Fifteen persons lost their lives, while scores were injured in multiple road crashes in Ogun and Anambra states on Monday.

In Ogun State, five persons were confirmed dead, while seven sustained injuries in a crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident occurred around Onigari in the Odeda Local Government Area of the state.

The Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Command, Florence Okpe, confirmed the accident in a statement.

Okpe said the accident occurred around 1pm and involved 40 people consisting of 24 male adults, 13 female adults, two male children and one female child.

According to her, three males and four females were injured in the crash, which involved six vehicles.

The vehicles included a Toyota Corolla with number plate APP 675 BH; a brown Sienna with number plate MUS 932 FE; and a red Mack Iveco truck with number plate JGB 874 XA.

The others, according to Okpe, were a brown Toyota Camry with number plate EW 909 APP, and two white Toyota Hiace buses with number plates ABE 24 LG and APH 582 AAA.

The accident was allegedly caused by speed limit violation on the road, while it was raining, which led to the loss of control of the vehicles.

Okpe said some of the injured victims were rushed to the Victory Hospital, Ogere, while the FRSC patrol team from Oluyole evacuated the other victims to the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The corpses of the dead victims, she noted, had been deposited in the FOS Mortuary, Ipara, adding that the obstruction on the road as a result of the accident had been cleared.


“The sector commander advised motorists to reduce their speed in the rain and around construction areas to prevent avoidable road traffic crashes.”

In Anambra State, no fewer than 10 persons died in a road crash in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

Many others were injured in the accident that involved a truck with number plate XB 238 MBA, which was conveying iron rods, and four other vehicles near the Agulu Lake.
An eyewitness said the truck suffered a brake failure and collided with four other vehicles, which resulted in the death of about 10 persons.

Governor Willie Obiano suspended the state executive council meeting to visit the accident scene.

He promised to foot the bills of the injured victims and ordered barricades to be mounted on the road.

Obiano also visited the St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi Nnukwu, where more than 10 persons, who were critically injured, were admitted.
He directed that speed breakers be constructed on the road to check similar accidents in the future.

The governor sympathised with the families of the deceased and the injured, while directing that the injured victims be taken to the teaching hospital in Amaku, Awka, to receive proper medical attention.

The Supervisor of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi Nnukwu, Rev. Fr. Jerome Okafor, commended Obiano for his prompt response, promising that the injured would be properly taken care of.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the accident.

He said six persons died on the spot, while five were in critical condition when they were rushed to the hospital.
Similarly, an unidentified commercial motorcyclist and two admission seekers into the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, lost their lives on Monday in a crash that occurred on the Ife/Ilesha Expressway.

Eyewitnesses said a bus coming from Ilesha drove against the traffic to avoid bad portions of the road and in the process, ran over the motorcycle conveying the two students.
The students, it was learnt, left the Moro Campus of the OAU some minutes before the accident occurred and were returning to Ile-Ife after sitting for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

While the commercial motorcyclist and one of his passengers died on the spot, the third victim later died at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.
When contacted, the Osun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Peter Oke, said his men were deployed in the scene immediately the crash occurred.
The General Manager, Osun Ambulance Services, Dr Babatunde Olusegun, said the commercial motorcyclist and one of the passengers died on the spot.

He said medics from the agency rushed the second passenger, who sustained serious injuries, to the OAUTH.

The Public Relations Officer, OAU, Abiodun Olanrewaju, while commenting on the accident, urged motorists to always comply with traffic regulations.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Ige, has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Folasade Odoro, said further details about the incident would be released after the conclusion of the investigation.

Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has declared the State Assembly Election for Obokun State Constituency inconclusive.

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye of the All Progressives Congress had challenged the victory of Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Adewumi Adeyemi.

The panel said the petitioner established over voting in four units and cancelled elections in those units.

It subsequently declared the results of the poll inconclusive and ordered rerun in the units.

The panel, however, upheld the election of Mulikat Abiola of APC, who was returned elected as the lawmaker representing Ifelodun State Constituency.

The panel said the petitioner, Hazzim Abioye of PDP failed to prove allegations that the respondent did not resign her appointment in Michael Opara University, Umudike before contesting the poll

Two buses belonging to the Bus Rapid Transport scheme on Monday collided at Asolo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, which shared photos from the accident scene on its official Twitter handle, the collision happened around 7:45 a.m. on Monday.

LASTMA revealed that the accident led to the build-up of traffic around the area. However, as of the time of tweeting, LASTMA revealed that efforts were being made to remove the vehicles from the road.

There was no mention of fatalities in the accident.

LASTMA tweeted, “An accident involving two high capacity buses on the BRT corridor at Asolo. Traffic building up both ways due to onlookers. Recovery already ongoing. Please be patient.”

The Supreme Court has fixed today (Monday) for hearing in an appeal seeking the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari as a candidate in the last presidential election.

