Data Analysis is SATURATED because everybody and their Mummies have gotten into it.

Anybody who can write a SUMIF Function in Excel thinks he's a data analyst. And they'd apply for the same job as you.

Even if you are more competent, your application is bound to get lost in the sea of other applications. And if you don't have a tech or maths related degree, that's another HURDLE.

You have 2 options:

1. SPECIALISE:
You can do this by selecting a specialisation like health or finance and streamlining your data analysis skill to that area of specialisation.

You will need to learn industry lingos and data requirements that are relevant to that industry.

Most sector that require data analysis in Nigeria is a SHIIITSHOW. The most mature of them is the banking and finance sector.

So I'd advise you to specialise in Financial Analysis. CFAInstitutedotorg has valuable resources that'll help uou.

Plus, you can BOLSTER your CV with ICAN certification.

2. GO DEEP:
Here you just bury yourself deep into data analysis until you come out at the other end which is Machine Learning.

ML is an integral part of AI and data analysis is an integral part of ML.

Those are your 2 options.

By the way, DISCARD the idea of getting a remote job. Most companies in Nigeria don't offer remote jobs. Maybe hybrid but NOT fully remote.

And NO foreign company will entrust their SENSITIVE business data to a Nigerian living in Nigeria.

For other people looking to get into tech, RESEARCH and choose a tech skill that's NOT dependent on getting a job.

Learn a tech skill that'll set you on the path of entrepreneurship.

Because the tech market is still a JOB market with all the problems that face a typical job market. Lile layoffs, job scarcities and low payments.

Learn a skill that'll help you BUILD for YOURSELF.

On the other hand, why not work on some projects with some already established Data Analyst.

You know the world we live now , Companies aren't Patient enough to hire rookies.

Get some projects unto your resume.

if I didn't have a portfolio with projects..I wouldn't post this. I have 6 solid projects yet no job.

Many persons who enroll in programs like Alx, Altschool, and co often have unrealistic expectations about what to expect in the field of tech.

I was among the first batch of students that registered for Altschool. A lot of folks who enrolled for the program had really massive constructive imaginations.

Some were talking about getting a $10K/month job after graduation. One even said he can't wait to start working in Google by the time he gets his Altschool diploma 😂

When th program began, we just saw that it wasn't worth the social media hype it had. Many of us had to voluntarily stop to be more effective in our learning.

I don't know of Alx, but from the little I've gotten from folks who took the program, I think they did a great job. At least were much better than Altschool.

All in all, success in tech still boils down to one's personal effort, dedication, and consistency. I don't really subscribe to these naija bootcamps or whatever they call them.

The problem with this data analytics is a bit saturated. Getting a job is a hard nut to crack. Ive studied it. I need where i can put it into good use.

In short you don't need to leave your initial background before breaking into tech, and when you choose data analysis do not be tempted to move higher by learning artificial intelligence or deep learning without having solid experience as a junior data analyst..The data you learn with online, is entirely different to the volume of data you will have to deal with out there in the real-world.. as an R user I will say why learn caret when you can't even work with tidyverse package??

Since you guys are from same state, I think you both are familiar with your traditions. But I'm curious;
- Why do they have to wait for you to finalise the dad's rite? (abi na so the tradition be )
- It's clear they don't want the dad's family to be involved, do you know about her childhood and all, cause in some families, papa family fit no send d children at all but when's it's time for marriage they wan come siddon for high table...I think you should have a conversation with her to know why she doesn't want them involved...maybe with you she'll learn to forgive them (if that's the case).

no matter what happens, the dad's family takes the major call during weddings like this. I wasn't in good terms with my late dad's brothers but when my dad died and younger sis wanted to get married, I had no option than to involve them.

Her dad is late, and in their village, there's a rite that must be done for the late dad before any TM. I told her I would like both TM and white wedding to be done in the village since we are both from the same state and it'll be easy for me so I know I'm done with any wedding. she disagreed citing that she wanted her friends, colleagues, and family to be present as they cant travel due to the economy. I considered so it wont look like I'm selfish and I wanted my people to be present more. I agreed to do the white wedding in our current base to balance up everything.

Few weeks later, her elder sister suggested we do the late dad's rite only in the village , then come to lagos and do the TM citing that's the way she did hers as they don't want people who weren't there for them to reap where they didn't sow. I disagreed and told them I gave my sisters hand in marriage last year and both TM and white were done in the village to make everything easy. Also told her most TM I attend are done in the village. They reluctantly agreed and stuck to the initial plan but said we should do it on a low key of which I agreed.

Note that all the while I was visiting her family in Lagos, it was only her mom's people that were present. I asked after her dad's siblings and they said they were in the village. I told her its necessary to be in good rapport with her dads people as they are the major deciders.

I requested for her dad's brothers contact so he will help me on some things since he will be standing as her dad. I called him and we started making plans. Few days later, my babe called me that my uncle told her 'I wont be around on the late dads rite, that ill send my younger brother'...i was shocked and angry and told her I never said that. my instincts told me its false as they wanted the TM to be in Lagos. The next day, her mom and sister called and were telling me they don't like the way I'm calling the uncle and asking him things.

It was a heated argument and I told them I've called off the wedding plans, we exchanged words and I hung up. The uncle called me next day and I told him what my babe said and he said he never said such.
