Foreign Affairs / Equador President: Assange Discourteous & Aggressive.Hauled Out Of Embassy(Pics) by AbujaBlue: 12:04pm On Apr 11, 2019
Julian Assange has been arrested by British police today after Ecuador withdrew his political asylum seven years after he was given refuge by the country.

The Wikileaks founder was dragged head-first out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in handcuffs by a group of seven burly police officers as stunned supporters and protesters watched on in central London.

He is currently in police custody and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court 'as soon as possible'.

Ecuador's president Lenin Moreno said the decision to withdraw Assange's asylum status came after the 'repeated violations to international conventions and daily-life protocols' and his 'discourteous and aggressive behaviour'.

Moreno added that he had asked Britain to guarantee that Assange would not be extradited to a country where he could face torture or the death penalty.

Moments after the arrest, during which Assange held on to a Gore Vidal book on the history of the national security state, WikiLeaks said Ecuador had acted illegally and 'in violation of international law'.

Assange, 47, has not left Ecuador's diplomatic soil for seven years amid fears he would be arrested and extradited for publishing thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables.

I had to look this one up. For anyone interested about this funny oyibo surname, it was an ironic name, so Danny is keeping up with the traditions of his forefathers grin

'This interesting surname, of Anglo-Saxon origin, is a nickname from the Olde English pre 7th Century "drincan" meaning "drink" plus "woetre", "water". In the Middle Ages, weak ale was the universal beverage among the poorer classes, and so cheap as to be drunk like water, whereas water itself was only doubtfully potable. The surname may have been given in irony to an innkeeper or a noted tippler. The surname dates back to the late 13th Century (see below). Further recordings include one John Drinkewater (1274), the Hundred Rolls of Shropshire.

Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Drynkwater, Drynekewatter, Dinkwater, and Drinkewater. Elizabeth Drinkwater married Thomas Shawe on January 25th 1561, at St. Dunstan in the East, London. Thomas Drinkwater married Johane Cock on January 13th 1588 at St. Gregory by St. Paul, London. One Stephen Drinkwater is recorded as being a landowner in St. John's parish, the Barbados in 1678. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Drinkewater, which was dated 1273, in the "Hundred Rolls of Shopshire", during the reign of King Edward 1, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling'

Italy is already saturated crime-wise. These Nigerians can touch the south of the country else they'll good themselves buried alive courtesy of the mafia. So they try and operate in the north where policing is more rigorous.

What's more, if this were the mafia they would have just bribed the police. These huys just don't have the brains or the networks in place.

Another fool. Tell the BBC to broadcast anything negative about the UK and their fellow white people. How many times have you seen or heard such a broadcast? They are nothing but propaganda evil anti-African machines. Don't be deceived!

You have a serious chip on your shoulder. The majority of BBC output goes towards UK programming/investigative journalism on UK matters. A simple web search and you can find reports on growing drug use in the UK, on education scandals, political scandals etc. Definitely 'negative on the UK and their fellow white people.' as you put it. Why don't we hear about it? Because we don't care!!!

Put your head in the sand for as long as you want, but Africans are killing Africans right in front of our eyes and Burundi is one of the worse offenders.

I am not worried that the OP has voiced his crackpot narrative at the beginning of his post, the foreign affairs section is littered with loony conspiracy theorists such as this and it is natural they will find their way out to the FP now and again. But I am worried that Nairaland mods have chosen to push a legitimate news item to the front page together with the OP's biased and loony narrative intact.

Should Nairalanders not be able to decide themselves based on the facts without being shoehorned one way or the other? That Nairaland (even if only a single mod) should seemingly endorse this is seriously worrying.

It is really no secret what a despicable regime Burundi is and the blood they have on their hands of fellow Africans.

I would recommend that anyone who has doubts watch the BBC report and make their own mind up. They did a similar one on the abuse of protesters by Nigerian security forces and it was met with widespread approval on here.

Immigrant children on hijacked school bus to get Italian citizenship

Foreign children on the school bus hijacked near Milan last week are to be awarded Italian nationality, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said on Wednesday, while indicating that they would have to wait until they're 18 to apply like anyone else.

The dramatic police rescue of 51 children on a bus hijacked by their Italian driver of Senegalese origin on March 20th has gripped Italy and rekindled debate about its citizenship laws.

"If there are children who are not Italian citizens, we have studied this question and we will complete the process so that they can become Italian," Salvini said after meeting five of the children and some of the police who saved them in Rome.

Salvini, the head of the anti-immigration League party, stressed that Italian nationality would be awarded "without any variation in the law, since the law exists and works, we do not change it".

Children of foreign parents who are born in Italy can only apply for citizenship when they reach 18.

It is not known how many of the children are concerned, but 14-year-old Ramy, born in Italy to Egyptian parents, and 13-year-old Moroccan Adam played key roles by calling police during the hijacking.