It was learnt on Sunday that parties to the case had been served the Supreme Court’s hearing notice for the today’s proceedings.

The case, which was earlier dismissed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, was anchored on the allegation that Buhari submitted false information regarding his academic qualification and certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission as a candidate in the February 23, 2019 poll.

Three Nigerians – Kalu Kalu Agu, Labaran Ismail, Hassy Jyari El-Kunis – filed the appeal, anchored on 12 grounds, before the Supreme Court to challenge the July 12, 2019 judgment of the Court of Appeal.

The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, also raised similar issue in their petition before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

The three appellants had, on their part, commenced their case before the Federal High Court in Abuja in 2018, alleging that Buhari falsely claimed to possess a school certificate he never had.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja, in his judgment delivered on May 2, 2019, struck out the suit for being statute-barred.

A three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe-Wilson, in a unanimous judgment delivered on July 12, 2019, affirmed the Federal High Court’s verdict, dismissing the suit on the grounds that it was statute-barred and the court robbed of jurisdiction to hear it on merit.

Delivering the lead judgment of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mohammed Idris held that the matter had become statute-barred having not been filed within the 14 days period which the cause of action arose, as stipulated under Section 285(9) of the Nigerian Constitution.

The appellants, through their counsel, Ukpai Ukairo, on July 24, 2019, are urging the apex court to set aside the verdicts of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Electricity supply has been restored to Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area in Ondo South Senatorial District after five years of blackout.

The BEDC Electricity Plc said in a statement on Thursday that the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated a power project facilitated by the company and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.

According to the statement, BEDC and NDPHC jointly completed work on the rehabilitation of the project in the town.

It said with the inauguration of the project, 10 out of the 21 distribution substations in the Igbokoda community came on with power supply.

The BEDC said the substations in Larada, Ikuomola, Ilara , Orioketilu, Okoga College Road/Omotehin, GRA1, GRA4/NDDC, among others, were inaugurated.

It said, “The project, which is an ongoing exercise, is expected to extend to Okitipupa and other parts of Ondo South Senatorial District in due course.

“The restoration achieved by the BEDC with the speedy rehabilitation of the power project in conjunction with the NDPHC under the National Independent Power Project will bring positive effect on the social and economic activities in the area.”

Governor Issa Moussa of Zinder and Maradi State Governor, Zakiri Umar, both from the Republic of Niger, were on Thursday in Kano to rally support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

Salihu Yakasai, media aide to Kano State Governor, Umar Ganduje, said this on his Twitter handle beneath a photo of the governors and Ganduje.

Yakasai said, “H.E @GovUmarGanduje with his deputy H.E Dr Nasiru Gawuna, his former Dep H.E Prof Hafiz Abubakar, Minister of Interior Abdurrahman Dambazau and that of Water Resources, Suleiman Kazaure, Governors of Zinder and Maradi from Niger Republic, & others getting ready to receive @MBuhari #PMBinKano.”

Yakasai added that the two Nigerien governors were in Kano to rally support for the President Buhari’s re-election.

Foreign govs at Buhari’s rally sign APC’ll import voters – PDP

But the Peoples Democratic Party has berated Buhari and the All Progressives Congress over the presence of two governors from the Republic of Niger at the presidential rally of the APC in Kano.

The PDP accused Buhari of mortgaging the future of Nigeria.

He alleged that the President and his party, the APC, would also import voters from neighbouring countries for the February 16 Presidential election.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, who spoke with one of our correspondents, called the attention of the international community to the alleged plan by the ruling party.

Elections, he said, were internal affairs of Nigerians, wondering why the two foreign governors would be in Kano to welcome the President to his own country.

He said the presence of the two foreign governors had also vindicated the PDP’s claim that President Buhari and his party had been importing foreigners to attend the APC rallies.

Secondus said, “We have been saying it that the President does not consider the interest of Nigerians first in any of his actions. The President of Nigeria has sold the country to those who he loves more than the people who own the nation.

“The present of the two foreign governors is significant in many ways. One, it shows that the President and the APC, like we said, have been importing foreign leaders to the country to attend their rallies.

“We have been saying this and I’m happy Nigerians now that God has exposed them. Their evil plot has come to the open.

“You know that even in almost all the states where the President and his party have become unpopular, they keep on boasting that they will win with a landslide victory. One of the ways they planned to get the votes is the illegal importation of foreign voters, who are also underage.

“We want to call the attention of Nigerians to this assault on our sovereignty. We want the foreign and developed democracies to take note of this action and hold the President responsible if there is crisis before, during and after the elections.

“It is sad that the minister in charge of internal security of the nation was present. We know that they are planning negative things ahead of the elections. We just want to warn them not to plunge the country into crisis.”

Secondus added that the President had also demonstrated why his government had been treating the killer herdsmen with kid gloves.

