TobiAbuja:
Very sad, though I had no idea these people had such a presence in Mexico. For how much longer? You can't fall out with the cartel.

Mormon vs cartels - it's a bizarre matching.

But members of the community in La Mora have not organized in the same way. They have had a kind of truce with the organized crime group that controls their region, which many here describe as a largely benevolent force of order in a remote region rarely visited by authorities. Locals say the cartel keeps thieves out and even makes sure drivers obey the speed limit.

On Thursday, Jessop attended the memorial service for Dawna Ray Langford, 43, and her sons Trevor, 11, and Rogan, 2.

Five of Langford’s other children were wounded in the attack. One of them was shot in the jaw. Another was shot in the stomach.

The memorial service was held on a sloping green lawn behind a handsome stucco home that belonged to relatives of the Langfords. The 400 guests sang together and prayed together, and then listened as Langford’s children told stories about their mom.

Langford’s husband, David, sat in the front row with his second wife, Margaret. Though not all members of the community here practice polygamy, the Langfords did. This breakaway sect of Mormons ended up in Mexico after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began cracking down on polygamists.

Bryce Langford, Dawna’s eldest son, recalled his mother’s love of coffee and her habit of telling stories that sometimes stretched beyond the truth.

“She was my best friend, the perfect coffee partner and the perfect mother,” he said between tears. He recalled first hearing about the shooting on Monday, and driving frantically from North Dakota.

“Every mile that we drove down got more and more painful because the reality was sinking in,” he said.

Many members of the community were thinking about leaving Mexico, said Joe Darger, a Utah resident whose daughter lives in La Mora. “I didn’t feel safe. No one feels safe,” he said. “And that’s your primary need as a human being.”

As the sun set Thursday, the Miller family was preparing a funeral of their own. They put out hundreds of folding chairs for a memorial service in the backyard and erected wreaths of flowers, including one that spelled out “Angels” in pink roses. The youngest victims in the Miller family were twins Titus and Tiana, who were born March 13.

At a certain point, people got hungry. They looked to Loretta Miller. So she took out cheese and turkey from the refrigerator and began making sandwiches.

As families here began burying their dead Thursday, there was an eerie sense that the ground had shifted and life for the Americans had changed. The community did not just grieve for the victims. They mourned a bygone time in which Americans, and especially women and children, were off-limits.

“Our lives will never be the same,” Miller said. “This is the first time I’ve ever thought that I might not spend the rest of my life in Mexico.”

The funerals drew hundreds of friends and relatives from across the United States and Mexico. Those who traveled from the U.S. were met at the border by Mexican soldiers, who escorted them to La Mora.

Willy Jessop, who came from Utah, said some people were afraid to make the trip, fearing they might be targeted.

“Everyone had to balance fear and love,” he said. “But I think love won out.”

Members of the Mormon community in Chihuahua state learned several years ago just how ruthless organized crime had become when a teenager was kidnapped and held for ransom and then the young man’s brother was killed.

In response, members of the community formed their own vigilante police force and spoke openly about smuggling high-powered weapons in from the United States.

“That showed the mafia there that it’s not worth it to mess with us and that it does more harm than good,” Jessop said.

Crime / Re: Mormons Mourn Massacred Relatives, See Inside Their Mexican Compound (LA Times) by AbujaBlue: 1:39pm On Nov 09, 2019
On Monday, LeBaron joined a caravan of women and kids who were leaving town to head to the border to pick up Howard, who was flying back from North Dakota, where he works in the oil business. Traveling together, the women thought, would protect them from the dangers of driving desolate roads through drug cartel country.

Shortly after leaving, LeBaron got a flat tire. The caravan returned home and LeBaron asked Miller: “Do you think that’s a sign that I shouldn’t leave here?” But she left anyway, switching vehicles and heading out again in Miller’s 2011 Chevy Suburban.

When Miller’s son went to check on the broken-down vehicle, he found the Suburban in flames. Up the road, other members of the Mormon community would later discover the two other vehicles that had been part of the caravan riddled with bullets and strewn with bodies.

