Update:

There was a "steady stream" of people being allowed briefly back home. Police were taking mobile phone numbers in case of emergencies.

Resident Margot Graham said: "We were told it was at our own risk, but it's a calculated risk.

"Things like bricks and mortar and CDs and books can be replaced, but if my grandmother's ring had disappeared into the water, that couldn't be replaced."

A Derbyshire police spokesman said they were keeping a close eye on the empty part of the town

"We would like to reassure residents and business owners that a staffed cordon around Whaley Bridge remains in place where officers are monitoring who goes in and out of the town.

"Officers are in the area and will be carrying out patrols at periods throughout the day.

"We also have a drone in the area which will assist with crime prevention," they said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited on Friday and promised a "major rebuild" of the dam.

Emergency crews are racing to save a damaged reservoir, as "terrified" residents fear their Derbyshire town could be flooded.

Police say the wall holding back the 300-million-gallon Toddbrook Reservoir could still fail despite about 24 hours of efforts to shore it up.

Part of the dam wall collapsed on Thursday afternoon.

The 1,500 people evacuated from Whaley Bridge amid "mortal danger" warnings will not be allowed home tonight.

But the water level has dropped by half a meter thanks to ten fire service pumps moving 4.2 million litres of water every hour - with more pumps on the way.

An RAF helicopter is also halfway through dropping 400 tonnes of aggregate on the collapsed section.

How dangerous is it?

Police, the Environment Agency, and the Canal and River Trust have all said there is a "real risk" the dam could collapse.

Julie Sharman, from the Canal and Rivers Trust, said it was "a critical situation" but added the weather had improved and the water levels had reduced by 20cm.

"We aren't putting a figure on any risk of collapse but everything that can be done is being done," she said.

Engineers are attempting to get the reservoir's water level down, to reduce pressure on the wall and allow repairs to begin.

What happened?

Part of the reservoir's spillway broke away on Thursday.

It was damaged after large swathes of the country were battered by heavy rain and floods earlier in the week.

Police told residents in Whaley Bridge to gather at Chapel High School in neighbouring Chapel-en-le-Frith.

They were told to take pets and medication with them as it was unclear how long it would take to repair the damaged wall.

Pumps from fire services across the country have been pumping out 7,000 litres of water a minute.

Army engineers are clearing trees and bushes to get "five or six" more water pumps in on south side of reservoir.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service said more than 150 firefighters from across the UK have been supporting the work at the dam and in the town.

A severe flood warning, which means a threat to life, has been issued for the River Goyt below the reservoir.

What does it mean for residents?

About 1,500 people left their homes after police told them to pack up their medication and pets and gather at an evacuation point.

Some stayed with relatives while others bedded down in pubs and hotels, with lots of businesses offering free rooms.

Police said residents would not be allowed back on Friday so would spend a second night away from their homes.

Bev Goodwin lives in Chapel-en-le-Frith and put up her mum and dad, Joy and Steve and two friends - Susie and Angela.

Joy said: "We have nothing. No clothes, no toothbrush, nothing.

"We have been thinking about what's in our house that we would miss - all our kids' pictures and of our grandchildren - it's upsetting."

Susie said: "It's just surreal that it's happening in our town, it's just bizarre."

Mike Breslin described it as a "crazy situation".

"They should never have built a school and a social club at the bottom of a dam. It's madness," he said.

Eric Baker, who has lived in the town for 30 years said: "It's shocking really, it's like living next to a ticking bomb. If that goes the devastation will be unimaginable.

"We saw the water coming over at a tremendous rate on Wednesday and the park was flooded but it wasn't until Thursday the people who look after it started to look worried.

"Then it started to collapse on Thursday and it made a tremendous noise as the concrete slabs began to collapse.

"The disruption is huge, the small shops and businesses are really being hit and of course we don't know when it will be over."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: "We just fled. I managed to take my nightdress and we've got the tortoise in the washing up bowl in the car.

"It's quite terrifying. If the dam goes, it will take out the whole town."