But the President, Nigeria Voters Assembly, Mashood Erubami, said, “There is nothing unusual about the presence of the two governors with President Buhari. It could be coincidental but having to do with the joint efforts between them and the Kano State Government to confront the scourge of insurgency in Nigeria.

“The two governors are not registered voters in Nigeria and there is no possibility that they will mobilise their citizens across the borders without PVC to come and vote in Nigeria. It is unfortunate that opposition politicians always turn red to blue and would want gullible Nigerians to accept their agenda for the truth.

“I will advise those suspecting to be extra-vigilant during the elections. Also voters must be vigilant too in their different voting centres to ensure that those who did not register in their vicinity are exposed and are not allowed to vote.”

Ganduje enjoys immunity, presumed innocent until proved guilty – Buhari

Meanwhile, President Buhari at the campaign rally in Kano said the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, enjoyed immunity from prosecution as a sitting governor.

He also noted that under the Nigerian laws, an accused person remained innocent until proved guilty by the courts.

Besides, the President noted that the alleged dollar bribe Ganduje was seen stuffing in his pockets in a video widely circulated on social media had been taken to court.

Buhari was reacting to criticisms that he shielded his political associates like Ganduje and others from prosecution in the face of glaring evidence.

Emir of Kano hails Buhari on poverty alleviation

However, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has commended President Buhari for initiating programmes aimed at alleviating poverty in the country.

Sanusi gave the commendation when Buhari visited him while on a campaign tour on Thursday in Kano.

“Programmes like the N-power and TraderMoni where small traders across the country are given N10,000 each, can go a long way in boosting the country’s economy,” he said.

The Emir also called on the President to initiate more of such programmes so as to ensure the well-being of all citizens.

He also commended the Federal Government for introducing the school feeding programme, saying that the gesture had encouraged more parents to enrol their children in school.

According to Sanusi, the Emirate Council will continue to remind government on issues relating to well-being of Nigerians whenever the need arises.

Earlier, Buhari said his visit was not only to seek for re-election, but to also commend the people for their tireless support for his administration.

“I am in Kano not to tell the people what we are doing to develop the country, but to remind them on the need to perform their civic responsibilities by voting the right candidates. This is because I believe they are aware of what we are doing,” he said.

President denies shielding associates from prosecution

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Thursday, the President dismissed criticisms suggesting that his association with Ganduje was a smear on his anti-corruption stance.

The statement said some high-profile persons, including a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and a former governor he did not mention, were being prosecuted for corruption.

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, was also cited as another government official serving administrative leave to pave the way for investigation into corruption allegations levelled against him.

“Despite some of the suspects being close to the President, he had not shielded them from investigation, administrative suspensions and prosecution,” the statement added.

Specifically on Ganduje, the Presidency said “as a sitting governor, (he) enjoys immunity from prosecution in his own right.

Nigerien govs presence confirms voter register is compromised – SDP

The Social Democratic Party said the presence of the foreign governors at Buhari’s rally only confirmed the opposition’s claim that the nation’s voter register contains names of foreigners.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents on Thursday.

He said, “When you see representatives of foreign government attending a re-election campaign rally of a candidate in another country, it shows desperation of such foreign government to do everything possible to help influence votes in favour of its prepared candidate.

“In other words, the open show of commitment to Buhari’s re-election by the two governors from Niger Republic is a confirmation of the long time held allegation that a large chunk of the names contained in the voter registers in some of Nigeria’s border states belong to foreigners.

“It therefore suggests that most of the crowd we see in the APC rallies in Kano, Katsina and other border states are mixture of Nigerians and foreign citizens. That indeed amounts to driving election rigging to the ‘Next Level.’

“Be that as it may, the opposition by this revelation have been sensitised to expect and be ready to fight foreign influence during the election, especially in the form of hiring and importation of foreign commercial voters.