In total, three mothers and six children were killed by assailants who many here believe were members of a Chihuahua-based drug cartel. The group has been feuding with another cartel that controls La Mora and other parts of Sonora state.

Mexican officials said assailants waged two separate attacks against the three-vehicle caravan.

The first was against 30-year-old LeBaron and her four children, at around 9 a.m. The second occurred about two hours later and about 10 miles up the road and targeted the other two vehicles. It’s not clear why or when the vehicles separated.

Authorities said the gunmen fired .223-caliber ammunition that is manufactured by the American firm Remington and used in M-16 and AR-15 assault rifles.

Eight children survived the second attack. Five were airlifted to Arizona to receive medical treatment, and three were brought to Miller’s house. She stripped them of their bloody clothes, bathed them and massaged them until they finally fell asleep.

“They cried for hours and hours until they couldn’t cry anymore,” she said.

Her son Howard arrived in La Mora on Monday night, bearing gifts for his three surviving children, who were not with their mom in the car that day. The toys helped distract them, but they know what is going on.

Since his life as a family man exploded in a hail of gunfire, Howard Miller hasn’t talked much, except to play with the children. “I love you, baby,” he tells his daughter Amaryllis, 5, cradling her on his lap. “Come here, big boy,” he says to Tristan, 8. In the den where he cuddles them hangs a sign that says, “Families are forever.”

“The cartels had always respected the family,” Miller says. “But they’ve become more ruthless.”

Mexicans have long known that. Homicides have been at record levels for the last several years here, but most killings go unnoticed by the international media.

Police and journalists swarmed this bucolic farming community, but a similar response wasn’t seen when 27 people were burned to death in a strip club in Veracruz in August, or when 14 police officers were ambushed and killed in the span of less than an hour in Michoacan in October.

Crime / Mormons Mourn Massacred Relatives, See Inside Their Mexican Compound (LA Times) by AbujaBlue: 1:37pm On Nov 09, 2019
Mormons mourn their massacred relatives in Mexico: ‘Our lives will never be the same’ LA MORA, Mexico —

In the days since her 18-year-old son breathlessly reported that something terrible had happened to her four grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Loretta Miller has cooked nonstop.

Burritos, posole, eggs, potatoes, chicken.

She has cooked to feed the Mexican federal forces sent here to protect her family, the relatives arriving to attend the funerals and the streams of international journalists who have come to this remote corner of northern Mexico to find out why nine American women and children were ambushed and killed while driving through the mountains here Monday.

Raising 14 children and 27 grandchildren prepared Miller for this.

“We’re a big family,” she said as a pot of soup simmered on the stove. “We know how to deal with crowds.”

While most houses in this part of Sonora state are made in the Mexican style of adobe or cinder block, Miller’s would not look out of place on a cul-de-sac in a Southern California subdivision. In this land of soccer, even the basketball hoop in the driveway is a giveaway that the tiny hamlet of La Mora is different.

Amid the landscape of cactus and mesquite, the well-paved blocks of American-style homes and manicured lawns stand out.

So do the town’s residents: a community of largely blond and blue-eyed families from a fundamentalist Mormon sect that hold both American and Mexican citizenship.

Their blue U.S. passports separate them from their neighbors, allowing them to work or own businesses in the United States, while many local Mexicans toil in $8-a-day factory jobs in the low-slung maquilas that hug the border.

Until this week, the Mormons thought they had another kind of American privilege: protection from narco violence. In the 12 years since Mexico declared war on its drug cartels, sparking an era of record-breaking bloodshed, criminal groups have committed horrific acts of violence against Mexicans but have rarely targeted Americans like Miller and her family, aware of the bad publicity and unwanted law enforcement attention it would bring.

That unspoken rule was broken this week when the nine American citizens from the Mormon community were ambushed and killed. So too was another drug war maxim: that women and children are not to be touched.