When will it be fixed?

Nigel Carson, who lives near the dam, said he had been told it would take two or three days to reduce the reservoir to a safe level if it does not rain.

There are no weather warnings in place for Friday, and the Met Office has said it expects much drier conditions.

BBC reporter Richard Stead described the operation to fix the dam as "a two-pronged attack".

He said: "The Chinook is bringing aggregate on the one hand to shore up the dam, but also to divert water further up the valley away from the reservoir.

"There are also 16 high-volume pumps being used to relieve the pressure on the dam.

"Only when that is done can work start on permanent repairs and finding out what went wrong."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked the Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers to chair an emergency meeting.

Crime / Eight Year Old German Boy Dies After Migrants Pushes Him In Front Of Train by AbujaBlue: 9:56pm On Jul 29, 2019
An eight-year-old boy has been killed by a train after a 'stranger dressed in dark clothing' pushed him and his mother from a platform in Germany.

Horrified witnesses say they saw the man push the child and his mother, 40, in front of a high speed InterCity Express at Frankfurt's main station at about 10am.

The boy's mother was able to save herself by rolling into a narrow gap between tracks, but she lost hold of her son who was fatally hit by the oncoming train.

Local reports say the man, dressed in black trouser and an olive T-shirt, attempted but failed to push a third victim off the platform at the busy station which witnesses said was full of children at the time.

He tried to run off but was chased and overpowered by passersby before being detained by police, who have opened a murder investigation.

Police say there appears to be no connection between the 40-year-old suspect, thought to be from Eritrea, and the mother and son. The motive for the attack is not yet clear.

Several witnesses needed medical treatment after seeing the death, hessenschau.de reported, and a conductor, who saw the incident from a train, shouted as it was happening.

The station was 'full of children' a witness told the publication. Another, who was on the train, said 'people collapsed howling'.

Four of the busy stations tracks were closed following the attack, causing delays for dozens of commuters.

The ICE train, travelling from Dusseldorf the Munich, is capable of running at speeds of up to 186mph (300kmph).

According to news channel NTV, the suspect is a citizen of Eritrea.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer issued a statement condemning 'this appalling act in the strongest terms' and cautioning against drawing conclusions before more is known.

Seehofer said that in view of 'several serious crimes' recently, he would interrupt his vacation and meet the heads of security authorities Tuesday.

Gaming / US Teen Wins $3m (₦1bn) In Fortnite World Cup (Photos) by AbujaBlue: 12:16am On Jul 29, 2019
A US teenager has won a record-breaking $3m (₦1bn) to become world champion of the computer game Fortnite.

It is the largest prize pool in the history of e-sports, with $30m shared amongst the winners.

Kyle Giersdorf, 16, won the solo event of the competition in the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, which hosts the US Open tennis tournament.

British teenager Jaden Ashman won almost £1m for coming second in the duos event.

Mr Giersdorf, known online as 'Bugha', stood laughing and shaking his head as the crowd erupted when his name was announced.

He told the BBC he wants to save most of his prize. "All I want is a new desk and maybe a desk for my trophy," he said.

The final game was described by the commentators as a "ridiculous victory lap" as the winner played with a smile on his face whilst beating his rivals.

The event is seen as a major moment in e-sports, which is estimated to be a billion-dollar industry in 2019.

However, its record for the biggest prize pool is already set to be broken by another event called The International, taking place in August.

The Fortnite finals saw 100 players battling on giant computer screens.

Forty million players attempted to qualify over 10 weeks of online competition.

More than 30 nations were represented with 70 players coming from the US, 14 from France and 11 from the UK.

The game involves 100 players being dropped onto an island where they have to find weapons, build structures and eliminate each other until one player comes out on top.

It has 200 million registered players worldwide and is free to download, but players can spend money on in-game purchases.

Players can play alone, as part of a four-person squad or a 20-member team, either with friends or people they do not know.

