Oyo 2019: Alao-Akala promises to prioritize workers' welfare and infrastructural development as ADP flags off campaign

By Wadud Wadraj

The bustling city of Ibadan was agog yesterday as Action Democratic Party, ADP stalwarts, led by its governorship candidate and a former governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala; his running mate, Prof Abideen Olaiya; Honourable Olatoye Sugar; Dr. Fola Akinosun and Dr. Ahmed Salawudeen, stormed the city to flag off the party's campaign for the 2019 general elections.

Addressing the overwhelming supporters of the party who thronged Monatan market, venue of the campaign flag off, Otunba Alao-Akala avowed the commitment of his party to rescue the State from the grips of economic downturn, porous security, infrastructural decay and total collapse of the education sector.

He said the Action Democratic Party had meticulously designed its manifesto to revamp all the sectors of the State from systematic stagnancy and inoperable ridgity. He decried the rot in the education sector of the state which has translated to the decline in the performance of students in WAEC examinations as Oyo State emerged 26th in the latest ranking by the Exam body. According to him, his administration will resuscitate Oyo State Scholarship Board in order to assist indigent and gifted students of the State.

''I will ensure payment of thirty thousand minimum wage and approve all outstanding promotions to boost the dwindling morale of the labour force. All higher institutions across the State will receive necessary facelift and adequate funding to run their affairs without hiatus. Also, all arrangements for the takeover of Lautech by Oyo State will be finalized at the onset of my administration.

"Infrastructural development and urban renewal projects will also resume in full swing. It is on record that our administration developed Kolapo Ishola Estate to provide modern housing with crisp environment at the heart of the State's capital," he said.

Hon. Olatoye Sugar, while acknowledging the large turnout of people at the event admonished them to monitor the electoral process till the official announcement of results by the electoral commission in order to foil the plans of the ruling party to subvert the will of the electorate, he also noted that the present administration in the State has betrayed the main purpose of leadership and should be sacked through electoral means.

Professor Abideen Olaiya who affirmed his belief in the party's triumph in the forthcoming elections maintained that other political parties are jittery of the meteoric rise of Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo State. He stressed that Otunba Alao-Akala remains the most experienced of all candidates jostling for the governorship seat.

Other dignitaries at the event were Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Alao-Akala; Director General of Alao-Akala campaign Organization, Chief Wale Ohu and all candidates of Action Democratic Party in the State.

Why I Want to Serve Oyo Again - Alao Akala

The immediate past governor of Oyo state and gubernatorial candidate of African Democratic Party (ADP), Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala has reiterated that his decision to run for governorship position in the forthcoming 2019 general elections was not motivated by personal aggrandizement but the need to better lives of the teeming masses who are at the receiving end of the present inhumane administration in the state.

Otunba Alao-Akala, in his usual animated and unpretentious mood highlighted this while receiving his running mate, Professor Abideen Olaiya who paid a courtesy visit to his country home in Ogbomoso. He stated that the current administration in the state failed to conduct a proper scale of preference in running of its affairs thereby prioritizing frivolities at the expense of numerous neccessities. ''Why should a government be dualizing an already spacious road and leave backlog of salaries unpaid?''. He queried.

He also reinforced his commitment to take over the ownership of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso within his first 100 days in office. According to him, ''with all sense of humility, a proactive leader must not only be able to see but also envision, and I foresaw the crises currently bedevilling Lautech when I was in government which made me finalize all necessary documents for the take over of the institution, only for the present administration to discontinue the process in a step that has done vast disservice to the academic fortune of our students and welfare of workers in the school.'' He maintained that nonpayment of salaries of workers in higher institutions to the tune of 17 months portends a gloomy future for the state if not quickly rescued from those currently steering its affairs.

While acknowledging his choice of Professor Abideen Olaiya as running mate among other eminently qualified technocrats as the will of God, the former governor expressed confidence that if elected, his administration will hit the ground running owing to his longstanding experience that places him miles ahead of other contestants and the thorough academic background and Grassroots credentials of his running mate who he described as a devout Muslim with fear of God and unconditional love for the masses.

Abideen Olaiya, a Professor of Crop and Ecophysiology pledged his unadulterated support to the Action Democratic Party and affirmed the commitment of ADP to bring back excellent governance to the state with the aim of running an inclusive government that will benefit the entire populace and not just the tiny percentage of the ruling class.

