Open Letter To Engineer Seyi Makinde : Preserving Our History, Rewriting Our Story

Written By 'Bayo Adeyinka

Your Excellency,

The circumstances surrounding your election show that there is a purpose why providence cast the mantle of leadership of Oyo State on you. I believe you have an assignment that goes beyond basic governance. You are going to occupy Agodi Government House that has served as official residence to leaders of the former Western Region and later Oyo State such as the late sage Obafemi Awolowo, Ladoke Akintola, Uncle Bola Ige and others. Ibadan is the political headquarters of the South West and it has pleased Divinity to put you as a custodian of the place. Ibadan has always been pivotal in providing direction for the Yoruba nation. As you know, Ibadan was founded when the old cities of Oyo-Ile, Owu and Ijaiye were destroyed following the collapse of the Oyo empire. Other towns found Ibadan as a refuge and the town harboured people from different parts of Yorubaland. It was also the armies of Ibadan that halted the incursion of the Fulani army into Yorubaland in 1840. Ibadan has been instrumental in bringing the much needed succour to the Yoruba race at critical points of their history. The renaissance of the Western Region during the period of the leadership of the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo also started from Ibadan. Consequently, you have a burden of leadership, not only for Oyo State but for the entire Yoruba nation.

I want to go into this discourse by sharing an experience I had today. I went on a tour of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA and it gave me mixed emotions. As the tour guide took us through the various sections of the museum, I could only wonder at the deliberate and intentional efforts at preserving history. Starting with Egyptian history, I saw artefacts from the time of the female Pharaoh, Hatshepsut. I listened to her story and how she took the throne instead of Thutmose. I also saw the artefacts in honour of previous Pharaohs that she tried to destroy in her attempt to erase their history. I learnt about how the Egyptian Pharaohs were buried and saw their tombs. I saw various arts depicting their culture and worship.

The tour guide also took us to another section that contained Assyrian and Babylonian art. I saw art from the times of Nebuchadnezzar, Ahasuerus and Darius. I saw a particularly striking artefact from an Assyrian king called Sargon that was referred to in the Bible in Isaiah 20:1 ( In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod, (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against Ashdod, and took itwink. I saw references to Nebuchadnezzar and we finished the day with a tour of art works from the Mesopotamia. We couldn't even tour the Graeco-Roman, Islamic and Asian sections. There was a crowd and each visitor was attached to a tour guide. In 2016, 7.3m people visited the museum and paid an average rate of $25 per person. That is $182.5m grossed that year. In Naira, that is about N65.7b! Furtheore, parking for up to 4 hours attracts a fee of $42. If 100 cars park every 4 hours, that is $4,200 and if 500 cars park in a day, that is $21,000 daily. That translates to N7.5m parking fees daily and N45.3m grossed in a 6-day working week! There is also an in-house restaurant that serves meals on a pay-as-you-eat basis. Talk about IGR.

As we took the tour, I thought about our Yoruba nation. How much of our history has been preserved? How much will still be known in the next 100 years? Will the next generation know about Oduduwa, Oranmiyan, Lagelu, Ogedengbe, Afonja, Alaafin Aole or even Obafemi Awolowo among others? How much efforts are we making to preserve our history, culture and language? Can we tell our story now so that another people or nation doesn't tell it in future?

I believe you should take on the responsibility for this challenge by pioneering a renaissance that will put your name in the annals of history forever. It is good to build roads and create infrastructure. It is good to build schools and ensure citizens get good and affordable education. It is good to provide excellent health services. But it is best when a nation's history is preserved for future generation and they are saved from extinction. 'Omo to so ile nu, o so apo iya ko'. The Yoruba nation is gradually going extinct and it will require a deliberate and intentional effort to reposition her.

