A big congratulations to you. Leone26: Hey guys, so my visa was approved this morning at the Lagos consulate 7a.m. appointment. Na today I see as una talk say dem dey bounce people. Now sef na pink paper dem dey give o.
I was directed to the sweet black American lady at window 7 ..Yeah she drilled me wella and cut me off a few times when I was trying to speak at length.
After greeting her. She asked how I heard about the school. Me: In the 3rd year of my bachelor's degree I used a textbook on mechanical engrg design published by Dr. Asiabanpour, (she cut me off here saying so the text was recommended to you by a Prof, which I replied in the affirmative).
She then asked me to list the other schools I applied to. Me: The University of Texas @ San Antonio, and Wichita State University, Kansas.
She then asked when I graduated and what I studied. Me: I completed my BS in 2014. Studied Industrial & Production Eng.
So she asked what I've been doing since 2014, in fact she read out what I filled on my DS form about a 2-month internship I did in 2017 where I worked on an offshore pipeline construction project as a Junior QA/QC Engr.
So she asked what I do presently. Me: I am currently a Project Engr. with zzzzz International Ltd in PH, and it is a Nigerian EPCI contractor (engrg, procurement, construction, & installation). I provide technical support to more senior mechanical systems engrs in the planning and execution of mechanical construction projects at offshore/swamp facilities operated by Shell Nigeria.
I could tell that she was reading through my DS form throughout. Pls fill your forms very well, clearly and professionally explain what you do at work here.
She then asked why do you want to study this course (MS Mech & Manufacturing Eng. at Texas State University, San Marcos). Me: I will have better opportunities and be at an advantage to join a major EPCI contractor like Subsea7 as a mechanical systems engr. when I return, because they value young engineers who've gained international exposure from their studies especially in the States. Also this program would enable me build technical competencies across 4 key in-demand disciplines: advanced materials eng., mechanical eng. design, micro electro mechanical systems, and additive manufacturing. (I speak very fast and gesticulate when I talk, and this helped here).
She then asked who's paying for the rest of my fees. My I-20 details are: tuition - 7,890 + living exp - 19,225 = $27,115. I got a graduate instructional assistantship that qualified me for instate tuition and a salary of $13,002. Me: My Dad would cover the rest. He works as a Senior Project Engr. with xyz in PH and my mum would be supporting him. She manages an elementary school owned by her and my Dad.
Next I heard was congrats your visa has been approved. You can pick up in PH, let me get the new pick up location address for you. Na so I just dey talk thank you Ma. thank you Ma
Biko guys try and prepare your responses very well. I had to record mine on my phone and listen to them everyday on my earpiece and this really helped. Trust me I was tensed due to the rate of denials I witnessed, but I just shut them out even when a well dressed dude before me was denied by the VO. The guy was telling her that he likes teaching and wants to give back to the society, when she asked him what his course would do for him.
Lemme go and book my flight men...fly emirates or Qatar air. I go like see that Dubai airport way my aunty dey use yab PH own...(I have never travelled outside this una country).
Thanks to God for everything, and also to folks like @brown2green and @fairheart who critiqued my transcript. Yes, I did the GRE (303) & TOEFL (105). Pls folks make out time and read previous threads especially towards the May, June, July times. They really helped in my prep. |

Waooo! Very brilliant transcript! Waiting for the gurus in the house to do justice to it... that been said, I wish you God’s favor brother! Kaylhey20: Good day everyone, this is my proposed transcript.
Help enhance and criticise . Thanks.
Me: Good morning Vo: Good morning , your passport and I-20 . Me: Passes it. Vo: Why are you going to the US. Me: For my bachelor's degree in Computer Science at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Vo: How many schools did you apply to. Me: Four, namely Fisk University, Washington and Lee University, Wheeling Jesuit University and Southern Illinois University at Edwardville . Admitted into Fisk and WJU. Vo: How did you hear about Fisk university? Me: I did an online research for universities that offer a flexible computer science bachelor's degree program. Fisk University was one of the universities I came across after stream lining my search to those university whose entry requirements aligns with my test scores.