PoliticsADP: A Rising Star In Oyo Political Firmament by adeoluphilips(op): 11:07am On Oct 12, 2018
ADP: A Rising Star in Oyo Political Firmament

In a saturated atmosphere that is replete with many celestial bodies in form of political parties, a new star has beckoned, rising in full bloom from the Northern Pole. Moving in sync with the earth's rotation. As constant as a polaris can ever be. It is riveting to the sight. It is a guiding light for good governance. A pointer to robust welfarism. A mark of institutional growth. A beacon of infrastructal development. It is the Action Democratic Party (ADP).

Brought to eminence by a consummate leader of unassailable repute, an outstanding manager of men and resources, a former governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala, the ADP has set forth as a platform to exert needed accomplishments to the yearnings and aspirations of the populace with a view to returning the Pace Setter state to the enviable path of economic growth and stability.

At a time in which our dear state is marred with crippling economy, inoperable institutional rigidity, inadequate disbursement of funds for prompt payment of salaries and arrears, protracted industrial actions by higher institutions of learning, paucity of infrastructural development among other ills, it is pertinent that we join hands to salvage the state from the path of devastating voyage it has been launched into by the present administration. It is this commitment of rebuilding a working system of government that the ADP has come to champion.

Though in its formative days, the party has already gained momentum by the mass exodus of technocrats from various interest groups to its fold, and gradually becoming the toast of all and sundry. By dint of its general acceptance, one needs no soothsayer to affirm that the party has the necessary credentials to come out in flying colours in the forthcoming general elections in the state.

As we roll out our manifestoes in full swing, we promise all inhabitants of Oyo State that the ADP is here to sow the seed of democratic principles which will bear fruits of job creation, youth empowerment, improved health care, accessible road networks, qualitative education and all goodies of excellent governance, come 2019.

ADP!

PoliticsRerun:my Interest Is In Good Governance Of Osun State, Omisore Says by adeoluphilips(op): 1:07pm On Sep 26, 2018
Rerun: My interest is in good governance of Osun State, Omisore says
After over 72 hours of pressure on him by both the leadership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has said that what is paramount to him is the practice of true democracy in Osun State. Omisore firmly states that he will never renege on his promise of good governance, accountability and human dignity in Osun state.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Omisore said "Osun state has always been a stellar example of democracy where the people have consistently and freely expressed their franchise to determine who governs them. This should remain so. Osun people have shown that it is not business as usual. It is a positive deviation from what was hitherto the norm.
I am telling my people that they should go with any political party that believes in what we in the SDP stand for; good governance, social justice and accountability. I have already detailed how we planned to restore Osun to the path of good governance through the five thematic pillars in the manifesto I shared during the electioneering. I will not negotiate for personal gains and abandon my people.
"My alliance is with the people of Osun state irrespective of the political party they belong. I want my people to be treated with the dignity they deserve. I desire that they have a government that will be accountable to them. I want them to experience the good governance the founding fathers of this state envisaged. I have told the parties that have solicited for my support to approach the electorates and ask for their mandate as I have assured them that I will not coerce them for political or social power. It is because I have kept my promise that has made me enjoyed their unalloyed support all these years.
As highlighted in SDP manifestos, the five thematic pillars the SDP had hoped to implement to improve governance, eliminate financial reckless and reposition the economy of Osun state include: Economic management and accountability; Professionalism and performance; Equity in access to service; Local content and innovation and Security. To this end, he has said to all Nigerians that this is the centre point of his campaign and "democracy we both fought for and believe in. It is the right and democratic freedom of people to choose by their own free will. Their votes should not be coerced by money, vote buying, intimidation in form of militarisation, political and social power.
"Their voices of demand for good governance, accountability and human dignity should continue to be heard as well as salaries paid. All these are what I stand for and which the SDP had promised the people all through our electioneering campaigns. They are still paramount to me as we collectively chart the way forward for the governorship elections rerun in Osun state."
Senator Omisore assured his followers and admirers that he will not abandon his campaign promises even as he engaged all stakeholders on the way forward to ensure the progress of Osun state is achieved.