“The role of the Nigerian Immigration Service in this form of cross-border electoral malpractice needs to be investigated. It is therefore very unfortunate that the same government that is warning the UK and the US against interference in our election is busy inviting vulnerable foreign governments to come and help it fight the opposition in the election.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has appealed to Nigerians to have faith in the country despite what he called the underperformance of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The former President spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the public presentation of a book titled, ‘Politics as dashed hopes in Nigeria,’ which was written by Dr Auwalu Anwar, a former aide to Obasanjo.
The former president was the chairman at the event.
Obasanjo asked Nigerians to rise and defend the country’s democracy.
He said the time was ripe for every Nigerian to have the Nigerian dream “where there must be some commonalities.”
Obasanjo regretted that nothing had changed since Buhari assumed office, especially in the areas of security, fighting corruption and job creation.
He added that in few months’ time, elections would hold in four West Africa Countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire.
He told the gathering that one common feature in the elections was that the four incumbent presidents were in the opposition from where they won their elections.
He said, “I am not in despair and I would ask the rest of us not to be in despair; our hope lies in democracy with good governance as some of the hallmarks were free, fair, transparent and credible elections.
“Things may be gloomy, things may not be what they should be, leadership may be underperforming, but we must not lose hope.
“And I believe if we all see ourselves first as Nigerians and then we enunciate for ourselves the Nigerian dream, a land flowing with milk and honey, a land of opportunity, a land that gives you a stake in all that it is, I think, we will have a country that we can all be proud of.”
He also spoke about the book, which deals with the Buhari presidency.
Obasanjo said, “The book is about the Buhari organisation, Congress for Progressive Change, All Progressive Congress and Buhari’s political life and activities up to the second year of Buhari’s administration.
“President Buhari served the purpose of galvanizing efforts to get Jonathan and the PDP out of office.
“But on the midterm score card, Dr Anwar pointed out three significant and tangible areas of failure; security, fighting corruption and job creation. These three areas are still not yet a success story.”
Also speaking at the event, a former member of the House of Representatives, Usman Bugaje, said that there was the absence of wbat he called elite consensus in Nigeria.

The 12-year-old N7.65bn fraud trial of a former governor of Abia State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, has again been adjourned indefinitely by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The trial was fixed for Wednesday but Kalu did not show up in court.

Expressing displeasure at the absence of the former governor from court to continue his trial, the prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), accused Kalu of taking the court for a ride.

The prosecutor recalled that Justice Mohammed Idris had on November 12, 2018 revoked Kalu’s bail because he was absent from court on that day too.

Jacobs recalled that the judge was told at the last date that Kalu travelled to Germany for surgery without the permission of the court.

He recalled further that the judge ordered that the ex-governor should submit himself to the EFCC within 24 hours of his return to the country, failing which he should be arrested.

Jacobs said in view of Kalu’s absence from court on Wednesday, Justice Idris should invoke Section 352(4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and let the trial continue in Kalu’s absence.

“He (kalu) kept on campaigning for his senatorial ambition, slapping the court in the face; his attitude is unbecoming,” Jacobs told Justice Idris.

Reacting, Kalu’s lawyer, Prof Awa Kalu (SAN), said he did not wish to take issue with Jacobs, except he documented his complaints in an affidavit.

However, stepping in, Justice Idris noted that though the matter was adjourned till Wednesday for continuation of trial, he would not be able to go on as the fiat given to him by the President of the Court of Appeal to hear and conclude the case had lapsed.

Justice Idris, who was elevated last June from the Federal High Court to the Court of Appeal, said without a renewal of the fiat by the Court of Appeal President, anything he did in the case would amount to an illegality.

The judge held, “This matter was listed today because it was adjourned till today for defence. What has happened is that the last fiat that was issued by the President of the Court of Appeal has expired at the end of November 2018.

“On the 10th of January, 2019, I received a fresh fiat in respect of some matters that I have started and some new matters but this particular case was not mentioned.

“For this reason, I have a strong feeling that I shouldn’t continue with proceedings in this case unless there is a further directive from the President of the Court of Appeal.

“I should not proceed further, otherwise I might be acting without authority.

“In the circumstance, I am of the view that further proceedings shouldn’t go on until I receive further information by way of fresh fiat from the Court of Appeal President. As soon as I receive further instruction, hearing notice will be sent to counsel.”

In one of the charges, the EFCC alleged that Kalu, who was Abia State Governor between 1999 and 2007, “did procure Slok Nigeria Limited – a company solely owned by you and members of your family – to retain in its account, domiciled with the then Inland Bank Plc, Apapa branch, Lagos, an aggregate sum of N7,197,871,208.7 on your behalf.”

The prosecution claimed that the N7.1bn “formed part of the funds illegally derived from the treasury of the Abia State Government and which was converted into several bank drafts before they were paid into the said company’s account.”

The prosecuting counsel, Jacobs, said the ex-governor violated Section 17(c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, and was liable to be punished under Section 16 of the same Act.

Apart from the N7.1bn, which he was accused of laundering, the ex-governor and the other defendants were also accused of receiving a total of N460m allegedly stolen from the Abia State Government treasury between July and December 2002.

The prosecutor said they breached Section 427 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.

On their part, Jones Udeogu, Slok Nigeria Limited – Second and third defendants, respectively – one Emeka Abone, said to be at large, and another fellow, Michael Udo, also at large, were accused of collaborating with Kalu to conceal the “genuine origin” of allegedly stolen funds.

The EFCC said they were liable to be punished under Section 14(1)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004.

The defendants, who have been standing trial for 12 years, however, pleaded not guilty.

The senator representing Nasarawa West, Abdullahi Adamu, has said his joy would not be complete until President Muhammadu Buhari wins the 2019 presidential election.

Adamu, who is seeking third term in the Senate, spoke during his endorsement by a group, Renaissance Nigeria, in Keffi on Tuesday.