Crime / German Teens Riot, Try To Free Friend From Police Station (Photos) by AbujaBlue: 7:53pm On Jul 26, 2019
School end-of-year parties are often riotous affairs, but they rarely end with 100 teenagers laying siege to a police station.

That was the scene in the lakeside Bavarian town of Starnberg on Thursday night, after police were called to a party and arrested a boy, described as drunk and aggressive.

The teen was put in a cell, prompting schoolmates to seek his release.

Police said the crowd threw bottles and tried to break down the front door.
What happened at the party?

First reports of trouble came at 21:45 local time (19:45 GMT), hours into a summer party at Starnberg's Gymnasium school, to which students, teachers and friends had been invited.

According to the school, a private party was taking place on a footpath just outside the school and that is where things got out of hand.

A 15-year-old boy had approached a security guard asking for drugs and had gone on the rampage, police said. Police were called but the schoolboy, who was described as drunk, remained aggressive and was ordered to leave the party.

When he refused, "policy custody was all that remained", they said. Some of the boy's friends tried to intervene and one of them reportedly tried to kick a policeman in the head.
Riot at the police station

By the time the officers had reached the police station, a crowd of up to 100 people had formed outside. The head teacher was unable to say whether pupils from his school were among them.

Around 50 people threw bottles and stones, and some of them tried to force their way in to free him. A window was broken and the police sign at the entrance was torn down, a police statement said.

Some 70 extra police were called in and a 19 year old was temporarily detained on suspicion of trying to release a prisoner and damaging property. Security at Starnberg police station was stepped up for the rest of the night.

As for the 15-year-old who sparked the whole thing off, reports say he was handed over to his parents and taken to hospital for treatment for a headache. He tested positive for alcohol and drugs, Süddeutsche Zeitung said.

The boy is not a student at the school, says Starnberg Gymnasium, adding that many of its students have written to the police saying they are opposed to violence against the authorities.

The coast guard is also a unit in the America Navy that reports to the Homeland during times of peace but reports to the American Military during times of war. Yes our very own SBS is also a highly specialized and trained equivalent of the American coast guard.

Not a unit of the US Navy, but a branch of the US armed forces. Is the 12th largest navy in the world.

Completely different to the Nigerian SBS which is a small elite unit (modelled on British SBS).

This an incredible picture of Matthijs de Ligt and Luis Suarez during the latter's Ajax times. How the time flies!

The Uruguayan has managed to conquer the Premier League, the La Liga and the Champions League while the Dutchman has grown to be the hottest prospect in the world's football and close to the Barcelona move. There is a 12-year gap between the two, however, they share the same roots.

There is still a chance that Ajax and Barcelona face each other in the Champions League final which is set to take place at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid on 1 June. However, they need to overcome Tottenham and Liverpool first. Still, the possibility of the Johan Cruyff-inspired final at the biggest European stage is a real dream.

Moreover, according to ESPN and other top sources, De Ligt could still end up at the Camp Nou stadium as he is expected to follow the example of his Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong. The midfielder cost Barcelona 75 million euros and they are likely to pay the same amount of money for the defender as well.

De Ligt has been at Ajax since 2009 when he was just 10 years old. He was promoted to the first team in October 2016. Since then, he has made 110 appearances for the seniors and scored 11 goals, including the crucial winner against Juventus this week. Incredibly, the 19-year-old is currently Ajax captain.

Luis Suarez's Ajax tenure, meanwhile, lasted between 2007 and 2011. He scored 111 goals in 159 matches for the Eredivisie giants.

Travel / Teenager Climbs London's Shard With No Safety Ropes, Bypasses Security (Pics) by AbujaBlue: 9:12pm On Jul 08, 2019
The daredevil who 'freeclimbed' the Shard early this morning has been revealed as a 19-year-old from Oxford who spent months casing the building to discover when lax security would allow him to achieve his 'dream'.

George King told MailOnline he experienced a 'Godlike feeling' at the top of the building saying: 'It’s a totally remarkable experience. Euphoria is an understatement.'

But he also revealed he had scoped out the building - considered one of the capital's most likely targets for terrorist activity - every other day for three months wearing numerous different disguises.