TravelRe: How To Spend 4 Days & 3 Nights On The Obudu Mountains by adeoluphilips: 2:07pm On Aug 31, 2018
mantosa:
When you go to Obudu, you’ll understand that the hills are really alive.

Despite the fact that it is called Obudu Plateau, it is actually located in the Obanliku local Government area which is about 60km from Obudu town. It is on these mountains that the famous cattle ranch was built.

To get to Obudu, there are two options as flights are not currently going there directly. You can either fly to Calabar and take a drive down for about 8-9 hours or you can fly into Enugu to cut the road trip down to 4 hours.

Once you get past the numerous checkpoints and bad roads along the way, you finally get to the plateaus and you are welcomed by the figure of a cow head perched on a ‘gate’. This is the beginning of many picture worthy moments as you are wowed by the mountains and the clouds that are within your reach.

Day 1

After arriving at the ranch and settling in your accommodation, have some lunch and begin your first activity of the day.

This is a tour of the Becheve nature reserve. This reserve is home to various plants/vegetation and also has a canopy walk.

At the end of the canopy walk, you climb a tower and you get to view the numerous plants available on the mountain and some mountain peaks are also highlighted.

The thrill really is the canopy walk and if you have mischievous people like I am, you’ll have some jumping and scaring the living daylight out of you.

After you get off the canopy walk, specifically asked to be taken to the Fern tree grove within the reserve. Some don’t get to visit but trust me it’s worth it. It’s almost like walking into an enchanted forest and has the most amazing white lilies. Not only are these lilies pretty to look at, they also smell divine. I likened the smell to talcum aka baby powder. There’s also a little river running through the middle and if you didn’t know any better you would think you were in a place right out of a fairy tale.

After walking round the enchanted forest, take a walk round the grounds of the resort built on the Obudu Mountains but before that, don’t forget to take a picture infront of the Becheve signage as a way to show you were really there.
As you walk round, you will notice the facilities that belong to the resort – basketball courts, restaurant, steak house and more importantly, the locals.

You can end the night playing board games with your group if you packed some or just watch TV till you’re tired and you call it a night.

Day 2

If you’re a morning person, 6 am is the time to set out. This is to go bird watching. Obudu is home to various species from the yellow bird to the red long claw bird. During the sightseeing, you see the various accommodation options such as the mountain villas, African huts, the conference room and also the presidential villa which is perched at the top of a hill in all its glory.

The most exciting part about this is while looking for birds, you literally go through the jungle. Like someone in our group said, it was like walking into Jurassic park. It was just us, bushes, the sound of streams and the birds. A couple of people will fall on their ass because the soil might be wet but it made for a couple of laughs.

When you get out of the jungle, you realize you went in the middle of one mountain and came out of the other side. It’s astonishing because if anyone points out to you that you would walking in the middle of mountains, you would chime in that it’s impossible, but alas it can be done.

After coming out alive on the other side, take some pictures at the top of the mountain you’ve just conquered and head on home because remember, you haven’t had breakfast. However keep an eye out for the most amazing valley views. It was breathtaking. We all had to stop and marvel at its beauty. Just in case you’re wondering, it’s on the left side of the presidential lodge so now you can’t miss it. Thank me later.

While birdwatching seems like child’s play, it takes about 2 hours and if you’re a budding photography this could easily be 3 hours. So be ready to be on your feet for that long.

After birdwatching, head back and have breakfast, shower, gist, rest and then it’s time to head to the grotto falls.

Grotto falls is one of the many waterfalls in the mountains and probably the most famous. It has a resting point, a little pool and people often grill food there if they’re having a party. If you’re lucky, before you enter you’ll see a horse and a ride can be organized. You can have a picnic there but if you’re just there to see it, after about 20 minutes you’ll probably be itching to go. I don’t blame you, many more things await you.

One thing a lot of people don’t mention is that there are villages in the mountains and 7 of them are easily accessible. This means after grotto falls, you can do a tour of the village.

From Opaganza (banana village) to little Cape Town, you meet a variety of indigenes who are separated by streams or stones. These people are friendly. A few of them are skeptical about why you’re taking their pictures but in general they’re very welcoming. You’ll hardly pass a villager without hearing good day or ‘yangukle’.