“My happiness and victory will never be complete unless President Muhammadu Buhari wins the 2019 presidential election,” he said.

He therefore urged members of the group to vote Buhari and all candidates of the All Progressives Congress both at the national and state levels.

He maintained that it is only Buhari that could rescue Nigeria from poverty.

The group’s President, Mr Yakubu Usman, said members were committed to Adamu’s victory in the forthcoming election.

He said their support for the senator was based on his past records in the areas of agriculture, education and health.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said those in the present administration will not only go to jail, they will go to hell if their corrupt acts are exposed.

He also explained why he forgave an ex-Vice-President and Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in an interview with the BBC Yoruba monitored by our correspondents.

Comparing Atiku with President Muhammadu Buhari, Obasanjo said his former deputy, though not a messiah, was far better than the incumbent President.

He said, “What I am saying is that where we are today; our present situation, if you look at those who are there today and our boss (Buhari), I insist that Atiku will do better than them.

“This is not a prophecy. Those in government today, if we expose them, all of them will enter hell; they will not only go to jail. They will go to hell. Whoever that God does not expose his sins to the public is the person whose secret is kept.”

Obasanjo, however, said he was not privy to the plans of Atiku if he became Nigeria’s next President.

He said, “I did not say he (Atiku) will behave like Jesus. I did not say he will behave like Prophet Muhammed, but he will do better, in fact twice better than what we have at present.”

Obasanjo said the President’s performance in the area of the economy was worse than his assessment of his (Buhari) knowledge of the economy in 2015.

The ex-President said Atiku was not an angel but he had atoned for his sins when he came to him in Abeokuta and sought forgiveness.

He said, “Those who talked about what I said about Atiku, what about what I said about Buhari? His performance is even worse than what I thought.

“I said Buhari did not know anything about economy. Have you not seen it? I said he did not know about diplomatic relations, have you not seen it?

Ex-President accuses Buhari of nepotism

While accusing Buhari of nepotism, Obasanjo said the President gave priorities to his ethnic group when appointing people into sensitive positions.

Obasanjo added, “Look at what is happening, the person that is leading us says he cannot appoint any other tribes into the posts he considers sensitive because he does not trust them. If he cannot trust my tribe and your tribe what is the benefit? And he still wants my tribe and your tribe to vote for him. So, he can ask us to vote for him but he cannot trust us to be appointed into sensitive positions. What is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander.

“If you don’t trust us, how do you want me to trust you ? If you trust me and I misbehave replace me with another person. But if only your maternal and paternal relatives are the only people you can appoint because they are the only people you can trust…

“In Nigeria, where we have tribes numbering about 500, you now said you could not trust some people . That is what we are saying.”

Obasanjo also berated Buhari’s economic policies, saying “Look at our economy, is it the way it should be? Our economy can never develop if foreign investors do not come to invest in the economy . But, as it is , they are not coming into the country and they will never come.”

On the activities of Boko Haram , Obasanjo lamented that the insurgents were deadlier than they were before the present administration .

Meanwhile, the National Coordinator, Yoruba Patriots’ Movement, Chief Oladosu Oladipo, said the anti-Buhari’s comment of Obasanjo was unbecoming of a statesman.

The group was of the view that the unsubstantiated allegations against the President had “reduced his (Obasanjo’s) value both politically and intellectually.”

Wondering about the inconsistency of the ex-President, Oladipo who spoke in Ibadan, said the aspersions being cast on Buhari had further impacted negatively on Obasanjo’s integrity.

Oladipo said, “Two things I see, making a U-turn or somersaulting in the broad daylight has reduced his value both politically and intellectually. It has reduced his integrity; reduced all his virtues and has put him as somebody whose words cannot be relied upon and who cannot mentor the up-and-coming generations. In fact, he is double-mouthed.”

In a statement issued by the group, the YPM said, “Those of us with genuine intentions, shall support these great leaders to take Nigeria to the next level. The national looters of yesterday should please go to sleep and give development a chance. We call on smaller parties to merge with the APC which is now a mega party. I want to advise Nigerians not to take Chief Obasanjo seriously.”

Oladipo described the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as a great man following the footsteps of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal on Tuesday rejected the Federal High Court, Abuja, and National Industrial Court of Nigeria’s orders stopping the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Onnoghen is facing trial for alleged false declaration of assets.

The CCT also held that the courts were of coordinate jurisdiction with the tribunal and so lacked powers to direct or supervise its proceedings.

The CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar, said these while rejecting a motion by Onnoghen asking the tribunal to adjourn indefinitely based on the High Court and the NICN’s orders that the parties must maintain the status quo.

He gave the ruling in a split decision of two to one. While Justice William Atedze gave the dissenting judgement, Justice Julie Anabor agreed with the tribunal chairman.

