A caretaker, Abdul Bello, on Wednesday dragged Khadija Afolabi, a tenant, to a Sharia court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, demanding her evacuation from the compound because she disclosed her rent to other tenants who paid higher rates.

The complainant accused the defendant of not keeping to her promise of packing out of the house three months ago when she was served with a notice from the landlady, Hajiya Farin-Dutse.

Bello explained that the house, located at No 24, Yoruba Road, contained two flats.

He said that Afolabi took one flat and had been paying an annual rent of N130,000 for four years, while the other tenant was paying N150,000.

“She begged me to talk to the landlady to consider her financial status and accept N125,000, which I did, and the landlady agreed but only accepted N130,000,’’ he explained.

The caretaker accused the tenant of revealing the amount she paid to the other tenant, an act he described as gossip; and which triggered a misunderstanding between the landlady and the other tenant.

He prayed the court to compel Afolabi to pack out of the house immediately, since her rent had expired since December 18, 2018; and as the landlady had already given out the flat to her cousin.

In her defence, the defendant denied any act of gossip in the matter, adding that she had been paying her rent diligently.

Judge Musa Sa’ad-Goma, after listening to both parties, ruled that Afolabi should pack out of the house on or before January 8.

TO make 2019 a better year for Nigerians, President Muhammadu Buhari and 33 of the 36 governors of the country have promised to implement budgets that will cater for their socio-economic well-being, provision of infrastructure and amenities among others. Altogether, the president and the 33 governors have proposed a combined N15.737 trillion budget, which is N109 billion less than the N15.846 trn they budgeted in 2018. Most of the budgets are yet to be passed by the legislators. Only a few states’ proposals have been passed. Lagos, Cross River and Zamfara states are yet to present their budgets. Cross River and Lagos were the heaviest spenders in 2018, with each passing a budget of over one trillion naira. Of the N15.737 trillion budgets, N5.818 trillion was earmarked for capital expenditure while recurrent expenditure got N9.285 trillion. Most states prioritise capital expenditure Most of the states allocated more funds to capital expenditure. The exceptions, which joined the Federal Government in proposing more money for recurrent projects are Bayelsa, Enugu, Ekiti, Kwara, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno and Taraba states. S/South, S/West zones emerge as top spenders On zonal basis, South-South (N2.001 trillion) and and South-West (N1.158 trillion) are the biggest spenders while South-East (N870.313 billion) and North-Central (N895.909 billion) are the least spenders. The remaining two zones – North-West (N1.059 trillion) and North-East (N922.951 billion) are in the middle of the pack. Lower budgets for 2019 Like the Federal Government, 15 states have proposed lower budgets for 2019 compared to what the spent in 2018 in view of the dwindling fortunes of the country on account of unsteady price of crude oil, Nigeria’s main revenue earner. The states are Bayelsa, Rivers, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Yobe and Borno. Higher 2019 budgets States that upped their budgets in the 2019 are Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Benue, Niger, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba. Big spenders Pending the announcement of Cross River and Lagos budgets, the highest spenders as of now are Akwa Ibom (N670.718 billion), Rivers (N480.644 billion), Ogun (N400 billion), Delta (N390.3 billion), Oyo (N285 billion), Imo (N276 billion), Bayelsa (N275 billion), Adamawa (N244 billion), Kano (219.7 billion), and Katsina (N200.741 billion). Least budgets Those with smaller budgets are Nasarawa (N86.643 billion), Yobe (N91.6 billion), Enugu (N109.199 billion), Borno (N125.82 billion), Ekiti (N129.9 billion), Abia (139.542 billion), Taraba (N146.074 billion), Kogi (N146.736 billion), and Plateau (N148.7 billion). 2019 Budget Presented by President Muhammadu Buhari at the at a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja Why we are pursuing socio-welfare budgets — Governors Presenting Akwa Ibom State’s N670.72 billion “Budget of Industrialisation for Poverty Alleviation” to the state House of Assembly, Governor Udom Emmanuel, said the 2019 budget was intended to establish more industries and attract more direct foreign investments. Mr Emmanuel said the preparation of the budget was guided by the International Public Sector Accounting Standard (IPSAS). He said the policy objectives of the 2019 budget were to broaden and diversify the state’s resource base through improvements in the collection of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). The budget would also boost production of local businesses through the promotion of trade, commerce and tourism between the state and the rest of the world, he