For me all these issues are not the problem, Nigerians have not realised that all this issues is a diversion be cause we dont read in between the lines. The bill only proposes to give derivation percentage of VAT revenue generated by states back to the states.

This means if the bill is passed as it its, its just going to be a tax war between states which means we the citizens will definitely pay more tax than we currently are.

The farmers should sell their crops at a nice profit and pay their taxes on the profits/earnings. Why should they clamor for VAT again? Are they selling their goods for free? If they don’t want to sell we will grow our foods in the south and import the rest. They can sell their foodstuffs to Niger and ask the Niger government to give them their VAT money, but the Nigerian government will still tax them on their profits/earnings.

You dont seem to understand tax. VAT is paid when you buy, income tax is paid when you profit or earn. Farmers pay neither of the tax, its called VAT exemption. It means FG doesn't collect either VAT or income tax for the local production of food or the profit and earnings made by farmers.

This is what you said. And I am telling you that that is not the issue at all. It is not tax on profit or earnings that this bill is about, it is VAT. VAT is a different tax to income tax. If you get a contract today you will see 2 tax, normally refered to as VAT and Tax. VAT is consumption tax and the other Tax is income tax. You will be charged for both.

Back to the topic, you think because Northerners are the ones talking, this bill will not affect the south? Particularly the South South. Exon mobil for instance, operates in the South South but their corporate office is in Lagos, their VAT is paid in Lagos and when this bill succeeds, it is Lagos state that will get a percentage of their VAT. That is an unfair displacement of the revenue of South South to the South west. The same thing applies for everything produced by companies in all states but the company corporate HQ in Lagos pays the VAT while Lagos collects the huge percentage.

The bill actually favours mainly Lagos state followed by Ogun state.

What you should know is that, when this bill passess, there are very many VAT that will be paid by what you consume in all states of Nigeria but its Lagos state government that will benefit.

This beer tax that you guys have been talking about saying the north doesn't drink beer but collect the tax, most of the tax now will go to Lagos state and Ogun. It is not only the north that it will affect. The more you drink Guinness stout in Port harcourt, the more money Lagos state gets. The more Coca Cola you drink in Borno, the more money Lagos gets. The more you fly out of Owerri airport, the more money Lagos gets. The more Dangote Cement you buy, anywhere in Nigeria, it is the more Lagos state gets.

VAT is consumption tax. VAT is the tax you pay when you buy a goods or service. Why is there a VAT exemption on food? Its actually a form of subsidy. It this tax bill passes, those states that produce goods and services in large scale which are on tax exempt will be missing out on the VAT revenue even when the other states that their produce is not on VAT exempt will be cashing out even when consuming the goods and services that are VAT exempted.

The bill will cause an agitation to remove all VAT exemptions thereby causing us to pay more VAT. That is direct increase in hardship for Nigerians no matter the state you are.

The second condition is call spread.

Look at the US election for eg, simple majority is not enough, the electoral collage is the spread. The spread ensures that bulk vote from few populous states do not allways determine the winner. The real determinant of the winner should be both spread and simple majority. Thats why US election seem to be unfair in the sense that a candidate can win simple majority of more than 50% but will still lose the election like Donald trump won against Hilary Clinton. Ours election is both but the spread is the most difficult to get.

Independant candidate means a politician who is non partisan and can vie for president without being in any party. It only means he is not fielded by a party, thats all.

What are the criteria for winning the presidency or governorship

1. Simple majority
2. He must have 1/3 of the the votes cast in 2/3 of all states.

5% is simple majority but 5% cannot give you 1/3 in 25 states. Pls understand how it works.

Let me give you mathematical example.

If 50million people vote in an election and the simple majority has only 5%, that is, 2.5million votes.

But on the second condition, lets assume all state have equal votes. 50m/37= 1.35m per state. He requires 1/3 of 1.35m of 25 states. That is 1.35x25÷3= 11.25.

That means for candidate to win, he must have atleast 11.25m votes out of 50million to win.