Meanwhile, Onnoghen was again absent from the hearing on Tuesday. It was reported that the CJN would again be absent from the hearing.

Justice Umar rejected the submission by the Defence Counsel led by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) that the tribunal should adjourn indefinitely based on the orders of the Federal High Court, Abuja, and the NICN which ordered the parties to maintain the status quo pending hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Olanipekun also argued that the tribunal should adjourn because the matter was already before the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

But noting that the Court of Appeal had yet to issue any order, the CCT chair agreed with the complainant’s counsel, Aliyu Umar (SAN), that the judgement cited were from courts of equal status with the tribunal as court of superior record.

Justice Umar said, “This is because the tribunal is established by the constitution under the third schedule to adjudicate on matters of asset declaration.

“Therefore any order from any court directing it not to carry out its duty is in crystal violation of the constitution.”

Justice Umar said an appeal from the tribunal could only go to the Court of Appeal.

The tribunal adjourned sitting till January 28 for hearing of Onnoghen’s preliminary objection where he is challenging the jurisdiction of the court.

While the sitting was on, a group — National Interest Defenders and Lawyers in Defence of Democracy — stormed the tribunal to protest against the CJN’s trial .

The groups carried placards of various inscriptions including, “APC wants to destroy our Supreme Court”, “Buhari wants judges to join APC” and “Nobody can force Onnoghen out.”

Spokesman for the group, Ikenga Ugochinyere, advised President Muhammadu Buhari against removing the CJN, saying that could cause tension in the country.

He said, “The President wants to install a pliable Justice to help the APC get favourable judgements from the Supreme Court in the Rivers and Zamfara APC crisis, in the presidential election and in the states where they are afraid they will lose elections. The states include Akwa Ibom, Delta, Lagos, Benue, Imo, Kwara, Plateau, Kaduna, Abia and Sokoto.”

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday asked community leaders to be accountable in the use of resources provided for the development of their areas.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities and Communications, Akeem Sulaimon, spoke during a two-day training programme organised by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs for Community Development Committees.

Sulaimon, according to a statement on Tuesday, said government required accountability in financial transactions, documentation and reporting.

He noted that the theme of the programme, ‘Community Development Practice and Activities in the 21st Century’, was apt because it bordered on how to develop communities across the state.

“I charge participants to tap from the wealth of experience of the seasoned facilitators and contribute positively,” he said in the statement.

The special adviser stressed that community development was the collective responsibility of everyone, adding that community leaders had the duty to positively impact the lives of people in their neighbourhood.

The Permanent Secretary, Local Government and Community Affairs, Fola Padonu, said at the end of the two-day training, the participants would be equipped with the knowledge to develop their communities.

Two men were, on Monday, arraigned before the Igbosere High Court for allegedly breaking into the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the Ijegun area of Lagos State and stealing items worth N680,000 at gunpoint.

The defendants, Bright Oriakwu and Babajide Akinola, were arraigned on five counts bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery, burglary and belonging to an unlawful society.

According to the prosecutor, Tunde Sunmonu, the defendants conspired with others still at large to break into the church and stole mixers, amplifiers and four speakers.

Sunmonu added that the defendants also stole from the people in the premises of the church.

The defendants were alleged to have committed the offences between November 27, 2015, and December 29, 2015, at No. 4 Ezimorah Street, off Marwa Road, Ijegun, Satellite Town, Lagos.

“The accused, while armed with a gun, robbed one Mr Chigozie Orgwu of his HP laptop worth N200,000, two mobile phones worth N110,000, a digital external drive worth N100,000, a watch worth N70,000 and a cash sum of N200,000,” Sunmonu said.

He added that the defendants were caught while trying to join an unlawful society, the Eiye Confraternity.

The offences, according to him, contravene sections 42 (a), 297 (a), 311 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The prosecutor, however, urged the court to remand the defendants in police custody and requested an accelerated trial.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye, however, ordered that the duo should be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till March 11 and 12 for trial.

The Peoples Democratic Party on Monday urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to resist attempts to compromise the commission.

It urged the electoral body to conduct the forthcoming general elections in a transparent manner.

The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the call at a press conference in Abuja.

Ologbondiyan said Nigerians were interested in credible elections and were wondering if the commission under Yakubu would be up to the task.

He cited one of the provisions in the recently-released election guidelines which allowed simultaneous accreditation and voting as one of the areas the commission needed to re-visit.

He said simultaneous accreditation and voting would distort the electoral process.

The party’s spokesman also raised concerns over the continued stay of Mrs Amina Zakari in the commission despite the claim that she was related to President Muhammadu Buhari.

He further alleged that the process of employing electoral officers had been compromised to favour the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Ologbondiyan also claimed that more than half of the card readers to be used during the elections had become obsolete.

He said the situation could create confusion on election days and facilitate the use of incident form.