Vo: Why Fisk ? Me: Aside that I was awarded a full scholarship, there is an on-campus program in Fisk university that really interests me, its the Google In Residence Program. Every fall Google assigns a senior software engineer as an adjunct lecture at Fisk University. The adjunct lecturer teaches the computer science freshman , introduction to computing and programming. They also help computer science majors with internship placement, access to tech fairs and hacklathons and a whole lot of opportunity. Vo: Why Computer Science ? Me: I have always had a passion for software and programming. After my high school, I attended an IT centre where I learnt about web development and designing. I feel this is the perfect time to advance in my programming career. Vo: What afforded you the full scholarship? Me: My admission application in total which includes my SAT score, Evaluated High School Transcript, Letter of Recommendations from high school teachers,Resume and Admission essay ranked me at the top of the applicants pool. Vo: What's your study plan? Me: Some of the courses I will be taking in my freshman year include Introduction to Programming with Python,Basics of Object Oriented Programming, Calculus 1&2, Critical thinking and some compulsory seminars and laboratory practicals. Vo: What are your after-school graduation. Me: After four years of studying Computer science, I will have acquired a lot of experience, skills and knowledge enough to start a digital start-up here in Nigeria. I hope to concentrate on transportation. When we look at the degree of traffic gridlock in Lagos, especially in the Third mainland bridge. This can lead to mental stress, depression and inefficiency. With the power of technology, I hope to solve such social problems. I also hope to branch into e-commerce , by approaching it from another perspective which is customer-driven. This will help the productivity of retail stores, business start-up and entrepreneur.
My interview is next week Tuesday. Anyone who is willing for a mock interview, please help me. Any other possible question , please throw them at me.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Floral895: Hello Nairalanders, I would be an ingrate if i don't share my transcript cuz what I learnt from this forum helped me during my interview and am still learning from other folks view. Now a bit of background information about my Journey to studying abroad, just think it will encourage someone out there. Journey started right after NYSC, but my focus was on UK and Australia ( Germany, Finland etc a no no due to the language stuff) and I applied to like 8 schools looking at Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship. after applying like 3 times for both scholarship and not been picked I said now I need to broaden my horizon, mind you I have browsed through what it takes to study in the USA but due to nthe fact that I have to write GRE, I just bone USA. In between, I applied to Unilag for MSc Anatomy ( focused on it and paused hunting for oversea study) and did quite well. Job hunting started again in Nigeria, Academia will be like you need to be registered for PhD bla bla bla but from my MSc experience I said PhD is outside the country. Afterwards, I said its time to write GRE, I mean no be spirit dey do the exam na, so I prepared well amidst my part time job and apprenticeship (rookie tailor I am) and got 303. Then I focused on PhD in Biomedical sciences, applied to like 3 schools and was still rejected, I cried rivers of tears. Now the week I got my last reject, after the depression thing for like a week, I asked myself what else and I went back to look at the rejection letter, what wast written there was that: your academic background is not fit enough..... then a Lecturer Mentor of mine said Girl, why don't you try MSc. So, the search began again for schools with funding in Biomedical sciences. Picked ETSU, cuz it was clearly stated GA was on ground plus they've got my previous transcript and test score with them (sending those documents cost a fortune as we all know). Now, since fall admission (2018) don pass, I applied for Spring (2019) even though people say Spring dont usually come with funding I just said let me try ( it wont hurt anybody na). Applied to other schools too ( Penn state and Purdue but for fall 2019) Surprisingly, ETSU admission came in first with full funding (GA) and deficit of 4 million. With Nairaland's help, I filled the DS 160 form myself and everything that follows ( paying visa, schedule appointment etc) Now for those that have siblings in the USA (I have 3 with same surname oooo), i was honest and filled their name there with their status. Also, filled in my part time job and that I have a Msc already too (although a friend advised against this) and my previous travel history in the US To my Interview, was interviewed by a female VO