said. According to him, the policy objectives of the budget will also aim to develop agriculture through the supply of improved agricultural inputs, credits and extension services. For Delta, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said his N367.1 billion “budget of sustainable growth” would enable his administration consolidate on its achievements in the past three years. Details of the budget showed that the sum of N209.9 billion would be spent on capital expenditure while the sum of N157.1 billion was proposed for recurrent expenditure. The governor pledged to ensure stable growth that would position Delta State as a dynamic economy. N79.6 billion was also proposed for road construction while the education sector would gulp the sum of N26.8 billion To Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, his N109b ‘’Budget of Peace, Equity and Prosperity’’ will continue from where the 2018 budget stopped and improve development of urban and rural areas. Reeling out achievements of his administration in the last three years which include, massive rehabilitation of roads both in urban and rural areas as well as in health facilities, agriculture and education, Ugwuanyi said Enugu remains one of the most peaceful and safest states in Nigeria. He said his administration has invested heavily in agriculture noting that this was to ensure that no family in the state goes to bed without food. “We want to make sure that no family goes to sleep without food, this is why this administration has mapped out various agricultural programmes to ensure adequate food production,” he said. In Kwara, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed said the objectives of the state’s N157.8 billion Budget “include expanding the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) capacity of the state through land administration and electronic collection for sustainable development; creating an enabling environment for investors through improved infrastructural development; developing human capital development and job and wealth creation.” Gov. Ahmed maintained that the overall objective of the Budget is to consolidate on the gains of the past years and to ensure completion of all on-going projects across to ensure good welfare of the citizenry. In like manner, Governor Aminu Tambuwal said Sokoto State’s N169.65 billion “Budget of Consolidation for Sustainable Growth and Development,” would focus on completion of projects started in 2018 and execution of new ones. Tambuwal stated that 2019 would be the fourth year of his administration, thereby stressing the need to consolidate on all the administration’s achievements. “This is to set such achievements into motion so as to improve the living standard of our people. For the fourth year running, the education sector got the highest allocation of over N47.4 billion, representing 27.9 per cent of the total estimates,” he added. The governor explained that the policy thrust of the budget was to ensure sustainable economic development through substantial investment in critical sectors. He said that the sectors included education, agriculture, healthcare delivery, exploration of mineral resources, investment in renewable energy and infrastructure. “We will prioritise effective resources management and seek intervention in areas with high potentials to create job opportunities, generate income and improve revenue generation,” he said. The governor gave the assurance that the government would continue to work to strengthen capacity building of scheduled ministries for better service delivery. “We will continue to promote our partnership with the private sector in areas of strategic importance to our development objective.’’ Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who thanked God for being the first person to present eight budgets in Oyo, noted that it was challenging to rule the state. While presenting a budget of N285 billion to the state’s House of Assembly for the 2019 fiscal year, out of which N100,535,047,409.14 (61.50%) was allocated to the economic sector, Ajimobi noted that the budget took into consideration the challenges in the outgoing year arising from almost complete reliance on Federal Allocation, which be said, had grave consequences as Federal Statutory Allocation itself was dependent on extraneous factors. He added that more efforts shall be geared towards harnessing all available sources of internal revenue to the state. “It is to be emphasized that capital receipt shall be ring-fenced in line with the Federal Governments’ fiscal sustainability plan. The preparation of this proposed Budget Estimates has therefore been as realistic as is practicable, to ensure a more pragmatic and productive performance in the budget implementation.”

The Nigeria Police Force has asked the lawmaker representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, to surrender himself for arrest and investigation for attempted culpable homicide.
It stated that the police operatives deployed in his house with an arrest warrant would not leave his Abuja residence until they apprehended him.

