The Nigeria Labour Congress says it will embark on a nationwide mobilisation of Nigerian workers to protest the Federal Government’s delay in implementing a new national minimum wage of N30,000.

It also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate allegations of diversion of the bailout fund, Paris Club refund, as well as all budget support releases to the states.

But the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, expressed confidence the NLC would not embarrass the government.

The NLC in the communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting in Abuja said it had directed that the protest should hold in all state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on January 8, 2019.

It also said all industrial unions and state councils had been directed to fully mobilise workers and other labour unions the protest.

The communiqué signed by the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, and General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Eson, stated that NEC also condemned the alleged violation of the fundamental human rights and freedom of association of workers by the Ogun State Government.

It accused the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, of illegal proscription of trade union rights in the Tai Solarin College of Education, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

President Muhammadu Buhari may have approved a six-month tenure extension for the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris,

But the opposition political parties, under the aegis of the Coalition of United Political Parties, are threatening to drag President Muhammadu Buhari before the court over the plannedtenure extension.

The President was said to have agreed in principle to grant the IG additional six months in office to enable him to coordinate and supervise the forthcoming general elections in the country.

Officially, Idris is due to retire from the Nigeria Police Force on January 3, 2019, having put in the mandatory 35 years in service. But he was said to have lobbied some senior Presidency functionaries, who, in turn, got Buhari to extend the IG’s tenure.

A top source, who confirmed the development to one of our correspondents in Abuja on Saturday, explained that the IG might get the official confirmation of the tenure extension “any moment from now.”

He said, “It is a done deal; the IG’s tenure has already been extended because the Presidency has confidence in him. He would get the official confirmation any moment from now; that is if he hasn’t received it already.

“Extending the IG’s tenure is not unexpected. The other service chiefs had their tenure extended by a year. So, giving Idris the same privilege is nothing out of the ordinary.”

Meanwhile, the planned extension of tenure, the CUPP claimed, would only afford the police boss the opportunity to do the President’s bidding and work for the ruling All Progressives Congress in the general elections.

They have therefore resolved to resist the move, claiming the nation’s constitution does not make any provision for tenure extension.

The first national spokesperson for the CUPP, Imo Ugochinyere, in an interview on Friday, said the opposition parties were shifting their attention to the leadership of the force following Buhari’s decision not to sign the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill and the inability of federal lawmakers to override his veto.

He said, “We are insisting that the Inspector-General of Police, whose tenure is expiring in January, must leave the office.

“So, we are demanding that the President should not extend his tenure because there is no such provision in the constitution. A former police officer cannot be an Inspector-General of Police. We will be filing an action in court to ensure that he leaves office in January.”

Also, the Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution has kicked against the alleged tenure elongation, noting that Idris had so far “demonstrated lack of capacity and inability to effectively police Nigeria as the IG.”

The CDNDC Coordinator, Dare Atoye, argued that wanton killings and criminality had increased under Idris leadership of the police, adding that there were more competent officers in the NPF that could do the job better.

He said, “The only good thing that can happen to the Nigeria police is for the government of President Buhari to look for a competent replacement; somebody who has the discipline and the character to lead the force. I believe many Nigerians would agree with me that the wanton killings in the country and the lack of training without equipment have been aggravated under his leadership.”

Appraising the alleged reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, the activist observed that no reform had taken place, noting that the impunity being carried out by the squad was merely suppressed.

The robbery escapade of a native doctor, who dressed in Nigerian Army camouflage to snatch cars, has reached the end of the road following his arrest by the police.

The suspect, Abdullahi Mudi, was apprehended along with his accomplice, Christopher Illia, at different locations in Abuja.

Our correspondent learnt that one of the operational strategies of the two-man gang was to dress in army uniform, pose as passengers by hailing a cab and strike with toy guns after they had entered the cab.

It was gathered that the suspects had recently stolen three cars in the Federal Capital Territory and sold them in Kogi State.

Luck ran out on them a few weeks ago when Illia accosted a man along the road in the Garki area of Abuja and dispossessed him of N450,000 and two phones.

The victim had reportedly parked by the roadside to urinate when Illia attacked him.

Illia, who could not drive, was said to have fled with the man’s car key and taken it to Mubi’s house, where it was later recovered by the police.

A manhunt was launched for Illia by operatives of Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team after the man reported the incident.

Illia, our correspondent learnt, was tracked down through one of the phones he allegedly collected from the man. He subsequently led detectives to arrest Mudi.