As some Italians and Ramy suggested changes to the citizenship law, Salvini had earlier told the boy: "Get elected and then you can make the law."

The previous centre-left government said it would change the law to make it easier to grant citizenship to foreigners born in Italy but the law was never passed, largely due to opposition from the League.

Malta's armed forces have taken control of a tanker that was allegedly seized by migrants off Libya on Wednesday.

The tanker, Elhiblu 1, has docked in the Maltese capital Valletta. More than 100 migrants on board are expected to be handed over to police.

The migrants had been rescued by the ship but reportedly hijacked it after being told they would be returned to Libya.

They are said to have told the captain to head north towards Europe instead.

EU naval mission 'failed to end people smuggling'
Mediterranean migrant crossings 'deadlier than ever'
Sharp fall in illegal migration to EU
The man behind Italy's migrant drop
In a statement, the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) said they had established communications with the captain of the ship when it was still proceeding towards Malta.

The captain said he was not in control of the vessel and that he and his crew were being forced and threatened by a number of migrants to proceed to Malta.

A patrol vessel stopped the tanker from entering Maltese territorial waters, and a special operations unit team was dispatched to board and secure the vessel, the AFM said in a statement.

Malta's Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, has said all international rules will be followed as police investigate the incident on the vessel.

It is not clear what will now happen to the migrants, but they've reached the destination they wanted, says the BBC's Southern Europe correspondent James Reynolds.

Italy's interior minister, Matteo Salvini, had earlier called the migrants "pirates" and said they would not be allowed to dock in Italy.

He described the act as "the first piracy on the high seas with migrants", according to the Associated Press news agency.

Italy migrant crisis: Government passes tough bill
Salvini shuts ports to migrant rescue ship
The incident comes as the EU says it is ending navy patrols in the Mediterranean.

The EU says the decision to suspend Operation Sophia in September follows a request by Italy.

The mission was put in place four years ago to deter people smugglers and rescue migrants trying to reach Europe by boat. Tens of thousands have been saved.

Lately, the mission has largely targeted smuggling networks as the number of people making the crossing dropped sharply following a controversial deal between the EU and Libya.

But Mr Salvini, the leader of the right-wing League party, has blamed Operation Sophia for continuing to bring rescued migrants to Italian shores.

He has been at the centre of a number of international rows over his refusal to allow migrant ships to dock in Italian ports.

Migrant arrivals from North Africa and the Middle East have fallen since reaching a peak in 2015.

An estimated 150,000 illegal crossings were registered by Frontex, the European Border and Coastguard Agency, last year, the lowest amount since 2013.

It's quite common for sixth form students, mainly from independent schools, to go on trips to countries like Ghana on 'goodwill' programs, such as building schools. Crime / Nigerian Charged With Raping UK Schoolgirls At Gunpoint In Ghana by AbujaBlue: 7:32pm On Mar 27, 2019
Two men have been charged with rape after four British schoolgirls and their teacher were held at gunpoint and sexually assaulted during a trip to Ghana.

Ishmael Akyene, 34, of Ghana, and Daniel Akpan, 29, a Nigerian national, were charged with a string of offences and have both been remanded in custody.

The group of UK sixth-form teenagers - who cannot be named for legal reasons - were viciously held at gunpoint and raped in Accra, Ghana's capital city, on December 8, 2018.

The pupils - made up of boys and girls - as well as two teachers, travelled to Ghana for a pre-Christmas holiday and to get a glimpse of how the local inhabitants live.

But shortly after their arrival, a number of armed men entered their accommodation and held the group at gunpoint and the female victims were subjected to serious sexual assaults.

Police in the UK assisting the West African country's authorities in their investigation confirmed Akyene and Akpan had been charged, while local media reported that one other person, said to be their accomplice, is on the run.

'Two men have been charged as part on an ongoing investigation by police in Ghana, which is being supported by a UK police force', said a police spokesman.

'Ishmael Akyene, aged 34 years, a Ghanaian national, has been charged by Ghanaian police with 14 counts of robbery, one count of rape, one count of conspiracy to rape, one count of possession of a firearm, one count of possession of an instrument intended for unlawful entry and one count of money laundering. He has been remanded in custody.

'Daniel Akpan, aged 29 years, a Nigerian national, has been charged by Ghanaian police with 14 counts of robbery, two counts of rape, one count of conspiracy to rape, one count of possession of a firearm, one count of possession of an instrument intended for unlawful entry and one count of money laundering. He has also been remanded in custody.'

They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them, GhanaWeb reported.

The police statement continued: 'The victims continue to be supported by specially trained police officers, their school and other agencies.

'Detectives from UK policing will continue to support the Ghanaian authorities as the investigation continues. Work is ongoing to locate an outstanding suspect.'