I don't believe in just pontificating or pointing out issues with no attempt at giving solutions. So many ideas went through my mind on that tour. We have Cocoa House which still stands as one of the monuments of our Yoruba nation. You can carve out a significant part of the first few floors and the basement for the Yoruba museum (I know there is a small museum at the penthouse but this is nothing compared to what I'm postulating). The Ifa body of knowledge is a major area we need to preserve. There are 256 'odu ifa' which only the 'initiated' know. We need to democratize this body of knowledge and consciously create historical basis and learning points from them. Can you imagine an Ifa section at the Yoruba museum that has 'Ifa priests and priestesses' as tour guides? Can you imagine them dressed in their immaculate white robes as they explain to visitors the basis for their dressing among others? The Ifa section can contain the 'opele' (divination beads), 'opon' (divination tray), cowries, etc. Each 'odu ifa' should have a dedicated section on a wall with explanations while the tour guides provide the oral literary corpus. One can consult renowned people like Professor Wande Abimbola to populate such a section. We can do the same for our various traditional deities: Ogun, Sango, Oya, Obatala, Osun and others. It is possible to isolate the mysticism and superstition associated with these worship systems and elevate it into art-form.

The Yoruba museum will have the Ori Olokun, carvings of great warriors of Yoruba nation such as Ogedengbe Agbogungboro, Kunrunmi of Ijaiye, Fabunmi of Oke-Imesi, Moremi Ajasoro, Aare Latosa, Soun Ogunlola among others. It should incorporate a section dedicated to the Yoruba civil wars (the Owu war, Kiriji war- possibly the longest civil war in the world as it took place for 16 years, Jalumi war, etc). We can consult Prof Banji Akintoye and others of his ilk to reconstruct these very important piece of our history. The history of towns and villages in Yorubaland should also have a prominent place. We can have tablets and big screens placed at various places which will reel out required information at the touch of a button. It can be done.

One major aspect of the proposed Yoruba museum should be our music. The Yoruba nation has very diverse musicology- from the now extinct awurebe, were, sakara, waka, bata, apala, juju and fuji among others. We need to document our rich music genres and their proponents such as Tatalo Alamu, Ayinde Bakare, Dauda Epo-Akara, Tunde Nightingale, Ayinla Omowura, Haruna Ishola, Kayode Fashola, IK Dairo, Batile Alake, Salawa Abeni, Yusuf Olatunji, Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Orlando Owoh, Kokoro, Fatai Rolling Dollar, Shina Peters, Segun Adewale, Kollington Ayinla and Sikiru Ayinde Barrister among others. The family house of Ayinde Barrister at Ayeye in Ibadan can be converted to a Fuji museum. We need to urgently save Fuji music. There can also be a dedicated section to music artistes of Yoruba origin such as Seal, Shade Adu, Fela, Angelique Kidjo, Bobby Benson, Roy Chicago, Brewster Hughes, Ambrose Campbell and others. We should do the same for our dances and poetry forms such as 'ijala', 'ekun iyawo', 'rara' and various 'orikis'.

We cannot leave our thespians out of the proposed museum. The works of cultural ambassadors such as Hubert Ogunde, Moses Olaiya 'Baba Sala', Ade Afolayan, I Sho Pepper, Papalolo, Jacob and Aluwe, Ade Omonitan, Duro Ladipo, Oyin Adejobi of 'Kootu Asipa' fame, Lere Paimo, Jimoh Aliu, Baba Wande, Kola Oyewo and many others should be on display. I'm sure the family members of these thespians will be willing to turn over mementoes and other relevant documents for the purpose of immortalization of these giants of the arts. Permit me to dwell a bit more on entertainment. The Wedding Party 1 & 2 grossed N3.5b at the cinemas. Half of a Yellow Sun grossed N340m and A Trip to Jamaica grossed N200m. Carefully packaged Yoruwood movies featuring major historical characters such as Oduduwa, Timi Agbale, Ogedengbe Agbogungboro, Alaafin Aole and modern Yoruba characters such as Obafemi Awolowo, Wole Soyinka, Fela and others can be box-office hits. NEXIM has a facility for entertainment and Oyo State can access this through a Special Purpose Vehicle. By the way, why has there not been any movie on the life and times of Obafemi Awolowo just like there have been movies about Ghandi, Nehru and Nelson Mandela? Short documentaries on Yoruba towns and villages, characters, native foods, how places got their names, etc will form part of the museum which will be fully automated and will serve as a tourist attraction. It will generate revenue for the government. Initial seed fund can be generated from the movies shown at the cinema.