He said, “The PDP therefore charges Mahmood Yakubu to demonstrate his credibility and ability to conduct free, fair and transparent elections by taking urgent and decisive steps to show that he has not been compromised by the APC and the Buhari presidency.

“To do this, we demand that Yakubu should immediately rejig the electoral guidelines in a way that accreditation must be first concluded, number of accredited voters ascertained and openly announced before actual voting.

“Anything short of this will only validate the position of Nigerians that INEC has been compromised by the APC.”

Ologbondiyan said Yakubu could not claim to be committed to a credible election while Zakari remained the head of the collation centre.

He added, “While we note that Buhari has bowed to pressure from Nigerians and has eased out Ibrahim Idris as Inspector-General of Police, we urge him to also lend credence to the electoral process by easing out his relation by marriage, Amina Zakari, from INEC.

“We are aware that Amina Zakari has since taken over the duties of the INEC chairman at the instance of the Buhari presidency.

“Today, the international community is wondering how a sitting President can be insisting that his relation must be the retuning officer in an election in which he is participating.

“In the same way, following revelations that the process of recruiting INEC ad-hoc staff has been compromised to favour the APC, the PDP insists that Yakubu must publish the names of all the ad-hoc staff that have been recruited in their respective constituencies to enable voters in those areas to assess the independence and integrity of such electoral officers.”

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, says ASUU will suspend its 10-week-old strike if the Federal Government agrees to release N50bn to revitalise public universities and N20bn to pay lecturers their allowances in their meeting on Monday.

The union resumes its negotiation with the Federal Government, and Ogunyemi insists they body will not shift its ground unless the government makes a commitment to release the money.

However, he said ASUU had lost confidence in the government since it failed to honour previous agreements.

Ogunyemi, who spoke with reporters in Ibadan at the weekend, said ASUU had rejected government’s proposal of N20bn to be paid in two tranches to revitalise public universities.

He said the union had asked the government to include the earned academic allowances in the 2019 budget.

He said, “We want them to pay N50bn as a sign of commitment this quarter.

“Our members have rejected the 20bn proposed by them that will be spread over two quarters in 2019. Our members have insisted on the release of at least N50bn.

“On the earned academic allowances, with N105bn not yet paid, our members are saying that even if you (government) are releasing N20bn, let it be stated clearly that it is only for ASUU members, and the balance which you promised to pay by four instalments, attach timelines to the balance and figures.

“In 2017, this government promised to include the earned academic allowances in the budget so that we won’t be talking about arrears. If the government had included it in the 2018 budget, we would not be talking about arrears now. “Our members are saying the government should take steps to include it in the 2019 budget and that is not late because they are still working on the budget.”

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to pay necessary attention to the creative industry and assist the sector to attract funds for development.

The governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, also said he would facilitate the building of a film village in the state if elected the state governor.

They spoke in Lagos along with the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP, Peter Obi, when they held a meeting with members of the creative industry including actors, producers and directors.

Atiku said, “I’m totally supportive of the industry to make it a big supplier of prosperity in the country. I’m also committed to appointing industry professionals within you to head relevant agencies that concern you such as the copyright agency, and the National Film and Video Censors Board.
“Of course, it goes without saying that if we want to promote this industry, we have to make sure you have access to funding, whether from the government or private sector. This industry has the capacity to make billions of dollars in income.”

Obi also promised to take the creative industry to a higher level.

“I want you to look at the background and the brand of who is promising you things. If you look at the candidates, the only one that comes from the private sector is Atiku. He understands business and finance. The creative industry is the second biggest in terms of production but when it comes to revenue, they are not up to top 50. But we would work towards making you the top 10. If there’s anybody who can promise and deliver, it is Candidate Abubakar,” he said.

In his speech at the event, Agbaje promised to build a film village in the state, if elected governor.

He said, “For nearly 20 years, some people have been promising a lot of things such as film villages but they have not done it. I promise you that come May 2019, the PDP administration will deliver on it. We will also have music schools and other things because if the economy of Lagos is not diversified, we won’t have jobs for our young ones.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government are to resume talks Monday (tomorrow) on how to resolve the impasse over the two-month-old strike embarked upon by lecturers.

National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, confirmed the development in a telephone interview in Abuja, on Friday.

He, however, said the union was not optimistic about the prospects of an early resolution of the industrial dispute.

In response to a question on whether there had been any fresh development with regard to the resolution of the dispute, Ogunyemi said, “I’ am afraid nothing new. I understand they will be meeting us on Monday. Let’s wait and see if they take a reasonable step; it will determine our next line of action. Until then, let’s wait and see.”

The ASUU president had in an exclusive interview last week said members of the union were tired of government’s failed promises.

He said, “Last year, they promised to release the funds but they did not until November when the strike began. Our members are saying they do not want promises again; what they want is action, implementation or disbursement of funds.