Speaking to City Round during the week, 25-year-old Mudi said he was introduced to robbery in 2012 by a friend, who assured him that he would make more money in the act than working as a native doctor.

He said, “I am a native doctor and I treat people of stroke, broken bones and other illnesses. I was living in Lokoja, Kogi State until 2012 when one of my friends in Lagos State introduced me to carjacking. He said the ‘business’ would fetch me more money than treating people.

“He taught me how to drive and we started removing people’s cars at parks. My friend had a master key which we used to steal cars at nightclubs. I was arrested during one of our operations and charged to court. I spent four years in prison before I was released on bail. I relocated to Abuja in 2016 and started treating people again.”

He said Illia came to him for treatment of gonorrhoea early this year and in the course of their chats, they came up with the idea of carjacking.

“Illia then suggested that we should get military uniform. We wore the uniform to bus stops at night. We flagged down any neat cab and after we entered, we would point toy guns at the driver and force him to stop the vehicle. We would collect his money and drive off. We normally received between N120,000 and N150,000 for each vehicle we sold,” he added.

Illia explained that he went into robbery after he lost his security work at a Federal ministry in Abuja.

He confessed to have stolen several phones, adding that it was Mudi who introduced him to carjacking.

He said, “I was a security guard. I became desperate after I lost my job and I started robbing people of their phones. I usually went out very early in the morning. I attacked people whose vehicles broke down or who were working alone. I dispossessed them of their valuables including phones and money. I later met Mudi, who introduced me to carjacking. We carjacked three vehicles together and Mudi got a buyer for the cars.

“Sometime in November, I sighted a man urinating along the road in the Garki area around 5am while his car was parcked by the roadside. I approached him and pointed a toy gun at him. I found N450,000 and two phones in his vehicle and took them away.”

Illia said he fled with the man’s car key for fear that he might chase him, adding that he sold the two phones for N10,000.

The 30-year-old native of Lokoja claimed that he took the car key to Mudi and gave him N5,000 to help him prepare a charm that would discourage the man from going after him.

He added, “I then went on a spending spree. I bought clothes for my girlfriend and furnished my house with part of the money. It was somebody I sold one of the phones to who led the police to arrest me and I took the police to Mudi’s house.”

Liverpool passed another stringent test of their Premier League title credentials as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk gave them a 2-0 victory at Wolverhampton on Friday that guarantees top spot at Christmas.

Salah’s 11th goal of the season was a classy one and helped subdue a dangerous Wolves side who had made a lively start.

The home side continued to push Jurgen Klopp’s side hard but their resistance was finally broken with 22 minutes remaining as Van Dijk capped a superb performance with a goal that cemented his side’s position at the top of the table with 48 points.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said: “The first goal was brilliant, it was cool. And the second goal – yes, well done. I’m completely happy with the result and it is big for us.

“We will be training on Christmas morning so it is like every other day. It is an outstanding number (of points), it is absolutely cool.”

While Liverpool have struggled at times to match the attacking potency of Manchester City, who they face on January 3, their added defensive steel has made them serious contenders for their first title of the Premier League era.

In the first half at a wet, windy Molineux they showed signs that some of the swagger that marked them out as the league’s great entertainers last season is returning.

Salah linked up impressively with Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino in attack and Klopp’s side might have added to their tally earlier than they did.

Then, when Wolves managed to blunt Liverpool’s attacking threat, their defence clicked into gear to silence a dangerous frontline with Van Dijk in outstanding form at the heart of Klopp’s back four.

Klopp’s men endured a nervous opening when, in the fourth minute, Fabinho’s lapse in concentration saw his pass intercepted by Joao Moutinho. Moutinho fed Adama Traore but he curled a shot narrowly wide.

Traore threatened again moments later when he was supplied by the solid link-up play of Raul Jimenez before again shooting just off target.

Early chances were scarce for the visitors and when one arrived, with James Milner’s corner dropping kindly for Van Dijk, the Dutchman’s shot was charged down by Matt Doherty.

A fine move from Wolves almost brought the opening goal when Conor Coady’s superb pass and Doherty’s neat touch release Romain Saiss, whose shot was well saved by Alisson after it had taken a deflection off Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool had been on the back foot but there was no denying the quality of their opening goal, scored by Salah on 18 minutes.

Fabinho was the architect with a driving run and a neat one-two with Sadio Mane before he crossed for Salah to prod home deftly with his outside of his left foot.