With our rich array of foods, we can include Food Festivals where we celebrate our traditional foods and soups such as amala, iyan, gbegiri, ewedu, osiki, isapa, efo riro, lafun and ikokore among other foods. We should also showcase the Yoruba masquerades- Alapansapa, Oloolu, Abidiege and others.

Finally, may I espouse the need to have a Yoruba Walk of Fame similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame (which attracts 10m visitors annually) where Yoruba achievers are recognized and their stars emblazoned on a dedicated sidewalk similar to the Hollywood Boulevard. We can have different categories such as literature where icons like Amos Tutuola, Wole Soyinka, JF Odunjo and D.O. Fagunwa among others will be recognized. Cinematographers such as Tunde Kelani, Tunde-Alabi Hundeyin of Dudu Heritage, etc can be recognized for their contribution. Various categories such as Television, Film, Radio, Music, Video, etc will feature. The Yoruba Walk of Fame should be administered by a Yoruba Trust Council comprising of eminent Yoruba nationals who will select awardees through a very rigorous process. Imagine the tourism potential that is embedded in this proposal. With the Yoruba race- more than 40m strong- spread across Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Cuba and Brazil and some parts of the Caribbean, this re-awakening can spur tourism in an unprecedented manner. With other details worked out around this project, it may turn out to be a top revenue earner for your government.

To jumpstart this renaissance, you may wish to send a bill to the State House of Assembly to enable a law making every civil servant in the State put on traditional attires every day of the week. Truth be told, the efficiency of the public sector does not lie in their wardrobe but in the inspiration provided to follow a new way. Also make Yoruba a compulsory subject for all schools that operate in the State- from primary to secondary. China has not lost its culture and language inspite of the influence of the western world. The language of instruction from primary school to the University in China remains the Chinese language. Go a step further by encouraging the Oyo State House of Assembly to conduct their plenary sessions in Yoruba while you conduct your Executive Council meetings in mother tongue also. Can you do the Yoruba nation a favour by streaming such an Executive Council meeting live? That will be a first in history- and you should have it at the back of your mind to be a history maker.

I recall the words of the late Professor Akinwumi Ishola, "When a language dies, the culture atrophies". According to The Centre for Endangered Languages, “Language is the key to the heart of a people. If we lose the key, we lose the people. A lost language is a lost tribe, a lost tribe is a lost culture; a lost culture is a lost civilization. A lost civilization is invaluable language lost; it will be consigned to oblivion.” You, Engineer Seyi Makinde can do this, not only to save the Yoruba culture but also improve tourism and generate the needed revenue from this neglected sector. As you work on the very important tasks of rebuilding the infrastructure, health, education and other critical areas of our economy, please do not neglect this area. It will determine our continued existence as a race. You are the progenitor of valiant men- Omo Akin (Makinde)- and may God give you the courage of your conviction to step forward like the armies of Ibadan in 1840 who stopped the invasion and encroachment of our common patrimony.
PoliticsBREAKING: Court Stops Supplementary Governorship Election In Adamawa by adeoluphilips(op): 1:08pm On Mar 14, 2019
BREAKING: Court Restrains INEC From Conducting Supplementary Governorship Election In Adamawa

A state High Court sitting in Yola has issued an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting supplementary governorship election in Adamawa State.

Justice Abdulaziz Waziri of State High Court 4 gave the order following a motion ex parte filed by Movement of Restoration for Defence of Democracy (MRPD), claiming that it's party logo was excluded from the ballot paper for the March 9 governorship election conducted in the state.

However, a seasoned constitutional lawyer, Sunday Wugiri, told SaharaReporters that "though the order is valid for now, the court lacks jurisdiction to grant it”.

“Only a Federal High Court can entertain any matter that concerns federal institutions like INEC,” he added.

At a press briefing in Yola on Wednesday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had accused Governor Jibrilla Bindow of planning to use the MRPD to scuttle the supplementary election through unnecessary legal bottlenecks.

"It has come to our attention the desperate moves by the leadership of Adamawa state government to upturn the mandate of the people,” it said.

“One of the alleged moves is to lobby the presidency to cause the State High Court to slam INEC with an order of injunction restraining the electoral body from conducting the supplementary election and cancel the entire elections.

"They intend to use a governorship Candidate who allegedly claimed that the logo of his party was omitted on the ballot in the last governorship election to file a case before the state High Court.”