The Force spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said in a statement on Monday that Melaye had repeatedly spurned several invitations asking him to report for investigation into the alleged shooting of one Sgt. Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force while on stop and search duty along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi State.

He explained that Melaye and his armed thugs shot and injured Saliu who is currently on admission at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

Police investigators, he said, had invited Melaye through a letter of invitation dated July 23, 2018, signed by the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, and addressed to the Clerk, National Assembly, Abuja.

Moshood said, “Melaye was asked to report on July 26, 2018 at the Kogi State Police Command, CIID, Lokoja to answer to a case of criminal conspiracy and attempted culpable homicide against him under investigation in the Kogi State Police Command.

“The claim by the Senate President in the media that the police did not submit a letter of invitation to the Clerk of the National Assembly is therefore incorrect as can be seen on the attached letter with acknowledgment stamp of the Clerk, National Assembly, Abuja, dated July 24, 2018.”

The police also tendered copies of pictures of the injured officer, the invitation letter to Melaye addressed to the Clerk of National Assembly and the medical report from the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, confirming the admission of Saliu to the hospital for gunshot injury.

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator, Advocate for Peoples’ Rights and Justice, Victor Giwa, has condemned the police siege and move to arrest Melaye, describing it as an abuse of his rights.

The activist, in a statement, asked the police to follow the proper procedure laid down by the law if the lawmaker was needed to answer to any charges.

He added, “As an organisation, we see the continuous occupation of the residence of Senator Melaye as a gross violation of his right to freedom of movement and personal liberty, as provided in the constitution.

“If the police need the senator for any offence or for trial in court, there are proper procedures laid down by the law to follow; anything outside that is persecution. We therefore insist that we shall mobilise our allies as civil society to resist any form of intimidation or harassment by the police. An injustice to one is an injustice to all.”

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Monday alleged that some unnamed persons from the South West and North were ganging up against his 2023 presidential ambition.

Okorocha spoke to journalists at his Ogboko country home in the Ideato North Local Government Area of the state.

He said despite the orchestrated plot against his political career, he would contest for Presidency in 2023.

The governor alleged that his current political predicaments in the ruling All Progressives Congress started two years ago in Lagos State.

According to him, an unnamed politician summoned his political subordinates including his deputy, Eze Madumere, to Lagos and plotted the chart to stop his political ambition by all means.

The governor said, “What I am suffering now in APC started two years ago in Lagos. They called my subordinates including my deputy and asked them to team up to fight me.

“Hope Uzodinma joined them lately. They decided to use him because they saw him as a strong person, being a sitting senator.

“The whole thing is about my 2023 presidential ambition. They want to shut out any Igbo man who is strong politically from the 2023 presidential race. But despite the gang up, I must contest for President in 2023.”

Okorocha also alleged that there was an ongoing conspiracy to stop him from going to the Senate in 2019.

Saying that he was too big to represent just a senatorial district after being a governor for eight years , the governor said his mission to the Senate was to go and make a positive difference.

“There is a conspiracy to stop me from going to the Senate. Hope Uzodinma has joined Senator Osita Izunaso. There is an alliance with Jones Onyereri. They will use security agencies to stop me. I am going to the Senate to make a positive difference,” he said.

Okorocha said he was fighting what he called neo-colonialism in Imo politics.

Maintaining that political forces from the West and North were working to hijack the state’s politics, the governor said, “If care is not taken, a time will come in Imo State that before a sitting governor appoints a commissioner, he will first get an approval from either the West or the North.

“Most of the Igbo elite have compromised but I am the only person who has not compromised and will not compromise.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission is currently under severe pressure not to include the display of election results at polling units and the electronic transmission of results to INEC server in its manual for the conduct of the 2019 polls.

Regardless of the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to assent the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, INEC still reserves the power to issue guidelines for the training of its personnel and the conduct of the elections.

But there are fresh fears that the electoral umpire has come under pressure to exclude these two critical provisions in its guidelines, raising fears that these might be exploited to compromise the outcome of the polls.

A reliable source in INEC said that despite the state of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, the inclusion of the two provisions would have guaranteed that the outcome of elections in the polling units could be sustained when the results were announced.