The Reds pushed for a second and Rui Patricio saved well from James Milner but there were chances for Wolves, too, with Alisson forced to save from Jonny Castro Otto.

Ugochinyere unveiled reasons for the launch of Code 20, a strategy aimed at checkmating incidences of electoral manipulation in 2019. Excerpts! By Dirisu Yakubu You have made a number of agitations and calls recently pointing to concerns about how the elections are going to look like in 2019.

Are you scared of losing?

Ugochinyere: No politician is scared of losing in the general election. Every genuine democrat must know that in politics, there can be only one winner at a time. Once you have that feeling, once you have that understanding, there would be no need to nurse any fear. I think the problem lies with people not wanting to play by the rules. As long as the rules of the game are set right, if you lose, you lose in a free and fair atmosphere. So, you are bound to accept the outcome of the process. Ikenga Ugochinyere But if before you start the process, people are already changing the goal posts in the middle of the game, then, there is a problem. So the question is, is it because you are afraid of losing that you would not complain? So the ruling government is actually the one that is scared of losing the election and are no longer operating within the ambit of the law that regulates the process. That is why we witness ballot box snatching, police harassment, police connivance with established powers to orchestrate outcomes. If the ruling government is not scared of losing why are they in such a panic mode that is increasing the tension in the land? So I can tell you categorically that in the game of politics there can only be one winner at a time and that once the rules of engagement are spelt out and followed, the loser is always compelled to accept the outcome of the process, like the PDP conceded in 2015. The All Progressives Congress, APC believe President Buhari cannot lose this election but they should allow us go through the process of a free and fair election but they would not do so. The opposition is now saying instead of resorting to violence, arms carrying and so on, we will use the available options within the ambit of the law to draw attention and increase public pressure so that the rampaging army of election violence promoters in APC can have a rethink and know that this is not about PDP or APC or the opposition but about generations yet unborn, and that the foundation we set up today will be the foundation upon which those generations will operate. So if we set up a foundation of election violence like we have in Congo, in Gabon, in Burundi, that is what we are going to inherit. It is going to be the rule of the mighty. So that is why we are raising the alarm within the ambit of the law. That is why we have launched Code 20, which is to mobilize our people not for violence but to apprehend, quench and stop the violence promoters that are in the APC, and not to allow them overrun us because if you are saying the opposition should go to sleep let them shoot their way through the backdoor, then there is no need having a democracy. We are going to train our people to act within the ambit of the law with enough physical power to apprehend anybody seen to be committing offence in their presence as spelt out by Section 20 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA. Are you not bothered about the timing for training people for this and aren’t you concerned that this could be a call to anarchy? Are you saying the framers of the ACJA and the 1999 constitution that gave room for people to exercise their policing right of arrest without warrant, are anarchists? They are not anarchists. The Constitution and the drafters know that the police may not have the manpower to be every where, they also know that in the middle of the night when armed robbers or criminals knock on your door that the police may not be there. That is why the law empowers us to protect ourselves. If in your presence somebody is committing an offence, do the needful. The law did not say arrest him and keep him in your backyard, but instead apprehend him and take him to the nearest police station. One of the offences that the Electoral Act forbids under section 90 and 91 is buying and selling of votes. Anybody who buys or sells votes is for the purpose of changing the will of the person so the law has called it an offence with the maximum punishment of about two or three years. So if our men see anyone sharing money at a polling unit, we are saying grab the money, grab the man and deliver him to the nearest police station. How do you now call that anarchy? Plans are underway to increase the earnings of men and officers of the Nigerian Police Force. Don’t you think this is being done now as an incentive for them to work in favour of the ruling party? First of all, the increment has not taken effect. If the President thinks police officers who have been subjected to harsh working conditions, will shield and support the government to continue it’s reign of impunity, he is mistaken. In any case, of what importance is the increment if it does not affect purchasing power positively and significantly? Lets talk about CUPP, few minutes before the memorandum of understanding was signed, recall that the chieftain of the coalition, Chief Olu Falae pleaded that the end point was not just to rally around a sole candidate that will oust President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 but also to cut across board, across all elective offices. The elections in Ekiti and Osun states saw the APC carrying the day even after signing the MOU, so people are curious to know what the CUPP will be doing differently in 2019. When we were signing that MOU, it was clear, what Olu Falae said was just a suggestion because at the time he was saying that, the decision had been concluded that most political parties would prefer to retain their flags at different states in governorship, Senate and House of Representatives. They were prepared to sacrifice their Presidential ambition because they thought if the country can be fixed, it has to start from the top. Now that you have adopted Atiku as your consensus Presidential candidate, what will you say to other Presidential candidates within the coalition who might want to disagree with the move? I want to make this categorically clear that no political system is perfect anywhere in the world. This is the biggest coalition but do not expect hundred percent compliance. At every stage, we are enjoying a majority and if we are enjoying a majority support at every stage, that is what matters. I am telling you now that majority of the members of the coalition are united and are solidly behind Atiku who will go on to inflict defeat on President Buhari in 2019.