However, Kashim Gaidam, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC reacted thus: “For your information court orders cannot stop elections.

“Having said that, only INEC at the national office, can respond to any matter involving court orders.”

Professor Andrew Haruna declared the Adamawa State governorship election inconclusive, citing the slim margin of 32,476 votes between while cancelled ballots amounted to 40,988.

Ahmed Umar Fintiri, candidate of the PDP had polled 367,471 votes, while the incumbent governor, Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 334,995 votes.

INEC has scheduled the supplementary election for March 23.

PoliticsAlao-akala: The Only Standing Apc Figure In Oyo State by adeoluphilips(op): 4:16pm On Mar 11, 2019
ALAO-AKALA: THE ONLY STANDING "APC FIGURE" IN OYO STATE

I quoted "APC FIGURE" because Otunba Alao-Akala is an ADP candidate who signed an agreement to support APC in the just concluded 2019 gubernatorial election.

Few days to the Oyo Guber elections, the National Leadership of the APC, having realised the great damage done to the popularity of APC by Gov. Abiola Ajimobi during the Presidential elections, consulted Otunba (Dr) Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala in a bid to brighten the chances of their flagbearer Adebayo Adelabu.

The consultation results to an agreement which saw Otunba Alao-Akala and his deputy governorship candidate, Prof. Olaiya Abideen Olaitan, stepped down their ambition to support the candidature of Adebayo Adelabu of APC.

This decision means a lot in the political calculations of Oyo State, but as it appears after the election, Otunba (Dr) Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala's decision was the only thing that favoured the APC as all other factors did not go in their favour.

Recall, from the results of the Federal elections held on February 23, 2019, PDP won APC at Presidential polls with 1,411 votes having won 18 LGA with APC winning 15 LGA.

However, the March 9, 2019 Guber elections was different. Although APC/ADP partnership was a good move, but the coalition of all other major opposition parties and sentiments against Gov. Ajimobi was stronger.

The PDP won the APC with with a margin of 157,645. An election which saw the incumbent Governor & Deputy Governor, the APC Guber Candidate & Deputy, several APC House of Rep Candidate-Elect and APC Senator-Elect all lose at their Local Government Areas.

The PDP won 28 LGAs and APC won 5 LGAs namely; Ogbomoso North, Ogo-Oluwa, Surulere, Oriire and Irepo all which are Otunba Alao-Akala's strongholds.

Alao-Akala is the only one standing even against the popular sentiments that saw mighties fall.

This is no doubt a result of his integrity and trust his followers have in him as a leader despite the numerous rumours flying around that he received $6 billion, #10 billion, etc.

It is obvious now that if Otunba (Dr) Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala had not pitched with the APC, PDP would have won the entire 33 LGA, a development which might not be very good for our democracy. He is the only "standing APC figure" in Oyo State.

It is also safe to assert that if Otunba (Dr) Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala had not advised his followers to vote APC in Governorship, ADP would have won more House of Assembly seats.

On this note, Alao-Akala is an extraordinary leader entrusted with huge trust and respect by his people. This is a rare quality especially in Nigerian political landscape.

I implore Otunba (Dr) Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala to keep being a good leader in fairness and justice as he has been doing and improve on it to achieve a better Oyo State and a better Nigeria.

I congratulate the Governor-elect, Engr. Seyi Makinde of PDP for emerging victorious at the polls and wish him a successful tenure in office.

Our major interest in politics is good governance of our dear State and Nigeria.

Thank you.

THE APC/ADP ALLIANCE: THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER

The outcome of the February 23, 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections, by revealing the preferences of the electorates, has expectedly ushered in a manoeuvres by the leading political parties in Oyo State calculated at winning the much-loved governorship position. In the quest for electoral advantage, parties are bargaining and negotiating, seeking alliances and forming coalitions.

On its part, a week or so ago, the top echelon of the APC, in its wisdom, stretched out a hand of cooperation to me as the flagbearer of the ADP in the forthcoming March 9 election. Conscious of how far-reaching my decision as a leader will be, not only for my humble self, my teeming followers and admirers, not to mention the multitudes of the citizens of Oyo State, I sought for a little time to reflect deeply and consult widely.