“Until now, I loved living here,” said Miller, who grew up in a similar Mormon community just over the mountains in Chihuahua state.

She said her family has long had close relationships with the locals, who work in Mormon homes and on their pecan and pomegranate farms. When Miller’s son died last year in a small-plane crash, more than 1,000 people showed up to the funeral, and his Mexican friends hired mariachis to play.

Losing her son had prepped her and the rest of the family to deal with Monday’s loss, she said. “If that hadn’t happened to us, we never could have survived this.”

Her son Howard moved down from the U.S. with his wife, Rhonita LeBaron, and their children this year, in part to help out after his brother’s death.

LeBaron, who grew up in the Chihuahua Mormon community but had spent years in the United States, was excited about living again in Mexico, where life was more relaxed and where their seven kids could roam.

“She was the perfect mother,” said Miller.

Travel / Re: Potholes On Road In Nigeria Vs In UK (Pictures) by AbujaBlue: 10:57am On Nov 09, 2019
The UK potholes are on a private road. You'll find these in some residential areas where the upkeep is up to the residents, who won't spend a fortune to tarmac. If that was a public road in the UK it would have long been fixed.

Wickedly misleading thread.

Boy, 13, walked for 6 hours to get help after the attack after seeing mother and 2 brothers shot

A family member of those massacred in Mexico said a 13-year-old boy who was unharmed in the attack walked around 14 miles to get help, after hiding his bleeding siblings in the bushes and covering them with branches following the attack.

Relative Kendra Lee Miller posted a description of the attack on Facebook today, in which she said 13-year-old Devin Blake Langford hid his six siblings in the bushes and covered them with branches to keep them safe while he went for help. Miller also lists the names of the nine family members killed in the attack. Another family member, Tiffany Langford, told CNN that Miller’s account regarding Devin trekking for help is accurate.

Earlier today, CNN spoke with Kendra Lee Miller, who said her brother, Howard Miller and her sister-in-law, Rhonita Maria Miller, were getting ready for Kendra’s wedding that was to take place next week in La Mora, Mexico. Investigators believe three vehicles traveling between the states of Sonora and Chihuahua were ambushed by criminal groups Monday evening. Three women, four small children and two infants were killed. Seven children survived.

Lafe Langford Jr, a relative of the victims, said medics from the Mexican state of Senora reportedly rushed to help, but doctors would prefer to fly them to the US.

She added in a later post: 'Dawna's children escaped with bullet holes in several places on their bodies. The children managed to get help under horrible circumstances.

'The children managed to escape with their baby brother. Baby was harmed with a bullet across his chest and through his arm. ( just got an update) This is a courage act of these innocent children.'

Family member Ruthila E LeBaron posted a photo of her sister and her children, Howard Jacob, 12, and Krystal, 10, were also killed. She said: 'My beautiful sister and her sweet babies'.

Meanwhile Lafe LeBaron described the horrifying scene as his relatives were shot dead or scrambled to safety from the attackers.

He wrote on Facebook: 'It is with heavy hearts and unspeakable sadness we inform you that the 2 missing Mothers Christina Langford and Dawna Langford along with many of their precious INNOCENT children have been slaughtered and gone to their Rest.

'We've had no help from the powers and authorities that be as of yet ....one of the older boys escaped with six of his siblings and he was able to run home to La Mora Municipio Bavispe Sonora Mexico after leaving his wounded, bleeding, and bullet ridden brothers and sisters hiding behind trees from the ongoing shootout between the cartels.

'Teenagers and adults have been scrambling into the mountains to find our loved ones risking their very own lives.... while help is nowhere to be found.'

'Rhonita Miller and her 4 children were shot up and burned to death in this vehicle and at this very moment there are TWO more suburbans with 2 of our families totaling 2 wives and 10 children that are missing and/or kidnapped by the cartel..... We need help immediately!!...'

Authorities in Sonora state and the U.S. Embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The federal Department of Security and Citizens' Protection said security forces were reinforced with National Guard, army and state police troops in the area following 'the reports about disappearance and aggression against several people.'