“The government must act in a way to convince the union that the agreement has not been set aside. To show that the government has not set aside the agreement, they should release one tranche.”

He explained that in order to forestall a situation where ASUU and the government would restart negotiations on arrears of earned academic allowances, both sides had agreed that “it would be mainstreamed into the 2019 budget.”

Ogunyemi also said, “We are going to have a discussion on when to commence renegotiation because there are still grey areas. If the government can substantially address these issues, we will be more confident to face our members on the way forward. For now, the signals we are getting is that our members do not actually want to accept this government proposal from us.”

Members of ASUU went on strike on November 4, 2018 to demand for improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government.

The union is also seeking the implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreements, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU; 2012 and 2013) and Memorandum of Action (MoA, 2017), among others.

The union is also asking the Federal Government to expedite action on the release of funds to revitalise public universities in accordance with the FGN-ASUU MoU of 2012, 2013 and the MoA of 2017.

The university teachers are also demanding the release of the operational licence of the Nigerian University Employees Pension Company.

The Director of Press at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Samuel Olowookere, could not be reached when one of our correspondents tried to get the reaction of the Federal Government on the issue

But a source in the ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that ASUU should be blamed for the delay in reopening the universities.

The source added that the FG had showed commitment to the ASUU’s demands and that it was better to start from what the FG had offered than to halt negotiation.

“The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had told the leadership of ASUU that the FG would accept many of their demands but flexibility is needed to implement the rest. They left the meeting happy and said they would discuss the progress with their other organs. But they had delayed in moving forward. The blame is no longer in on the FG. ASUU should come forward with what they think of the FG’s commitment so far.”

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit has launched a probe into the salary account of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, dating back to September 2005.

The probe predates the advent of the Bank Verification Number initiative of the Central Bank of Nigeria and is expected to expose some alleged questionable deposits made into the account of the embattled CJN.

A fact sheet from the NFIU to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), stated that nearly N100m passed through Onnoghen’s salary account with Union Bank Plc between September 2005 and October 2016.

Onnoghen’s salary in 2005 was N240, 202 but rose to N751, 082.37 in February 2008. However, the funds in his account were said to have surpassed his salary.

The document read in part, “His salary in 2005 was N240, 202. 20 and it rose to N751, 082.37 in February 2008. The salary remains within range till date.

“However, the turnover in the account from September 2005 to October 2016 was N91, 962, 362.49.

“He did not spend from the salary account from March 2015 to October 2016. The salary and allowances accumulated to N22, 520, 636.27 in October 2016 from N6, 132, 885.24 in March of the same year.”

According to the NFIU, investigations showed that the funds deposited in the account of the CJN are questionable and probably proceeds of crime.

“From the investigations conducted so far, it is plausible that the payments into the various accounts are bribes. This is because the sources of inflows into his accounts other than the salary account in Union Bank are unknown and probably fraudulent and the nature of the transactions (including structured payments) are not typical of the transactions of a public servant,” the statement added.

The Federal Government had last week filed charges against Onnoghen for allegedly failing to declare some assets before the Code of Conduct Bureau.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, on Saturday, said the leadership of the union suspended its meeting with the Federal Government meant to address the ongoing strike in the polytechnics because the government was not represented by top officials.
The National Vice President of ASUP, Mr Timothy Ogunseye, who said this in an interview, added that none of the top government officials in the Ministry of Education was present at the meeting.
He said the low representation by the FG was considered to be a waste of time and lack of seriousness on the part of the government.
According to him, the leadership of ASUP has suspended the meeting until the government is ready to address the issues under contention.
Ogunseye said the government was not showing commitment to issues affecting polytechnics because the children of the influential persons in the country were not in the polytechnics.
He said, “We met on December 17, 2018 and we couldn’t conclude on the issues and another meeting was fixed for January 10. But it was put off because the minister of education was said to be away in Aso Rock Villa. He is the Secretary of Buhari’s Campaign Council. The minister of state for education was said to be unavoidably absence. The Permanent Secretary, Sunny Ochonu, was said to be indisposed. Even the Executive Secretary of NABTE, Adamu Kazaure, was said to be indisposed.
“They asked one Mr Ojo, who is the Director of Tertiary Education, to address us and we felt that was a low-level representation. We felt the absence of these four critical stakeholders was injurious to our sector; and for that reason, we couldn’t continue with the meeting and it was put off. We are still expecting their invitation.
“But the emergency NEC meeting of the union was held on Thursday, and we reviewed reports from various chapters. We agreed that the strike should continue until government can show some commitment.
“Of recent, they promised to give us N15bn revitalisation funds as a show of commitment and ASUP did not object to that. But up until now, that has not been done.”
Ogunseye said the salient issues, which forced the lecturers to declare an indefinite strike, were not pecuniary but how to make the government address the dilapidated structures and lack of instructional materials to teach students.
