Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, on Wednesday, called for an end to the violence that has trailed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa. Adeboye added his voice to the calls for an end to the violence via his verified Twitter handle. He said, “Please shun Violence, its dividends last a lifetime. Let us all embrace peace and remember that regardless of our race, colour or language, we are all of God.” Nigerians and foreigners in South Africa have been the targets of attacks since a taxi driver, was killed in Pretoria last week by a suspected drug dealer. In reprisal attacks, Nigerians have been attacked South African-owned businesses in the country. See tweet here:https://www.jalabase.com/news/xenophobia-shun-violence-adeboye-preaches/

Dr. Orji Kalu, Chief Whip of the ninth Senate, has condemned the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, describing it as ill-conceived, disheartening and wicked. In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by Mr. Kunle Oyekunle of Orji Kalu Media Office, the former governor of Abia State questioned the essence of the renewed attacks on Nigerians. “The gruesome killings, looting, arson of property belonging to Nigerians and attack of Nigerian Embassy in South Africa is ill-conceived, disheartening and wicked. “How can any sensible person attack and burn a fellow human being just because he or she has a feeling to do so? “Those mindless criminals who attacked and prevented law-abiding Nigerians to freely conduct their businesses must be made to pay for their crimes. “Arresting them is not enough,’’ he stressed. While emphasising that South Africans lived and carried out their businesses peacefully in Nigeria, Kalu said there would be no reason to allow them to operate further if South African government failed to protect the lives of Nigerians. “If the South African government fails to do more to protect the lives of Nigerians, there should be no reason to allow them to operate freely in Nigeria. “All their enterprises deserve to be closed down including MTN, DSTV, Shoprite among others. “In the spirit of brotherhood, we have supported them. Our doors have always been open, but it’s time to retaliate by shutting our doors,” he said The Senate Chief Whip, however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for dispatching a special envoy to the South African government. He urged the Federal Government to hasten the intervention process and institute stiffer measures against South Africa over the endless xenophobic attacks. Meanwhile, Mr Adetola Olubajo, President, Nigeria Union South Africa, said on Monday that the attacks began on Sunday morning in Jeppestown area of Johannesburg, when a building was set ablaze by an angry mob. “The mob also looted several shops that were around the vicinity suspected to be owned by foreign nationals. “But the police later dispersed the mob and made some arrests. “Late in the evening of Sunday, September 1, a group of violent locals, suspected to be Zulu hostel dwellers besieged Jules Street in Malvern, Johannesburg, looted and burnt shops and businesses with Nigerians being the most victims. The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that over 70 shops and businesses were destroyed, looted and burnt on Monday night in Malvern area of Johannesburg. cc mynd44, oam4j source: https://www.jalabase.com/news/xenophobia-south-african-businesses-shouldnt-operate-further-in-nigeria-kalu/ |

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday said xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa was a blot on common history of both countries. Atiku, in a statement he issued in Abuja, described the attack as the most disturbing development at the turn of the century. According to him, Nigerians who live in the Republic of South Africa have consistently been victims of xenophobic, violent attacks. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 elections said it was unfortunate that both Nigeria and South Africa had not done enough to reduce the spate of those attacks. He advised both countries to explore available diplomatic measures as soon as possible to address the situation, while urging citizens of both countries to see themselves as one. “Both Nigeria and South Africa share a history of brotherhood and camaraderie at different times in our difficult times and it is very important that we do not allow this ugly development to cause a blot in our shared history. “While I recommend that both countries press all available diplomatic buttons as fast as possible, it is important to impress on citizens from both sides to see ourselves as brothers and never as adversaries. “True, the days of apartheid in South Africa and military rule in Nigeria are far behind us, we still both have a common enemy and that is in expanding the space for economic prosperity to a large range of our peoples. “The new battle is economic in nature and it will be delusional for both Nigeria and South Africa to think that it is a battle we can win in isolation of each other. “Neither and never can victory in the economic battle come by the way of turning daggers at each other,” he warned. Atiku called on Nigerian mission in South Africa to open its doors wide for all humanitarian support that could be required of them from Nigerian victims of these attacks. “Also, it will be a good take-off ground for solution to this problem for the South African government to cause a probe into the attacks and bring all perpetrators to book,” he said. cc mynd44, oam4j source: https://www.jalabase.com/news/xenophobic-attacks-a-blot-on-nigerian-south-african-history-atiku/

The Federal Government has asked Nigerians to stop attacking South African businesses, saying investors and workers in the companies are Nigerians. The Special Adviser to the Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described as disturbing reports that angry Nigerians had started attacking South African companies in Nigeria. He said targeting South African companies in Nigeria for attack was akin to cutting off ones nose to spite the face because the investors in such companies, especially MTN and Shoprite, are Nigerians. Mohammed said the majority of the workers in the South African companies operating in Nigeria were also Nigerians, meaning that Nigerian workers would be the hardest hit if the companies were forced to shut down. He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government was already taking measures to put an end to persistent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. ‘ ‘President Muhammadu Buhari has dispatched a Special Envoy to convey to his South African counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa, his concerns and also interact with his South African counterpart on the situation. ”Also, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, acting on the instruction of Mr. President, has summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria to get a brief on the situation; express Nigeria’s displeasure over the treatment of her citizens; and secure assurance of the safety of their lives and property,” the minister said. cc oam4j, mynd44 source: https://www.jalabase.com/news/xenophobia-stop-attacking-shoprite-mtn-others-fg-tells-nigerians/