The source stated, “You are aware that most of the time, when results are not displayed on the walls of the polling units, the results are usually tampered with between the polling units and the collation centres.

“So, what the provisions are meant to do are to ensure that the results remain the same as those announced at the polling units and ensure that the results are received faster in a server and no one could tamper with them.”

These two elements, according to reliable INEC sources, which are expected to guarantee the transparency of the 2019 general elections, may be missing in the guidelines.

Another INEC official, on Saturday, disclosed that certain powerful individuals had been making moves to ensure that these provisions were expunged from the election guidelines.

He refused to give specific names and parties of the personalities and groups mounting the pressure.

He said the display of the results at the polling units had been tested during the Ekiti and Osun states’ governorship elections in 2018.

“You will recall that an INEC official in Osun attempted to remove the result that was displayed in a polling unit in Osogbo because of the disparity between what the polling officer submitted at the Ward Collation Centre and the certified, counter-signed result of the polling unit,” the official said.

The official stated that it would not be a surprise if these provisions were eventually jettisoned for manual collation of results and sending of result sheets rather than sending results electronically to INEC central server with the card reader.

it was learnt that the commission had carried out a test-run of these two provisions with significant successes in the exercises carried out by INEC since after the 2015 general elections.

We won’t accept outcome of any flawed elections –PDP

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party said it will not accept the outcome of any flawed election next year.

The former ruling party said INEC must put in place measures that would ensure credible elections.

It said parts of the measures must include the display of election results at all the polling units in the country and the electronic transmission of results to INEC server in its manual for the conduct of the 2019 polls.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, on Saturday, alleged that there were plans by the commission to rig the elections in favour of the ruling party.

He added that it was because of this alleged move that could make the commission to “behave in such a manner that would give the nation an impression that it doesn’t know what it is doing.”

He added, “We want credible, free, fair and acceptable elections next year. We know that there are dubious people who are mounting pressure on the leadership of the commission to jettison due process in order to subvert good process.

“We want all these to be included in the manual and they must be adhered to and follow to the letter. Anything short of that will not be acceptable to us as a party.”

Our processes not open to manipulation — INEC

He said, “There is no pressure on INEC to discard its processes. The transmission of results from the polling units to our central server during elections is a long standing procedure that cannot be subjected to any external influence.

“On the other hand, the commission introduced the pasting of results at the polling units in order to engender transparency in the electoral process. It was introduced during the Anambra State governorship election and has been repeated in subsequent elections. It has come to stay.

“INEC will never betray the public trust reposed in it. Its processes are sacred and not open to any manipulation. Nigerians are enjoined to disregard the rumour.”

Efforts to reach the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, proved abortive. Calls made to his mobile telephone line were not answered. He had also yet to respond to a text message sent to him as of 9.19pm

What more can you tell us about yourself?

I am the first child of Pastor Taiwo Odukoya and the late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya of the Fountain of Life Church. I am married and I have two children. I am also the head of marketing and strategy of a financial institution. I am a marketer by profession. I became a pastor three years ago.

Why don’t you work for your father?

My father has always been a firm believer in the need for people to work after their studies. Being a pastor is a calling, but in this age, a pastor can have a regular job. I am aware that in the past, the wor k of a pastor was full-time. Also, my father wanted us to gain the experience of working in an organisation so that we wouldn’t feel entitled to anything in life.

Why did it take you three years to become a pastor?

At a time, I didn’t want to become a pastor. I think most pastors’ children have the same mindset. I didn’t think to work for God was a bad idea, but my parents sacrificed their lives for people. I felt Nigerians were quite needy, and for me, I didn’t want to carry responsibilities. But deep inside of me, I knew my life was created to serve God. It is somewhat funny that when God called a man, he called his family members too. Whether we are preaching or not, our lives (Odukoya’s children) are a testimony of who we are as Christians.

I wasn’t in the church when my father ordained me as a pastor. Though I wasn’t ready, he felt it was time. He ordained me during a Sunday’s first service. People began to congratulate me when I came in for the second service. I didn’t understand what happened until I was briefed. But as soon as I became ordained as a pastor, my life experienced a major shift.