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday raised the alarm that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would affect its preparations for the 2019 elections.

ASUU, had on November 5, 2018 begun an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to implement three areas in the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union on September 14, 2017.

The lecturers’ grouse with the Federal Government included its failure to carry out the Forensic Audit of the earned academic allowances of the lecturers since 2017 and the payment of N20bn out of an agreed N220bn annually and underfunding of the public universities.

Briefing journalists before ASUU started the ongoing strike on November 5, its National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said all entreaties made to the Federal Government to honour the agreement with the union fell on deaf ears and they had no alternative but to begin the strike.

Ogunyemi alleged that the government was not interested in public universities as the children of the top politicians and rich men in the society patronise private universities at the detriment of public institutions.

Both sides have met four times without resolving the crisis, thus forcing students of public universities, who constitute the majority of INEC ad hoc staff during elections, to stay at home.

On Thursday, a National Commissioner for INEC and Chairman of its Information and other Education Committee, Festus Okoye, expressed concerns about the effect of the ASUU strike on the 2019 elections during the opening of a one-day seminar on media gender sensitive reporting.

The event, which was organised by INEC, was supported by the United Nations Women and the Canadian Government.

The commission said that it would deploy over one million ad hoc staff made up of lecturers in federal tertiary institutions, members of the National Youth Service Corps and students of federal tertiary institutions in the elections.

The categories of ad hoc staff to be used during next year’s elections would serve as Returning Officers, Collation Officers, Supervisory Presiding Officers, and Assistant Presiding Officers.

But Okoye expressed fear that the elections could be impacted negatively if the strike was not urgently called off.

He said, “It is next to impossibility for members of the NYSC to provide all the ad hoc staff needs and requirements of the commission, and over 70 per cent of the ad hoc staff requirement in some states of the federation are drawn from students of federal tertiary institutions.

“Hence, the lingering strike by ASUU will no doubt have serious impact on the preparations for the conduct of the 2019 elections. We therefore call on ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria to quickly and genuinely resolve the lingering impasse that has led to uncertainty in the education sector.

“The national interest, the interest of our democracy and the reputation of Nigeria demand the immediate resolution of the issues that led to the strike and we so urge.

“It is important that students in federal tertiary institutions should and must be in school at least a month before the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections. They are a critical resource and their absence will have adverse effects on the ad hoc requirements of INEC.”

According to him, INEC believes in the doctrine of not leaving any segment of the Nigerian society behind.

Okoye said the workshop was part of the deliberate policies of the commission aimed at encouraging and underpinning the equitable participation of all segments of the society in elections and providing a level playing field for all stakeholders in all stages of the electoral process.

“Therefore, any form of misrepresentation, mistake or mischief in reporting electoral matters may lead to uncertainty, constitutional crisis, and de-marketing of INEC,”he stressed.

The Chairman, Outreach and Partnership Committee in INEC, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, said the seminar was organised to brainstorm on new ways to use the media to promote gender equality in the electoral process.

He said INEC understood the indisputable role of the media in setting and resetting the mindset of electorate to make the 2019 elections more gender sensitive.

Ogunmola said that beyond the freedom to vote and adherence to electoral laws, a free and fair election was also about a participatory process where voters were well informed to make right choices.

He added that the media would serve this role through objective and impartial reporting of political events which help to shape public opinion and deepen democracy.

Ogunmola urged the media to plan content that would support gender in their reportage of the electoral process to ensure inclusiveness.

The representative of UN Women, Lansana Wonneh, said when politics was inclusive and allowed women participation, the results would be better.

Nigeria, he said, “leads Africa in almost everything,” except in terms of female participation in governance and politics where Nigeria is among countries with the lowest number.