During your walk through, make sure you buy something from them. It could be palm wine, bananas, ube (purple pear), corn, etc but by doing this, you’re contributing to their economy and empowering them.

After this, it’s time to head back home and enjoy evening. Besides you need to sleep early as the next day is about to be hectic but lit!

Day 3

Day 3 is the most exciting day. You will be walking in the clouds on a mission to see the border between Cameroon and Nigeria. Make sure you wear a swimsuit underneath your hiking clothes and pack a small towel in your back pack. You’ll see why later. Also, pack some water, carry your speakers and set off with your friends. This hike is intense but my oh my it’s so worth it. The excitement when you hear you’re 1603m above sea level is honestly next to none.

After crossing this personal best, you start to notice Fulani settlements. I couldn’t believe it, settlements at the top of the mountain? We were amazed.

However what was more amazing was that we entered the first settlement and the Fulani women welcomed us like they had been expecting us. We sat on their stools, they brought out nunu (yoghurt) and some meat. It was the most thoughtful thing ever and continues to add to the notion that don’t judge a tribe by everything you hear on the news.

Even if you don’t do anything while you’re in Obudu make sure you do that. After visiting the Fulanis and you step out, you start to see the Cameroonian Mountains and if the clouds aren’t there you’ll see all of them clearly. This will be your reward for being patient.

When all this is done, you can start your descent. For an extra treat, you take a different route which leads you to beautiful waterfall that not a lot of people know of. This means you have the whole place to yourself. The waterfall forms a natural pool at the bottom and if you’re a good swimmer, you should jump into into it. Trust me it’s safe as 4 of us did it and I’m here to share the story.

If you can’t swim, stay at the top which is nicknamed the kiddies section. The water is cold but it offers such a relief from the hike you just finished. I know I said seeing the Cameroun border is your reward but I lied. This is your real reward. You’ll be shocked that you jumped into a natural pool in Nigeria. I mean you only see these things on TV.

When you think you’re done, dry off and continue back home as you still have the Holy Mountain to go to.

The Holy Mountain is named so because apparently when the missionaries first went to Obudu this was where they camped. It’s also believed that if you pray there, your prayers will get answered. We all had one thing or the other that we need sorted out so why not just give it a try.

From the top of Holy Mountain, you see the waterfall you just jumped into and if you’re in no hurry, just sit there for a few minutes and soak in the beauty and magic that mountains and clouds create when they are put together; God is really the master artist.

It then starts to dawn on you that your time at Obudu is coming to an end. With a bit of sadness, you start to head back to your cabin but on the bright side, you’ll have a bonfire and barbeque which is the tradition.

The bonfire is filled with barbecued food from corn to plantain, ram to chicken. Drinks are flowing, music is blaring, spirits are high and it’s a way to end your Obudu trip with a bang.

The next day at 6am you depart to catch that 1.50 flight back to Lagos from Enugu airport.
You leave with memories and pictures that will last a lifetime and you’ll also be able to boast of visiting Nigeria’s famous mountain ranges.

Now this isn’t just a story I’m telling, its based on my personal experience and because I love you guys, I decided to help you get the most out of your Obudu trip.

For accommodation, I stayed in a private cabin owned by the Obudu Conservation Centre. They are independent of the resort and their job is to protect the wildlife and plants on those mountains. I highly recommend their cabins as they give a vantage view and they are literally in the clouds. They all come with kitchens for each cabins, heaters in each room and a generator.

Holler at them or me and we can hook you up.
So my question is, when are you off to Obudu?

At early hours of today August 1, 2018, the indigenes and inhabitants of the second largest city in oyo state, Ogbomoso took to the street to express their grievances to the government on the abandoned section of the new expressroad between Ibadan and Ilorin. The Oyo to Ogbomoso session of the road has been abandoned despite the fact that government vote so much money for this project...even the Sukkuk bond from the federal government. The construction of the road was flagged off by Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 2001 and since then the Ibadan to Oyo and Ogbomoso to Ilorin section have been completed and left with only Oyo to Ogbomoso. The current road being used...tagged Old road is nothing but a death trap to many travellers and the road has claimed several lives from all walks of life, and this has been on a daily basis. The people of ogbomoso now called upon the federal government to do the needful.