Did you have formal training as a pastor?

I attended a Christian university. Also, if your mother is a cook and you live with her, you will surely know how to cook as well. Growing up in a Christian household meant I was open to my parents’ lives. My father has always been who he is and it was the same with my mother before her death. They were amazing and I learnt from them. Also, God is not looking for perfect people; he is looking for available people for him to use. I have never believed I am perfect. I am a worship pastor at the Fountain of Life Church.

Did your father make it compulsory for his children to be pastors?

Amazingly, he never did. But he made us pray and follow God’s ways. Most times, Christians unconsciously put pastors’ kids under pressure. I remember how people would caution us while playing like other kids, saying our parents were pastors. But with the way our parents brought us up, we were not resentful to Christianity; we even wanted to know more about it.

Are your other siblings pastors too?

Yes, we are all pastors. My younger brother was ordained in 2004 in the United States of America by another pastor. The last time I saw my mother in the US in 2005, Jimmy couldn’t make the trip because he was preaching at a conference. My mother was so proud of him. Though he is an actor now, he is a different person when he holds the microphone. My younger sister was also ordained three years ago.

How would you describe your father’s personality?

He is the most amazing man on earth and down-to-earth. I always think of how God loves me for making Pastor Odukoya my father.

My father is very simple, wise and he truly loves people. He chooses to see the best in people even if the person does terrible things. He always tells me that everyone has a bad part; so we should celebrate the good side of people. I guess his love for people made it easy for him to be a pastor. My father is not pretentious. When I think of the way he lives, I desire to lead a better life. He is my best friend; there is nothing I cannot tell him and he knows my secrets. I am myself when with him and I trust that he will always tell me the truth.

When my mother passed on in 2005, I put my trust in my father and he literally led the children out of that dark period.

How did he cope with the loss of his wife?

That period wasn’t easy for him. Suddenly, my father was becoming an old man. When I returned from the US, he was looking like a 70-year-old man. I was a 300 level student at an American university when my mother died. On getting home, I saw him seated on the floor in his room, looking aged. He couldn’t talk well; he was obviously broken. But the hurt and pain didn’t make him despise who God was. I think his hope in Christ pulled him out of the dark period. For almost five years, he slept on the floor as he couldn’t sleep on the bed without his wife.

Were the children surprised when he remarried?

I told him to remarry. At a time, he didn’t want to remarry; he was not ready for it. He still wore his wedding ring for almost six years after my mother’s death. It was when he went to the US for a check-up that his doctors, who were friends to him and my mother, looked for a way to take off the ring. They asked him to remove all his jewellery for the check-up and they made sure he didn’t wear the ring back.

When he told me to study for master’s degree, I said there was no way I would leave him in Nigeria. I pushed him to get a new wife; it is not good for a man to be alone.

What does he miss most about his wife?

He misses my mother. But my father’s present wife, aunty Nomthi, is amazing too and I feel God has closed the chapter of my mother and opened a new chapter in my father’s life. I am sure he misses my mother and I am sure he loves Aunty Nomthi too. The two episodes of his life are two different journeys and cannot be compared with each other.

My father and mother were like ‘bread and butter’. I am sure he cherished all the time spent with her. They understood each other and they were really in love. My father’s love for my mother made him push her to achieve great things. People kept wondering who the pastor of the church was when my mother was alive. Whenever I told them it was my father, they argued with me. My mother became more popular because she was on the television, but people didn’t know that it was my father’s idea. Everything she did, my father made her do it. If you had the opportunity to see her on television, she gave credit to my father.

My father is not threatened by anyone’s gift and he is ready to support one to attain the height of God’s plan for one. There are many influential and gifted people in the church, and they know that my father will always support them.

How did the children cope with people’s expectations?

My home was a haven. At home, my parents always made us believe that we were children of God, not pastors’ children. Though there was pressure from outside, they always told us that they were proud of us. We became interested in impressing our parents, not the public. Once my parents were okay with what we did, we didn’t mind what other people thought of us.