Unconfirmed reports suggested that a security guard had been shot but UK police were not able to confirm this.

Gareth Southgate's England team continued their red hot start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 5-1 win away to Montenegro on a night marred by alleged racist chanting from the home fans.

Montenegro shocked England by taking an early lead through Marko Vesovic, before goals from Michael Keane, a double from Ross Barkley and Harry Kane put the Three Lions 4-1 up.

The final goal of the game came from Manchester City star Raheem Sterling, a player who may well be in the best form of his entire career. Fresh off the back of his hat-trick at home to the Czech Republic, Sterling capped this impressive night off with a deft finish after a threaded through ball from Jordan Henderson.

After scoring the goal, Sterling cupped his ears towards the home fans in a gesture that is believed to have been a direct response to alleged racist chanting that was aimed at members of the England team.

His celebration was met with anger and jeers from the home fans, some of whom through objects towards Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Speaking after the match, Southgate confirmed that he had heard abuse towards Rose at the end of the game and said that his team would ensure that the abuse was reported correctly.

"I definitely heard abuse at Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game... We'll make sure that's reported officially. It's not acceptable," said Southgate.

Italy bus hijacker wanted kids as human shields for Africa escape:

The driver of a school bus who torched the vehicle to protest Mediterranean migrant deaths planned to use his young passengers as human shields and escape to Africa, Italian media on Friday (Mar 22) quoted him as saying.

"I wanted to get to the runway at (Milan's) Linate airport using the children as human shields and from there head to Africa by plane," Corriere della Sera daily quoted Ousseynou Sy as telling investigators.

"I didn't want to harm anybody," insisted the 47-year-old of Senegalese origin, who hijacked the bus Wednesday while taking 12-13 year-olds from a gym to school in Crema, east of Milan.

Armed with two petrol canisters and a cigarette lighter, Sy threatened the youngsters, took their telephones and told the adults to tie them up with electric cable.

Their 40-minute ordeal ended when police managed to smash windows open and get those onboard out just as Sy set fire to the vehicle.

Sy now faces having his Italian citizenship, obtained through marriage in 2004, revoked.

According to the Corriere della Sera, Sy has told investigators he hates white people for having "invaded and colonised" Africa, forcing Africans to emigrate and "die in the Mediterranean".

The director of Michael Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland has criticised Barbra Streisand over comments she made in response to the film.

The two-part documentary details allegations of child sexual abuse against the late singer by two men — Wade Robson and James Safechuck.

In a new interview with The Times, Streisand admitted she "absolutely" believed the two men, though appeared to lay the blame at the doors of the parents.

"His sexual needs were his sexual needs, coming from whatever childhood he has or whatever DNA he has," she said.

"You can say 'molested', but those children, as you heard [the grown-up Robson and Safechuck] say, they were thrilled to be there. They both married and they both have children, so it didn’t kill them."

Asked if she was angry with Jackson, Streisand continued: "It’s a combination of feelings. I feel bad for the children. I feel bad for him.

"I blame, I guess, the parents, who would allow their children to sleep with him? Why would Michael need these little children dressed like him and in the shoes and the dancing and the hats?"

Dan Reed, who directed the documentary, has now hit out at Streisand's comments on social media, writing: "'It didn’t kill them' @BarbraStreisand did you really say that?!"

Update on story:

Italy to grant citizenship to student hero who saved dozens of children on hijacked school bus

Italian police say a quick-thinking student hid himself and called authorities when a school bus carrying 51 children was hijacked and set on fire by its driver. Because of his heroic act, the Interior Ministry says it will speed up granting citizenship to the student, who is from Egypt, and the ministry will also cover the costs of the citizenship process.

The mayor of Crema's secretary said the student pretended to pray in Arabic while, in reality, he was warning his father, who alerted police of the hijacking.

None of the pupils, aged between 11 and 13, was hurt after police arrived and broke the back windows to free the passengers, a police spokesman told CNN.

The driver, named by police as 47-year-old Ousseynou Sy, a Senegal-born Italian citizen, was arrested and faces attempted murder, kidnapping, resisting arrest and arson charges

Carabinieri spokesman Marco Palmieri said the bus was supposed to return to the school in Crema, northern Italy, after the pupils attended a gym session on Wednesday. Instead it headed toward Milan's Linate airport.

"The driver doused petrol on the bus and threatened to blow it up," said Palmieri. "He requested all the children's mobile phones -- but one kid managed to hide and called us."

"Apparently he told the driver 'I didn't bring my phone today.' You know how canny kids are these days," Palmieri added.
Carabinieri took the threat seriously and immediately rushed to the scene, outside Milan, Palmieri said. The driver made teachers on the bus tie up some of the students with cable ties and had a knife, authorities said.

"While some colleagues were negotiating with him, others smashed the windows and got the passengers off the bus," he continued. "That's when the driver set the bus on fire."

