IRETI'S DREAM (TRAVAILS OF A TRAFFICKED VICTIM) For so long, she had always dreamed of travelling out of the country. All efforts in pursuing her dream after secondary school proved abortive. Despite the hardship faced by the family; Ireti never gave up on her dream. As things became harder, she resorted into doing menial jobs for people in her neighborhood. It was during the course of this job that she met with Jessica; a distant cousin of Mrs Thompson who treated Ireti like her own daughter due to her diligence and humility. Ireti's hope of travelling abroad came alive when she was given an offer to travel abroad by Jessica. It was unknown to Ireti and Mrs Thompson that Jessica had an ulterior motive of trafficking her to Italy to work as a commercial sex worker. On the day of departure, Ireti and her mother both could not hold back their tears as they both knew they wouldn't be seeing each other for a long time. Amidst the tears, Ireti's mother prayed for her and admonished her to always remember the daughter of whom she is. Then they bade each other farewell. On getting to Europe, all her hopes of furthering her studies and working we're dashed as she realized that she had been deceived by Jessica as she was forced to work as a commercial sex worker. With pain and regret, Ireti continued working as a commercial sex worker for years. All through those years, she suffered a lot of stigmatization and abuse but she never give up. She look forward to a day she would gain freedom. One day, while waiting for her sex client to come pick her for the night at a bus stand. She met a saviour named Mr Greg who heard her muttering words to herself. He noticed Ireti's health looked frail so he tried talking her out but she was restrictive as fear of who Mr Greg might grip her. Unknown to Ireti, Mr Greg was an anti-human trafficking advocate. Mr Greg was persistent in knowing her but just when she was about to respond she slumped and was rushed to the nearest hospital. There she was diagnosed with chronic cervical cancer. After she was revived, Mr Greg re-introduced himself as an anti human trafficking advocate and asked to know what could have happened. On knowing this, Ireti realized she needed to lend out her voice for help. After hearing Ireti's story; Mr Greg was touched and resolved to help Ireti and others that were trafficked. Ireti wished she never give in to Jessica's deception. She knew her time was up as life slowly creeps out of her. With teary eyes, she asked Mr Greg to help her by making sure no one ends up like her, thereafter she gave up the ghost. Mr Greg contacted a NGO involved in anti human trafficking in collaboration with the agency involved in anti human trafficking to rescue others that were trafficked. Ireti's dream turned out a nightmare due to deception. Let's do make sure we do our best so no one ends up like Ireti. Say NO to human trafficking! #endmoderndayslavery #EndHumanTraffickingNow |

20-Year-Old Nigerian Narrates Attempted Rape Experience As Maid In Iraq Okunade said her maternal uncle received the money from her mother and sent it to other agents along the trafficking chain. BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKNOV 11, 2020 Kaosarat Okunade, a Nigerian who was trafficked to Iraq, says male residents in two of the houses she worked in tried to rape her. Okunade, who was 19 when she left Nigeria, told SaharaReporters that her mother paid N250,000 to an agent to facilitate her trip, contrary to the usual practice of the agency or the household in need of an African maid paying for the travel. Okunade said her maternal uncle received the money from her mother and sent it to other agents along the trafficking chain. According to her, she was told by the agent that she would be going to Dubai. When her travelling document came out, it was Baghdad, the Iraqi capital. Okunade said she had never heard of the country before she embarked on the trip. "I worked in like four houses in Iraq," she said. "They want to rape someone. They wanted to be touching my breasts; the work was too much; that is why I had to come back." Okunade said she worked in two houses on the first eight days of her arrival. "I worked in one house for three days. I worked in the second house for five days," she recalled. "In the first house, the woman just gave birth, and I didn't know how to take care of a baby. "In the second house, I shouted at the son; he was trying to bring down the television. The Madame decided that she didn't want me." Nigeria does not have any diplomatic representation in Iraq, so Okunade decided to return to Nigeria after enduring working in a third house, where she said sexual passes were made at her. Okunade said she ran to the police, who returned her to the job placement office. "I stayed in the office for three months. They beat me and broke my phone. It was the $300 I made from the first house where I worked that I used to eat," she said. In the fourth house where she worked as a maid, she said she endured molestation. "I had to record the Madame's son trying to rape me for him to leave me alone," Okunade said. "When I told them I was too tired to work, and I wanted to go home, they beat me and seized my phone." She eventually established a connection with Hopes Haven Foundation, an NGO that tracks and rescues trafficked women. Okunade said all the money she had earned in the last three months of work was used to pay for her return ticket to Nigeria. "I came back with nothing," she said. The N250,000 I paid my mother's brother, we borrowed it. My mom is sick, and there's no money, I did not give her anything." The 20-year old who spent eight months in Iraq said she did not complete her secondary school education. She said she traded second-hand clothes before her ill-fated search for a better life in Iraq. According to Hopes Haven, there are 12 more women on their database in Iraq. The foundation estimated that there could be many more as traffickers have been placing adverts for work in Baghdad and there are persons who search for vulnerable victims to take the bait. |

The federal government decided to remove petroleum subsidy and gave approval for increase in electricity tariff when the nation is still battling with the effect of covid-19 which has brought about mass job loss and high inflation coupled with the fact that several citizens are frustrated. A sensitive government wouldn't have given a go ahead for such policies knowing fully well that the masses wouldn't be able to cope with the effect. Come to think of it, why will the government remove petroleum subsidy when we do not have working refineries? This government promised us that refineries will work but 5 years in government, nothing has been done and the irony is that staff are being paid salaries in refineries that are not working. Why give approval for increase in electricity tariff when we practically have been paying more for power we don't consume? Why can't the federal government ensure there is stable power before punishing the citizens? The government always want the masses to adjust to their policies yet the cost of governance is still high, they still travel abroad for medicals, they still collect 100% salaries plus other benefits, do they really care about us? When will they agree that their salaries be slashed? NLC we support the strike and please don't chicken out, be the voice of the voiceless masses at this time. |
TheGodlessGod:My friend, rest na. Your party don lose, accept it in good fate. |
Ategberoson:If Ambode had done well as a governor, he would have been able defeat Tinubu, same thing was tried with Fashola but because tinubu and his folks saw that the masses were behind him, he had to allow him go for 2nd term. |
aremuforlife:Where is the disrespect sir? The ban is for riggers. How many high profile politicians has the country ever prosecuted for electoral crimes? |