Do you feel that your father’s shoes are too big for you?

Yes, I feel so and it explains why I don’t want to wear his shoes. I have my own shoes. If I want to measure my life by my father’s I will get a high blood pressure. My father made me understand that God called me for a different purpose and for a different generation. I don’t try to compete with my father. His life and the purpose are different from mine.

He has done his best to make us who we are today and gave us the necessary tools as Christians. The children can only aspire to be like him; we are not under any pressure.

Did you get any preferential treatment in school because of your parents?

I was not treated specially; I once repeated a class during secondary education. If I did something wrong, I was whipped. But I tried not to misbehave because I didn’t want to tarnish my parents’ name. Even when we were schooling in the US, we were careful of our behaviours. We didn’t want to bring any shame to our parents. Till date, we check each other social media pages. Once I see anything that is not ideal, I tell my siblings to delete it and they do the same to me too. We don’t want any backlash to come to our parents because we love them so much. My father did well for us and we are trying to pay him back.

Does your father’s name open doors for you?

I wouldn’t say my father’s name opens doors for me, but the seeds my parents have sown in lives have helped the children. Whenever people meet me, they always tell me how wonderful my father is.

Since I use Odukoya-Ijogun as my surname, strangers don’t really know I am Pastor Odukoya’s daughter. When I went for a job interview, the woman who attended to me didn’t know who my father was. When she discovered, she asked that I should be called and queried why I didn’t disclose my identity. I apologised and I told her I didn’t think it was necessary for a job interview.

My father has urged us to build ourselves as individuals and never to rely on their fame. For instance, we don’t see the church as ours but God’s church. My father has told us many times that we shouldn’t feel it is our church.

Most of the places I’ve worked, I am sure people would have a good thing to say about me because I created my own personality there. I am glad for my family and the name, but I need to make a name for myself because my father made a name for himself too. By God’s grace, I am trying my best to do that.

How does he remember his late wife?

We try to remember her on her birthday, the day she died. Every birthday, we call each other and say nice things to each other. We don’t pretend to forget her death day, but we have chosen to celebrate her life. For us, it is a gift that she came to this world even though she left too soon. If she didn’t come, she wouldn’t be our mother or made any impact.

My father is a good Christian. As a human being, he has the right to question God for his wife’s death but somehow he understands God and His works. Despite his wife’s death, it didn’t shake his faith in God and that also challenges the children. My mother died on December 10 and I fell seriously ill during that period, but my dad left me for the church. He called my aunt to stay with me, saying the church needed him. The church was really in disarray during that period too. He rates God higher than any other thing. Since God gives and takes, we shouldn’t lose the giver and hold on to the gift because the giver will always give us gifts.

Did he use the cane on his children?

People felt my mother was a disciplinarian, but she only whipped me once. My mother was talkative, while my father is calm. I guess that was why people felt my mother would be tougher than my father. But don’t be deceived by my father’s gentle demeanour.

My father didn’t spare the rod while we were kids. I became a very fast runner in school and I also did athletics in the university because of my father. He was always chasing me with the cane. Whenever I jumped the table or chair, he did same too. He is blessed with strength. At home, my father was the disciplinarian, while my mother was calm.

How did he appreciate his children whenever they did well?

My parents spoilt us with compliments as my father wanted to have confident children. He didn’t want us to feel inferior; so, he celebrated every little thing we did as children.

In academics, I was a slow learner. Though he wasn’t always too happy with my performances, my mother ensured he said something nice to me. My mother felt I was a creative person like her, but my father was of the mindset that I could always do better in school. Being an intelligent man, he didn’t understand why his children didn’t know certain things.

Who apologised first whenever your parents had any disagreements?

It was both of them. Once my mother did anything wrong, she would hug him and cook something nice. Whenever my father wronged her too, he would call her ‘Abimbuze’ and give her a peck. They were friends. It was possible they fought in the room, but I only saw them disagree a few times.

Did he pamper his children?