“We are several weeks away from the general elections and this seminar could not be more appropriate. At UN Women, we are working with INEC to make sure that there are efforts in making elections free and fair and inclusive, especially gender inclusive,” Wonneh said.

Direct your plea to FG, ASUU tells commission

But commenting on the fear raised by INEC, ASUU president said the commission should direct its plea to the Federal Government.

Ogunyemi, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said that the electoral body should take it complaints to the Federal Government, as the ongoing strike was not about the elections.

He said students and other members of the university community were free to partake in elections, as they were not told to boycott them.

He said, “ASUU did not go on strike because of INEC, if the Federal Government does what is expected of it today, the strike will be over. To link ASUU strike with election; we have no basis to listen to INEC because we don’t have any problem with them. Students are free citizens and they can be drawn from anywhere, we never told them to boycott elections.

“So, our strike is not targeted at INEC; our strike is aimed at revamping the educational system, particularly university education, so they can see quality students and staff to draw from for the elections.

“If you don’t restore the integrity of the university system, in another few years, even our students will be a liability to INEC. Instead, they should plead with the Federal Government to address the grievances of academics so we can see quality staff to support their work. If they think the university system is useful, INEC should go to the Federal Government and tell them to address the issues, because that is when they will continue to see quality scholars from the system.

“If we adulterate the system as the Federal Government is trying to encourage us to do, in another few years we will not be proud of our universities anymore and we don’t want that to happen, that is why we have to plead with INEC not to link ASUU with election because we are not striking against INEC,” Ogunyemi said.

FG, APC not ready for elections – PDP

However, the Peoples Democratic party said the threat might fit into the alleged plan by the Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress not to conduct elections in 2019.

It added that the Federal Government believed that it would be defeated if elections were conducted and therefore was planning secretly not to have any election.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, stated this while reacting to the fears raised by the electoral body.

He said, “We have been saying it and we will continue to say it, the Federal Government and the APC, in connivance with INEC are planning to sabotage the elections.

“But whether they like it or not, Nigerians in their millions will vote and there will be a genuine change in this country come 2019. They (the government) should listen to the cry of these lecturers and fulfil all contractual agreements with them.

“We will not allow anyone under whatever guise, to sabotage the general elections.”

INEC is in a tight situation, election under threat – SDP

Also, the Social Democratic Party said the statement credited to INEC was an indication that the electoral body was in a tight situation and the general elections under threat.

It therefore called on the Federal Government to quickly rise up to the situation by resolving the problem it had with members of ASUU.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Alfa Mohammed, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents.

Mohammed said, “Since INEC has said this, it means the commission is in a very tight situation. It also means that the election is under threat.

“The right thing for a responsible government to do at this time is to quickly resolve the problem it has with ASUU.

“The government has no option but to resolve it immediately. We cannot afford to allow this election to be in jeopardy.

“We are therefore calling on the Federal Government to listen to the voice of INEC and quickly do the needful.”

We’re close to signing agreement with ASUU – FG

But the Federal Ministry of Education has revealed that its negotiation team and ASUU are close to signing an agreement and resolving the ongoing strike by the university lecturers.

The Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr Ben Goong, stated this on Thursday during a chat, noting that students would hopefully return to their universities as soon as the Yuletide season was over.

“The Federal Government and the ASUU are close to signing an agreement. I can assure you that the strike will soon be over. As soon as the Yuletide is gone, we will have our children return to the universities and our lecturers return to their classrooms,” Goong said.

Hauling a festively colored bag, Obama, 57, made a surprise visit to Children’s National hospital in Washington to distribute gifts — remote-control cars, glitter nail polish, Hot Wheels and jigsaw puzzles — to kids.

“My reindeer were stuck in some snow and I just wanted to make sure I made the trip and had the chance to see all of you guys, said Obama in the hospital’s playroom.

The not-so-secret Santa visited with young patients and their families. He even took some selfies for fans. Thrilled hospital staff and visitors immediately began regaling Obama with Christmas carols and cheering, reported Mashable.

“Thank you Barack Obama for making our patients’ day so much brighter,” tweeted the hospital. “Your surprise warmed our hallways and put smiles on everyone’s faces!”

The visit conspicuously comes five days after Texas judge Reed O’Connor ruled that the individual mandate for the Affordable Care Act — better known as Obamacare — was unconstitutional.

But before leaving, the President reportedly recorded a video message to be played on the hospital’s internal TV system for those who missed his visit.