The single most important consideration is the destiny of Oyo State, not the idle, ill-founded, false and mischievous imputation of a mercenary motive to me. The good Lord has blessed me abundantly and I am too poised to sell conscience.

As constituted today, all of the South West is ruled by the APC and enjoys the privileges and benefits, tangible and intangible, of being a part of the party at the center. Surely, analysts and pundits agree, it will be improvedent for the Oyo State to move out of this favoured group of state in the APC political wilderness.

Abiding in the APC will help Oyo State facilitate the following projects, to name a few:the Ikere Gorge dam for farmland irrigation and electricity generation, resuscitation of the lgbeti marble industry and the termination of the Lagos-lbadan dual carriageway at Ojoo. An automatic boomq will be the siting of a Federal Polytechnic here for us. In addition, we must not forget the agenda of regional integration, prominent in Southwestern policy planning, in the recent years, which includes, just to mention a quick example, the speedy completion of the standard gauge rail line Linking Lagos and lbadan and all the way to llorin and beyond.

As to the LAUTECH issue, I have received assurances that it will be resolved speedily and fairly, in our favour.

The dictates of patriotism- to Nigeria, Oyo State and to the South West-have compelled my decision to accept the hand of co-operation of the APC with regards to the gubernatorial election while ADP candidates running for the State Assembly positions will remain on the ballot.

One other factor is key, the electability of APC's governorship candidate. It is my considered view that he should be given a fair chance and not hoist on the petard of anyone else. At forty-eight, the APC's candidate for the governorship, Mr. Adebayo "Penkelemesi" Adelabu is young, energetic, forward-looking and able. A technocrat, he has an intimidating resume, starting with a first class in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-ilIfe at the age 21 and featuring a phenomenal rise in the financial services industry culminating in a deputy governorship at the Central Bank. As a former Governor, I see him as an astute manager of men, materials and money, just right for Oyo State. He has assured me he will not turn up as a shadow governor beholden to a godfather or godfathers pulling strings behind the scene.

The ADP as a party and my humble self, therefore, have no qualms, in lending our support to the APC in the forthcoming March 9, 2019 gubernatorial election so that we can all move Oyo State to the next level.

OTUNBA (DR.) CHRISTOPHER ADEBAYO ALAO-AKALA

APC reveals what Alao-Akala demanded before agreeing to support Adelabu for Oyo governorship

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed some of the demands made by former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, before agreeing to pitch his tent with the party and its candidate, Adebayo Adelabu, for the March 9 governorship election.

According to a statement signed by Southwest Zonal Secretary of the party, Ayo Afolabi, APC did not induce Alao-Akala financially as being alleged.

According to Afolabi, “this type of allegation can only exist in the minds and imagination of heavily corrupt PDP and their supporters. It is out of place for APC to give financial inducement to anyone with a view to gain or get the support of any one talk-less of a person of Gov Akala’s calibre who was until some six month ago a strong member of our Party.”

On what the party actually promised Alao-Akala to get his support, Afolabi said: “Akala made some certain demands which includes among others: the completion of the Teaching hospital in Ogbomosho which he wanted to be put to immediate use as soon as possible, the issue of LAUTECH which he wanted the governments of APC to address immediately and other Sundry issues which are the basic ingredients for good governance.”

The party scribe described as blackmail, reports and allegations that APC offered money to Alao-Akala in order for him to drop his governorship bid on the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in order to work for Adelabu.

“We therefore enjoin the public to ignore such ranting of lazy minds whose only intentions is to play politics with the integrity of our party and confuse the public.” Afolabi concluded.

The dexterous contrivance shaped of honorable Wumi Abimbola Oladeji and the avalanche of exploitation in representing ogbomosho north constituency which as project her complaisant towards second time to be the threshold to another blissful atmosphere for the constituent. The constituency which from the first day of Oladeji daughter has been experiencing excellent turn around that makes the prosperity conspicuous.

However, number of people has came with several representative styles but it's indubitable that she stand different and her style of representation is of highest score. Battle for the Soul of Oyo State

As the battle for the soul of Oyo state hits up, the Oyo state chapter of ATIKU SUPPORT GROUP 2019 has collapsed it's structure into the Adebayo Adelabu Penkelemesi Campaign following the directive of our leader, former Governor his Excellency Otunba Christopher Alao Akala with its 33,000 members spread across the thirty three local government of the state,it has been agreed that the organisation be renamed as Akala Adelabu Initiative to reflect the ambition of the group.