He didn’t spoil us as kids. Whenever we went to him for things, he would ask if we wanted or needed them. He taught us to have respect and value for money. He told us nobody owed us anything, including him. People say I am down-to-earth, but I learnt that from my father. He made us understand that we were not better than other children and that a child from a poor home could become rich tomorrow. My father didn’t come from a wealthy home but his story has changed now. Also, there is nothing my father has that he cannot give. Before my father gets upset, he takes a long time. He has perfected the art of calmness having seen a lot. He even talks to me on the need to control my emotions.

Did he restrict his children’s movements when they were young?

Yes, he gave us a time we must all return home. When I was dating the man who is now my husband, I must be home before 9pm no matter where I was. My husband knew this too.

Was he warm with your male friends?

He was friendly, but he would tell us that he hoped we were not engaging in carnal relationship. He always reminded us that there were different sexually transmitted diseases. My father is very blunt; he says whatever he thinks and he pays attention to one’s reaction to know the truth. When I got pregnant, he played the role of my mother. He told me the things I needed to do.

What does he still desires to do?

I think the world doesn’t know my father as they should. A lot of people enjoyed my mother on TV, but my father is as amazing as her too. I have been trying for years to convince him to be on TV, but he doesn’t like the idea. He doesn’t have plans to go on TV, but by the grace of God, we are planning to push him on TV. He carries much wisdom and I feel we are only enjoying him in the church.

What are your dad’s regrets?

I don’t think he has any regrets. As a child of God, we don’t have regrets. We see everything we go through in life as a lesson for the journey. But each time he preaches, he wishes my mother was still alive. He loves his late wife but God’s ways are not our ways.

Does he have interest in politics?

He loves Nigeria and he is very passionate about the country. We pray for Nigeria in the church every day as my father felt that God made him a Nigerian for a reason. He is very patriotic and he believes that Nigeria will be better in his lifetime.

Are there plans for him to retire anytime soon?

My father is still agile. He has a body of a 40-year-old but he is over 60. I am sure he will retire at the right time. He knows when to bow out when the ovation is loudest. He doesn’t overdo things.

How does he relax?

He doesn’t relax. He has dedicated all his time and life to God and the church. You will always see him praying, listening to a message, preparing for a message, counselling or attending to the church needs. We are still trying to make him look for a way to relax; we told him he is not getting younger anymore. Whenever he travels out, people want him to visit and preach.

How often does he spend time with the children?

I am always in his house every Sunday and we talk every day. My siblings talk to him every day too. My mother’s death brought us even closer.

Where is his twin?

His twin is a lady but she is not a pastor like him. All my father’s siblings worship at the Fountain of Life Church. He has nine siblings.

Is your father fulfilled?

Yes, he is. His fulfillment could be seen in the testimonies of members and the growth of the church. People thought the death of my mother was the end of the church, but God has not forsaken him. I thank God for my father’s life.

What would you like to change about your father?

I love him the way he is. My father is the best thing that has happened to me.

Does he have a favourite colour?

He doesn’t have a favourite colour, but he doesn’t like black. He is fashionable. Before people started using ankara, he has been wearing ankara shirts.

What is his favourite food?

He likes African food a lot and vegetables. There is no day he doesn’t take one of these – garri, amala, fufu or pounded yam. He likes tea too, but he doesn’t really like rice. He behaves more like a Hausa man than a Yoruba man. He grew up in the North, Kaduna precisely.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has approved the appointment of some prominent residents of the state to serve on the boards of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, owned jointly by governments of the South-West states.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Yinka Oyebode, in Ado Ekiti on Sunday stated that “the nominees include High Chief Jide Awe, immediate-past state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, who is to serve as a director on the board of Nigerite Limited.”

Oyebode listed others as Chief Dele Okeya, member, Odu’a Investment Limited; Chief Ropo Adesanya, Chairman, Wemabod Estate limited; and Chief Ronke Okunsanya, member of board, Western Hotels Limited.

Others are Amire Kolade, member, Glanvill Enthoven Insurance Brokers Limited; and Mrs Funke Olugboji, member, Lagos Airport Hotel Limited.

Oyebode stated that the appointments would take immediate effect.