'Little hero'

The Carabinieri of Sandonato Milanese identified the student as 13-year-old Ramy Shehata. The office of Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said it would grant citizenship to Shehata.
"The Interior Ministry is ready to take on the expenses and speed up the procedures to recognize citizenship for the little hero. The hope is to attribute ... citizenship to Ramy and remove it from the bus driver," said a statement from the interior ministry.

Carabinieri who received Shehata's call said the teenager was able to give them the bus' exact location over the phone and said his actions were "essential for the rescue."

"Ramy called us and had his head down looking through the glass door and was able to read the signs on the road, giving an exact location of where the bus was and where it was going."

The driver has been previously convicted of sexual assault and driving while intoxicated, according to police. He allegedly yelled "You're all going to die" and "I need to avenge the deaths in the Mediterranean," Palmieri said, in an apparent reference to migrant drownings in the Mediterranean.

These are the two unlikely heroes from the kidnapping. The first is Ramy Shehata, a 13-year-old Egyptian boy who called the police aboard the school bus that was hijacked and later set ablaze by a Senegalese bus driver. His father said he would like to see his son get Italian citizenship.

The second unnamed boy managed to open the back door of the school bus today ensuring the getaway for all of the 51 children inside the burning bus.

“He tied us to the floor covered in petrol and took our phones away so we couldn’t call the police,” one of the 51 children held hostage in a school bus set on fire by a driver of Senegalese origin who wanted revenge for migrants “dying at sea”.

The driver was apprehended and treated for burns. Prosecutors described him as a 47-year-old Italian citizen of Senegalese origin and said he told authorities he wanted to vindicate Europe-bound migrants who have died in the Mediterranean Sea but did not plan to hurt anyone.

However, prosecutors said the suspect, identified as Ousseynou Sy, made preparations that showed his actions were premediated, such as buying a canister of gasoline and restraints on Tuesday.

He also sent a video to friends in Italy and Senegal indicating plans for a bold action and with the message, “Africa, Rise up,” they said.

'Mum, the driver wants to kill us': Survivors of Italy's school bus hijack describe terror

Witnesses have described the terrifying moment when a bus driver took more than 50 schoolchildren and teachers hostage onboard a coach that he then set on fire.

"He let us on to the bus and immediately barricaded us in," a teaching assistant said, recounting how the school bus hijacking in Italy unfolded before 51 children escaped as the driver torched the vehicle.

"I was a second away from death," Tiziana Magarini told AFPTV on Thursday, her eyes still red and her voice unsteady a day after the harrowing incident.

On Wednesday, a 10-minute bus trip turned into a 40-minute nightmare for schoolchildren in Crema, east of Milan, after their driver hijacked the vehicle and tried to drive it to a Milan airport.

Driver Ousseynou Sy was usually "very well behaved, normal," Magarini said. But on Wednesday, the Italian bus driver of Senegalese origin came to work with a knife and cans of petrol. Seeking to draw attention to migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, Sy tied the two teachers to the door and told Magarini to tie up the children, using electric cable.

She said she "tied them up badly", so they could get free. When Sy collected everyone's mobile phone, "I managed to let some of the children know with my eyes to keep them," she added. Sy then asked her to finish pouring the petrol over seats and curtains, as the children panicked.

"The screaming, I couldn't calm them down," Magarini said. "He was saying weird things, I didn't really understand. He was talking a lot about Linate airport. But he didn't say what he wanted to do. He said 'I don't want to hurt you' and then he threatened us."

"No one is getting out of here alive," Sy reportedly told the students as he diverted from the route back to school and took the motorway to the airport.

"He said repeatedly that so many people in Africa keep dying," said one girl.

The bus stopped and started several times while children telephoned for help. One said they called police who didn't understand. They then called their father.

'The driver wants to kill us'

Another boy exchanged voice messages with his mother. "Mum, we're on the bus, I don't know where they're taking us... the driver wants to kill us, he has a gun, call the police," the recorded message said, according to Italian media. Magarini discreetly called the school switchboard, where a colleague picked up and heard children screaming.

As police cars converged on the bus to stop it, "the children were banging on the windows, calling for help," said policeman Roberto Manucci, one of the first on the scene.

The driver crashed through a roadblock, taking out a car, before being trapped by others. Several police distracted him at the front of the hijacked bus while colleagues forced open the back door and smashed windows.

"I heard an explosion at the back window and in two seconds an amazing team was there, they got them all out," said Magarini.

Amateur video shows the terrifying moment as the children ran away screaming and crying. At the same time, Sy set fire to the petrol-soaked vehicle with a lighter before being subdued by police. Trapped next to the driver, Magarini was dragged to safety by a policeman.

"I was a second away from death," she said.

Police carried out a hostage rescue operation "like you see in films about special forces", said Milan prosecutor Francesco Greco.