In an interview with our correspondence Comrade Olusegun Adedokun the ASG Oyo state Coordinator gave the reason why they collapsed Atiku structure into APC knowing fully well that the Grand matron of ASG is the wife of Atiku Abubakar.

In his statement, he claimed that the PDP Gubernatorial Candidate Engr.Seyi Makinde is not in any way different from Senator Ajimobi or Chief Ladoja. None of the three are great team players.

Any of the above mentioned gladiators always abandon the party to them because of their domineering autocratic and overbearing attitude.

Adebayo Adelabu is obviously different as his colleagues at the Central bank and other banks he worked, have only good to say about his personality.

THE ADOPTION OF APC BY ALAO AKALA: THE LATEST REDEEMPTION

By minkail olaitan.

The gubernatorial seat as turned cribbage after presidential election in Oyo state. The election which was won by All progressive Congress (APC) candidate and also in oyo state which the party takes the head in both senitorial and house of representative. The triumphant that lightly open the chances of survival for the son of great Adelabu while tighten the chances of survival of others opposition party. Including: ADC, PDP, Zlp and ADP.

The situation that hereby opened a scintillating transfer window between all the parties in the state, for the measure of building undisputable wall and combo sooner than the coming election that was slated on March/9 of this year. The formative meeting of alliances that was mostly recorded and hold by opposition party and the attendance include: the once Governor of the state senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja from ibadan, SIR Christopher Adebayo Alao Akala of ogbomoso and the likes of honorary fellow. Excluding All progressive Congress (APC).

Albeit, the unfruitful heading unveiled the mindset and prevailing motive of all the attendance, as the PDP governorship flag bearer exhibit his unsavory hauteur, accompanied by penurious minded of senetor Adewolu Ladoja towards power, in order to remain the interest of his town. Followed by the shilly- shally of senetor Lanlehin, and the unquenchable Bunning mindset fixed will with rescue mission of Alao Akala. The misunderstanding of motives which undoubtedly Hunt down the alliance movement.

The unstable alliance however became the precursor of divine affinity between all progressive Congress and the flag bearer of ADP in Oyo state. OTUNBA CHRISTOPHER ADEBAYO ALAO AKALA remain one in town with his ledendary move that was tagged even with the presidency office. Due to his highest level of his influencial deed. He proved ogbomosho as legendary city with dynamism in his style of changing course.

The man, Alao Akala remain the headlines in all news paper and has been turned the talk of town, mainly to showcase their grievance. Most especially people of ogbomosho have named him different kind of name which includes: traitor, betrayal and many more while many stand saying he wanted to sell them. However the unexpected move was full of bundles of packages and mainly took to rescue the state.

Alongside with his undiluted submission with Chief Adebayo Adelabu his name sake, he make known to the presidencies what the rescue mission mindset really means to him and the progress of the state that remain the task which they accepted and even adopted the regulations as the ambition for the candidate.

Alao Akala companionship with all progressive Congress gave clenched fist and dirty slap on other opposition party due to the visible impingement which will be render by him to cleansing the flibbertigibbet view towards the sighting winning. And which remain the reverberation of arrogancy and condescendingness that beg for correction.

No, the EU did not call this election the most democratic in Nigerian history

Posts shared more than 3,000 times online quote the UN, European Union and ECOWAS as heaping praise on Nigeria’s presidential election. One post quotes the EU’s chief election observer as calling it the most democratic vote in Nigerian history, while another claims the United Nations and West African regional bloc ECOWAS have asked the party of defeated candidate Atiku Abubakar to accept the results, calling them free, fair and credible. These remarks have been fabricated and they are more positive in tone than what the observers actually said.

Among the posts is this one by Facebook user Idris Ahmed, shared 2,300 times:

In a separate post Ahmed quotes Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia’s former president and the head of the ECOWAS mission to Nigeria for the election, as saying that the election result “reaffirms the massive support of the Nigerian public to the fight against corruption”.