VO: pass me your I20 and passport VO: what are you going to do in the US me: to do my MSc in Biology conc Biomedical science at ETSU VO: where did you hear about the school me: from searching Anatomical society of america which has list of grad schools in anatomy and cell biology VO: as a GA what would you be doing me: taking up 2 lab sessions in a week VO: how will this deficit in your account be covered me: by my Dad and I passed the account statement I printed since Novemebr VO: what do you currently do me: am an Anatomy Instructor in bla bla bla VO:Do you have siblings in the USA me: yes, 3 VO: where are they and what are they doing me: in ABC state doing this and that VO: I will be approving your visa etc After like 4 days I picked my Visa Personally, I think you are responsible for searching out schools yourself, also if it requires that you do GRE don't cut corners with schools that doesn't require GRE, just do it. Also, funding helps lot I mean how many average Nigerians get $44,980 for schools when Americans themselves take loans to study. Also, asking questions can help a lot: Knowledge is power In between @ shawarma, can't wait to meet you in ETSU Biological science department (the best in ETSU ( free foods and stationery) lus our executive aide is bae) and Johnson city where the Transit bus is free for students , housinga nd food are cheap too Wishing everyone the best in Life. |

@bracelum, respect!!!! Your analysis was bracelum: You see what I was saying? If you no share transcript now, you go make everyone believe say na VO fault.
BOLD 1: So, you did not take a leave last year during your application? That was not a good reason and I feel you set a sad impression from that point. You can say stuff like "I couldn't articluate my study plan properly to the VO and I was rejected". A follow-up question might be "So, tell me about your study plan". Then, you can climb the wheel and murder your interview there.
BOLD 2: You nailed your coffin at this point. You should have connected your jobs to this current degree. Something like " I did my NYSC and due to my passion in accounting, I taught high school students basic knowledge on bookkeeping, cashflows etc(don't lie o! Make sure it's true). Thereafter, I secured a job as an Account Manager in Bleep where I prepared annual financial records and performed several accounting functions like X, X and X".
Since your dad is financing the trip, I don't think the funding was a problem.
Also, ignore all those things they told you about applying at 7am bla bla bla. Prepare well for your visa interview and you will nail it even though you do it in the middle of the night. |

Waooo!! Insightful!!! Thank you, God bless you @fairheart fairheart: SUCCESSFUL VISA INTERVIEW NUGGET TWO
If you complain that this is too long for you to read, I'm afraid to say you're not a student
HERE WE GO! First, I want you to understand I am sharing whatever you read here from personal experience as Study-abroad Consultant and as someone who has many students in my circle. Just take what you know is helpful and leave the rest. I'm going to use many words to explain few things. That is the trick of world's education system!
NOTE that the US embassy wants you to come for interview because they want to see and hear you first before they know you’re eligible for the category of visa you’re seeking. If not, there would be no need for interview. So, in this sense, you are required to prepare to be well seen and heard well.
Your next homework in preparing yourself for a successful F1 visa interview is to be psychologically calm—so that you can be seen (as genuine) and heard by the VO. Effectiveness begins in the mind, not from the documents, or the people you know. You must tackle fear, anxiety, and self-doubt rooted in lack of confidence in your own abilities. If you have never had any major interview or breakthrough a very difficult professional goal in your life, you could be a victim of fear and tension. I remember how I used to avoid eyes contact when I needed to talk to people. But now, a man that's not afraid will look you in the eyes, smiling and able to express exactly what he wants to say. So, the goal is to stand in front of the VO and remain psychologically calm as possible. To achieve this state of mind, especially if you are afraid of your upcoming interview, you may need the following:
ONE: YOU NEED AN INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT. Get that ready as soon as you can. List all the generic questions you know the VO usually ask during F1 interview. Take each question at a time. What do you think would be ideal to say to a question like, "How did you hear about this school?" Write the response down. It should be moderate, simple and unique according to your academic and career goals. No story! If you find it hard coming up with a fine response, seek for help.
