mammal had not been "acting the way it did last night" and had "basically lost any energy that it had left in it".

She added: "It's also got another stranding injury which along with ones from yesterday all adds up really."

Dan Jarvis, also of BDMLR, said: "It's for a very good reason they've come ashore. Sometimes it is by accident, they do get stranded, but usually sadly it is the case that they're already seriously ill or badly injured.

"And there's not a great deal we can do in that situation."

Liz Sandeman, co-founder of Marine Connection, said the whale's welfare had to be considered as it was not just a case of getting it back to sea if it was a young animal.

"It wouldn't know how to feed. It learns everything from its mother - how to navigate, how to hunt," she said.

Minke whales are the smallest of the great whales, growing to about 33ft (10m), and are usually found throughout the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Their range extends from the ice edge in the Arctic during the summer to near the equator during winter.

A juvenile minke whale that became stranded in the River Thames has been put down.

Hundreds of people gathered along riverbanks in south-west London after the whale was first spotted on Sunday.

It was first freed from Richmond Lock but became stranded a second time in Teddington.

Rescuers earlier said the mammal's condition had deteriorated "rapidly" and a vet team had been working to "end its suffering".

A vet from the Zoological Society of London administered the injection shortly after 18:00.

The whale is now being moved and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.

The minke, which measured between 3m (10ft) and 4m (13ft), was first spotted near Barnes Bridge and became stranded on Richmond Lock's boat rollers at about 19:00 BST on Sunday.

RNLI teams managed to remove it but it escaped as it was being towed and was seen swimming between Richmond and Teddington earlier on Monday before becoming stuck.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue previously said the whale had been having difficulty swimming as its "strength reserves seem to be compromised".

They said a veterinary team had been "on stand by to euthanise the animal to end its suffering".

Crime / Re: Local Hunters Kill 4th Elephant In 2 Years In Ogun State (Photos) by AbujaBlue: 10:18am On May 03, 2021
This is despicable. Countries like Kenya and Tanzania protect their elephants and draw in the tourist dollars, yet this place will never get rid of its 'bushmeat' mindset.

Imagine if an enterprising Nigerian came up with something like the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage in Nairobi (https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/), which draws in 100s of paying visitors each day as well has helping to conserve elephants (letting local school children in for free to educate them).

Yes, Nigeria lacks the tourism industry that lures European and American families, but you've got to start somewhere.

The tennis court is dilapidated.

Travel / Re: My New Lagos - Ibadan Train Trip To Abeokuta (Pictures) by AbujaBlue: 5:02pm On Mar 10, 2021
Thanks OP, but some more information and photos would enhance the post.

What station is that? Lagos or Abeokuta?
What facilities do the stations have?
The land around the station looks unfinished. What is happening there?
How long is the trip to Abeokuta from Lagos?
How much did the journey cost?
Are there more photos of inside and outside the train?
What services do the trains have (food, toilets?), and what state are they in?
Why do the seats have loose green canvas on them? Are they afraid of customers dirtying the main seat?
Thanks!
