I think a section of the city (like the river front for instance) could be reserved for developers willing to build higher than 5 stories, but on the condition that lifts are installed. A independent power supply could also be provided for the highrise estate to help power the lifts.

Whites invented an electricity-free elevator technology almost 150 years ago, but Nigerians are still struggling.

I excluded Abuja and Lagos from the comparison because those are international cities with many foreign-designed buildings. This is the indigenous part of Lagos. It compares well to Onitsha.

They say the government is not allowing Onitsha residents to build higher than 5 stories now. This needs to change. Let the builders build -- simply regulate them to make sure they are doing a good job. Imagine if Dubai, New York and Chicago limited themselves to only 5 stories? Nigerians must have confidence if we want to modernize.

If the government of Anambra would put decent roads and a beautification program (force landlords to paint their buildings, etc) in Onitsha it would be a massive tourist attraction for the whole world. Despite its shortcomings, no one would believe black Africans could build a high density city like this without foreign help. It is a complete anomaly from the usual bungalows and slum cities of West Africa

Onitsha's government needs to do more, though. The public infrastructure is lacking.

I have many foreign friends. They say the situation in Nigerian cities is not normal. It is not normal for cities of 1 - 5 million people to be looking like largescale villages. It's extremely bad for the environment and slows down modernization. Chinese researchers discovered housing density boosts productivity and GDP growth by magnitudes. It also makes it easier for the government to deliver public services like electricity, etc.

Even the great Kano looks like a medieval city. Kano's population is in the millions and they are still living like monkeys.

Onitsha is the only city (outside major cities like Abuja and Lagos) that has a semblance of a human-occupied city in Nigeria. Other cities in Nigeria tend to sprawl out in low density animalistic slums, despite the massive demand for housing and high land prices. An Indian friend remarked to me that Nigeria is the only country where people will spend $100,000 to buy a plot of land in the city center and erect a one-story bungalow.

In his country, they build taller multi-story buildings to house as many people as possible on expensive land. Onitsha is the only city in sub Saharan Africa that looks similar to countries like India, China and Indonesia in the 70s before they modernized. The below image doesn't even look like Africa. It looks like China, Vietnam or Philippines in the 70s