“Merry Christmas and happy holidays to the extraordinary kids, families and staff at Children’s National,” tweeted Obama after his departure. “And thanks for humoring me as your stand-in Santa.”

I had a lovely childhood, although I was quite shielded while growing up. I am the last born of five children and my childhood was mostly spent with family, playing with my numerous cousins, going to school, church and other such places.

Ever since I was eight years old, I wanted to be an actor and a musician. I was always the one who would put together elaborate plays and musicals for Christmas, Easter and New Year. I’d automatically declare myself creative director and make my siblings and cousins take part. I would decide who would play what roles. Everyone got used to it and it became part of our family tradition.

Education

For my post-elementary education, I attended Queens College, Lagos. Afterwards, I went to the University of Lancaster, UK, where I studied Marketing.

Career

I started my career as a fashion photographer. Because of this, I had made friends with a lot of personalities in the music industry. So, when I finally decided to go for it, I was able to talk to certain industry experts such as Banky W, Don Jazzy, among others who were gracious enough to give me advice and render help when necessary.

My first song, I know what you like, was produced by Mavin Records producer, Baby Fresh. They never charged me a single penny for this record and I am grateful to this day.

Parents’ reaction

At first, my parents did not support my entertainment career. In their time, entertainment was not particularly the most lucrative of careers; so, they approached it with this mindset. They also felt since I graduated with a good grade (2:1), I could get any job with any company I wanted. But I was persistent and when they saw that this was truly my passion, they gave me their blessing. They are now my biggest supporters.

Photography

I’ve always loved taking pictures, being in front of the camera and behind it. My love for photography grew extensively when I was in the university. I remember spending £500 on my first semi-pro camera. That was a huge amount for a student and I remember my friends looked at me like I was crazy.

One of my highlights as a photographer was working on D’banj’s reality show, Koko Mansion. I was still in London then and they brought me to Nigeria to do their photo shoot. This brought me instant stardom and popularity as a photographer.

Acting

My first role was in a series titled Gidi Culture. It was my first audition and I was able to bag the lead role. That really motivated me and gave me the assurance that I had a real shot at becoming an actor.

My big break as an actor came when I was cast to play the lead role in an African Magic production titled, What Lies Untold.

Over the years, I’ve been in numerous movies, including, King of Boys, Lara and the Beat, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, June, It’s her Day, 5th Floor and many more, including a good number of TV shows and web series.

One of the toughest roles I’ve had was playing the younger version of Sola Sobowale in the movie, King of Boys. I made the decision to put on weight for the role and I added roughly 15kg. I also strained and lost my voice on purpose to try to attain the husky tone that Sola has. I spent over two months doing nothing else but studying Sola Sobowale. I refused other work so I wouldn’t have to go out of character and stay focused. The audience and industry’s reaction to my portrayal of that role makes all that work one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done as it has brought me critical acclaim.

Challenges

I started my career as photographer and because of that, it was quite a challenge getting people to take me seriously as an artiste and as an actor. At some point, I began to wish I had never started with photography at all, because then I wouldn’t have to fight the tough battle of gaining acceptance. Some OAPs simply wouldn’t play my music because they didn’t take me seriously. It took a lot of hard work, persistence and determination before I was finally accepted in the industry. There were times that I wanted to give up but I’m exceedingly happy I didn’t.

Breakthrough

Everything changed for me musically when I released the single, Hey Boy. The response to it was phenomenal. It made the music industry take serious notice of me and it won me a dedicated fan base.

Lessons

I have learnt that persistence and consistency are key in everything you do. If you keep at your purpose diligently whether or not it seems to be going well or not, with time, the universe will align in your favour.

Current projects

I have new music coming out next year. I have new films and TV shows coming out as well. I’ve shot a project called MMM (Men, Money and Marriage) slated to air in January 2019. I’ve also shot a series titled, Mascara, directed by Walt ‘Banger’ Taylor which commences very soon and I will soon start work on a new film called Foreigner’s God.

Balance

To be honest, this is quite difficult because it leaves me with little time for anything else and it’s quite important to me to live a balanced life filled with love and laughter, shared with loved ones, both family and friends.

I don’t want to always be working all the time; but at the same time, this is what I prayed for. And now that it’s here, I can’t complain.

Role models

My biggest role model is my mother. She is the kindest, most hard-working and God-fearing person I know, and these are three traits that I try to embody.

For music, it’s Beyoncé; her work ethic and dedication to her craft is undeniable.