The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau said in a tweet in Spanish that 'the safety of our fellow citizens is our top priority. I am closely following the situation in the mountains between Sonora and Chihuahua.'

Claudia Pavlovich Arellano, the governor of Sonora, said on Twitter late Monday that 'as a mother,' she was filled with deep pain by 'the cowardly acts in the mountains'.

'I don't know what kind of monsters dare to hurt women and children,' she added.

Senator for Sonora, Lilly Téllez, wrote on Twitter 'the massacre in Sonora cannot go unpunished.'

Manuel Añorve Baños, another Mexican senator described the incident 'a despicable, merciless and savage act' in a tweet, adding: 'We demand justice.'

It would not be the first time that members of the break-away church had been attacked in northern Mexico, where their forebears settled - often in Chihuahua state - decades ago.

The colony was founded by Alma Dayer LeBaron who moved to Mexico as a breakaway from the Mormon church in 1924 after being excommunicated from the church for practicing polygamy.

When Alma died in 1951, he passed the leadership of the community on to his son Joel LeBaron, whose younger brother Ervil LeBaron, was his second in command.

When the brother's split, Ervil had Joel killed and in 1974, was tried and convicted in Mexico for Joel's murder.

In 2009, Benjamin LeBaron, an anti-crime activist who was related to those killed in Monday's attack, was murdered in 2009 in neighboring Chihuahua state.

One of the mothers is said to have got out her car during the siege and put her hands up to surrender before attackers 'shot her point blank in the chest'.

A video posted by a relative on social media shows the charred remains of the Chevy Suburban. It had been burned following an explosion and was smoldering, with bullet holes visible in the paneling.

Meanwhile worried relatives posted on social media that they feared many had been kidnapped and raped. Trish Cloes wrote: 'These women were possibly brutally raped. Please keep them in your prayers.'

Kenny LeBarón, a cousin of the women driving the vehicles, told the New York Times: 'When you know there are babies tied in a car seat that are burning because of some twisted evil that's in this world. It's just hard to cope with that.'

The government deployed the army to fight drug trafficking in 2006, but experts blame the so-called 'drug war' for the spiraling violence between fragmented cartels and the military, which has lead to more than 250,000 murders.

'It was a massacre,' said Julian Lebaron, a relative and activist who has denounced criminal groups in the area, told Formula Radio.

His brother, Benjamin Lebaron, founder of a crime-fighting group called SOS Chihuahua, was assassinated in 2009.

When asked who might be responsible, Lebaron said the attack took place in a 'war zone', home to drug cartels and 'thugs'.

His family 'may have been caught in crossfire or targeted by mistake, we don't know the cause,' he said, but added that the Mormon community had recently been the target of threats.

The community are descendants of Mormons who fled the US in the nineteenth century after being persecuted for their traditions, including polygamy.

One former member is George Romney, father of 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who was born in 1907 in Colonia Dublan in Chihuahua state, according to an NBC report Monday.

The families lived in La Mora about 70 miles south of Douglas, Arizona, and also lived in North Dakota. Many of the church's members were born in Mexico and thus have dual citizenship.

Relatives took to social media said to praise Christina Langford's heoric actions after she reportedly saved her seven-month-old daughter Faith from being shot.

Relative Jasmin Soulsby wrote: 'Christina Langford was killed, but her baby girl Faith, who they thought was dead, was miraculously found alive on the floor of her suburban.

'She has been there all day alone.'

Family member Keisha Johnson posted a photo on Facebook of her cradling Faith, writing: 'This sweet baby girl was found alive! Her momma saved her life! She is an angel!'

Another relative, Alissa Jones, wrote: 'CHRISTINA'S BABY FAITH WAS FOUND ALIVE!!! The rescuers made it to the vehicle.

'She was found thrown on the floor. She seems to not have any immediate life threatening injuries.'

One relative said that seven of his aunt's children had been left abandoned alive by attackers on a roadside. Family members on social media said one boy helped hid his siblings before running for help.