He said: 'It took me four months to plan to get there. I moved to London to plan this climb, so I was close to the Shard.

‘I spent months looking at sensors, looking at cameras, timing security.’

He said he discovered the security, both police and building security, was ‘least active’ around the London Bridge area at around 5am.

Asked about his reconnaissance of the building, he explained: ‘For three months it was every other day, and I’d change my disguises regularly.

‘Sometimes I’d be in a suit, sometimes I’d be on crutches, sometimes I’d be in sporting clothes and I’d lean on the pillars looking like I was stretching but I’d be measuring them against my body’.

At around 5am today Mr King took just 45 minutes to scale the capital's tallest building without the aid of a harness or rope, prompting police to rush to the scene and a review of security by the building's Qatari owners.

He was encouraged in to the building at around the 95th floor after he reached the summit by Scotland Yard officers, whom Mr King said were 'excellent', adding: '‘they didn’t pressure me, I think without sounding arrogant they were very impressed.’

Describing the experience of reaching the top of the 1,017ft-tall building, the largest in western Europe, he said: '‘It’s a totally remarkable experience. Euphoria is an understatement.

'It’s Godlike feeling, when your endorphins and dopamine are all firing at once. It’s indescribable.’

Mr King, who was the first person to freeclimb the tallest climbing walls in both the UK and Europe, said said he did it because it was a 'dream' sparked when he was just 13 on a school trip to Londonb.

'I saw the Shard and thought, "one day I'm going to climb that".'

The young daredevil, who was not arrested, said he had already identified his next climbing challenge but would not reveal the details - saying only it was 'in the UK'.

Earlier today Mr King told Mirror Online: 'When I was 13 I first saw the Shard and thought I have got to climb this. That planted the seed for me.

'I have done a lot of preparing for this, I have just kept on working at it. I am speechless - It is unreal.'

He said the hardest part of the ascent came just before the 95-storey building's tapering peak.

'There are generators near the top of the building and there was a lot of dirt and grease on them, and I had to push on to the next level to get past them,' he said.

In an Instagram post after his climb, Mr King wrote: ' "In the past I’ve been called a daredevil, an adrenaline junkie, a reckless teenager and much more. I’ve always found that these names come from those who are ignorant or misunderstood about what I really do and why.

'It takes years of training and careful preparation to be where I am today, and this practice is achievable only because I see myself as someone who has followed a respectable passion, albeit an unusual one.

"I believe that every single one of us has a gift. Your mission is to find that gift, make it your passion, and then make it your purpose.'

The billionaire Qatari owners of the Shard have today launched a review of security after a 'freeclimber' was able to scale the capital's tallest building unhindered for the second time in two years.

Police officers rushed to the 1,017ft skyscraper overlooking London Bridge at 5.15am with witnesses claiming the daredevil managed to the top without using a harness or a rope.

Scotland Yard has said with the help of Shard staff that they managed to get him inside - but later confirmed he was not arrested and allowed to go free.

The 95-floor skyscraper, which looks like a shard of glass and is owned by the tiny but super-rich Gulf state of Qatar, is considered one of Britain's top targets for terrorists and protests.

Bosses will now be reviewing whether they need to 'tighten security' because of the stunt, the second of its kind since 2017.

Footage taken from below the Shard - western Europe's tallest building - shows the climber near the top as crowds gathered below and were heard gasping as he climbed without any ropes.

David Kevin Williams tweeted video from the ground and said: 'The guy's got to the top and is being spoken to by the police'.

Another witness who watched the drama unfold wrote: 'One person climbing up the outside of the Shard in central London. Two police cars, two ambulances and a drone on the scene'.

The incident raises questions about how the man was able to dodge security and scale one of Britain's most high-profile building unhindered.

A Met spokesman said 'Police were called at 5.15am following reports of a 'freeclimber' on the Shard.

'Emergency services attended and the man went inside the building where he was spoken to by officers. He was not arrested'.