TWO: HAVE YOUR TRANSCRIPT IN YOUR HIPPOCAMPUS I saw a transcript here last week in which the applicant quoted the VO as saying he did not need to have a prepared transcript for the interview (and visa was granted). How ignorant of the VO! The fact that he/she is a VO does not mean they have absolute understanding of how interview is conducted. Ask the VO if he/she did not prepare for the interview that got him/her the consular job? One of the things that portray a student as “not genuine” in front of a VO is inability to talk well during the interview. Believe me, this is one of the strongest reasons most F1 visas have been refused. The fundamental reason for interview is to check on the student whether he’s genuine or just taking advantage of the F1 visa category to migrate and “Japa” as some persons here would say.
So, how did you pass the exams that got you the first class, or second class upper or lower on your certificate? Because you studied your textbook, of course! Because you studied it and became familiar with the information, you kill the questions related to what you have studied on examination day. Even Presidents of nations prepare transcript for interviews, because they know they could mess up if such is lacking. There is no man that can speak and express himself effectively (especially when tense or under pressure) except the information has been well-stored and familiar with. There are not so many students who have trained their mind to be creative with words and expression when under pressure. Most of us shut down temporary and unable to say what we really desire to say or should say when under pressure and afraid.
So, for a student going for a major interview in a decade, except you really know what to say, you may not be able to say it. You should know what to say. You should know what you want to say based on your unique case ahead of the interview and that is why you need prepared yourself a transcript for the interview. Know it! Review it! Ask yourself questions and answer them about it. If I tell you that you will not be afraid upon citing the consular at the embassy, I may be wrong. Fear and doubt are a part of our existence as human being, and it is okay. Your duty as a student going to get the F1 visa is to rise above them and say what you should say to earn an approval.
I remember a time in 2016. As an advocate for youth education and our role in shaping future society, I was invited to speak at a church with over 100 members. Due to work, I did not get to outline what I will be speaking on, though the pastor sent me a topic my sermon or talk should revolve. I wanted to go on stage without a prepared speech, but when I look at the fact that I need to quote certain bible verses, I changed my mind and prepared heading and sub-heading for the speech. I then read, revise, and read what I will be saying. When I got on stage, with all eyes on me, I greeted the audience and delivered a very motivating speech. Because I had prepared what to say—knowing that the audience is aware of the topic—everything went well. The same is necessary for the F1 visa interview. Though things may go wrong due to certain things outside our direct control, yet, preparation against possible fear, anxiety and doubt attack attracts success.
Research shows that the hippocampus (a part of the limbic system in the brain where information and memories are retrieved) lags when your mind is under pressure and fear. Now, imagine if you've nothing stored up related to this interview and your fear of “what if I am refused” captured you? This is to say you may not be able to express yourself well; confusion! The consular may think you’re not a genuine student. Though, there is exception for students who stammer. So, read the transcript from time to time. Get familiar with it. Does that mean cramming? You call it cramming; I call it PREPARATION FOR A MAJOR INTERVIEW—one that is a defining moment for the rest of your career and even life.
IN addition to this, have mock over and over with someone who can assess you. This is as crucial as having the transcript.
THREE: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF I have seen professionals at the top of their career who have strong self-doubt in themselves. Once you tell them to go achieve something new, they come up with all sort of excuses that, if you trace the root of these excuses, you will find them in lack of confidence. Young, old, educated and uneducated all have issue of personal faith—depends on the level of success we are trying to achieve. You need to tell yourself that if others have done it and get their visas, you can do it, and do it better. A prospective student going for his interview soon told me that this evening. That's confidence!
I broke the chain of my own self-doubt several years ago, when I started reflecting on how strong I have been in the face of difficult situations. You, too, have seen a lot. You need to remind yourself that if you could go through what you've been through, be it your undergraduate education, professional training, personal growth--or whatever, you can also handle this coming interview. Revisit the list of your progresses, academic and professional experiences and endeavours. You have had your own success here and there, although you remember your failures more. So, don't listen to any shallow voice saying you can't have a nice interview and get the visa. Even Bill gate, Warren Buffet or Jeff of Amazon have times they take care of their self-doubt too. Take care of yours too, so you can do things confidently pursue and achieve your heart desires.