'My aunt Dawna's son Devon hid some of his shot and wounded siblings in the bushes and ran all the way back to town for help,' John wrote.

At least three American mothers and six children from a Mormon family were killed in a shooting in the Mexican border state of Sonora on Monday in an attack blamed on drug cartel gunmen.

Seventeen family members from the LeBaron and Langford families were 'ambushed' eight miles apart while heading to celebrate a wedding anniversary in three cars from La Mora - a decades-old settlement founded as part of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In horrific scenes, gunmen opened fire on one child running away before torching a car as family members burnt to death while trapped inside. Other young children managed to escape and hid by the roadside while a mother was shot in the chest as she put her hands up to surrender.

Relatives fear some of the victims may have been raped.

A relative said a boy concealed his wounded siblings - some less than a year old - in bushes before he ran back to the nearby town to get help after his mother was gunned down.

One of the woman shot dead was Christina Langford, 29, who saved her seven-month-old baby's life by throwing her to the floor of their SUV as bullets tore through the vehicle.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear, although it is possible it was an attempted kidnapping. A family member reported receiving a phone call hearing screams before a killer executed them.

The religious group has had previous run-ins with organized crime cartel in the area, including one member being killed. However one family member they believe it was mistaken identity.

In last night's massacre, Rhonita Maria LeBaron was traveling to Phoenix when her car broke down, according to relatives.

Gunmen opened fire and torched her vehicle causing the gas tank to explode where she died along with her twin six-month-old babies, Titus and Tiana and two more of her children Krystal, 10, and Howard, 12.

Eight miles ahead, Christina Langford Johnson, 29 , Dawna Ray Langford, 43, and two of Dawna's children, Trevor, 11, and Rogan, 3, were also killed in other SUVs. Other family members are still unaccounted for.

Christina's seven-month-old baby Faith was found alive on the floor in the backseat and seven of Dawna's children escaped with bullet holes riddled throughout their bodies, according to relatives.

Sports / Eight Ball Boys Given Red Card By Ref In English Football Match by AbujaBlue: 9:22pm On Sep 30, 2019
Under normal circumstances, eight red cards would leave a match on the brink of abandonment. At Huish Park, however, eight red cards were brandished just to keep the contest going.

That's because referee Aaron Jackson decided the ball boys dotted around the pitch for Yeovil Town's National League game against Bromley were hindering rather than helping the action on the field.

With the Glovers 3-1 up heading into the closing stages, it wasn't just the the home players who were engaging in a bit of gamesmanship.

"One ball boy delayed giving the ball back to Bromley's Sam Wood about 10 minutes from the end and was warned by the referee," explained BBC Somerset commentator Chris Spittles.

"But when the same ball boy repeated the trick shortly after the referee asked for them all to be removed. One steward was tasked with gathering them all in and leading them away down the tunnel.

"I've never seen anything like it."

See below an article on UK Home Secretary Priti Patel's shady links with the crushing verdict where Nigeria was ordered to pay $9bn to small private company P&ID. For that story see: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-49377517

This is a quote from the article. See the full piece attached below (it is only released in hard copy by Private Eye, not online).

"P&ID, which had never built anything but had many well-connected local friends, won its original contract in 2010 with curiously careful provisions for what should happen if the deal soured. When it did sour, arbitrators, more or less unchallenged by Nigeria, found in P&ID's favour in 2017, awarding it US$6.6bn: all the theoretical profits P&ID might have made in a perfect world (in a very imperfect part of the world), for a power plant where ground was never actually broken. And interest of $1m a day."

For those questioning the integrity of Private Eye, it is renowned satirical and current affairs magazine in the UK, and follows stories that the UK national press don't touch. No politician, famous person etc. escape from their investigations (people always try to sue them - and usually fail. Editor Ian Hislop is the most sued man in English history).

Cladez:
Foreign media are hypocrites.Because he commited a crime he is now a Nigerian but if he had archieved a great feat he would have been a British.