He further quoted Eva Palmans of the European Center for Electoral Support (ECES), a non-profit group, as calling the election "the most positive" in Nigeria’s history, and cites Maria Arena, the EU’s chief observer for the election, as calling it the “most democratic” Nigeria has ever held.

The EU, African Union, ECES and ECOWAS made various public statements about their monitoring of the February 23 election, which did not include these remarks. The real statements were more restrained in their tone.

ECOWAS published a statement Friday calling the words attributed to Johnson “fake news” and said she “did not at any time make such a statement”. It said readers should look instead at the bloc’s preliminary declaration, published on February 24, for the official ECOWAS position.

That document balances praise and criticism for handling of the election. ECOWAS said it “considers the electoral process was largely peaceful and transparent as voters were able to cast their votes freely”. But it also said there were “many shortcomings” including logistical problems that led to the vote being delayed by a week, and misinformation during the campaign. Published before President Muhammadu Buhari was declared re-elected, it called on all party leaders to “show tolerance and restraint leading up to, and after, the announcement of the results”.

ECES, like ECOWAS, called on Nigerians to ignore the posts on social media quoting its head of programmes Eva Palmans, describing the posts as “fake news”.

Like ECOWAS, EU observers did publish a statement about the conduct of the election but were similarly restrained in their comments.

The EU mission said Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC, had operated in a difficult environment and that “serious operational shortcomings” had led to delays, but that election officials had made a number of improvements since the last presidential vote in 2015.

“Going forward, there is a great need for more transparency and communication during the whole process, with political parties, civil society, the media and, most importantly, citizens,” Arena said.

INEC officially named Buhari as the winner on Wednesday, ushering him into a second term in the presidency. Atiku, his main challenger of the Peoples Democratic Party, rejected the result, calling it the worst in Nigeria’s history and vowing to mount a legal challenge.

Many of the false quotes have been posted and shared by people expressing support for Buhari’s ruling All Progressives Congress. Opposition PDP supporters have also been circulating some election results which AFP found to be fake.

The United States, Britain and France are among the countries that have congratulated Buhari on his re-election. The US said international and domestic observer missions had affirmed “the overall credibility of the election, despite localized violence and irregularities”.

The British government concluded that “the UK believes the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result”.

But it added in a statement: “We also recognise that independent Nigerian voices have expressed concerns about the conduct of the electoral process, in particular logistics and results collation, and reports of intimidation of election officials. We urge any party or individual who wishes to challenge the process to do so peacefully and through the appropriate legal channel and we encourage Nigerian authorities to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible.”

Akala's Decision to Form Alliance with APC: My Take - Com. Ayorinde Lekan-Actor

It is no longer a news that the former governor of Oyo state, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala has coalesced with the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Chief Adebayo Adelabu. In a press released, Otunba Alao-Akala resolved to form an alliance with APC is as a result of government to form a coalition government, should APC win in the oncoming general election and presidency stands as the witness to the agreement.

However, Chief Akala is a well known grassroot politician who always put the interest of his people as foremost priority. He is a very good leader that has built good reputation for himself and his hometown entirely, and to maintain the reputation he cannot achieve this in isolation and the only way to achieve that is to ally with a political party that has what it takes to win the election to save our interest in Ogbomoso. You can do little or nothing without the support of the federal government. So, OGBOMOSOS let’s know what we are doing oo.

On the issue of LAUTECH, the coalition government that is expected to be paddled under All progressive congress (APC) if given the mandate will in a long way be of help to the development of the institution, Chief Akala as part of the administrative had suggested a way forward on the issue of LAUTECH, I mean the lasting solution to the problems that have been causing setback to the institution for years. Since it will be ONE NIGERIA, all hands will be on the deck to make all things right.

I see him fighting on behalf of people of Ogbomoso and Oyo State, defending our political will. How can High Chief Ladoja resolve that Alao-Akala could not be the next governor because he is from Ogbomoso?

Should Akala accept to work for PDP, Ogbomoso may not be able to claim her stand in the subsequent election in the state. And we (Ogbomosos) are the determinant of who wins in most elections.

No other person can fight for us other than Otunba Alao-Akala. He has the people’s best interest at heart and also he has what it takes to bring back the glory to of LAUTECH.