You need a lot of “I can do it”; a lot of "I am going to smile in there and talk to the VO”; a lot of "this is what I want for my career, and I'm going to get it." Tell yourself all these positive stuffs to heat up the root of your self-doubt and observe them dry.
FOUR: DRESS WELL & NEAT I do not have much to say here as "well and neat" have different meaning to each person. But I will recommend you wear something you are comfortable in. Look your best. But mind you, simplicity is the best! Don't dress to the interview like Olosho (smile)
FIVE: HOPE FOR THE BEST; BALANCE YOUR EXPECTATIONS As a young person, life has taught me that it is erroneous to think everything will always go the way I want. Sometimes, we are victim of circumstances we know nothing of, and that we cannot control—even after we have done our ultimate best!
Do not see the F1 visa as do or die, except you want to experience high blood pressure. If you have done your best, allow things to happen. Exhale all the worries that “what if I am refused” may have induced. What if you’re refused? So? You reapply! What is you’re refused again? You reapply! You don't give up just like that!
But have you also thought of “what if I am one of those good number of students Fairheart saw in his dream that got their visas in 2019? Of course! Think about that too!
This is what I call balanced expectation. Sometimes, life is 50/50! But this does not mean you should follow the erred opinion that what will be will be. No, most times, things be because we make them be. You still need to do your best. Just make sure you balance your expectation. Funny enough, balanced expectation on results we expect from our endeavours induce calm state of mind and boost confidence. Try it and see how all your worries and anxiety will be lifted. This is a magic pill I have used to liberate myself from unnecessary worries and anxiety when pursuing something I badly desire.
A balanced expectation is vital as we go through life and its modus operandi. King Solomon once said there is “factor of time and chances” at the centre of events that occur to every human being in life. Some things will go wrong even when we do the right thing. Some things will go right, even when we make mistakes and mess up. Why? Time and chances! These are forces of fate. You could be refused in May and get the visa in June or July. I always quote a close friend who was refused 8 times and got it the 9th time. I still ask why and what he did wrong during those 8 appearances at the embassy. Just imagine it too!
SIX: LAY YOUR CAUSE BEFORE GOD This is my last advice for all of you going for F1 this fall. Whether you believe in God or not, there is God. There is God o! And one of His attributes is that, He listens to genuine prayers of those who have faith in Him. I am not trying to motivate you. This is the reality. God hears prayer! So, if you are worried, pray. If you are unsure, pray. If you think you may experience hard luck, pray. If you have stubborn confidence that you will get a visa approval, pray.
A friend told me that each time he fast and pray on a particular thing he wants, door always open. He then said if fasting is not part of the prayer for the request, he hardly see the result. We both laughed. I almost took him for a prayer warrior. But then, I remember Jesus saying in Matthew 17:21 that without fasting and prayer, certain miracle will not happen.
Hey, maybe you should pray and fast too about this favour. Because you may need God's favour or good luck (the secular term for favour) to supplement your preparation. This could be the last thing to do to open the door.
Alright dreamers! I will try and re-post this for Spring 2020 students. Don’t forget, the approval rate will be higher than refusal this year. Keep counting the visas. God bless! |

Lol, Run before you fly, one step at a time, secure your VISA first, then, this question you asked will make sense; not the other way round. What’s the essence of spending your energy and time on cheap flight and at the end, no VISA (Godforbid). Mayorsmart005: Soon! Yet to appear for interview... Just trying to plan ahead. |

Hello, good morning everyone. Been following this section for a while but jus registered this morning, I was denied yesterday at Lagos embassy, all went well and I answered the questions to my own best, but the only thing I noticed was that the VO (a guy like an Asian) was not in good mood (coz the guy before me fought with him and gave him a lot of stress and argument). Now I want to refire! Coz am sure I deserve to be approved and I will be approved (in my second attempt) .Please is it possible to still gt a date before 23 December? Please help! |