Nairaland too should stop promoting such news that keeps painting Nigeria bad.

Where in the link provided was he named as Nigerian? Where in the British media was he named as Nigerian? It is Nigerian media and bloggers who call him Nigerian.

Family / UK Boy Impaled By Trampoline Spring 'Lucky To Be Alive' (Graphic Photo) by AbujaBlue: 11:15pm On Sep 05, 2019
A 12-year-old boy says he is "lucky to be alive" after a metal spring from a trampoline shot into his back.

Jamie Quinlan, from Lincolnshire, was bouncing on a friend's trampoline on Saturday when the spring broke off and became embedded in his back.

He said he felt a "very strange" sensation in his back followed by "a lot of pain".

His father, Ian, from Louth, said his "heart dropped, [and] sank down to my knees" when he saw the accident.

Jamie said the spring was "so heavy" and added he could not believe "I've been through all this".

"It must be rarer than a lightning strike," the schoolboy said.

"I was lucky that the hook actually broke off or it could've been a lot worse."

He was taken to hospital with the spring still impaled in his back. It was removed in an operation under local anaesthetic.

"It was very, very scary," said Mr Quinlan.

"My heart was in my boots.

"It could've been his neck or his head so we were very, very lucky. Very lucky indeed and thank our lucky stars it wasn't more serious."

The schoolboy said he had been playing in his friend's garden with several other children when he came up with the idea of all of them jumping on the trampoline "at the same time".

He said he had no idea the spring had ripped through his T-shirt and was lodged in his back.

"All my friends looked shocked," he said.

Mr Quinlan urged other parents to be vigilant after the freak accident.

"Because they all bounced at once, the trampoline went very low and the spring came away.

"So just be vigilant and watch what's going on."

The youngster was discharged from hospital soon after surgery.

He added: "I am a lot better than I was when I had a spring in my back."

In contrast, Harry and Meghan take a more luxurious approach to flying. The price for their flight was around £20,000 (9 mil Naira). There are rumours of a spat between the two brothers and their wives, with Harry and Meghan made a point of saying they were only having two children to save the planet knowing William and Kate had three. Could the budget flight William and Kate's clever and subtly response?

Prince William, his wife Kate and their children have been spotted getting off a £73 budget flight to Scotland, amid a row over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's private jet trips.

The Duke of Cambridge and Duchess of Cambridge took the 8.45am flight from Norwich International Airport to Aberdeen Airport with their children this morning.

The royal couple and their family can be spotted being escorted from the budget FlyBe plane and getting into waiting vehicles, where they are expected to be whisked away to visit the Queen and Prince Philip at Balmoral.

The Cambridges appearance on the cheap flight will inevitably lead to comparisons with William's brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come in for criticism from some quarters after they took four private jet flights in 11 days this summer.

They flew from London to Ibiza and back before making a return trip to Nice earlier this month, fuelling claims they were contributing to climate change.

A passenger on the plane who spotted them said: 'The family were sat right at the front. I fly this route all the time and we were none the wiser. No-one knew they were on the flight.

'Later on I realised that Kate's mother was sat a few rows in front of me.'

Looking like your archetypal family man on holiday, Prince William can be seen clutching a number of bags while George, six, and Charlotte, four, run excitably alongside him.

Surprised passengers saw Kate walking just behind her husband and holding Louis, one, alongside the family's nanny Maria Borrallo.

Royal author Robert Jobson, who wrote a best-selling biography on Prince Charles, said it proved the Royal Family could take regular commercial flights.

He said: 'There was a lot of nonsense spoken earlier in the week about how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle needed to fly in private jets because of security concerns.

'But the Royal Family have been using cheap airlines for years, Princess Diana would do it frequently.

'William and Kate flying on a budget airline proves you can do it, there was no trouble on the flight, and if there was they have their protection officers.

Pictures show William and family boarding the flight in Norwich. Tickets from Norwich to Aberdeen cost from £73.05 (32,000 Naira) per person, according to Flybe's website.