So no, 5% votes can never win an election.

This tax bill has nothing to do with petroleum or national grid.

Unproductive states you say, is it Rivers state or Bayelsa that produces the oil in Niger delta or the FG. Is it States that produce electricity? What is productive about Lagos state government when its the FGs presence that made it commercial hub. PH is another commercial hub made by FG. Kano is a 3rd commercial hub but it is not the FG that made it a commercial hub. If the same FG say they will give more to a state they favoured only because of geographical and natural factors, that means they are not fair to other states like Nasarawa that FG has no investment in. Mind you Kogi, Ebonyi, Benue Nassarawa has Lead, why has the FG not developed mining such that their VAT will be higher. Why is Ajaokuta steel mill, a company that can solve the entire steel needs of Nigeria still comatose and yet you will say Kogi is unproductive. It is the failure of FG that some states are unproductive.

This bill is about VAT. Lagos is tech capital of Nigeria thats why all Bank HQ are in Lagos. All companies that depend on imported raw materials are either in Lagos or PH because of the ports. Locate them in Borno are the cost of production is going higher. Niger state topography is suitable for electricity dam thats why 4 dams are located there. All gas turbine generating stations are located in the closest to source of gas, any other location will increase cost of electricity production. It is a natural thing to put a square peg in a square hole but for you to say a state produces more VAT when FG created the reason why that state produces more VAT is completely wrong.

The fact is, if all Nigerian resources where in one state, every thing produced in Nigeria will be from that state. All fingers are not equal thats why the longest finger (middle finger) is preferable for giving the finger to a woman for more effectiveness.

Tinubu is using textbook economics thinking it will play out exactly as the books have said. He did the same with subsidy, it backfired on Nigerians. He did again with forex, it exploded on our face. This one will annihilate us.

What he thinks is that the bill will cause states to sit up and economic growth will happen in every state just as textbooks analyze. But what will actually happen is state fighting states and tax paying organisations will be caught in between fight and transfer all the aggression on Nigerians once more increasing inflation. It will be bad for many companies as states will either force industries to locate factories in their state or risk hostile state laws limiting the companies supply chain. This means state borders will be manned by state tax agencies aim at frustrating targeted businesses that dont pay tax to them. This essentially means Nigerians will pay more to get products

The truth of the matter is that if you want local government autonomy of whatever you call it,you have to change the constitution completely. Even the constitution says the LG is under the control of the state government.

Worldwide there is nowhere there is 3 federating units. It is always two. The Federal and state.

In a true federalism like it's practised in the US. The LG is under the control of the states. The US has over 80,000LG and states create LG as they wish.

Here in Nigeria,coupled with the fact that the money being given to the LG are not even enough to pay salaries and that is why the states created joint LG accounts to offset the bills of LG since 1999.

All states have been offsetting the bills of LG because even the money they collect isn't up to anything

The main problem is State assemblies. These bills that cripple local governments are passed in the state house of assembly and those people are are toothless dogs. They cant even bark. Governors will woll just storm there and shoot all of them.

Its the state assemblies that need that autonomy, then every other thing will flow.

Since CFA is stronger and Naira is weak, they now have more purchasing power to smuggle more. The advantage is theirs.

That smuggling will even get worst because our neighbours currencies are getting strong while ours is getting weaker. They can afford to buy more and more. The more the price of petrol in Nigeria the lower the value of the Naira and the higher the purchasing power of our neighbours. As long as Naira depreciates, smuggling will increase.

I know that government could have made the price cheaper through pegging an exchange rate for sale to local refineries or selling crude cheaper locally. It is just not profitable. But government must do something quickly before they cause class suicide due to hunger and poverty. Yes truly. There was also a time Israelites only lived there before war displaced them. There was a time that there was as little as a very few people. My final thoughts are, its a senseless war by people who fire missiles amidst civilians. Israel has regular military barracks like normal countries and its easy to target which reduces civilian casualties. That is fulfilling the role of any military, to protect civilians and their territory.