In acting, it’s Meryl Streep and Viola Davis; their level of talent inspires me.

Hobbies

I love to watch TV shows. I also love theme parks; I’m like a kid in a candy store in them. If you want to make me happy, take me to a place like Disney World. I love to spend time with my family and friends.

I also love swimming or just relaxing in the water.

Fashion

Style to me is self expression. How you look is the first thing people see and it’s a way of telling people a bit of who you are without using words.

I would describe my sense of style as chic and timeless. I rarely follow trends. I just wear what I like, whether it’s in style or not. I can dress like a tomboy today and like a power woman tomorrow.

Employees at a courthouse in India had a fright on Friday after a young leopard was spotted prowling around the building, authorities said.

“Seeing the leopard the court staff ran out of the room and locked it from outside and informed us,” G.A. Zala, a forestry official in the western state of Gujarat, told AFP.

With an excited crowd gathering outside the court in the town of Chotila, the big cat was eventually found after three and a half hours hiding under a cupboard.

The animal, thought to be around two to three years old, was tranquilised and was due to be released in a forested area.

India’s environment ministry said in August that 1,144 people were killed between April 2014 and May 2017 by wild animals — an average of more than one a day.

There are an estimated 12,000-14,000 leopards in India, which are frequently killed when they stray into villages. Officials say one is killed on average every day.

Experts say the number of incidents is on the rise due to shrinking forest habitats and urban expansion.

Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been voted BBC African Footballer of the Year for the second time in a row.

The 26-year-old beat Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Thomas Partey to the prize.

The Premier League’s player of the year scored 44 goals in 52 games for Liverpool last season.

“It’s a great feeling to win again. I’m happy and I would like to win it also next year!” said Salah.

As well as inspiring his club to the Champions League final, Salah scored twice for Egypt at this year’s World Cup, having netted both goals in the match which took his country to the tournament for the first time since 1990.

“There have been many good moments in 2018,” he added. “The game against Roma at Anfield [Champions League semi-final first leg] was unbelievable. I’m scoring goals and helping the team to get the points to be top of the league. That’s always a great feeling.”

Salah said his aim for 2019 is “to win something with the club so everyone is excited”.

Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho, has ordered his players to show up for training on Christmas day at 4pm, ahead of their match against Huddersfield on Boxing Day.
According to Sun UK, the players had been hoping to spend time with their families and loved ones on Christmas day with an earlier training time, which will leave the evening free for them.
Instead, a source close to the football club revealed that the team would train on Christmas Day at Carrington before going to their hotel, where they will spend the night and eat together.

Sun UK quoted the source as saying, “Under Sir Alex, the players used to train first thing on Christmas Day and then go home and spend time with their family and enjoy a festive dinner.
“But this year, there’s not going to be much fun for them.

An apostrophe performs several functions in English language. It can show possession, as we have in This is the tailor’s house, telling us whose house it is. Often, when a noun is singular, the apostrophe comes before the s (tailor’s); but when it is plural, it comes after it, as we have in The tailors’ cars are wrongly parked. Another example is, “They have replaced the boys’ chairs.”

One other major function of an apostrophe is that it shows that letters and numbers have been omitted in certain expressions. This is what obtains in isn’t, don’t and didn’t. Some of the terms usually so contracted are, however, too intriguing to handle for many of us. We are focusing on such today.

Of all the five, it is only one that is correct. That is the last: I’m 30 years old. In the clause, the use of the apostrophe between I and am shows that a letter has been omitted; that omitted item is the a before m in am. Unfortunately, this is often confused with Am, when people say Am here. This is a wrong expression that you should shun whether in conventional writing or social media conversation.

Using Am instead of ‘I’m’ implies that you do not understand the principle behind the shortening of the original expression. In Am, you are not properly indicating the letter omitted. It is not I that is omitted, it is the a in am. So, the apostrophe is used to bring I and m together:

Between his and he’s

Using his and he’s can also be problematic. The first – his – is a pronoun, a possessive pronoun that does not require an apostrophe, as we rightly have in This is his car, meaning the car belongs to him and not to any other person. You need not add any other item to this, just as you do not add an apostrophe to her, their, its and my. Or would you feel comfortable saying or writing, This is her’s house?

On the other hand, he’s comes with an apostrophe because there is an omission. The i before s (is) is deliberately thrown out. To indicate this, an apostrophe is needed:

Nigerian singer and rapper Chukie Edozien, popularly referred to as Lynxx, has said it is not a sin to drink alcohol as the 1st miracle Jesus performed in the Bible had to do with transforming water into an alcoholic drink.
The rapper had reportedly been seen smoking at social functions but he had never addressed the issue.
While refusing to comment on reports of him smoking, he told Sunday Scoop:
“It is not a sin to drink (alcohol). What was Jesus’ first miracle in the Bible? He turned water to wine. I still hang out with my old friends in the entertainment industry.”


He argued that despite being a born-again Christian, he wasn’t doing gospel music.
He said,
“I am born-again, but I am not doing gospel music and I don’t do secular music again too. I cannot call myself a minister of God just because I performed at a gospel show. Lower your expectations. Stop expecting your partner to be perfect. Allow him or her be human. 8. Leave it in the Past

Let it be in the past, all your previous fights and arguments, let them go with the past. Let them die with time, don’t resuscitate them whenever you are a new fight or a similar fight. Let bygones be bygones.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot legally double as the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

The court made the declaration on Thursday while giving judgment in a suit filed last year by a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).

Agbakoba had, in the suit, urged the court to restrain Buhari from continuing to hold the office of the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

The SAN had contended that Section 138 of the 1999 Constitution forbids the President from “holding any other executive office or paid employment.”

In a statement on Friday by his office, Agbakoba said the court in deciding the case held that Buhari had not violated Section 138, since he is not directly in charge of the day-to-day running of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

The court, according to the statement, said there would have been a violation if Buhari had not appointed someone else — Dr. Ibe Kachikwu — to oversee the day-to-day running of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

The court explained that the phrase “hold” in Section 138 of the constitution “meant to preside, act, to possess, occupy or conduct the actual day to day running of the office.”

“Merely proclaiming/announcing that he (the President) was the Minister of Petroleum is not enough to conclude that he holds the office of minister,” the court reportedly declared.

In the suit, Agbakoba had said as a legal practitioner with 40 years’ experience and having checked the Constitution, he was convinced that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot legally hold the office of the Minister of Petroleum Resources and thus urged the court to sack him.

He contended that Buhari was not screened for the ministerial job by the Senate, as required by the constitution.

He urged the court to determine “whether, by virtue of Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution, the President can hold the office of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, without confirmation by the Senate of the National Assembly.”

In a 14-paragraph affidavit, which he personally deposed to in support of his suit, Agbakoba explained that the lawsuit was informed by the recent management crisis which engulfed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, on account of disagreements between the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, and the Group Managing Director of the NNPC.

“I verily believe that the governance chaos in the NNPC could not have occurred if the President is not also the Minister of Petroleum Resources.

“I am aware that the NNPC provides up to 90 percent of the revenue accruing to Nigeria. I am worried that the crisis in the NNPC will greatly reduce Nigeria’s revenue-generating capacity and will affect the revenue distributable to federal, state and local governments in Nigeria.

“This will gravely affect development nationwide and drastically impact one and all Nigerians, including those in Anambra State (my state of origin) and Lagos State (my state of residence).

“I looked at Section 138 of the 1999 Constitution and I verily believe it disqualifies the President from holding executive office including that of the Minister of Petroleum, during his tenure of office as President.

“I know that the President did not go through nomination process and confirmation by the Senate, before holding the office of Minister of Petroleum Resources.

“I again looked at Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution and I verily believe it prohibits anybody from holding the office of a Minister of the Federation, without confirmation by the Senate,” Agbakoba had said.

A married pastor has been caught in Anambra after he allegedly raped a 19-year-old student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Emmanuel Nwakaozor, from Adazi Nnukwu in Anambra state allegedly raped the teenager last Friday, October 26, 2018. The incident was reported to a popular Facebook user Queeneth Dominic by the victim and she took it up from there.



How married pastor accused of being a serial rapist was nabbed in Anambra after he allegedly raped 19-year-old student



The victim said the man lured her by pretending he had a business proposal for her. When she got there, he told what the business was all about and it turned out it was shady. He wanted her to seduce men, lure them, and steal from them.

The young lady turned the offer down and Nwakaozor, a father-of-two, allegedly raped her after which he took a photo of her naked body and threatened her with the nude photos. He also cut locks of her hair, wiped her bleeding genitals with a white handkerchief, and cut her finger with a razor to make her bleed. All these, he said, was like an oath to bind them together.

The man was eventually traced using Truecaller and he was reported to police in Neni, Anambra state.
